Title: Aka Nichibotsu
Chapter 5: Omoide no Hiei-chan
The village was such a peaceful place scene. Nestled atop a grassy hill, with a small creek at the bottom and all the animals in the surrounding forests would gather down there. It was such a cozy village, it made you almost not want to leave. Never did they know that this village existed, it was so well guarded by barriers and so cut off from the rest of the world. Youkai, hanyou, and ningens lived here peacefully, together in harmony. Only Botan and Hiei were not in shock at how everyone interacted. Botan had been here many times before and only Hiei knew how this village was during the war.
"Ahh.. It's so peaceful here," Kuwabara sighed in contentment.
"Hai, it makes everyone feel that way," Botan told him as they stood at the base of the hill. "The villagers say that the sorcerer, who was part of the Shi Karura enchanted this village so it would always feel safe and protected."
"Where is the 'Shi Karura' now? And this sorcerer?" Kurama asked as they walked up the small path leading to the village.
"No one knows. They disappeared about two hundred years ago, after the war that destroyed the castle where they lived... Now, even the Gods believe that they were just some fairy tale," Botan answered as they reached the village gates.
"If they're just fairy tales, then how'd you explain this aura and the barriers?" Yusuke asked.
Botan made to answer, but Hiei spoke first, "they weren't fairy tales, they were real. And it wasn't a sorcerer, it was a sorceress."
"How do you know this?" Botan asked him with evident shock. But, he never answered, he just continued walking into the village.
Everyone shrugged slightly and followed him inside. They saw every villager outside with disbelief and relief on their face. Everyone was silent and unblinking, as if they thought something would vanish. A small girl cried out and ran through the people. When she broke free from everyone, the tantei saw that it was a young, 9 year old girl. She stood in front of everyone, openly gaping at Hiei. To everyone, it looked like they were old friends.
She began to tear as she looked at Hiei. "Hiei-kun!" she cried out as she launched herself on to Hiei.
Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, and Botan took a step towards Hiei, to stop him if he decided to try and kill the little girl. But they were all shocked when he hugged her slightly and gently detached her.
"You haven't forgotten Rin-chan, ne, Hiei-kun?" She asked him with big eyes. "Cause Rin-chan hasn't forgotten you!"
"Iie," he answered softly to her, "iie, Rin-chan."
"Good," she said to him like a command. "Now are you and your friend's here to see Sesshoumaru-sama's castle? 'Cause Rin-chan can show you the way, cause Rin-chan knows," she told them in her cute way. They all nodded unable to say no to her, and she gave them a bright smile. Dumbly, they followed her as she lead them to the castle.
"Damn, she's good," Kuwabara whispered to Yusuke as they were walking away from the village. Kurama smiled at Kuwabara's word, while Hiei just smirked. Hiei knew what was coming as Rin turned around and glared at Kuwabara.
"'Course Rin-chan's good!" Rin yelled at Kuwabara, "You don't expect me to live five hundred years and not learn from aneue and aunties!"
"Hn. Baka," Hiei began where Rin left off, "Rin-chan's been living with them for over five hundred years, so of course she knows how to get what she wants from people.. By the way, Rin-chan. Where are they?"
"Oh! Rin-chan forgot to tell you!" She bowed slightly in an embarrassed manner. "They're off in the makai, on some important mission, but they wouldn't tell Rin-chan what they're doing," Rin answered him in that cute way of hers again.
"Yusuke chose this time to butt in, "Wait! You're five hundred years old!?"
"Hai," she answered simply.
"How is that Rin-chan?" Kurama asked politely.
"Rin-chan's immortal!" she answered with a bright smile.
"That means your aneue and aunties are immortal too!" Kuwabara exclaimed as everyone looked at him surprised.
"Wow, the saru can think," Yusuke said, extremely amazed.
"Hn. I have to agree with the tantei," Hiei remarked as another verbal fight broke out among the three.
Botan walked over to Rin, "Who are your aunties and aneue?"
"Rin-chan's not s'pposed to say, but you might know them as the Shi Karura," Rin answered her question as everyone stopped fighting, shocked at her words. "Well, we're almost at the castle, so we should continue."
Everyone followed behind her silently, shocked that this little girl knew the Shi Karura. But they still didn't know how Hiei knew them, and knowing Hiei, if he didn't want anyone to know then no one would.
Eventually a ruined castle came into view. Even as destroyed as it was, it was still beautiful and took away everyone's breath. Only Rin and Hiei continued walking when everyone else stopped.
"If you were sent by reikai to see the memories of the occupants, then keep walking," Rin said over her shoulder, "If you think this is beautiful, just wait until you see the memories of it from when it wasn't ruined."
Everyone ran after them to catch up and stood in front of the large gates. Everyone gasped as the scene in front of them wavered and began to change. "Looks like you get to see the first memory before you even enter," Rin told them as they saw a magnificent castle behind a large training field.
The sound of swords clashing met their ears. A figure dressed all in red training clothes appeared on one side of the field after the sound had faded. On the other side, a young Hiei was shown. Both of them were using wooden training swords.
"You're gettin' better runt, but you haveta be faster!" the red figure shouted as he disappeared and reappeared where young Hiei was standing as Hiei fell out of the field.
"That's okay, Hiei-kun," a figured dressed in elegant miko garbs said as she knelt down to Hiei's level and healed him. "Look for an opening that appears when he gets ready to strike. Keep your senses looking for that spot and don't let him trick you into making your senses go elsewhere," the woman whispered to Hiei as she pulled him up to his feet.
"Feh. How's the runt s'pposed ta know how to really fight if you keep on healin' him?" the red figure asked the woman before the fight began again.
"Aw. Is the koinu-chan feeling jealous?" a kitsune about the same age as the hanyou walked out with Rin. "Is the koinu-chan upset that even his own mate won't help him?" the kitsune continued to taunt the red figure.
"Shut it kit!" the red figure shouted at the kitsune. "One of these days I'm goin' ta get you away from Kagome and tear off your tail and jam it down your throat!"
"Idle threats again InuYasha?" a monk came out from behind the kitsune. "Maybe we should have let that silver kitsune put a few more holes in that over inflated ego of yours.. Maybe then you would be brought down a few more notches. But, until we meet him again, we'll have young Hiei poke those holes. It's rather nice when you're not being cocky."
Everyone snickered at InuYasha, as he growled at them. "You know, I've always wondered what it's like to have all of your outlooks on things, and when I tried to I found that I couldn't get my head that far up my ass," InuYasha said to them, mainly looking at the kitsune, who stepped up to the challenge.
"Step back Hiei," the kitsune told him as he walked onto the training field. "I'll show you what you have to do to knock out that stick that's jammed up his ass."
The miko let out a sigh and turned to the monk, "Go get Kagome-chan before they kill each other."
The scene faded as everyone stood in silent shock. For them, today just seemed to be full of surprises. Not even Kurama, who had known Hiei the longest, knew that Hiei once belonged to a family that seemed very loving. Everyone saw Rin smile slightly at that memory.
"Rin-chan forgot all about that time," she laughed slightly. "Inu-ojiisan and Shippou-kun were in the hospital wing for almost a week after that fight. Do you remember that week Hiei-kun?"
"Hn. Hai, I do," he answered her.
Rin smiled sadly, "you know, when you do that, you sound exactly like aneue."
"What happened to her?" Hiei practically demanded.
Rin turned around and started to walk into the castle grounds, "the memories will show you soon enough, Hiei-kun."
Everyone followed silently, wanting to see what other memories were in this castle. They walked into a large entrance way, that appeared to have been made of marble, but looked like rough stones now. Everyone stopped when they saw Rin stop, and it wasn't soon after they saw the monk from earlier walk by them. The whole entrance way changed, and they were right- it was made of marble, yet it also had gold designs of dragons and phoenixes etched onto them.
"Come on, we have to follow to see the whole memory," Rin told them as they followed the monk down a hallway to the right.
He stopped right before what looked to be a wall. There was a small stone statue of a phoenix in flight right next to the door, and the monk turned the phoenix to the right. They heard a small click when the phoenix was in place, and the wall in front of the monk slid away to reveal a room. As soon as the monk stepped in, the door slid back into place.
Knowing they had to go on, and since he was the closest, Kuwabara turned the broken phoenix statue to the right and the door slid open jerkily. They all stepped inside as soon as they saw a young Hiei watching a woman, who was obviously a Lady, stir something inside a large cauldron.
"With this type of poison Hiei-chan, you have to stir it constantly or else it will come out as water," the woman told young Hiei as she continued to stir it.
Young Hiei covered his nose and backed away from the cauldron, "it burns my nose Sango-obasan."
"Gomen ne, but that's how you know it came out right," she told him as she put out the fire and moved the cauldron away. "Next lesson, I'll show you how to make masks so you won't be bothered so much by the smell, alright?"
"Okay!" Hiei answered her as the monk cleared his throat.
"Miroku-ojisama? I thought you weren't s'pposed to come for another few months? And is Inu-ojisan and Shippou-san here too?" Hiei asked him eagerly.
Miroku chuckled slightly, "hai, InuYasha and Shippou are here as well. I believe InuYasha is spending his time with Kikyou-sama and Shippou is with Rin somewhere in the castle," he answered only Hiei's last question, but he didn't seem to notice. "Is Sango teaching much about tayaiji poisons and youkai extermination?"
"Hai! I'm learning lots from Sango-obasan!" he answered before turning to face Sango, "but I thought all the tayaijis were killed about three hundred years ago?"
Sango looked torn for a moment, as if fighting off some bad memories. Miroku saw this and came to her aid, "Hiei, why don't you go find Rin and Shippou? I'm sure they would love to spend some time with you."
"Alright," Hiei said a little sadly, but left the room none the less.
Miroku waited until the door had closed completely, "you haven't told him about your past?"
"Don't lecture me on this houshi-sama," Sango warned him as she began to put away some things. "You haven't told him your past either, no one's told him about their pasts- not even Kagome-chan."
"I guess you're right, none of us have. He's too young to know all the things we suffered through, especially your past since it is the most tragic," Miroku said thoughtfully as he watched Sango put away everything and begin to store the poison they had made in the lesson.
"I just.." she sighed, "I just don't want him to know what it's like to have to kill your own sibling, or be the only one left of your kind.. I guess we are kindred spirits, since we both have no family even if it is for different reasons, even thought that may be true..." she broke off as a tear slid down her cheek.
"You don't want him to know the other side of the spectrum in losing everything you hold dear. He lost his family because they didn't want him, you lost your family because they were slaughtered and you don't want him to know that, right?" Miroku finished for her.
She could only nod her head. Miroku wrapped his arms around her in a comforting manner.
"Sango, I know the pain of losing your family and village still hurts you, but you are not the only one who has lost everything. Our whole strange group has lost everything we held dear to us, yet we created new reasons to go on living by staying with each other," Miroku reminded her. "Look at all of us- InuYasha was cast out of his home by Sesshoumaru after InuYasha's human mother and their father died. Kikyou and Kaede's parents died at an early age, and then Kaede died about three hundred years ago. Sesshoumaru lost both of his parents and was left alone until he was found by Rin. Rin lost her family to war and sickness and then was later killed by Kouga's pack, only to be brought back to life by Sesshoumaru. Then there's Shippou, who had his father skinned by the Thunder Brothers and his mother was already dead."
Sango looked up at him, "you're leaving yourself out. You lost your grandfather, grandmother, mother and father to the same curse that you will carry for eternity. And you also forgot about Kagome-chan."
"Yes, that is true, but if it wasn't for everything that happened, we would never have met.. And if it also wasn't for Kagome-sama shattering the jewel and therefore writing herself a new fate. You know, I think the reason you and Kagome-sama are so attached to one another is because you two are similar in more ways than one," Miroku told her.
"You'll tell me what you mean by that later, now why are you here early than normal for your recently discovered roaming ways?" Sango asked him.
"Well, I've been here since dawn with InuYasha and Shippou, giving Sesshoumaru more information on the youkai army that is slowly marching it's way here.. And then I decided to see my most beautiful wife," he answered her in a way that was implying something. She just looked at him like she wasn't going to believe his smooth talking because he was hiding something.
"Houshi-sama, first off- if that hand of yours goes any lower you'll wake up to find it missing. And second- what are you really down here for?" she told him in a no nonsense way.
He sighed in defeat, "Nothing can get past you. Sesshoumaru has called a meeting, only Kagome, Shippou, Rin, and Hiei will not be present at it."
"I can understand Hiei and Rin not being present, but why Kagome and Shippou too?" she asked him confused.
"Shippou has to stay behind to distract Hiei and Rin and Sesshoumaru said he would only involve Kagome when the threat of war has been confirmed because if they manage to get here, then we will have no doubt that they are coming for what she protects," Miroku answered her as they left the room.
"Did you know about their pasts Rin-chan?" Hiei asked her as soon as they stepped out of the room.
Rin nodded, "hai, Rin-chan knew only cause Rin-chan lived through a few of their pasts. Those were most horrible times in the Sengoku Jidai. They never got a chance to settle down and just relax while being hunted. Rin-chan felt most happy when they were finally able to live normal lives after they had killed that hanyou."
"That hanyou?" Kurama asked her.
"Hai. He was the reason each one of them had suffered so. Rin-chan thinks he was called Naraku, but Rin-chan can't remember exactly since it was five hundred years ago," Rin answered him.
"Whoa.. These memories are getting deep.. I never thought that Lords, Ladies and Generals of ancient times ever had problems like these," Kuwabara remarked as Rin lead them down a hallways that appeared to lead down in to the mess hall and the servants quarters. Everyone just sighed at how narrow minded he thinks.
"Kuwabara Lords, Ladies and Generals are people too," Botan reminded him, "they have their own drama just like everyone else. In fact, they are just like everyone else except for the fact that they carry a title."
"Oh.. Never thought of it that way," Kuwabara responded, slightly scratching the back of his head.
Yusuke mumbled something that sounded oddly like 'you can even think?'However, no one heard that besides Hiei and Kurama. But those two had a suspicion that Rin had heard as well.
Rin laughed slightly, "you two act just like Sango-obasan and Miroku-ojisama."
"We do not!!" Yusuke and kuwabara yelled at the same time, making Hiei and Kurama wince slightly from the volume.
"Be silent, all of you! The next memory is starting," Rin yelled at all of them as they all promptly shut their mouths.
There were many youkai servants milling about the beautiful hallway. The floors and upper half of the walls were a sleek grey marble, while the bottom half of the walls were a dark cherry colored wood that had simple, yet elegant patterns carved into them. A child's laughter could be heard and the sound of running feet. All the servants stopped, before shrugging their shoulders and continuing with their work. It was after all, merely a child's game of tag. Not soon after they went back to work, young Hiei could be seen running through them.
"You'll never catch me aneue!" young Hiei yelled over his shoulder at someone behind him. All the servants had the common sense to move off to the sides of the hallway as the next figure came into view.
It was a young woman with raven black hair and blue/grey eyes. She had on a black karura kimono that was tied with a dark grey obi. It was apparent that she wasn't running her fastest after young Hiei. Both of them ran into the mess hall as everyone continued with their work, acting as if it was an everyday thing.
"Come on you guys! Rin-chan wants to see Hiei-kun be embarrassed by aneue!" Rin shouted gleefully as she ran into the mess hall. Everyone soon ran after her, not wanting to miss the chance at seeing the great and emotionless Hiei being embarrassed.
The woman had snatched Hiei up from behind and held him. He was going to protest, but was silence when she put her hand over his mouth.
"Sango-chan and Kikyou-chan are coming.. Wanna frighten them?" she asked him with a wicked smile.
"Sure!" Hiei answered her as they hid behind one of the doors.
Sango and Kikyou soon walked in and appeared to be thinking deeply about something. The could see the woman whisper something to young Hiei and he nodded.
Hiei slowly sneaked along the edge of the wall and snuck up behind Sango. He said 'boo!' when he was right behind her. She creamed and ended up backing into Kikyou, who backed into a servant at the door who was carrying a large tray off food. And she fell over, reflexively tossing the food up into the air as the woman who was chasing Hiei earlier ran towards him. She however didn't make it in time to stop the food from landing on Hiei. The scene faded as they all began to pick off the clumps of food from Hiei.
By the time the scene faded, everyone was on the ground laughing like there was no tomorrow. Hie was the only one who wasn't on the ground, and he was looking down right pissed. And who wouldn't if your tough guy image had been ruined by some stupid memory of when you were too young and slow to get out of the way of a plate of food? Rin was the first one to recover enough to get to her feet.
"Rin-chan *laughs* always wanted *laughs more* to know how *giggles* that happened!" she fell to the ground again, when a new wave of laughter overtook her.
Hiei scowled, "are we going to see the other memories or are you bakas going to lay there and laugh all day?"
"Sorry, Hiei, but it's just so funny seeing that happen to you!" Botan told him as she got to her feet.
"Yea! Who knew the great Hiei got covered in food while standing there never knowing what was coming!?" Yusuke exclaimed.
"It's not like you haven't caught us doing something just as childish as that, Hiei," Kurama calmly told him as soon as he recovered from laughing.
"Hn," was Hiei's only reply as he walked down the hallway.
Everyone began to follow Hiei and it wasn't soon after that Rin took the lead again.
They walked all over the first floor, but there were no memories left down there for now. They saw that it was getting dark, so they all headed upstairs to sleep in the rooms that had managed to stay intact. Hiei and Rin were surprised to see that their rooms had remained intact, so they took their old rooms, leaving the others to find their own.
Sorry about the very long wait, but I was very busy. But, now I can update more regularly since school is out, so I will post the rest of them seeing the lost memories soon. And thanks to all the people who reviewed, I had no idea that people would like this story! So, thanks!
