CHAPTER 5

The girl-child was once again hiding her face in her mother's skirts.
Oh Kami, not now.
"What are you doing in my house? Who are you people?"
I cant afford to remember this right now!
The mother took as step back as the three burly men came at her with swords drawn.
Why cant I control these?
"We are here for that monster hiding behind you. Just step away."
Stop.

"Monster? Get away! You cant have my baby! Kagome Run!"
Stop!
Kagome watched, horrified, as they killed her mother slowly for disobeying them.

STOP!

Kagome shuddered violently as the image of the murder played over and over again in her mind. She closed her eyes tightly, and fell to her knees with a strangled sob. Kagome brought her hands up to cover her face and the tears that threatened to spill over.
Oh Kami, why cant I forget? I try so hard to forget.
Her thoughts stopped when she sensed a hand coming to rest on her shoulder. Kagome snarled and twisted out of the way. She rolled to her feet and turned to face the startled boys.
Yuske's mouth was moving but no sound was coming out. Kurama's hand was still outstretched, his face showing none of the surprise evident in his stance. Kagome scowled and clenched her fists.
"Eat shit and die. I don't give my number to enemies."
Even if they are friends with my sex god, and giving it to him will give it to my sex god at the same time…No! stop thinking like that, they are bad people, just turn and leave. Turn and leave. Leave damnit!
Kagome turned on her heel and stalked in the general direction of home. Yuske, being the first to recover, ran after her. Kurama was having a tougher time getting over the brush off. No one had ever said no to him, let alone tell him to…to `eat shit and die' and why did she call him an enemy? What had Yuske done in the short period of time he had been alone with her. Kurama shook his head and trotted after Yuske. No beautiful kitsune was going to slip though his fingers because Yuske said something stupid.
`That's the perfect way of thinking.'
Shut up Youko.
`Now now, there is no reason for you to talk to me like that.'
You got me slapped on our last date!
`But it was such a short skirt! How could I resist?'
Shut up Youko, I'm not talking to you.

`Your no fun'
Kurama's face twisted into a scowl before settling back into its normal cool impassiveness. Yuske had caught up with the kitsune, but she looked ready to attack. She was widening her stance for better balance when he jogged up.
"What seems to be the problem here Yuske?"
Yuske frowned and tried to grab onto her, only to have her skillfully evade his every attempt at contact.
"She is a kitsune."
Kurama nodded solemnly.
"Yes she is."
Yuske glared at him.
"You knew all day?!"
His voice held a note of accusation. Kurama held up his hands on reflex.
"Calm down Yuske, I only found out when she ran into me."

Yuske snorted. He turned to look at Kurama, then jumped with lightning speed at Kagome. Her eyes widened a bit, then she tried to dodge. She managed to not get body slammed, but Yuske did get a good hold on her arm. Kagome snarled and kneed him in the stomach.
"Keep your hands off of me!"
She punctuated each word with a kick…most of which were dodged. Yuske finally let go when she delivered a bone-crushing kick to the back of his head. Yuske fell unconscious and Kurama stared at her, stunned.
Kagome snorted and walked away again.

`Stop her!'
What? And get our asses kicked like Yuske, ya right.

`She wont do that to us, we're to good for that kind of treatment.'
Kurama sighed and muttered Youko's name in exasperation. Kagome stopped and went rigid.

"What did you say?"
Kurama raised an eyebrow.

"Eh?"
"You said `Youko'. How do you know him? Tell me where he is!"
Kurama took a step back, the intensity of her glare made him nervous.

"How is it you know Youko?"
Kagome's eyes narrowed.
Why not tell him, it'll get me a sympathy vote.
"He killed my family."
