Chapter One: Love and War
~~
In times of peace, anything can happen. Right? If given the chance, the light of purity will grow… But with light, and in all things, the darkness will equal the light, smoldering beneath life that the light, the purity, gives. And like all things, the darkness grows…

“That’s scary nee-chan.”

Kagome smiled and looked over her shoulder at her brother, who’d grown into a handsome young man. Like his idol, his hair was to his waist, kept in a tight ponytail at the base of his neck.

The college student turned around in her computer chair, setting her elbows on the arms and folded her fingers gracefully under her chin.

“Its mean to be scary, Souta-kun, its true.”

The handsome high school student folded his arms over his black muscle T. Souta had chosen to become not only the Shine Priest, but he also taught martial art to attract people to the shrine. As the Shrine Priestess, Kagome also taught martial arts and raised young girls who showed promise of a priestess spirit. Today, however, both Kagome and Souta were obligated to relax and take the day off to study or simply be lazy. Kagome was using her day to finish a novel she’d started the moment she returned from the Past, with a completed Shikon no Tama. Souta; was going to train and offered his sister along.

“Where do you plan on going?”

“Their’s a park across town. Where you can use your miko power without consequences and where I can use my Chakram without interference.”

“Ah, the Chakram, are you useful with it now?”

“Useful? Is that a challenge?”

“I don’t know, can it stand up to my Tessen’s?”

“Your Iron Fan’s? Doubtful…”

Kagome snickered and turned back to her computer, saving her work.
“Fine, I won’t use them. I’ll use my Kusarigama.”

“Nani!? No fair! You’re better with those than the Tessen!”

“Hey, I can’t help my Greatness.”

“Ch, greatness my ass.”

“Yes well, you’re just jealous that you don’t have a verity of weapons at your disposal.”

“Ha! You’ve had more time!”

“Iie, I’ve had more experience, with little time and lots of weapons to pick from.”

“Whatever.”

“You’re just pissed cuz you missed out.”

“Damn right! If I weren’t a kid when that happened, I’d of been right there with you, kicking evil ass!”

Kagome chuckled and turned off her computer, then turned in her chair and looked back at her brother.

“Ready?”

“Boo-yah!”

Kagome laughed fondly and stood up.

“Ha!”

The ring of the weapon made her eyes open wide. She tipped to the side and twisted, the air whirling around her and creating a shield, by using her energy to manipulate the air. The Chakram bounced off her with a spark of clashing holy energy. Kagome slowed down enough to charge forward, using the air swirling around her still to guard her rear and boost her momentum. Souta cursed and caught the Chakram by a cloth wrapped edge, just large enough for his hand. A fifteen percent chance wagered against Souta’s flesh, but practice and armor proved to be the benefactor as he twirled with the momentum of the blade before completing the turn and releasing it again.

Kagome smirked and watched as the blade spun towards her, the blade as thin as paper, as durable as zinc. When the blade was detailed to her eyes, she noticed a few nicks as time slowed, her body already reacting with age old instinct. She tumbled under the blade as it passed, rising and continuing her charge without missing a beat.
Souta snarled and pulled out two metal Tonfa’s, the siblings locked in a gruesome, furious battle of calculated swings and powerful snaps of tendon and muscle. The ring of the returning Chakram made the hair on the back of Kagome’s neck freeze, instinct and years in bloodshed, Kagome knew the blade was ten seconds from its return point.

By Souta’s grin and continued actions, she knew better than to dodge, he’d take the weapon in the face. Kagome hissed, counting the seconds in her head as the phantom ringing grew louder, in ears only she possessed. Her instincts were screaming at her. She had to do something.

Five… Four….

Time slowed down, Souta’s left arm came up to lock under the blade of her Kusarigama, his right arm flying out wide with a parry. She let her grip slip on the wooden staff of her Kusarigama in order to angle her hold and wrench them both down to the side. She dug the tip of her blade into the ground.

Two… One…

She kicked her legs into the air and looked over her shoulder in time to se the Chakram screamed between her leg and fly over Souta’s left shoulder. The boy’s eyes followed the weapon as Kagome cart wheeled to the side, dislodging her weapon and springing back up for an attack.

“That was brilliant-!”

Furious swings and side-sweeps cut the boy off, forcing him to swing the Tonfa’s faster, his grip sliding and tightening with the whirl and twist of his movements.
The Chakram lodged itself into a boulder, leading up to a large mountain side. Neither noticed, but Kagome’s survival instincts pointed out to her a docile weapon, filing the information for later use if necessary.

Kagome twisted, crouching low, the two blade’s of her miniature scythe’s sparking against the plated armor under the kimono of her brother’s stomach. The boy leapt back with a hiss, Kagome sensed victory, primal instinct and warrior intuition pushing her forward for the killing blow. She leapt, with the precision and the grace of pouncing wolf.

Souta’s brown eyes opened to see the sky speeding above him, he blinked and saw his sister fly over him. Honey brown met ocean blue as Kagome unfolded her arms, the deadly blade’s gleaming with a silent ring as Souta’s back slammed into the ground, punching the air from his lungs.

Kagome’s knee’s cracked against the plate armor, but adrenaline and instincts refused to let the sensation seep through, as she crossed the blade’s around her brother’s throat.
Time stopped, the air held its breath, the earth’s pulse echoed out of existence. The only sound Souta could hear, the only sensation the boy could feel, was the heavy thump of his heart, the heat of his body and the wheezing air that burned against his throat.

“You’re dead.”

Kagome announced and sat up, removing the blade’s, her pulse lowering quickly as the adrenaline was drained out of her veins, leaving behind a shallow and hallow rush, a phantom flow of incompletion. Disturbed, but only slightly, by the sensation, she sat up and rose carefully from her brother’s chest, sheathing her weapon’s against her kimono’s sash and offering him a hand. Souta clapped his palm against her wrist as she tugged him to his feet.

“No fair, nee-san…”

Kagome chuckled and blew her bangs out of her face, reaching over his shoulder and yanking the Chakram blade from its prison, handing it to her brother with a lopsided grin.

“You’ve gotten better.”

“Yeah, but you have a sixth sense about fighting, its not fair!”

“Souta-kun, you just-.”

“Oi! Who the fuck are you, and what are you doing on Genkai’s Training Ground?”

Kagome casually tipped her head back and looked over her shoulder, her eyebrows rising when a chilling ripple crept up the length of her spine.
Youkia…

Her instincts whispered, her fingers twitching against the heads of her Kusarigama.

Power… Indescribable power… Yes, oh yes… We shall have fun with these…

Her eyebrow twitched as she swallowed, turning her face the three men who walked towards her brother and herself, separating with the grace of a pack of wolves, blocking exits without being obvious.
Her eyes narrowed and flashed pink for an instant, as she spread her stance.

“Souta.”

She spoke his name meaningfully, carefully and slowly. The boy’s Chakram rang softly as he fingered the blade, coming to his sister’s left.

“We are trespassing?”

“You are.”

A boy wearing blue jeans and a white muscle T, with slick black hair and mahogany brown eyes never strayed from the direct path, while the demon’s moved to put ten steps between them, effectively while subtly, caging them against the mountain side.

“We were unaware.”

“Now you know. Get out.”

The man stopped, his hands in his pockets, his aura unfriendly, his eyes cold and unforgiving. Kagome lifted her chin with a smile.

“Now hold on a minute, couldn’t we settle this on a more…Primal level?”

To the man’s left, a short demon in black, with a silver starburst above his brow, stopped. To the man’s right, a beautiful red haired boy, with the aura and spirit of a demon, yet still withholding a human soul, slipped his hand into his pocket, also stopping to pose beautifully.

Kagome looked the demon up and down, satisfied, she met his gaze; a startling emerald, clashing dramatically with his gorgeous golden eyes.

“Kagome.”

A note of worry crept into the octaves of her brother’s voice.
“I think, perhaps we could come to an understanding.”
Souta shifted uncomfortably at her side.
“I don’t like this.”

“Understanding? Their’s nothing to be understood, girly.”

Souta swallowed at his sister, who’s gaze was now locked with the man who gave him the most chill’s. Even the little demon who stood no more than twenty paces from him, didn’t send a chill down his spine like the man squaring off with his sister.

“Don’t call me, girly.”

“Strike a nerve?”
The man taunted, his grin spreading into a leer. Kagome smiled sweetly at him.
“Why don’t we settle this the old fashion way? We win, and we can come here anytime we want. You win, and you’ll never see us again.”

The red head spoke, his velvet tone making Kagome’s eyes close, even as her face turned towards the demon. Her eyes fluttered open.

“What makes you so confident? No disrespect, but we saw you two fighting, and judging by the way you move, theirs no way you can-.”

“Do not presume to understand me, demon.”
Kagome’s voice was airy, unconcerned as she turned back to the black haired man before her.
“Deal?”

“If I refuse?”

Kagome shrugged and fingered her weapons, looking down at them fondly.
“If you refuse, then we stay. One way or another, violence will ensue.”

“I say we take her up on that offer, Yusuke. It’s been a while since I saw a female with a blade, who knows how to use it.”

Kagome’s eyes fluttered closed as the baritone voice of the demon who came to her shoulder, raced down her spine with an unwanted memory and sensation.
Taste his blood, feel his weapon!
Her eyes opened as she swallowed, her pulse jumping, adrenaline seeping into her veins, thickening her blood.

“Souta.” She turned to look at him.

“Kagome.” He answered, his eyes searching her. Her eyelids hooded as her irises flashed pink, her soul rising to the surface and clouding her mind with instinct, bloodlust and power.

She let her head tip back, the Shikon no Tama blinking to life inside her heart, her life blood swirling around the jewel. The jewel filtered through blood, shrinking until the souls caught in eternal battle were flowing easily through her circular system, tightening her muscles and strengthening her flaws.

Souta noticed this and smiled, cocking his head at the men before them.
“You have no idea what you’ve just done.”

The man identified as Yusuke uncrossed his arms and smirked back at the boy.
“If you think I’m scared a girl-urk.”

Kagome shivered, tilting her head to the side as Yusuke’s forehead touched her shoulder. She trembled under the orgasmic feel of the Shikon no Tama’s power, aligning with her soul feeding her power and cradling her soul. Even her eyes trembled with break-point insanity as she looked down at Yusuke, pulling her fist out of his ribcage and stepping back enough for him to fall to his knees. She round housed him up side the head, while on the return trip, flinging her arms out and sending curling waves of energy out at the demons who now stood on either side of her.

She moaned and tipped her head back, a smile of sheer lunacy pulled her lips away from her teeth as the raw energy ate through the ground, sending rooster tails of soil and rock.
Souta’s lips fell open at the awesome and raw energy that tangibly spliced through the air, sending shockwaves of power in pulsing waves. The two demons managed to overcome their shock at such a beautifully dangerous display of power, and leapt out of harms way. Kagome lowered her hands with a shiver as the energy she expelled was rapidly sucked back into her body like a vortex. Like time had been reversed without effecting living things, the shockwaves retracted, the rips in the air sealed themselves and the upturned earth resettled, leaving the field back in its natural form.

“Oh wow…”

Souta whispered in awe, grabbing the sides of his head as his eyes widened, searching his sister’s form in amazement.

Yusuke shoved himself to his knee, shaking his head with a growl of impatience. Looking up, however, he saw a slender pair of ankles, leading up to a red hakama and further to a white haroi, and even further to an emotionless, beautiful face with eerie glowing pink eyes.

“Oh…Shit…”

Suddenly an earth rattling roar split through the air, crippling all but Kagome. She looked up to see a large Fire Cat descend from the sky, landing with such force that the earth shattered under her in a perfect circles, sending up clouds of rushing soil and rock.

“Kirara…”

Kagome whispered, the pink in her iris fading, replaced by a more lucid ocean blue. She blinked as the adrenaline faded, the Shikon no Tama retracing its steps to solidify within her heart, blinking once as its power was once again sealed into dormancy.

“Kirara.”

Kagome said again more fondly, her shoulders relaxing.

“Kagome!”

She gasped and looked towards the tree line to see a gold and red blur. She blinked and found herself in familiar arms.

“Sh… Shippou-kun?”

The kitsune was a full two heads taller than her, his long red hair in a ponytail at the base of his neck, wearing his father’s pelt as a vest, with a forest green kimono.

“Thank the Gods I found you in time.”

She released a breath, feeling the last traces of the Shikon no Tama’s influence waver and die.

“I did it again, huh?”

“Fighting always did bring out the worst in you, Kagome.”

“…I know.”
