Chapter 4
Normal POV
Yusuke awoke the next morning to the morning sun shining in his eyes. He sat up and yawned as he stretched.
“Morning already?” Yusuke said in a low voice.
He was planning to lay back down when memories of the previous day came flooding back to him. Letting out an aggravated sigh he climbed out of bed. Grabbing his green jacket he walked out of his room and headed for the living room. When he got there Genkai was already awake and talking to Botan. Kuwabara was also there but he seemed like he was only listening.
“It's about time Yusuke. I was just about to go in there and wake you up myself,” Botan said.
“Yeah, yeah. Whatever. What time is it?” Yusuke asked.
“Eight,” Kuwabara said.
“Man. No wonder I'm still tired. I could use at least another hour or two.”
“To bad slacker. You're not going back to sleep. Once Kurama gets here we'll be discussing what we should do,” Genkai said before taking a sip of her tea.
Knowing that this wasn't the time to complain Yusuke decided to just join them and wait. About a half-hour passed before Kurama arrived. He looked troubled.
“What's wrong Kurama?” Botan asked.
“I attempted to find Hiei before coming here but he was nowhere to be found. If I had continued my search I fear that it would have taken up too much time. We'll just have to inform him later.”
“Now that you're here let's get down to business,” Genkai said.
Feudal Era
“Ok guys. I'm going to head back to my time now. I'll be back in a couple of days,” Kagome said, waving to her friends as she walked towards the well.
“Bye Kagome,” Shippo shouted from Miroku's shoulder.
“Return soon Lady Kagome,” Miroku said.
“See you soon Kagome,” Sango said.
All that was left was Inuyasha. He stood in front of the Bone Eaters Well, waiting for Kagome. When she approached him they stared at each other.
Crossing his arms Inuyasha said, “Just remember Kagome. If you're not back in three days I'm going to drag you back.”
Kagome just rolled her eyes at him. He always said the same thing to her when she left. The only thing that would be different would be the number of days. Saying goodbye to him she jumped down the well.
Present Time
When she arrived to her time she climbed up the ladder and walked out of the shed. Today she would be able to relax since it was already the middle of the day it would be pointless to go to school. She headed for her house. Once inside she found out that no one was home, so she went up to her room, dropped her bag, and dropped onto her bed. When Kagome awoke a few hours later it was a little past two in the afternoon. She looked around her home and no one was back yet so she went to take a shower.
After she was done she put on some clean clothes and dropped down onto the couch. Bored she turned on the TV and started to flip through the channels. Before long she turned it off and just sat there, staring at the wall.
“I think I'll go and wander around,” Kagome said as she got up and headed for the door.
City
Kagome wandered around aimlessly, trying to find something to do. She was planning on studying while she had the chance but decided to go out since it had been a while. As she walked around she spotted a group of people huddled around something with an ambulance truck there as well. Curiosity getting the best of her she walked over to see what it was. She gently pushed her way through, saying “excuse me” and “pardon me”. When she reached the front she saw a woman lying on the ground unconscious. Kagome gasped as she took note in the woman's skin. It was slightly purple, like it was infected by a powerful toxin.
`Wha… what could have done that?!' Kagome shouted in her mind.
Turning to the person on her right Kagome asked, “What happened here?”
“Don't know. She just collapsed,” the man said.
Nodding, Kagome looked back as the medics placed the woman on the stretcher and in the ambulance truck. When they drove off the group of people started to slowly disperse. Standing there still, Kagome looked back to where the woman used to be.
`What could have done this? Maybe she… no, that wouldn't explain why her skin changed color.'
Kagome continued to think it over when she was brought back out of her thoughts by a car horn.
“Hurry up and move! Ya stupid girl!” the driver yelled.
“Oh. Gomen, gomen,” Kagome said as she hurried out of the way.
She walked down the sidewalk and started to think about the incident again. Time and again she would bump into someone and would quickly apologize. Finally she stepped into a WacDonald's to get away from the crowds of people and to get something to eat. Once inside she paid for her food and sat down at a table next to the window. She had gotten two regular hamburgers, a medium fry, and a coke.
Kagome let out a sigh as she unwrapped her hamburger and started eating. Here she was able to think things over without getting in peoples way.
`Ok. Now that I can think more clearly, I wonder what happened to the woman? Something definitely isn't right. Maybe I should just forget about this and go back home?'
Kagome finished her food and left. She decided to walk through the park on her way home. When she reached the park she let a smile cross her face. She watched as mothers and fathers played with their children. She was going to sit down and watch everyone when she felt an incredible power. Kagome froze where she was, partly from surprise and partly in fear.
`That feels like the sacred jewel! But I have the shards here with me, why do I sense them elsewhere and why do they feel so powerful?!'
Kagome began to sweat in fear and started to run in the direction that she felt it coming from. She cut through the park, not wanting to waste time. When she reached the road again she was back to where she had seen the unconscious woman. She pushed past people, apologizing along the way, as she continued to run. Finally having to stop for a breather she leaned on her knees and tried to catch her breath.
As she stood at the corner she saw three boys on the other side of the street chasing something. She didn't see anything and was confused.
“What are they running after?” Kagome asked to no one in general.
Finally just for the hell of it she looked up and saw what they were chasing. Up in the air was a Saimyosho. Kagome stared in shock, unable to believe what she saw.
`But… but that's Naraku's insect! How is that here and why doesn't anybody else see it, other than those boys?! Wait a minute! Why are they chasing it?' Kagome shouted in her mind.
Watching them she saw them turn and run down the street after Naraku's insect. Kagome looked from them to where she sensed the jewel, and then back to them. Deciding that it would be better to check out what was going on with the bug, since she couldn't sense it, she ran off after them. As she was running she noticed the Saimyosho was carrying something. It looked like a red ribbon.
`Is that thing luring them?' Kagome asked herself.
As they were running she saw the boy with red hair glance over his shoulder. It seemed like he noticed her somehow. Forgetting about that she saw the Saimyosho turn in to an alley and the boys ran in after it. Kagome slowed to a walk as she came up to it and slowly peeked around. When she looked down the alley it seemed like what they had been chasing had disappeared.
`It must have flown over the wall,' Kagome thought.
Kagome stayed where she was as one of the boys started to talk.
In The Alley
“Damn it! It got away,” Yusuke said.
“Are you sure Urameshi? Maybe you just don't see it or something. It could still be around here somewhere,” Kuwabara asked.
“Yeah I'm sure. The damn thing disappeared. It probably flew over this stupid wall.”
“I think it would be best if we discuss this somewhere a little more private. It seems we're not alone,” Kurama said.
The other two looked at him and then to where he was looking. They saw a girl peeking around the corner. Just as quickly as they saw her she was gone.
“Crap. What do you think she heard?” Yusuke asked.
“Nothing to be concerned about, she couldn't have heard anything really,” Kurama said.
They all turned to go when they were stopped by an unexpected guest. Hiei had landed in front off Yusuke.
“AHH! Damn it Hiei! Don't do that. You scared the crap out of me,” Yusuke shouted.
Hiei said nothing; he just stood there and glared at him. Yusuke began to become a little nervous under his intense glare, but he of course didn't show it.
“Hey shrimp. What are you doing here?” Kuwabara asked.
Instead of answering the question with words Hiei pulled his fist back and punched Yusuke across the face, sending him back into the brick wall. Kuwabara took a step back in surprise and Kurama yelled at Hiei. Picking himself up off the ground, Yusuke brushed his left hand across his mouth and wiped the trickle of blood away.
“What the hell was that for!?” Yusuke shouted.
“You know what fool. It's your fault that Yukina has been kidnapped,” Hiei said.
Yusuke remained silent, not sure what to say. He knew he should have saved her but there wasn't anything that he could have done, especially after finding out who the demon was.
“Yeah, well where the hell were you? Maybe she wouldn't have been kidnapped if you were there to help. So don't blame this all on me. You should have been there,” Yusuke said.
Before Hiei could attack Yusuke again Kurama stepped in-between the two. He held out both of his arms to put some distance between them.
“Hiei. Yusuke. This isn't the time or place for this. We need to get out of here and finish this later.”
“Hn. This is a waste of my time,” Hiei said before he jumped back up to the rooftops and disappeared.
They all eased up and let out a sigh of relief after Hiei left. Yusuke and Kurama had expected it to be worse than it had been. Kuwabara looked back to Yusuke and Kurama with a dumbfounded expression.
“What was that about? I know shorty has his issues but why he does he seem to care so much? I'm not saying he's completely heartless but it just seems weird,” Kuwabara said.
“Forget about it Kuwabara. Hiei just must be in a bad mood,” Yusuke said, walking past him, with Kurama right behind him.
As they walked back towards the opening the girl jumped out in front of them. They stopped and looked at her with blank faces. She looked back at them with an expression between confusion and fear.
`Ok this could be the worst thing that I could have done. How do I know if they won't attack me? It's obvious they know of demons. I mean. How else could they have been chasing the Saimyosho without being afraid of it, plus that guy jumped down from the rooftop, punched the guy in green, and then jumped back up. No human can do that,' Kagome thought to herself.
“Ok. I have a few questions that I need answered. Question number one, how come you guys were able to see that Saimyosho?” Kagome asked.
Yusuke and the others stared at her blankly. None of them knew what to say. Aside from the girl following them, she had seen what they were chasing after and knew what it was called. Yusuke pointed his index finger at her and said, “Hold on a second. How come you were able to see it?”
Kagome's expression went from its previous one to a dumbfounded one.
“What?”
“Yes. I believe if you can tell us than we shall tell you,” Kurama said.
“Well I ah…” Kagome struggled for the right words, but none came to her.
Finally thinking she had something she said, “I just can. Now you tell me,” she said with a sweat drop on the back of her head.
Yusuke and the others also had a sweat drop running down the back of their heads. Kurama shook his head, trying not to believe that was what she had come up with. Kuwabara and Yusuke let out a sigh in embarrassment; it was usually one of them that said something stupid.
“I'm sorry but that won't do. Now please move?” Kurama asked politely.
“No. I need to know. I can't tell you if I don't know that I can trust you.”
Yusuke, Kurama, and Kuwabara looked at each other. They grouped together and whispered to each other. Kagome watched and hoped that they would tell her. Finally they came to an agreement.
“All right, but we're not going to discuss it here. Look up the address of a temple that belongs to an old woman called Genkai. We'll be waiting there. But you have to show up there later. We would take you there with us but we have something to take care of first,” Yusuke said.
Kagome took a moment before she agreed. They said goodbye and walked around her. She watched as they ran off in a different direction that they had come from. Not wanting to waste time Kagome ran back to her home.
`I need to get Inuyasha!'
Feudal Era
Kagome climbed up out of the wall and ran towards Kaeda's village. When she reached it she saw everyone going about their daily chores. Villagers watched as she ran by them, some greeting her. As she approached Kaeda's hut she saw Inuyasha stepping out.
“What are you doing back so soon?”
“Inuyasha! Something really important has come up!”
