“Ok so let's try to figure this out. We can't send just anybody to each location. So let's start by seeing who has to go where,” Koenma said.
“It's obvious that I'll go for the book. Besides using my Jagon will make finding it easier,” Hiei said.
“Alright. So how about you Kurama? Are you going to go for the book as well?” Koenma asked.
“Sorry. As much as I want to I feel that I will be needed here. I think I'll head for the watch.”
“Same here. I'd love to kick some demon ass but I think I'll stick with Kurama,” Yusuke said.
Koenma let out a small sigh. He was partly happy with their choices so far, but he felt uneasy leaving one item in Hiei's hands alone. With how he's been lately who knows if he might destroy the book by accident.
“Um… I think I will go for the watch too,” Kagome said.
The YYH gang, minus Hiei, and Inuyasha all looked at her with an expression that asked the question for them. She looked at their puzzled faces.
“What? It wouldn't be right to leave something like this to you guys when you're doing it partly for us.”
“Are you sure? I'm sure they can handle this on their own. They've came out of much worse situations before,” Botan said.
“Yes I am. And Inuyasha, you're going to help too.”
“What!?” he yelled, bewildered.
“I said you're helping too. I mean they are helping us in a way. So it would only be right.”
“Fine! But I'm going with you.”
“No. You're going to go with their friend. I'm sure he could use some help.”
The two then proceeded into an argument. Everyone just sat there and watched. They weren't sure if they should interfere or not. It then ended with a simple word that surprised them all.
“SIT!” Kagome yelled.
“Oh sh…!” Inuyasha strained to get out before the rosary beads around his neck slammed his face on to the floor.
Yusuke remembered seeing this yesterday. This time he laughed at it since now he wasn't distracted. Kuwabara wasn't sure what just happened but still laughed. Inuyasha was a little shaky getting up. It was clear that he was angry.
“Hn. Don't bother sending that mutt with me. He'll just make this mission more difficult,” Hiei said.
Inuyasha's ears twitched in annoyance.
“What did you say shorty!? Just for that I've decided that I will go,” Inuyasha said.
“Hey! You guys ain't keeping me out of this. I'm going for that book too!” Kuwabara shouted while standing up.
“Kuwabara are you nuts? You'll just end up getting killed,” said Yusuke.
“My decision is final Urameshi. And you or anybody else better not try and stop me.”
Knowing what Kuwabara was saying Yusuke left it at that. No one truly liked Kuwabara's decision but knew that it needed to be done. With the teams set Koenma got them ready.
“Ok. Now, assuming that you can all start immediately, I will tell you all the directions to the artifacts locations. I'm sure that once you all reach your destinations you can find them,” Koenma said.
No one objected so he reached inside his shirt and pulled out two pieces of folded up papers. He handed one to Kurama and the other to Hiei.
“On these pieces of paper are directions to the artifacts. Now the one here in the Human World is just outside the city. It's hidden in a secret temple. As for the one in Demon World, it's not exactly hidden, but it is going to be more dangerous to get than the watch. It's in a very old castle, one that's been around for thousands of years. There's no telling what could be lurking around in there or how well the structure is holding up.”
Suddenly Kuwabara wasn't so sure about his decision. Sweat slowly dripped down the side of his face. Hiei took note of this and made a sound, one that no one could tell what it meant. So he explained.
“If you're now having second thoughts then you better make up your mind now. I will not put my life on the line just because you can't defend yourself.”
“What! Yeah right. If anyone is going to be doing the saving it'll be me!” Kuwabara yelled.
“Hn. Do you honestly believe that you can save anyone in your present state? You're more useless to us than Koenma.”
“Hey…” Koenma mumbled.
Kuwabara grinded his teeth and glared at Hiei. Hiei glared back at him, only with a darker glare. The others in the room could feel the tension between the two. They even thought they saw bits of lighting crackle between their line of vision.
Yusuke stared with a nervous smile and laughed.
`Oh crap. Those two are going to kill each other before we even get started.'
“That's enough you two! Honestly! You two need to learn how to get along better,” Botan said.
Kuwabara reluctantly looked away without saying anything.
“Thank you Botan. Now, are all of you able to start right away?” Koenma asked.
He got a nod from everyone.
“Alright than. Yusuke, Kurama, and Kagome. You three can head out now. Like I said, you three should be able to find it by following those directions. Hiei, Kuwabara, and Inuyasha, you all need to follow me. I need to open a hole in the barrier to allow you to pass over to the demon world,” Koenma said.
Koenma signaled for Hiei, Kuwabara, Inuyasha, and Botan to follow him. As they walked by he handed Kurama a communication mirror, like the one Yusuke had during his Maze Castle mission. When they walked out Kagome got up and ran after them. Yusuke and Kurama followed closely behind. When they reached the outside they saw Koenma, Botan, Hiei, Kuwabara, and Inuyasha, although he was hesitant, step into a portal.
“Are they going to be alright?” Kagome asked.
“I'm sure Hiei and your friend will be fine. But it's Kuwabara that I'm worried about. He may be determined but without his spirit energy he may as well be a sitting target,” Kurama said.
“Spirit energy?”
“Kurama can explain to you on the way. Come on. Let's hurry and get this over with,” Yusuke said as he walked past both of them.
Spirit World
Hiei, Kuwabara, and Inuyasha followed Koenma and Botan to his office. Inuyasha looked around in awe at what he saw, well that was until they reached the area where all the ogres worked. He just stared, baffled by what he saw. When they reached Koenma's office he saw two giant doors. At first he was curious at to how they were going to get inside when Koenma easily pushed them open.
They walked inside and the doors closed behind them on their own. Inuyasha still couldn't help but to look around, but his interest quickly died since there wasn't much to the room. All there was was a desk and chair towards the back. Koenma climbed up onto the top of his desk and turned to face them. He cleared his throat to make sure they were paying attention.
“Ok. Now that we are here we can begin.”
“It's about time,” Inuyasha said.
Botan smacked him in the back of the head to keep him quiet. He glared at her and was about to say something when Koenma continued.
“I will open the portal for you momentarily, but when I do understand that you can't come back until you complete your mission. Here. You can hold on to this Kuwabara,” Koenma said as he handed him the same device that he handed Kurama.
After Kuwabara pocketed it he turned towards the wall and held up his right hand. It began to glow and after a minute of gathering power he snapped his fingers and a portal stretched open.
“There you go. It won't stay open for long so I suggest you get going. It should place you within a few miles of the castle, but I can't insure you that for sure.”
Without hesitation Hiei walked in and Kuwabara quickly followed. Inuyasha walked up to it and inspected it first. His ears twitched as he looked it over. He squinted his eyes at it, like there was something wrong with it. Turning partly around he tried to say something, but he was pushed in by Botan. After hearing a string of curses as he fell in the portal closed, leaving behind a giggling Botan.
Human World
Outskirts of City
Yusuke, Kurama, and Kagome got off the bus. Kagome carried a large bag with her. Inside it was a bow and a quiver full of arrows that she got from Genkai. She slung it over her shoulder. They stood there and looked at the line of trees that were ahead of them as the bus drove away. Yusuke got a feeling of déjà vu. He leaned over and looked at the piece of paper that Koenma had given Kurama.
“So which way do we go?”
“It looks like we can move straight ahead. Going by this we'll have to make a couple of turns here and there afterwards. But we should be able to reach it within the hour,” Kurama said.
Yusuke let out a heavy sigh and led the way. Without a word Kagome followed them. She was thinking over what Kurama had explained to her about spirit energy.
An Hour Later
“Damn it Kurama! How much farther is it?” Yusuke asked, for the twentieth time.
With a sweat drop running down the side of his face Kurama tried to ignore him. He was expecting Yusuke to be complaining but for some reason it was really bothering him. At least he was able to have an intelligent conversation with Kagome. But Yusuke persisted so he answered.
“I don't know Yusuke. All it says it that it will be found in a slight clearing.”
Stuffing his hands in his pockets Yusuke moved on ahead of them. Kurama shook his head at how impatient Yusuke could be. He heard a slight giggle from Kagome and looked at her questionably. When she noticed he was staring she explained.
“For a moment there he reminded me of someone I know. Although Yusuke is bigger and I get the feeling more violent too.”
“Oh. Is it one of your friends that you were telling me about?” Kurama asked.
“Yes. I hope we can find these artifacts. I just know that they will be a big help with fighting Naraku.”
Kurama was going to ask more about her friends when Yusuke came running back to them.
“Hey guys. There's a clearing up ahead.”
`Is there anything there?” Kurama asked.
Yusuke shrugged his shoulders and signaled for them to follow. Kurama and Kagome ran after him and stopped when they reached the clearing. It was an open field; nothing filled it but flowers. Kurama looked back at the paper to see if there would be any clues but found none.
“So where do we go from here?” Kagome asked.
“I don't know. The directions end with it saying there will be a clearing. Maybe there's something here that will trigger something,” Kurama said, looking around the field.
Going by what Kurama said they all split up and searched the field for anything. But there efforts were for not. They found no clues and regrouped close to the middle of the field.
“Where the hell is this stupid temple?! Koenma better not have given us the wrong directions!” Yusuke shouted.
Kurama chose to ignore his friend's rant and tried to think of anything that could help them. Kagome didn't know what to do so she looked at the ground and kicked her foot. Continuing to try and think of something Kurama was distracted when he thought that he felt a rumble. He looked around and saw nothing and so he dismissed it. A few seconds later he felt it again and knew for sure this time that he felt something because Kagome was looking around too.
“Did you guys feel that?” Kagome asked.
“Feel what?” Yusuke asked annoyance obvious in his tone of voice.
The ground began to shake more and soon became more violent. Now Yusuke was aware of it as well as he had to brace his legs, along with Kurama and Kagome. Kagome had to hold onto Kurama to keep herself from falling though. She shouted out the question that was on all their minds but she received no answer. After a few more seconds of the shaking it suddenly stopped.
“What was that? Why did it suddenly stop?” Yusuke asked.
Before either Kurama or Kagome could guess the ground began shaking again, but only much more violent then before. Being caught off guard caused them all to fall to their knees. Kagome looked ahead and saw that the ground was beginning to break apart in the middle of the field. She pointed at it and Yusuke and Kurama saw it too. Soon when the ground broke apart enough something began to rise out of it. In their awe they saw the temple rising up. When the temple was completely out the shaking stopped.
They all slowly stood up and looked at each other. Smiling, they walked towards what looked like the front of the temple. Yusuke was the closest one to it and went for the steps but stopped when he hit a barrier. The barrier, alone with his surprise, caused him to bounce back and stumble. When he fell he rubbed the front of his face and asked, “What the hell did I hit?”
“There appears to be a barrier here. Now the real question is how do we get past it,” Kurama said.
`Maybe Inuyasha should have come with us. He would be able to get rid of the barrier with his red Tessaiga,' Kagome thought to herself.
Kurama inspected the barrier closely. He placed his hand on it and it was softly forced away. Putting a little more force behind his hand he tried again. This time the barrier pushed his hand away with more force then before.
`Hmm. The harder we try to get inside the more it repeals,' Kurama thought to himself.
Since trying to force themselves in would most likely end with them just wasting their time and energy Kurama tried to think of another way they could get in. Yusuke saw what Kurama had experimented on and thought that he would give it a try himself; only he put much more power behind his fist. The result… Yusuke was launched away with great force. He hit the ground hard and slid to a stop. Kurama had to look away in embarrassment at his friends' stupidity as Kagome ran over to make sure he was all right.
As Kagome expected Yusuke, Kurama felt a presence approaching them. He took a few steps away from the temple and looked to see if he could see anything coming. Unfortunately he could not. Yusuke saw Kurama whipping his head back and forth like he was searching for something. He was going to call out to Kurama when he felt it as well. Jumping to his feet he raised his fists, ready for anything that could jump out. Kagome looked at them and was confused.
“What are you guys doing?”
“Something's coming,” Yusuke bluntly said.
Kagome slid the bag off her shoulder and opened it. She pulled out the bow and slid the quiver over her shoulder. Pulling an arrow out she stood ready for anything. They felt the ground shake again and knew why they couldn't see it coming. Kurama suddenly felt the ground bulge underneath his feet.
“Kurama! It's under you!” Yusuke shouted.
Gracefully jumping away in time, the ground erupted. Kurama landed in front of Yusuke and Kagome. They stood and waited for the dust to clear. There stood an odd creature. It was big and had large muscles but at the same time it didn't look threatening. Its body, aside from its size, almost looked human. The body was a light blue color and it wore a cloth around its waist.
“Those that come to challenge temple must challenge me first. Come. Who dears to challenge my strength?” it said.
They stared at it questionably. Yusuke shrugged his shoulders and walked up towards it. Kagome tried to stop him but Kurama stopped her and told her not to worry. When Yusuke stood in front of it he smirked up at it and said, “Heh. I'll fight you.”
The creature towered over Yusuke by at least three feet. He remained unfazed by it and cracked his knuckles, ready to fight. After hearing he would fight him it attacked without warning. Yusuke slightly panicked, surprised to see how fast something its size could move. Reacting in time he rolled to his left as its fist collided with the ground. The force of its attack caused pieces of the ground to erupt and fly everywhere.
Yusuke stopped on his knees and looked at the damage the creature had caused.
`Damn. Better not get hit by it.'
He had little time to think it over, as it was ready to attack him again. This time he jumped back to avoid it. It chased him down and tried to hit him over and over with either its hands or feet. Yusuke would either duck or jump to the side, some times a combination of both.
The creature got in close and punched straight for Yusuke's head. This time Yusuke ducked it and when the opportunity presented itself he leapt up and delivered a uppercut, smirking while he did so. But his joy was cut short. His attack barely fazed it and it quickly recovered. It grabbed both of his legs with one of its giant hands and slammed him into the ground.
Yusuke cursed to himself as he lied in the crater his body made. Before he could try and climb out he was crushed by one of its giant feet. Hearing Yusuke cry out in pain Kurama called for him and Kagome gasped in horror. More dust filled the crater.
“Such a weak thing,” the creature said as it lifted its foot.
It lowered its left hand to pick up Yusuke but was stopped by Kurama's whip wrapping around its arm. The thorns dug deep into its skin but drew no blood. Using its other hand it grabbed onto the whip. It snapped it and pulled Kurama in and flung him using his own weapon. Kurama still managed to land safely but had to roll to a stop. It turned back to reach for Yusuke when in the corner of its eye it saw Kagome shoot an arrow. It was going to ignore it but saw that it was covered in energy. Moving quickly it dodged it. Then it picked up a large piece of ruble from the ground and threw it at her. She barely avoided it.
“Stay out of this. Fight is between me and small one.”
Returning to the still dust-covered crater it decided that it would stump on him again instead. Kurama tried to run over to stop it but couldn't reach it in time. But he noticed something different. The large creature was struggling to keep its balance. That's when he noticed Yusuke's spirit energy building up. Now he could see waves of blue energy leaking through what was left of the dust. When it was completely cleared he could see Yusuke struggling himself to hold up the things foot. Kagome stared in awe at Yusuke's strength.
With one final push Yusuke managed to make the creature stumble back. He quickly got up and jumped up into the air towards the creature. Channeling his spirit energy into both of his fist he punched the creature over and over in a crazy frenzy in the face. It was unable to defend itself from Yusuke's barrage of attacks and continued to stumble back. For a final punch Yusuke gathered all his spirit energy that he was using for both fists and channeled it all into his right fist. His final punch caused the creature to fly back through the air, towards the temple. As Yusuke was still in the air he gathered his spirit energy and prepared for his Spirit Gun.
“And here's the finisher! Spirit Gun!” Yusuke yelled.
A giant ball of energy blasted from his fingertip and blew him back from the force of its exit. The blast collided with the creature as it was still flying towards the temple. It exploded violently in a huge explosion. Its body emerged from the smoke, but only now it went towards the barrier with more force than before. It collided with the barrier hard and forced away much more violently than when Yusuke was.
He creature hit the ground and slid through it back towards Yusuke about halfway. Yusuke, along with Kurama and Kagome, walked over to it to see if it was dead. They all tensed up when they saw it strain to left its body.
“How the hell are you still alive!? There's no way you can be after that!” Yusuke shouted.
When it was up it sat down with its legs crossed. Even when sitting it was still there height. It leaned forward and struggled to hold itself up.
“Do not worry little one. You have won. You may pass.”
After it said that they could see the barrier become slightly visible before it broke apart in a sparkle of lights. They looked at the creature confused.
“Why did the barrier just disappear? Does it have something to do with that fight just now?” Kagome asked.
The creature nodded.
“Yes. I am the first trail the visitors must pass if they wish to enter the temple. Only by defeating me in battle can you pass.”
“Wait a second. There are trails we have to go through?” Yusuke asked.
“Yes. The first was to show your strength. If you could defeat me in battle than you are worthy to move on. But if you were on able to beat me than I, along with the temple, would have disappeared until the next challenger arrived.”
“How did you know that we were looking for the temple?” Kurama asked.
“When the one that beat me raised his spirit energy it called us.”
Yusuke laughed and scratched the back of his head.
“What do ya know. My short temper actually came in handy,” Yusuke said, grinning to himself.
“So if the first trail was to beat you what are the others and how many are there?” Kagome asked.
“I can not answer. You must find out for yourselves. Now go,” it said as its body disappeared.
Without hesitation they headed for the steps that led up to the entrance, ready for anything else that they were to face.
