Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction / Fan Fiction ❯ Spirit Detective ❯ I Dream of Ivory ( Chapter 3 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
When Shen's fingers hit every key on the baby grand piano perfectly, she knew she was dreaming. She couldn't play the piano. But she did not awaken. And she was glad. The sorrowful yet pretty music rang through her ears as she felt as if she was being controlled by invisible strings. Like a marionette.
When the song drew to a close and she took her bow, she heard no applause but had a feeling her audience was watching silently, in awe. There was no stage, and there were no curtains to close when the show was over. Only bright lights. Shen exited blindly where she thought was stage left, but apparently fell off stage. She never hit the floor. She blinked once, and then opened her eyes wide as they adjusted to the night.
All she felt was cold earth on her neck, and the back of her hands and legs. Once she could see, she sat upright and checked her surroundings. She was outside somewhere, but wasn't sure where. Then she saw a light. It seemed distant, but she knew she could reach it before it faded away. Was she still dreaming?
"Hello?" she called, hoping for a quick reply. She could tell she was wide awake. And just to make sure, she gave herself a pinch on the back of the hand. Like in all the fairy tales she'd ever read where the princess, or the damsel in distress, or whoever was stranded somewhere far away and didn't know where, she did not awaken. This new world was very real.
But she wouldn't panic and get scared like all the others. She was probably sleepwalking and only wandered a bit away from home. She did live in the mountains, after all. The place where she was stranded seemed awfully familiar.
Though she could barely see where she was going, she followed the light ahead of her, her bare feet slapping against the wet grass. Once she thought she was getting closer, the ground seemed to give beneath her, but she realized she had walked right off a small cliff! She scraped against the natural stone wall and dug her fingers into the earth before she could slide off completely. Hanging on with her right hand, she flung up her left and as well.
Desperately trying to climb the wall of the cliff, she scraped the bottoms of her feet until the skin was raw and blistering. A chunk of the wall gave away and she smacked up against what was left, banging her knee and just barely managing to hold on. Screaming was her only option. "Help!" she cried out, trying to hang on long enough for someone to come and rescue her. "Help me, please!"
Her fingers began to slip. The earth she was clinging to was slightly wet and muddy. Finally she lost her grip. "No!" she cried. But she didn't fall far. To her surprise, there was a small stone platform just below that jutted out from the wall, stopping her fall. Feeling extremely lucky, she scooted up against the wall and prepared for a long night. She had no where to go without anyone to help her.
