Chapter Six

Several times she had glanced toward the young girl's face and several times she would see those glaring duel colored eyes boring holes into her.
Despite her many reasuraces, as well as Kun-Lun's, of her experience in the medical field the young Higurashi still watched her with narrowed eyes.

Finishing off the last stitch she leaned back to check her work, also noticing the girl checked it as well.

"Thank you so very much Shiori-kun, I am indebt..." Kun-Lun was cut off by the firm voice of her daughter. Both older women looked to the younger girl.

"Thank you." Shiori was startled by the sharp edge to the voice, but smiled despite it.

"Mother, may I speak with Minamino-san for a moment? Alone." She added the last bit when it hadn't looked like her mother was going to leave.

Kun-Lun was hesitant, but complied otherwise. The older woman mumbled something about checking on Souta and Inu-Yasha as she left.
Turning her hardened blue gaze on to Shiori, Kagome motioned for the older woman to have a seat in the desk chair.

Despite her injuries and weakened state, shiori had to admit the girl seemed to have an air about her giving others the feeling she was the one in control, the one whom held power.
As unnerving as it was Shiori refrained from showing weakness, she had the feeling the girl would zero in on such things.
At first neither of the two spoke, but soon it became to much for Shiori and she broke the silence.

"Are you sure you don't want any painkillers? Anethstetic?" The older woman asked as she eyed the gruesome wounds.
Shiori for her part had been astonished when the girl refused any pain relievers or numbing agents, her amazement grew when the girl never flinched through out the entire procedure. When she had first seen the wounds and the horrible attention (or lack of) that had been given to the many lesions, she had been appalled. She had remembered once seeing wounds that had similar quality in care, but they had been on a man whom had been no stranger to death. Though even he had asked for anethstetic and pain killers, they had actually needed to make sure he did not take more then his stystem could handle.

"Yes." The somber tone the young girl's voice held told Shiori not to ask that question again.

"You seem like an understanding and kind person Minamino-san, So may I ask you a question?" Nodding hesitantly, Shiori agreed.

"Kasaan told me you have a son, is this true?"

"Yes, he turned twenty near the begining of winter, why? What does my son have to do with this?"

Shaking her head Kagome answered in a slightly softer tone, "Nothing, I just wanted to know....Minamino-san?"

"Yes?"

"Do you believe in demons?" The question had thrown her off, but she answered honestly.

"I suppose, I mean they live in all of us. Why do..." Kagome held up her hand signaling for her to stop, which she did.

"No, not metophorical, I am speaking about creatures that have animalistic or other trates, beings that walk and live. I talking about youkai...ones that are ancestors are rumored to have had to battle every day to live. So I will ask again Minamino-san, Do you believe in demons?"

Shiori had no idea what to say, having never been asked such a question before or thought of such things, she was ignorant as to what to tell Kagome.

"I guess, I can't say I do. I haven't really been asked such a thing...I guess if I saw one it would be hard to deny." She had answered as truthfully, and that had not gone unnoticed by the guardian.
Shiori was curious as to why Kagome would aske such a thing, unknowingly voicing her question.

"Because Minamino-san...I wanted to know why an aura of such a being was heavly cloaking you, stating its claim upon you." Shiori's eyes widened slightly not having expected that.

"From what I can sense it is a very powerful one, and you have the right to know it is upon you. Demons do this occasionally to protect someone they hold dear or their intended prey, this tells others whom can sense it not to touch this person in a manner that would challenge their claim." Glancing from the corner of her eye, Kagome saw the woman's disbelieving look.

"How do I know you aren't just insane, or playing a trick on me?" Shiori asked with skeptisism clearly in her voice, causing Kagome to smile.

Kagome glanced down to her hand her thoughts turning inward for a moment. She could feel it, her power, she could feel the painful knawing of the purification as it slowly ebbed away. Her 'donated' organs were already fast healing. Her once immesurable power was fading, Enma had told her it was to happen, and when it did she would be able to kill Koenma and his friends. The shikon within her was becoming addicted the energy she gave, soon it would fully become apart of her.
She had never thought god would need a bounty hunter, but she soon found out he did and he had elected her for the job.

"I do not lie Minamino-san...If what you want is proof all you need is say it..."

"I want proof, I need proof." Shiori was near hysterical after having thought over the possibility that she spoke the truth, what if she was some demons intended meal? What if they went after Schuiichi next?

Kagome held up her hand again, this time not in a stopping motion.
Shiori's eyes strayed to the girls's hand, the older woman gasped at the sight. Kagome's once dull human nails grew to steely razor claws in a matter of seconds and her pupils turned to slits.

Shiori felt faint, why was this happening to her?

"W-what are you?" Her voice was shaky and betrayed her immense fear.

"I am what I am, and not even I know anymore...what I do know is that I am no longer human, but neither am I demon...I have met Enma and I have died more times then I can count. Innocence I once had was stolen from me, my dignity torn to shreds. I am the ruler of hell's bounty hunter, I am a monster." Kagome said her eyes boring into Shiori's own.

"Why are you tellling me all of this?" The former nurse truly wished to know why Kagome was telling her these things.

"Because now you are my liability, if I fail in my job there is a chance that you could be killed and you also have the right to know. Because you helped me I will do everythin in my power to protect your life, you are to stay within my protection." Shiori felt herself nodding before she could register the act.

"I want you to stay with my family at all times, Enma will make you commit scuicide or use someone to kill you, if you are with Souta he may be able to stop it, he has holy power and can't be controlled all too easily by Enma, I think." By the time Kagome had finished Shiori looked ready to pace out.

"What about my son?"

"Leave him out of this, it is bad enough that your being dragged into this."

"Now I have to ask you something..."

Shiori turned her gaze to the former miko.

"Do you believe in demons?"

Staring at the picture on the tv, he was surpized to see the girls face.

"So Kurama do you know what the hell is going on?" Genkai's asked tearing him from his thoughts.

"The normal things, but that girl, I saw her..." His brow furrowed as he thought.

"She a fangirl or something, she is damn pretty..." Yusuke stated in a low whistle.

"No, she is who my father is sending after us..." All attention turned to Koenma, whom was staring at the tv like it was from hell itself.

"That is what you got..."

"She is a miko with much power and the shikon no Tama's guardian, from recent resourses apparently she was taken by my father and unwillingly experimented on...She doesn't want to do this..."

Everyone was silent waiting for more information.
"So why doesn't she just say no and side with us?" Came the blunt question curtisy of Yusuke.

"All her relations are to be used as hostages by my father....I wouldn't be surprised if she has already tried to kill herself to get out of it. She is now my father's bounty hunter and he will likely keep her. I can only imagine what being cut open being treated as a living game of 'operation' does to one's sanity..." Koenma had his eyes on the note in his hand.

"Thats sick...I thought your father had atleast some morals!" Kuwabara shouted in pure disgust.

"Every one needs to get in contact with the people that are their top priority, my father will make her kill even if he has to control her mind to do it. round them up and get them here."

Kurama stared at the phone in suprise, his mother was ussually home by now. He quickly dialed her cell phone, feeling relief when he heard her voice.

"*Hello?*"

"Mother?"

"*Oh! Schuiichi!*" Kurama stiffened when he heard the slight fear in her voice as she said his name.

"Mother, is something wrong?"

"*Nothing that you need to worry over. Though I need to tell you, I can't speak with you after this...I-I there is just too much danger that you would be in.*"

"Mother! where are you?" He felt slight fear at her tone and words.

"*Schuiichi, I can't tell you. Though I have a question I need to ask before I hang up and get rid of my cell phone...*"

"What?"

"*Do you believe in demons?*" Kurama felt his blood freeze and he nearly lost grip on the phone, only the sound of the dial tone reaching his ears caused him to panic.

"Mother? Mother?!" He didn't recieve a response.

Yusuke looked to the stunned Kitsune who held the phone in a white knuckled grip.

"Kurama are you okay?"

"I-I don't know...I think my mother knows..."

Yusuke was perplexed now.

"Knows what?"

"About demons, about youko, about me...she just asked me if I believed in demons and then she hung up...she told me she couldn't come in contact with me anymore..."

"Why?! because your demon?!" Yusuke felt his blood boil, but realized Kurama was shaking his head.

"No, she said it was too dangerous for me to be around her!"

Yusuke was slightly taken stunned, well that was a first.

"So do you?"

"Do i what?"

"Do you believe in demons?"

"Yusuke, stop being funny..." Kurama scolded the laughing toushin.
