STARTING OVER

Okay bloodbunny was the first one to suggest a pairing so it is …*drum roll*… Kagome/Hiei!!!!! YAY!!!! Cough cough so ya, there you go…oh ya! I don't own anything…no seriously, I own nothing, im broke as a joke… oh well on with the story!
CHAPTER 4

Sota swallowed loudly and turned to sword so the point was against Hiei's Adam's apple instead of the blade. He almost drooped the sword when flashes of his dead mother and jiichan flashed before his eyes. It was the work of the jaganshi, and Sota knew it, he just couldn't help but feel the effects of the illusions. He closed his eyes tightly when the illusions came into clearer focus, the blood, their spilled entrails, the severed body parts, all of it coming in clearer and clearer detail.

Sota's whole body began to shake, though the sword stayed steady. Kagome waited patiently, while she guarded his back. It only took her a moment to notice why he was hesitating, but when she did she was pissed… more pissed than she was at them coming back, and asking her stupid repetitive questions…she was willing to kill every last one of them and their families for what was happening. Kagome waited; to see what the boys would do, and to see if Shippou would notice what was going on.
Sota let out a strangled sob as the sword fell from his grasp. He fell to his knees, clutching his head. Shippou was by his side in an instant, trying to sooth him. Shippou didn't disappoint her, but he didn't have a fraction of her control, so he did the thing any kitsune would do if his family was being attacked. He lashed out at the attacker.
Shippou snarled viciously as he made a swipe at Hiei as he staggered over to his companions. Hiei, by some miracle, managed to dodge. He wasn't so lucky the second time. Shippou's small, but sharp, claws dug into his wounded shoulder painfully. Hiei fell heavily on his good shoulder, but the force of his landing jarred the sword, making him cry out in pain.
Sota stopped clutching his head, and tried to stand up. Kagome was by his side in an instant cooing to him. She was so proud of Shippou; he hadn't killed the cute jaganshi…wait where did that come from! Kagome felt a blush rise at the most inopportune time, right when the jaganshi got up. The band covering his jagan stated to glow. She could feel him trying to pry into her mind and control her like he had Sota. She stopped his efforts with a glare.
Enough. Kagome said telepathically. Shippou stopped in his tracks and looked at her, but didn't let down his guard. The jaganshi glared at her. She could see his efforts to send her a telepathic message he finally gave up and spoke in a tight, pain filled voice.
"You started it onna."

Kagome was surprised, and impressed that he could talk while he was in so much pain.
I warned you.
"We where following orders."

So? It's not my fault you chose your job over your life.

"…"

It's nice to meet a person who doesn't argue just for the sake of arguing. It's a shame I have to kill you.
"Why do you have to kill us?"
The others, who where watching Hiei communicate with Kagome, blanched at this question. They looked to Kagome, then back to Hiei; nervously awaiting the outcome. Everyone present knew that the Spirit Detective's fates where in Hiei's hands.
Because, If I let you go others will come and attack me, thinking I will let them off. So you see, it's my rep. against your lives. What would you choose if you where in my position?
"Reputation." He answered reluctantly, but truthfully.
Exactly. So why should I spare you?
"Because we are offering our allegiance."
Kagome's eyebrow arched gracefully.
I already have powerful allies.

"So what's a few more?"
Kagome raised her slim fingers to the bridge of her nose, but stopped halfway there and let her hand rest on Sakki's sheath instead.
Damn your logic…fine. But I want introductions to be done by you; I also want to know all of your weaknesses and strengths.
"Fine. Remove the sword."
Kagome walked forward and, none to gently, pulled the sword out of his shoulder. With the sword removed, the wound bled profusely. Kagome sighed mentally before kneeling beside the wounded demon. Said demon grunted in pain and tried to scoot away from her.
Stop squirming. I'm not going to hurt you.

Hiei followed her orders and watched in amazement as her hand glowed a dark pink, almost red. To his further amazement the wound on his shoulder healed instantly.
Those gathered around them gasped in surprise when they saw this. The Spirit Detective group gasped again when Hiei accepted her assistance to stand. Once standing Hiei turned to them and surprised them yet again when he started talking.
"The one in green is Urameshi Yuske. His main attack is the Spirit Wave. His main weakness is his inability to listen." This got a `Hey' from Yuske, but no one else said anything so he continued.
" The one in blue is Kuwabara Kazuma, His main attack is a pitiful spirit sword. His main weakness is his stupidity." This comment got a few sniggers from Yuske, and a `I'm gonna kill ya shorty!' from Kuwabara. Hiei, choosing to ignore both of the, continued.
"The one in pink is Suichi M. (how do you spell his last name?), or Yokou Kurama. His main strength is the spirit fox he merged with. His main weakness is his kindness." No one said anything. They where stunned that Hiei would just tell that to her.
"I assume you know Koenma since you called him by name, and recognized him as the care taker of Rekia. My name is Hiei (does Hiei even have a sir name?). My main attack is the Dragon of the Darkness Flame. My biggest weakness is my independence." The S.D.'s where stunned into silence. That was the most they had ever heard Hiei say all at once.
"What about you onna?" Hiei was curious to know someone who could follow his movements and surprise him.
"The fox is my kit, Shippou. The other boy is Sota, my brother. My name is Higurashi Kagome."
Hiei's eyebrow twitched. "What about your strengths and weaknesses?"
I never said I would give you ours.
Hiei growled and Kagome smirked, mentally of course. Shippou growled in response. It was obvious that he didn't trust any of them. Kagome silenced him with a thought. Though he continued to glare.
Hiei, what did you come here for?
The question roused him from the glaring contest with Shippou. He looked at Koenma for a second, expecting him to answer. Then he realized that she was talking exclusively to him.
"We came to ask you to join our team for the dark tournament."
Kagome raised a sexy eyebrow…wait where did that come from?
Dark tournament?

"It's a tournament where demons and humans fight to get a prize, only the fights are almost always to the death. And if you get an invitation, like we did, then you cant back down."
Why do you want me?
"Because you're strong."
Kagome nodded her head slightly, this movement caught Shippou and Sota off guard. Kagome never did stuff like that! The jaganshi…er Hiei must have said something right.
So be it, but Shippou and Sota come with, and fighting.
Hiei's eyes narrowed a bit.
"No."
In turn Kagome's eyes also narrowed a bit.
What?
"No."
Why?
"We are not a babysitting service."
Kagome clenched her jaw, though no one noticed, because they where staring at Hiei like he just sealed their death warrant.

Then become one. They are coming, and fighting.
"No, we cant afford to lose any fights."
Then why is Kuwabara on the team?
This question made him stop and think about it. Hiei brought his hand up to his chin in an uncharacteristic thinking pose.
"I suppose you're right. If we get rid of the baka we can have three good fighters replace one bad one…alright, it's a deal. Kuwabaka goes."
The birds at the shrine flew away with the commotion that followed.
"WHAT WAS THAT SHORTY? THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL THAT SOME STUPID PUNK KID IS GONNA TAKE MY PLACE ON THE TEAM!"
Kagome, Kurama, Hiei, and Shippou winced because of their sensitive hearing. Kagome growled in the back of her throat and motioned for Sota to shut him up. Sota was happy to shut the moron up, if only to relieve his family's aching ears.
Sota stalked up behind the fuming Kuwabara, laced his hands together, and dealt him a crushing blow to the back of his head. Kuwabara crumpled into a silent heap. The spirit detectives walked up to him to pat his back, and thank him when they saw him take up a defensive stance.
It was obvious that this one didn't trust them either. Kagome foreseeing a problem motioned them all towards the Goshinboku.
"Why don't we all tell our pasts? It will make it easier to trust each other. Why don't one of you go first?"
Yuske began first.
"Well this all started when I died saving a kid… (insert Yuske's story)"
Kurama went next.
"I was a spirit fox named Yokou Kurama…. (insert Kurama's story)"
Then Kuwabara.
"I was the worst punk at…(insert Kuwabara's stupid story)"
Finally Hiei.
" I am the product of an ice, and fire apparition falling in love…(insert Hiei's story)"
Kagome had kept up her stoic mask through all the stories, though her heart went out to Hiei and his tragic past. ( I'll assume you know his past)
Kagome took a deep breath before delivering a very watered down version of her story.
"On my fifteenth birthday I was dragged down the Hone Kui No Ido to the Singoku Jidia. While there I found out that I am the protector of the Shikon no Tama, I broke the jewel into countless pieces that spread all over Japan. I search for the shards with an inu hanyou, a perverted monk, a taijiya, a fire neko, my adopted kitsune son, and my little brother."
When it was obvious that she wasn't going to say anymore the S.D.'s got a little angry. After all they had told her unedited, unshortened, full detail stories of their past, and she wont even tell them the names of her friends form across the well!
Hiei, by some strange twist of fate, wasn't angry.
"You'll explain this to me later onna."
Kagome inexplicitly looked angry.
My name is Kagome, use it.
Hiei threw off one of his `hn's and left them in a swirl of clothing and pine scented wind. Kagome was seething on the inside, though on the outside her stoic expression never changed.
"So, is it a deal then? You three for Kuwabara?" Yuske asked, just a bit to cheerfully.
Kagome just nodded and motioned for her boys to follow her into the house to gather their weapons. Right before they entered the house Kagome called over her shoulder in a bored tone.
"I assume that you will want to train with me before we have to face life and death situations together. You better prepare yourselves, I wont go easy."
