Ithilelda: Hey guys! Just thought I'd drop in to say hello and send another chapter your way.

Inu Yasha: It's about time wench. I was getting tired of sitting on my ass waiting for you to type another chapter.

Ithilelda: I thought I told you to call me either Ithilelda or Isako… (eyebrow twitches)

Inu Yasha: Feh…whatever. Like you can do anything about it.

Ithilelda: BAKA!!! I am the supreme authoress of this fic!!! I can make you strip naked and run through the streets of Tokyo singing "I'm a Little Teapot" if I want!!!! (starts typing furiously)

Inu Yasha: (nervous laugh as he looks over Ithilelda shoulder and sees what she is typing) Please…heh heh…anything but that. (Inu pauses)

(Miroku appears)

Inu Yasha: Please don't.

Ithilelda: There…all done.

(Inu starts professing his undying love for Miroku and then kisses him)

Inu Yasha: You will pay for that bitch!!!

Miroku: I don't know…that was a pretty good kiss…for a guy.

Inu Yasha: (edges away from Miroku) You're sick!!

Ithilelda: (laughs) All's fair in love and war Inu Yasha.

Inu Yasha: You will pay.

An Old Friend and New Obligations

Chapter 8

"So…" said Kurama, "It's been a long time Sango."

"Do I know you?" Sango asked

"I know that you probably don't recognize me but…it's me, Yoko." (a/n: I know that some people spell Yoko with a "u" in it but that's how I'm gonna spell it unless someone strongly objects)

"Yo…ko?" She said in disbelief

"I know my appearance has been altered but I am the same demon. Perhaps this will convince you." and so saying he transformed into Yoko Kurama before their eyes.

"Yoko! Wow…I never thought I'd see you again." Sango said in shock

"You know him?!" Kuwabaka asked stupidly

"Yes…we were…I mean he was…" she stuttered.

"For a time we were intimate. I fell for her when she attempted to destroy me because I stole from her." Yoko said walking over to the taijiya, "You are just as beautiful as I remember. A rose for the lady?" he said as he handed her a rose.

"Th…Thank you?" Sango said blushing furiously

Miroku seemed slightly angry but no one seemed to notice. Kurama transformed back to Shuichi (sp?) and he and Sango began to chat about what had happened after they had been separated. The others began some small talk and were getting to know each other when Kagome returned with some drinks.

"I didn't know what you guys would want so I just picked some things." she said," The house is empty except for my mom so you guys can come in and we can try and come up with a plan."

They all shuffled into the house and took seats around the living room. They had started to talk when Kagome's mom came in.

"Hello honey and…" she started to say," Oh my, you seem to have quite a lot of guests dear. I'll make some tea and find you some snacks." Mrs. Higurashi then bustled off to the kitchen to make some tea and snacks for her daughter and her, no doubt, hungry guests.

"That's my mom. She's really nice but she's bit of a worrywart sometimes." Kagome said," Any way…so Naraku must have almost all of the rest of the shards now so he will be really powerful. Inu Yasha, Hiei, and I will take him on. Sango, you, Kurama, and Miroku will take on the demon army and Kohaku. Yusuke and Sesshoumaru will take on Kagura. That leaves Kouga, Kuwabara, and Shippou to fight Kanna. Jaken, you get to run around and help out whoever you can while Rin stays safely back here with my mom." Everyone agreed to the plan and looked around the people that they might, for all they know, be fighting their last battle with.

"If you finish off your assignment go help someone else with theirs. If everyone finishes their task before Naraku is dead then you all can come and help destroy him. This is it guys, the final battle. Say your prayers or do whatever you need to tonight `cus tomorrow we attack." Kagome said firmly

Everyone left to do their own thing. The Inu gang mostly stayed around the Higurashi shine grounds except Sango who went back to Kurama's house with him to talk. Yusuke and Kuwabara went to the local arcade to unwind and play some videogames. Hiei just disappeared, as he usually did. Kagome went up to her room to relax. She wrote in her diary and did the massive pile of homework that had built up from her college classes. She was just getting ready to lay down for a nap when a tap at her window caught her attention.

It was Hiei. She opened the window and let him in.

"What is it with demons and coming in through the window? Is it a rule or something?" she asked.

"Hn. I came to talk." he said.

"So talk." she replied

"……I'm not sure how to say this but…thank you."

"For what?"

"For showing me that true strength does not lay with in a jewel or some other magical item but within myself."

"When did I teach you that?"

"When I first met you. The fact that you defeated me without using the jewel baffled me at first, however, I came to realize that you were able to defeat me because you were relying on your own strength to do so and not some item you picked up. That was when I vowed that I would stop chasing artifacts and relics to gain power. I decided that if I ever wanted to be truly strong I would have to rely on MY own strength the way that you relied on yours. Thank you."

Hiei leaned in as she tried to respond and kissed her. It started as a chaste kiss, devoid of passion or romance, but soon turned into something more. When the opportunity presented itself his tongue swept into her mouth earning him a slight moan from her as he lowered her onto the bed. After a few minutes the kiss broke leaving both of them breathless. Kagome stared up at the fire demon above her and sighed,

"Well I never saw that coming." she said.

"To be honest, neither did I." Hiei responded

He began to lean in for another kiss but was thrown off of the bed and into the wall by a sudden burst of wind. The wind gathered in a vortex in the middle of the room. Kagura appeared in the center of it.

"How touching." she said snidely," To bad the moment couldn't last."

Kagura flicked her fan and unleashed another gust of wind, this time throwing Kagome out of the open window and onto the ground below. Kagome was still recovering from the shock of the fall when Kagura struck again.

"Dance of Blades!" Kagura shouted as she unleashed the attack on the helpless miko.

"Chikusho." Kagome said as she barely managed to jump out of the way.

"You won't get away that easily Kagome." Kagura said throwing another Dance of Blades Kagome's way. Kagome barely dodged it again, wishing that she had her bow. Kagura caught her off guard and blasted her into a tree.

"Baka," she said," I am Kagura of the wind. The likes of you cannot defeat me. Dance of Blades!" This time the attack caught Kagome head on. However, by some miracle, she wasn't torn to shreds. She slumped onto the ground, bleeding profusely from a wound on her stomach. Kagura bent down and whispered into her ear,

"Foolish girl, I told you that you couldn't defeat me." she said as she took the jewel shards that Kagome carried with her at all times.

"You are the baka, woman." a voice said.

"Who goes?!" Kagura asked as she turned to see the person who dared intrude on her battle. Hiei jumped down from Kagome's window and slashed at Kagura with his sword.

"I said, you are the baka, woman. You attacked me unprovoked. Anyone who does that ends up food for my kokuryu."

"Kokuryu? So you are a user of the darkness flame techniques. Well, this should be interesting." Kagura said

"If you consider dying interesting then, yes, it will be." Hiei shot back as he came in with a few more swings of his sword. They sparred back and forth for a while. When they broke off their attacks they were both breathing heavily.

"You're a good fighter, little man." Kagura said

"You're not completely incompetent yourself." Hiei replied

"We are both nearly out of energy now." Kagura commented.

"Then this will be the last attack."

"Yes, may the strongest live."

Kagura launched her Dance of Blades toward Hiei while he dodged through the crescents of energy and appeared in front of Kagura.

"I win." he said as the sliced the incarnation of Naraku in two. He then rushed over to where Kagome lay on the ground in a pool of her own blood.

"I screwed up." she said before passing out.

Kagome awoke the next morning in her room with a killer headache.

"Damn my head hurts." she mumbled as she sat up

"Nearly bleeding to death will do that." Kurama said from the corner of the room where he sat," I'm glad you're awake, not to mention alive. Everyone was up all of last night worrying about you. Especially your mother, Inu Yasha, Sango, and, for some reason, Hiei. We very nearly lost you. I shall go tell the others that you are awake. You know, this is the second time I've had to nurse you out of a faint."

Kagome laughed weakly at this and tried to stand up but failed, falling back down onto her bed.

"Maybe I better stay put." Kagome thought.

Kagome rested in her room for a few more hours until she got her strength back and then held a strategy session in the living room.

"Well since Kagura is gone that makes things a bit easier on us. Yusuke, you'll now help out Sango, Kurama, and Miroku. Sesshoumaru, you will now fight Kanna with Kouga, Kuwabara, and Shippou. Is everybody clear on their jobs?"

Every on nodded in the affirmative and Kagome continued,

"In that case we had best be leaving. I'll lead because I can sense his jewel shards. Let's go."

The group of fighters left the Higurashi residence and strode down the stairs and into the street. Kagome led them through the local park and up a steep hill to a large mansion. She stopped at the gate and turned to face the group.

"This is it guys. Get ready. We're about to enter the lion's den, so to speak." She said," I'm really glad to have met you all and I wouldn't trade these last few years of my life for anything."

Everyone silently agreed, looking around at their old and new friends. Kagome pushed the gates open with one hand and the group walked into the courtyard.

Ithilelda: Well that's it for now. Next chapter: Kanna dies and they confront Naraku. Stay tuned. I gotta go now. If I hang around too long Inu Yasha will find me. Sayonara. Ja ne.
