Chapter Two: How to help Yugi

Yugi sat in his chair, a blank expression on his face. All that was moving was his mouth, twitching uncontrollably as he stared into space, completely zoned out from the rest of reality.

Sat around him were his friends Joey, Tristan and Tea, looking at him with concern. Yugi had not said a word for at least an hour or so, and had hardly even acknowledged they were there. He didn't speak at all when they came to go to school with him, nor did he speak on the bus. Even in class Yugi said nothing, and simply stared into space. Everyone could tell something was up, and kept their distance.

"Yugi…" Joey said cautiously. "Are you all right?"

"Yeah, man," said Tristan. "You haven't said a word all day. What's up?"

Yugi said nothing, and didn't even acknowledge them. Joey waved his hand in front of Yugi's face, but the boy didn't even blink. Whatever was going on in his head, it was stopping him from completely noticing that they were there. Joey then poked Yugi in the arm. Again, Yugi didn't respond. He and Tristan looked at each other, and shrugged.

Tea watched Yugi's reactions curiously, and remembered him acting similar to this once before. It had happened when a bully had stolen Yugi's favourite teddy, which he had fondly named Yami Cuddles (for no particular reason!). It had been Yugi's only comfort throughout the years he had been bullied, and it had broken his heart when it had been taken from him. He had acted pretty much the same then as he was now.

She looked over at Joey and Tristan, who were now both rocking Yugi gently back and forth between them like a see-saw, trying to make him snap out of it. Yugi's eyes remained blank and emotionless. He didn't notice a thing.

Poor Yugi… Tea thought to herself. I hope it hasn't happened again…

That evening after school, Tea stood outside of the Game Shop where Yugi lived. The shop was closed now, but she could see the lights in the apartment upstairs. She could just about see Yugi's room, but the skylight window was dark. Either Yugi wasn't in his room, or he was sitting in the dark.

Tea walked up to the door and knocked on it. She didn't entirely know what to say to Yugi, but she knew that something was wrong. After a few moments the door opened and Grandpa stood in the doorway. He stared for a few seconds, before smiling.

"Oh, hello, Tea."

Tea bowed slightly. "Hello, Mr. Motou. Is Yugi home?"

"Yes, he's home," Grandpa said. He frowned a little. "But… He's not himself at the moment."

"Yes, I know," Tea said. "He hardly said a word at school, if anything. I thought something had happened, and wanted to see if I could help at all."

Grandpa smiled again. "Perhaps you can. After all, you've been friends for years. I'm sure he'd tell you what's wrong. He won't even talk to me."

He motioned to Tea to come inside, and Tea followed him up towards Yugi's bedroom. The door was slightly ajar, but it was dark inside. Grandpa pushed the door open slightly, and he and Tea peeked into the room.

Yugi was sat quietly on his bed, his knees pulled up to his chest. He was also rocking gently back and forth, staring into space. He looked so forlorn and alone, sat on his bed. It made Tea and Grandpa feel quite depressed just to look at him. Grandpa nodded to Tea, who walked into the bedroom and shut the door behind her.
