Chapter One: Warm Welcome

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

A yellow knapsack was thrown rather hard over a well side, making it roll on the pliant, lush grass beneath it. A young girl emerged from the well, sighing as the unbearable heat radiated down upon her black hair that continued to absorb the insufferable sun's rays. Her chest moving up and down as the young Japanese girl inhaled and exhaled the clean, beautiful air of the Sengoku Jidia, she opened her brown eyes and smiled.

Higurashi Kagome felt her world brighten as the lush plains of flowers and forestry met her eyes. InuYasha's time was so much more beautiful and serene than future Tokyo! Sighing, the girl bent and picked up the rather large and heavy bag. Stumbling a bit from its weight, she continued to walk through the grass. Her brown leather shoes shuffling through the weeds, she glanced around her.

`I wonder how everyone has been since I have been gone. It has been three days…' She felt herself become uneasy at that reminder.

Three days she had left the anger-piqued InuYasha behind with her exasperated friends and comrades. Kagome winced as she then remembered InuYasha's heated shouts,

“Keh! I don't care, wench! Go back to your time!” He yelled before jumping in a tree, glaring angrily at the sky.

Miroku had then approached the angry and confused girl and sighed. “Kagome-sama, InuYasha is merely upset that you are leaving yet again. We have been close to Naraku as of the last few days and he is worried of your safety. Do not worry about him, Kagome-sama. We will watch over InuYasha during your departure.” The houshi announced calmly.

Nodding, she had then left the disgruntled hanyou and annoyed tachi behind to go do her final exams.

Shaking her head, Kagome glanced down at her chest. The tiny bottle held only one shikon kakera. Because there was only one left. Kagome felt her stomach churn at the reminder of their last battle in the youkai's stomach.

`This Jewel was turning InuYasha into a full demon because of its evil aura…If I had not been there he would have lost all control.' She thought to herself numbly.

The memory of her beloved hanyou's face transforming into that bloodthirsty beast and his scream of pain as the evil aura devoured his soul still frightened and worried her. InuYasha had since not been the same. Now he was even more forlone, cautious and aggressive. Poor Shippou-chan had all too well felt InuYasha's pent up emotions upon his cranium.

Continuing to walk, the girl froze as something pricked the back of her neck. Something was watching her. But what? Her brown eyes becoming nervous as her feet shuffled underneath her from her anxiety, the young miko looked around her cautiously.

The once singing birds had now silenced, foretelling a stranger in the forest. The insects and butterflies now hid and trembled. No gentle breeze caressed the blades of grass.
Her body stiffening as her untrained miko abilities screamed danger, Kagome slowly slid the knapsack to the ground. Her lips trembling while her hand shook, she drew up her arrow and notched a bow.

`Wait until your enemy comes towards you for a lethal attack. Using your superior miko abilities that are dwelling inside of you, Kagome-chan, hit your target between the shoulder and adjourning of the chest. It will render him to shock and give you enough time to scream for help or begin to escape.' Sango's lessons echoed in her head.

Her chest heaving from fear and exhilaration, she waited. And waited.

A pair of cold, golden eyes watched the tensed girl with sadistic amusement. What an interesting ningen. Her shaking stance belied her courage. She was terrified yet had the stupidity to still try and defend herself against him. He had not meant to allow so much of his youki out but it had slipped when he saw it.

The shikon kakera.

The golden eyes hardened into two patches of chipped ice as the youkai remembered why he wanted such an item. Not for power but for revenge. Naraku. That bastard of a youkai had killed his comrades and fellow brothers. If he could just kill this ningen onna and take the shikon kakera, he would soon have that ambitious and disgusting creature after him.

`Then I will avenge you all.' He told himself as he stood up straight, walking out towards the shaken miko.

Kagome froze as a shadowy figure slipped out of the forest and stood arrogantly before her, less than thirty meters away. Licking her parched lips, she gulped but continued to hold her arrow at the youkai. Her brown eyes wide she then placed an angry face upon her beautiful features.

“D-Don't you come any closer, youkai, or I will shoot you.” She stated as bravely as she could, her arrow being let a little looser to prove her words.

The youkai raised a silver brow at that, his face blank from any emotions.
“You, a simple ningen onna threaten myself?” That deep, sensual voice asked frostily.

Kagome gulped then nodded, glaring stubbornly at the demon. His golden eyes narrowed. Kagome looked into those sunlight orbs with concealed awe. This youkai…was beautiful. Long silver hair hung to his buttocks as he had the creamiest, perfect skin she had ever seen. Fox ears that resembled InuYasha's adorned his scalp and poked through his glossy platinum mane. The scar though warned her of his previous battles and his experience.

It ran through his left eye, purple and jagged. Bringing in shaky breaths, she watched the ruthless youkai bring up his claw and smirk the most chilling, dangerous expression she had ever have the displeasure to see.

“Die.” He only murmured before disappearing in a white, silver blur.

Shaking, she yelped as she felt claws barely miss her back. Her eyes widening, Kagome rolled away from the now visible kitsune. Her mouth trembling, her eyes wide, she gulped. He really wanted to kill her!

Raising her bow, she let loose the arrow and watched horrified as he dodged it with such an ease it made her shot look pitiful. Turning and deciding to run for her life, she `eeped' as he appeared before her.

Standing regally in front of the shocked girl, he glared down at her. “Give me the shikon kakera, ningen, and I will spare your life.” He demanded coolly.

Her brow furrowing, Kagome panted from her run. Her eyes locked with his narrowed, golden ones, she shook her head. “Iie! I will not give it too you, youkai.” She could only whisper as the fear and anxiety consumed her as she watched his stoic, murderous face become annoyed.

“Then you will give it to me in pieces!” He yelled before swiping his claws at her. Kagome fell back and screamed as she felt the ground meet her back. Or was it the other way around? Her eyes largening as the claws came towards her face; she shut her eyes and began to pray to the Kami's.
