Chapter 1: Mask of Irony
The Skull Cowboy was standing in the graveyard as rain pelted the tombstone of Yugi Muto. A crow flew into the cemetary. The bird landed on Yugi's grave and cawed. Skull Cowboy nodded as the bird spreads it's gallant wings, the crow gave out a loud caw that echoed through the sky. Lighting strikes the ground as Skull Cowboy heard muffled screaming beneath the grave. Yugi emerged from the depths of the earth and let out a battle cry yell. He rested himself next to the hole he dug himself out of as he stared at the western-dressed skeleton.
"Welcome back, Yugi," said Skull Cowboy.
"Who are you?" asked Yugi.
"Let me introduce myself, I am the Skull Cowboy," the skeleton addressed.
"What happened to me?" asked Yugi.
"You died two years ago. You and your grandfather were murdered," Skull Cowboy replied.
"No. NO!" Yugi yelled.
Yugi ran from the cemetary to the darkness of the city until he tripped and lost his buriel shoes. Yugi wandered the streets then saw some black studded boots near a dumpster and took them. Yugi puts on the boots and continued to walk the streets to see his grandfather's cardshop. He ran to the old card shop to see the display glasse cases shattered and monster cards were scattered everywhere on the floor. Yugi weeped as he said "Grandpa.", he started to have flashbacks of the fun times he had with his grandfather. Yugi remembered Grandfather was teaching him how to play duel monsters and telling him about the heart of the cards. After the flashback, he sat down and sobbed as the crow flew into the card shop. The crow flew onto one of the broken glass cases, Yugi crawled over and saw a box under the glass case, he opened it to see his grandfather's Blue Eyes White Dragon card inside. As another flashback occured, Solomon called Yugi over to come see it.
"Yugi, come here and take a look at this!" Solomon Muto called out, pulling out a box.
"What is it, Grandpa?" asked Yugi.
"It's one of the most rarest cards in the world," replied Solomon.
"Is that what I think it is?" asked Yugi.
"Yup, it's the Blue Eyes White Dragon card," replied Solomon.
"Wow! I bet this card might be worth a fortune one day Grandpa," said Yugi.
"Oh, it will Yugi. It will," said Solomon then the flashback ended.
Yugi dropped the card as he got up, he touched the cash register as another flashback came, this time a bad one. Yugi and Grandpa Muto saw Seto Kaiba carrying a briefcase come in.
"Yes, can I help you?" asked Solomon.
"I heard you have a rare card here," replied Kaiba.
"Yes, do you want to see it?" asked Solomon.
"Oh yes," Kaiba replied.
Solomon grabbed the box below the display case, he placed it in front of Kaiba and opened it. Seto gazed at the Blue Eyes White Dragon card.
"Whoa! How much for it?" asked Kaiba breathlessly.
"I'm afraid the card isn't for sale, young man," replied Solomon.
"What!? I gotta have it! I'll trade you all the cards I have in this briefcase!" Kaiba yelled, revealing his entire card collection.
"That's a nice collection but I'm sorry, this card is not for sale," said Solomon.
"I'll get that card one way or the other!" snapped Kaiba, storming out of the store.
"Grandpa, what happened?" asked Yugi.
"Someone wanted to buy the Blue Eyes White Dragon card but I just couldn't," replied Solomon.
"Why?" asked Yugi.
"This card just means so much too me," Solomon replied.
"Even if it's a common card you still wouldn't sell it, right Grandpa?" asked Yugi.
"Right, Yugi," replied Solomon.
Two days later, Kaiba and a group of thugs came into the store, they attacked Grandpa Motou and started to wreck everything within the cardshop as blood seeped down the old man's face. Yugi heard some noises coming from downstair, so he headed to the shop area to investigate.
"Stop this at once!" yelled Solomon in a deathly hoarse voice.
"Not until you give me the fucking card," said Kaiba.
"Never," cried out Solomon, recieving a jab in the jaw.
"Grandpa, what's happening?" asked Yugi appearing to the shop.
"Yugi! Get out of here now!" ordered Solomon.
"You have a grandson, eh? Do you value his life? Hand over the card and he'll live," said Kaiba, pulling out a gun.
"I won't tell! Yugi, run now!" yelled Solomon.
Before Yugi ran, Kaiba shot him a few times. Yugi collaspsed to the floor as Grandpa Moto felt tears coming down his cheeks. Kaiba shot Solomon once in the head, killing him instantly.
"What are we gonna do boss?" asked one of Kaiba's henchmen.
"There's nothing for me here now. Let's go," replied Kaiba.
Kaiba and his henchmen left the store as the flashback ended, Yugi cried as he smashed everything in the store. Skull Cowboy arrived a short time later, he grabbed Yugi as he got him to calm down.
"Calm down! There is a reason why you came back here Yugi," said Skull Cowboy.
"Find the people who did this to us and make them pay," said Yugi.
"Yes! That's the spirit!" yelled Skull Cowboy.
Before Yugi left, Skull Cowboy told him the crow was his link between our world and the otherside. If anything were to happen to the crow, the link will be broken and Yugi will be a mere human. Yugi nodded then left with the bird flying behind him. Yugi walked in the wet streets as the crow cawed, he saw a house just a few feet away from him. He walked to the house and knocked on the door, Mai was sleeping on the couch when she heard a knock. She didn't expect Joey, Tristen, and Serenity be home early from the battle of the bands concert, she walked up to the door and opened it. She saw Yugi in his wet burial suit with a puzzled look on her face.
"Who are you?" asked Mai.
"Mai, it's me Yugi," he replied.
"No way! Yugi died a long time ago, you fucked up freak!" yelled Mai.
"Please, Mai. Allow me to show you the truth," said Yugi, placing his hands on the woman's face. Mai saw mental images of Yugi's murder in her mind's eye.
"I'm sorry," said Mai wiping a tear from her eye.
"Can I come in?" asked Yugi.
"Sure, let's get you out of these wet clothes," replied Mai.
Yugi walked into the door, he and Mai went upstairs into the bedroom for a quick costume change. Mai helped him to remove his burial clothing to see the scars on his chest and stomach then she became startled by a crow flying into the window.
"What's with the bird?" asked Mai.
"My link between this world and the realm of the dead," replied Yugi.
Mai looked at the bird for a moment then walked to the dresser and closet for some fresh clothes for Yugi. Mai grabbed a skin tight sleeveless black shirt, and a pair of leather pants from the dresser and Tristen's black trenchcoat that he never worn out of the closet. Yugi puts on his gothic attire as the crow cawed.
"Something is missing," said Mai.
"What?" asked Yugi.
"This," replied Mai grabbing her make-up set.
"What's with the make-up?" Yugi asked.
"It's for you, Yugi," Mai replied. "You can't declare vengeance on your killers without the proper face."
Mai took her white foundation and rubs it all over Yugi's face except his eyes and lips. She took a black eyeliner pencil and some eye shadow to Yugi's eyes. Mai used the black eyeliner to trace some black lines above and below Yugi's eyes. Mai put the finishing touches on Yugi's face with black lipstick, she paints Yugi's lips black and drew some black lines on both sides of his mouth to make an evil smile. As Yugi looked in the mirror, he knew he wasn't himself anymore, he was now a fallen angel of vegeance. Yugi opened the window to leave but before he did, he embraced Mai in a loving hug.
"Goodbye Mai and thank you," said Yugi, kissing Mai's cheek and left.
Mai touched the spot where Yugi kissed her and cried in silence, she ran to the window to see Yugi one last time but he was gone. Yugi walked in the shadows with the crow on his right shoulder, his eyes flashed blood red and a bird-shaped emblem gleamed on his forehead while the rain slapped the road.
