Prologue:

Stars blinked cheerfully down on the small blue planet known as Earth. In the streellightless era of the Fuedal Age of Japan a lone woman stood on a knoll staring up at them in silent contemplation of all her choices, both those in the past and those currently troubling her. Clutched in her upraised hand was a small pink gem that glittered brightly even in the darkness of midnight.

It was over at last, she thought. The evil calling himself 'Naraku' was gone, even his soul now nothing but scattered pieces sealed in the earth itself, courtesy of the combined efforts of her dearest friends, those with spiritual powers binding each piece in the farthest corners of the world, those without doing the harder work of seperating his soul into those peices.

She had a promise to fulfill.

Sighing in near regret, her head turned toward the tiny village in the distance that had become her home in the Fuedal era. Whatever happened, she knew she was surely blessed to have known these people. They had welcomed her into their homes, their lives. And they hadn't had to.

She smiled down on the pair watching her from the bottom of the hill, their hands almost touching, leaning slightly together so as to take comfort in the other's presence. Miroku had been gone for several months taking his peice of the tainted soul to the most inhospitable place he could find, and Sango had done nothing but mope while he was gone. She had hoped that the separation would bring them closer together, but it seemed her hopes in that area were in vain. Farther off she could sense the presence of a very powerful demon, his form hidden in the treeline. He knew she knew he was there, and was waiting for her decision. Looking beyond the forest, she easily picked out the Goshinboku, even from this distance she could see the bright red in the great tree's branches in the light of the full moon.

Resolutely she calmly walked down the hill toward the tree. She bypassed her dearest friends and only nodded at the stoic demon Lord whose eyes gleamed coldly at her as she passed.

Slowing at the portal to her home she ran a finger along the edge as she walked by it. Whatever happened, whereever it ended, she would be happy, she could feel it.

Finally she stopped under the Time Tree and looked up into the branches. "Inuyasha?"

A thump sounded behind her and she turned to find her most beloved friend watching her with so many emotions in his eyes there wasn't enough room for them on his face. "Keh?"

She giggled. She couldn't help it. It was just so Inuyasha for him to say that. She smiled at him, and the hand that held the glittering gem lifted and opened under his gaze. "Here," she said simply.

Avidly, the inu-hanyou looked at the jewel he coveted more than anything. Well, almost more than anything. He tore his golden eyes away from it to look at the young woman holding it. "Just like that? Just 'here'?"

She smiled a little more brightly and nodded. "I made a promise."

Letting out a shuddering breath, Inuyasha slowly lifted his hand to hover over hers. He hesitated. "Are you sure?"

"Hm-hmm. Take it."

His hand closed over hers as he stared into her glowing eyes that put the stars to shame. He looked down at their joined hands and then ... he sighed gustily. "I can't."

"But, your wish," she said confused.

He felt the presence of the demon Lord receding, his attendance no longer needed. He shook his head vigorously, silver hair arcing out in a shining wave. "Any wish I make would be a selfish one. You make it."

She gasped in shock. He was giving up his heart's desire? Tearing up, she couldn't help but smile even wider. Finally lowering her gaze to their still joined hands, she closed her eyes and cleared her mind, wrapping the feel of the night around her like a cloak. Silence decended all around as a single thought dripped into place.

I wish the jewel could never hurt anyone ever again.

It was both right and so very wrong, she knew it instinctively, even as brilliant pink fire flared up around their joined hands. It completely engulfed them both, scortchingly hot.

Kagome screamed and Inuyasha screamed with her.

Pain raged through them as the jewel fought to both retain its presence and obey the wish of its Guardian. Then ...

HELP HER, the hanyou cried out, reaching through the fire to pull his dearest friend to him, though not even his fire-rat was protecting him from the purification that circled wildly around them.

Deep within them both, they heard the resulting chime of multiple voices cheering in victory.

The fires flared brighter for a moment, then before her eyes Inuyasha began to crumble into ash as the power of the jewel fueled her own purification. Heart-wrenching agony possessed her as the power of the unassuming little gem melded with her, forcing her eyes to incandes for a moment, blinding her.

As suddenly as it had begun the power dropped her to the ground, receding into her. She held her hands up to her face, her fingers slowly curling around the last few ashes that remained of her first love.

The shriek that echoed throughout the forest reached every ear, and brought tears to every eye, human or demon. Miroku and Sango raced to the Time tree but found only the slowly fading body of Kagome, her face buried in her hands, and the shapeless swirl of ashes that surrounded her. Before her lay Tetsusaiga, the great sword seeming dull without the presence of its master.

"Kagome?" they said at the same time.

Just as she faded completely they heard her whisper, "He's gone, and it's all my fault!"

*********

I make no promises as to when this will be updated. I just happened to have a thought running through my head I couldn't get rid of until I wrote it out. So, I have given this to my betas' Kita and Subu-chan for help in coming up with a good plot. If you enjoyed this beginning, please review it so I know I can think about updating it sooner. Otherwise it will just sit on my list of fics as a simple prologue. For those of you who have read my other two active fics, "To Mend a Broken Heart" and "Predator and Prey" I want you to know that if I decide to write on this fic, it will slow updates, though I will try to get at least one chapter out to one of the three every week or so. Depends on when the muse strikes ... Any way, many thanks to my Betas who have wonderfully supportive of "Predator and Prey". It is thanks to their encouragement that I continued it. So now everybody REVIEWS PLEASE!!
