Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction / InuYasha Fan Fiction ❯ It's all in the Mind ❯ Overload ( Chapter 2 )
Hello again! Third part is here, already, this has to be the quickest story I have written so far, update wise. Lol, but surprisingly for such a new story it has gotten very good reviews and a lot of hits on mm.org, over 300 lol, so here it is, chapter two.
(p.s with Tenseiga I will be going with one of my friends theories that it only heals wounds, doesn't give them back their natural energy.)
Disclaimer: I do not own Inuyasha or the Yu Yu Hakusho series, I do however own any un-recognised characters, places or plots.

~Its all in the Mind~
Chapter Two
There was darkness everywhere she looked, her head hurt like it had been hit with a baseball bat, wielded by a demon or two. Was that a bad thing?
Most likely, it was, that much pain was not good. But she couldn't really feel it, if that made any sense at all it was like she was disconnected from it all. Oh she knew it was there alright, but couldn't really feel it.
Urgh this was sure to make her head hurt even more, all this thinking.
But why was she thinking? Was she awake but blind? Well and deaf too by the lack of sounds. She didn't believe that for a moment.
But, where was she then? She couldn't feel her body, it didn't even feel like she had any body at all, yet she felt like she was moving her eyes.
But she didn't feel like she had any eyes.
This was too strange, she should have a body, she should... or wait, should she? What had happened, was she dead and in limbo? Or had something else happened?
She felt…stuck almost, wherever she was, well whatever she was. Yes, that was right, what was she, she didn't feel like herself, she felt, new…but old? It was so strange, she felt like she had the weight for the world on her shoulders yet someone else was carrying it.
She felt her non existent mouth sigh as she waited, for what she had no clue, but she couldn't really do anything else.
It wasn't very long until she felt a light tugging on her senses, it was like a pull all around her as if being wrapped in a blanket and dragged somewhere, but this was less painful.
She frowned, as best she could, as the tugging became more insistent, what was it, what did they want!
…They? Where had that come from, who was she talking about.
She knew she was forgetting something, it was there hovering just above her as if she had to grab it to find out what she was forgetting
There…she went silent, she could hear something, something very distant who, what?
"Kagome, Kagome, please wake up, the Inu-kuro is worried! Come on, wake up and sit him okay? He's annoying everyone….."
"Okaasan?! Onegai, Okaasan, please wake up! Please…I miss you…"
Who, what…Okaasan!
She couldn't remember, and what did they mean wake up, she was awake! She could hear them, Kami why couldn't she move!
"Kouga, keep the kit away from her"
There, she could hear them again.
"Look, Sesshoumaru, my woman is hurt, along with over HALF my tribe and I can do nothing, the least I can do is keep Kagome's kit by her side…even if she doesn't know"
"Take the kit away from the Miko" She could hear the voice hiss to this…Kouga, what was going on?
She faintly heard a scuffle as the sounds around her got weaker, oh no! No not now! She was so close to remembering!
"You may not realise this Ookami, but she is dieing, her soul is slipping away from her, if you want this Miko to live I suggest you move aside" Dieing?
She couldn't be? Could she?
What was he talking about? Dieing? He was mad, how could she be dieing, she couldn't remember doing anything that could lead to death. But, she couldn't remember anything.
She felt herself shiver slightly at that recurring thought, what had she done to loose her memory and fall close to deaths grip.
Everything was slowly slipping away from her, she didn't want to die, she wanted to find out what she had forgotten, she couldn't die now!
And as she thought that she felt a strange sensation within her, of a sorts, it was like a pulse, deep inside her, somehow she could feel it, even though she could not feel her body.
She went perfectly still within her thoughts as she heard the first whispers, but…not the ones before, not the Kouga and Sesshoumaru? It was, something else…something she knew was important, what was it!
….live…we need you…the jewel, we need you…live...now is not your time, awaken…we will protect you until it is time…and so will those around you…live…
Then there was silence, and one…two…three…four seconds passed before everything rushed back into her mind in a frenzy of memories…
Inuyasha…..
Keade…
The arrows….
Sango…
Miroku…
Shippou, her kit…
The thunder brothers…
The pain…
The betrayal…
Naraku…
Oh Kami! She felt a deep slice form and disappear on her chest as air was pushed violently down her lungs! The jewel?!
The Fight!!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Flashback ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
She barely had enough time to lift her feet above the ground and over the dark brown tentacle as it swept at her. She dropped back down to the ground and swung her sword as she spun, her Miko energy running up from her through the hilt to cover the blade as she brought it down on the tentacle as it did a back sweep towards her.
It struck true as she heard him snarl again.
She had forgotten how long she and Naraku had been fighting, one of her hands was slowly becoming numb as she swung her sword with the other.
She had been since nearly the beginning of the battle edging her way closer and closer, dodging tentacles and other attacks as she destroyed him bit by bit with her energy.
But at a cost.
Exhaustion was slowing her down and she was loosing too much blood, and her energy was low, so low in fact that she felt almost empty, like the centre of her was nothing but an empty box.
Her hair was tangled and matted with blood as she ducked and rolled, wincing as she felt a tentacle slice her side with it's tip.
She would loose if something didn't happen soon.
She was too weak, too slow and too tired… and Naraku?
He was wounded yes, but only by her, she was the first one he attacked and as such, was a lot better off then her and it was clear to him.
He would grin whenever she looked his way, his eyes gleaming in delight as he tore at her again, snarling only when her blows struck true.
She needed help, and Kami help her.
She didn't think she would get it in time.

Her eyes blinked open and blue eyes looked up at the form standing above her, sword being slid back into its sheath. She moved her head to the side as she looked around, blinking slightly in the confusion surrounding her and the sunlight shining above her.
What? Where was she now?
She frowned and with a small groan in the back of her throat she forced herself onto her elbows, lifting up her upper torso.
Kami, what a headache. Kagome scrunched her eyes together tightly, trying to get rid of the headache pounding at her temple.
"Miko, are you not well?" Opening her eyes with a jerk as the cold voice penetrated her thoughts she looked up again to see Sesshoumaru still standing above her. He stood there watching her with an almost puzzled expression.
"Just a headache" She mumbled it under her breathe as she managed to push herself up into a proper sitting position.
Sesshoumaru nodded lightly at her reply as his golden eyes gave her a once over to make sure, before nodding again.
"I am glad you kept your promise Miko"
"'KAASAN!!" Before either of them could say anymore, a brown and red ball of fur came charging down the slope, zooming around the chaos of the injured and numerous healing tents that had been set up.
She stopped for a second, healing tents? Then…did that mean?
"oompf!" She flew back down onto her back hitting the ground quite hard as Shippou jumped onto her chest and nuzzled her neck in affection.
"'kaasan, 'kaasan, I was so worried. You wouldn't wake up and you were so cold," She frowned slightly as she felt him start to sob gently against her, small tears running down her neck "Don't leave me 'kaasan, you promised you would never leave me."
He kept on sobbing, the stress and fear of the last few weeks finally becoming too much for the young Kit as he held his okaasan.
Worried blue eyes locked onto the mop of chestnut coloured hair as she felt him sob, she sighed and stroked, crooning softly even as she flinched against the bruising pain on her back.
"There, there, it's all right Shippou, see?" She smiled down at him encouragingly "I'm all better"
"B-but you weren't when we g-got to you, and the o-others…" She frowned.
"Shippou, want do you mean?"
Silence reigned around them at her question, without even moving Sesshoumaru's presence became stronger and more stifling as the air around them seemed to grow cooler.
"Kit, go speak with the healer, find out how many injured there are"…Shippou looked up at the intimidating Lord of the Western Lands and the shook his head nuzzling back into Kagome's neck.
A soft growl penetrated the air around them.
"Kit…" She winced at that one word, and decided it would most likely be safer if Shippou wasn't around.
"Shippou, go on, it's not as if I will be gone when you get back" She smiled at him reassuringly before lightly nudging him away from the pair.
He left reluctantly.
She sighed and slowly stood up with the help of Sesshoumaru.
She couldn't help but wonder at a good many things, one was what the hell was going on, when had the battle ended? And what had Shippou meant, about the others, she knew he wasn't talking about Sango.
She felt a lance of pain run through her chest at the name of her friend but managed to push it away to deal with later, something else much worse was going on, and she wanted to know.
"Be straight with me Sesshoumaru, I respect you for that, what happened?"
She could almost feel the dead weight in her chest, please Kami, please let the rest of her friends be safe.
She wouldn't be able to handle it if they weren't; it would have been all her fault.
"Miko, I will be direct but not now, you still need to rest"
He said no more and started to lead her towards the larger and more extravagant healing tent near the edge of the camp, which if she did say so was in an area she had never seen before, although by a forest which should have been normal, it was one she had never seen before, and definitely away from the battle field, she could see no evidence of a battle nearby. She shrugged and followed Sesshoumaru inside where she heard him give a short fluid bark to an Inu-youkai soldier who immediately left the tent.
Looking up at the Lord curiously Kagome shrugged, still trying to get rid of the dead weight in her chest, there was something he wasn't telling her. Something she knew she wouldn't like.
She shook her head at her morbid thoughts, not now! Later, yes later she would deal with all this mess, right now, she knew that if she didn't get some rest and get rid of the pounding in her temple she would not be able to deal with anything.
She was almost swaying on her feet in exhaustion anyway.
Scrunching her eyes together against the pounding in her head she shook her head and opened her eyes, hoping to distract herself by looking around.
The tent she was in was quite full, with what looked like the higher status humans and demons being treated. The floor was splattered with blood here and there and a pile of dirty bandages lay in the corner surrounded by sweet smelling flowers and herbs to protect the sensitive noses of the demons.
She almost smiled when she saw that but stopped when she saw a particular item lying in another corner of the tent, alone.
"Totosai…" Her voice was just a whisper as she looked at the long handled hammer that the eccentric man had carried around with him. He was still there? Now that Naraku was gone she thought he would have left, Naraku would no longer be after him.
She looked around almost expecting to see him somewhere sleeping or just being lazy.
No sign of him.
"Sesshoumaru, where is Totosai?"
She looked up at him as she spoke, his normal emotionless expression never wavering as he looked her in the eyes. She shuffled on her feet nervously as she felt his eyes pierce into her soul almost, why was he looking at her like that?
"Did I hear you say Totosai? Kagome-Sama?" Her eyes widened and broke their contact with Sesshoumaru's as she turned around to see a tired and dirty Miroku standing at the entrance of the doorway.
She avoided looking him in the eyes as she felt the grief almost pouring off of him…Sango.
Would he blame her?
…he should do.
"Miroku-Kun! Are you alright?" Acting like her usual concerned self she ran up to him as she fast as she could with her lack of energy, and still avoiding his eyes she gave him a one armed hug around the shoulders, too happy to care about etiquette.
She pulled back from her hug with him but was stopped by the firm hand placed on her upper arm. Looking up startled, she looked into deeply sad almost purple coloured eyes. He leant in towards her ear and whispered, just for her ears.
"No one blames you Kagome-Sama, least of all myself"
He pulled back and smiled wearily before going back to the topic at hand.
"So Kagome-Sama, did I hear you ask for Totosai?" She smiled in relief as they went back to a safe topic of conversation and nodded in answer.
There was silence between the three as she nodded, and again she felt that dead weight of not knowing and dread.
"Miroku-Kun?" She turned to look at Sesshoumaru who stood there watching her closely, as if waiting for a reaction.
Her face went pale as she began to put the pieces together, his hammer was over, alone in the corner with no Totosai in sight, when she asked where he was she got no answer…
"He's dead…" No question, just a simple statement and by the grave silence around her, she knew she was right. Oh Kami, no, onegai no.
She held back a sob.
No, he hadn't deserved that, no. He wasn't supposed to die, he hadn't even come for the final battle, he had come for protection god damnit! And now, he was dead.
She bit her lip as she held back a sob, he had only wanted to stay safe, he hadn't wanted to make the sword Naraku wanted.
It was like the time with Sesshoumaru, only this time the sword would have been pure evil, made worse by the jewel shard Naraku had wanted to be placed inside.
Totosai had known not to say yes to such a demand so he had run, once again to the group of travellers, and now, and now he was dead.
She clenched her eyes shut as she gave a heaving sob before being enveloped in a warm hug by Miroku.
Tears spilling form her eyes she rested against him, not caring about the others in the tent who were studiously looking away, not caring about looking like a weak ningen.
She didn't care, another person she has considered a friend was dead, oh Kami, why did it have to be him.
She heard a light crooning above her but didn't care, even as she felt the warm masculine hands soothingly stroke her hair, trying to give her a measure of comfort.
It was her fault, always was and always would be, Kami how could he comfort her now? She had gotten Sango killed, and now Totosai, and the hundreds from the armies that had come to defeat Naraku, all because of her.
If she hadn't broken the stupid jewel then, Naraku would never have gotten such power, he could have been defeated so much more easily if she hadn't interfered.
"Why, why did they have to die…"She sobbed against the monk's chest as she held her, calming her, helping her through her grief.
"It was just his time Kagome-Sama, just as it was L-Lady S-Sango's time, no one blames you, no one, I promise you that Kagome-Sama, I do"
She shook her head against his chest as she started to calm down, how could he not blame her?
What had she done to gain such respect, she didn't deserve it, not after all this. Inuyasha had always told her that she was never good at anything…
"Inuyasha!" She jerked away from Miroku so suddenly that he started, she saw Sesshoumaru raise an eyebrow very slightly at her out burst.
"I mean, does he know, a-about To-Totosai?" She rubbed the tears off of her cheeks as she sniffed again.
"Inuyasha, has not really been in the best of…best of conditions to talk to Kagome-Sama" Miroku looked away from her nervously as he spoke, he swallowed, his Adams apple bobbing gently.
Not in the best of conditions? What did he mean? Not another one, onegai not another of her friends, not Inuyasha, iie, it couldn't be.
"Is he...is he…?" She couldn't bring herself to finish her question as she choked back her tears. She felt so close to collapsing right that moment that she almost leant against Miroku again.
She felt a wave of relief rush through her tired body as she saw him shake his head in response to her question, thank Kami!
"Then where is he? What's the matter with him?" She looked at the two men standing near her, Sesshoumaru stayed silent but his eyes seemed to flash a darker, duller colour for a second before it vanished.
She frowned, what? What was it? Why were they hiding so much from her? She needed to know, she needed to. This was Inuyasha, one of her friends! She had the right to know!
"Miroku-Kun? Where is he? Tell me!" She bit her lip "I need to know, he's my friend Miroku-Kun, I need to know how he is" She kept her eyes locked with his as his seemed to go duller as well.
"Oh Kagome-Sama, don't you remember?" His words were but a whisper as he looked down at her smaller figure in sympathy.
Inuyasha? Remember what about him? What was going o…She gasped and slapped a hand over her mouth, oh no, oh please no.
…Tetsusaiga.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Flashback ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
She fell to the ground crying out in pain as she felt her raw back slam against the ground, her top soaking up the blood as she rolled onto her side in pain. A hacking cough shook her small frame as she tried to find the energy to push herself up instead of just rolling this way and that to escape Naraku's blows.
She heard the now familiar whistling sound as another tentacle was about to slam her into the ground and rolling at the last possible second she avoided it, a small crater was all that was left of where she had just been.
This was it, if she didn't do something now she would never make it, her insides were burning with the pain of numerous hits and her ankle screamed in pain every time she moved it or put pressure on it.
Her vision had started to go blurry as she lost more and more blood and took a blow to the head earlier on in the fight.
She also knew that it was blood that she kept coughing up, she wouldn't lie to herself, not now.
She had internal injuries, a broken ankle and severe blood loss…her time was about up.
But she wouldn't go alone, no matter what, Naraku would go with her.
Rolling once more she felt the air rush past her as she barely missed another attack by a hairs breadth. She glared up at the menacing figure who just kept grinning as he attacked her again and again.
What could she do!
As she rose to her feet and stumbled backwards she felt the tip of his tentacle slash down the front of her right arm.
Screaming at the pain she fell back clutching her arm tightly, and too late did she hear the familiar whistle of the tentacles moving towards her.
She barely had time to open her eyes as she saw the tentacle coming at her, fear filled her mind so much so that she almost didn't hear the shout from her right, the shout of Inuyasha.
The tentacle stopped bare inches from her face and looking up she saw Naraku staring to the right, fear shining in his eyes, and that's when she heard it.
The rushing of wind, like a thousand tornado's slowly turning in her direction, she turned her head slowly, her hearing deafened by the noise and saw it. Funnels of grey and white wind, twining into and around each other, moving towards them, and away from Inuyasha.
…Bakuryuuha.
She saw him barely between the wind, his eyes glowing a faint pink colour as he poured his energy deep into Tetsusaiga and Bakuryuuha.
She could almost feel the vibrations of the sword as it began to glow, brighter and brighter, even as she started to run away from the attack as fast as she possibly could, she could see it glowing out of the corner of her eye.
And it was then she knew, something was dangerously wrong.
Even as she managed to crawl into a ditch avoiding everything but a few deep cuts from Bakuryuuha she almost felt and heard the crack, seemingly loud and clear above the chaos of Bakuryuuha. Even above the screams of Naraku as he felt the funnels tear into him, tentacles disintegrating, she still heard the crack.
Even as the sounds of Kagura and Kanna dieing joined in with Naraku's screams of pain she still heard it, still felt the disjointed chord through the air.
She blinked back tears as she kept low waiting for Bakuryuuha to run its course, it didn't take long. The blood of Naraku and his detachments though, would stain the grass around them for a much longer time.
And it was then, even as she felt herself passing out from the pain and blood loss pushed herself out of the ditch, that she saw Inuyasha standing there panting heavily, holding the hilt of Tetsusaiga in his hand even as the broken blade of Tetsusaiga lay on the grass, slowly disintegrating in protest against the amount of power used.
For as she fell back down again, unconsciousness taking hold of her mind, she saw the devastation of the attack, no longer did a forest stand around them, but a huge field of dirt, bodies and blood.
It had destroyed everything which had stood equal to or behind Naraku.
They had won.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ End Flashback ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
She hadn't realised it but without thought she had sat down by the tent 'wall', her shoulders shaking as she heaved sobs of shock.
Tetsusaiga was broken, because of her, so many of those demons and humans who had been helping them, dead.
They hadn't stood a chance; she didn't even know how she had survived it.
It was then, as she felt the waves of shock slowly passing over her to be replaced by guilt and grief that it clicked.
Totosai was dead and Tetsusaiga?...was broken.
"No, iie, onegai no" She stopped and shaking, she looked over at the kneeling Miroku by her side, his eyes confirming her worst fears.
"Tetsusaiga…it can't be fixed"
She went still as the words past her chapped lips, Tetsusaiga, it couldn't be fixed, which meant…which meant that Inuyasha had no buffer, no control over himself.
Oh Kami, she had to help him.
Even against the exhaustion she felt she jumped up, and dragged Miroku to his feet as well.
She knew she would get no answer from Sesshoumaru, although he had helped and trained her, he said very little when it concerned his half brother. She knew he disliked her friendship to Inuyasha, as in Sesshoumaru's mind Inuyasha had done nothing to gain respect of any kind, for he saw him as rude, clumsy and brash.
She looked once again at Miroku "Where is he?!" Her voice was strong, no shaking could be heard as she demanded the whereabouts of her friend.
Her heart was pounding hard, it kept jumping in her throat as she replayed the final attack and Tetsusaiga's breaking in her mind.
How as it possible? Tetsusaiga was practically impossible to break. Had it overloaded with the attack? What had happened!
"He is in the northern parts of this forest Miko, I warn you to be careful" She started in shock as she heard the cold words spoken to her even as Sesshoumaru walked out of the tent back into the clearing.
She stared in surprise, what had just happened?
She blinked as she turned back to Miroku questioningly, he sighed and the corners of his mouth turned up very slightly.
"Although it may seem impossible Kagome-Sama, Inuyasha gained a lot of respect and admiration this day, but with that also came fear and revulsion." She frowned, fear? Revulsion? Why?
"Fear…?" She spoke only one word, but it asked an entire question.
Miroku ran a hand through his tangled hair, and for the first time she noticed a lack of prayer beads, she gave a small smile. "When we found you, Inuyasha…he couldn't control himself…h-his demon blood took over and he attacked some of the other demons around." He paused and closed his eyes as he grimaced "He only left after Sesshoumaru attacked him, and Kagome-Sama, you might want to take your healing kit with you, his wounds were grievous"
She felt her blood drain from her face, no, what had Sesshoumaru done to him?
She shook her head and quickly thanked Miroku, her concern overriding her common sense she ran from the tent, ignoring Miroku's cries along with the human and demon looks of confusion she was being sent she ran.
She left behind her first aid kit, the clearing of healing tents and Shippou as she passed by him, she kept on running, as hard as she ever had before into the northern area of the forest around the clearing. The trees were large and ominous as they loomed over her, but she ignored them. She just kept running, her eyes scanning the tree tops, not noticing the low branches whipping across her face, creating scratches on her recently healed skin as she stumbled down ditches and jumped over fallen branches and rocks almost instinctively.
Hoping against hope, she would find him, before it was too late.
