Chapter 8: Treck Through Perilous Woods

Travel the first day was uneventful, and Kurama found himself quickly bored, with only Kaze to keep him amused. He had already explained to Kage what he wanted of the shadow demon, and he was currently spying on the enemy and doing counts of their numbers and locations.

Kage didn't come back until sunset on the second day of travel. His news wasn't pleasant. There were approximately 2000 humans and 1000 demons. Most of the demons were lesser, although a few skilled youkai were among them. Nenki didn't seem to expect an attack very soon, and was staying in the valley to prepare their `base'.

Frowning softly, Kurama sat in his tent and tried to devise a good plan. Kage had drawn a very detailed map for Kurama, showing where all the enemies were, and where Nenki was in the camp as well as his general. The number of each species had also been labeled, and Kurama was incredibly impressed.

"This is an amazing job you've done, Kage. Absolutely amazing," Kurama said, smiling beautifully at Kage, who was blushing slightly. "It is exactly what I need. I couldn't have gotten better. I thank you, and you may rest now in my tent if you wish," Kurama said, and turned his attention back to the map.

Kage took the offer and plopped down in a corner and fell asleep immediately. It had been hard work, all that stealth work.

`What am I going to do…' Kurama thought to himself. `With all these enemy soldiers, I MUST plan this as effectively as possible. There is NO room for mistakes. I believe ambush would be the best… we should slowly pick off the humans, for their number is greatest and they would not be missed. That is one of the upsides of having such a small army. It is so much easier to move with stealth and silence. After we pick off as many humans as possible, we'll send someone in to deplete their resources. After that, the demons will need a food source, and will eat the humans with or without the knowledge of Nenki. That will be the excuse for the human army disappearing so swiftly… After the majority of the humans are dead, there will be a panic, and the demons will finish of the humans entirely. After that, the army will be lowered to 1000. Then, we will attack in a group, driving down their middle to separate them and slowly eat away at them from the center. I will be sure to tell the army to remain close in the center. There will be no chance to retreat, for this whole attack could be suicidal. However, it is the best chance we have to defeat the whole army. I may have to drop my human façade to help.'

After finishing his plans, Kurama explained them to Kaze, who was to tell everyone mind-to-mind the plan.

The next morning they moved out to come close enough to attack the Northern Army, and set up camp. Kurama ordered certain demons pointed out by Kaze to guard duty, and let the others rest and prepare. They would begin picking off the humans late that night.

The plans were executed without mishap. The humans were slowly picked off bit by bit, and Kurama sent out special demons like Kage to slowly destroy their food source, making it look accidental. Unbeknownst to all of Kurama's army, he would nightly meditate and ask the plants in the area without his youki to grow in wagons and destroy their wheels etc. They were happy to, and Kurama's payment to them, instead of the normal youki, was just talking with them and keeping them company during his sleep.

After a week of that process continuously being executed, the Northern Army's demons began to eat the humans without the knowledge of their Lord. Soon other demons in the army caught on and copied the others. The human's numbers were eventually down to approximately 700. Food supplies were strangely becoming useless, and Lord Nenki found himself with a LOT of trouble on his hands. Unable to stop the demons from killing his human army, he began to panic.

That was when Kurama attacked.

They charged the restless army and made it to the center. Horses were left behind at their camp, and even Kurama was fighting. He had been lent a sword by Kannei, who was protecting Kurama during the fight. Kurama knowingly let a few demons attack his back so Kannei wouldn't think him invincible and had to kill them himself.

The fight was long and hard, and Kurama found himself gaining many small scratches. If he came out unharmed, then everyone would be QUITE suspicious.

Soon the majority of the army was defeated, and Nenki immediately called for a retreat. Sesshoumaru's army had only lost 4 youkai, to Kurama shock, although a few were very injured.

"Kurama! Do we follow?" Kaze asked, holding a bloodied arm.

Kurama merely shook his head and calmly cleaned his sword. "No. We are in no condition to be attempting an assassination of Nenki and his remaining warriors. We will stay here to reccouperate, and make sure that Nenki has truly retreated. After we are sufficiently healed for travel, we will make our way back to Sesshoumaru's castle.

All the youkai heard this, and silently agreed with Kurama.

It took another week for all the youkai who were injured to heal, and then Kurama lead them all back to Sesshoumaru's palace.

Gomen ne for the incredibly short chapter, everyone! I need time to think out the plot for this thing, I dunno where I'm going with it! [sweatdrop]
