Tears Of Darkness

Chapter One: The Demoness

"You insolent, condescending human scum!" The angered demoness cried out striking Kuwabara down with one sweep of her silver blade that was surrounded in a dark purple aura. Her eyes flared with rage as he was sent crashing into a tree that was fifty feet away. A frown placed upon her lips, "How dare you mock my pain when you know nothing of it!" She shook violently with rage, the sword quivering in her grasp and her eyes narrowed.

~*~*~Flashback To Earlier~*~*~

A rustle in the forest caught the Tentei's attention.

A mildly short teenage looking girl emerged dressed in a black kimono with crimson fringes. Her crimson colored waist length hair floated almost ghostly behind and her amethyst eyes held no emotion in them. A sword with a silver handle with a blood ruby encrusted in it was at her waist and ancient scriptures ran up the deadly blade that glinted and winked in the sun. Her morbid beauty shot down any thoughts of her being human.

She walked, almost glided, over to them. Her hair swept across her face in the breeze as she walked lightly upon the green grass beneath her.

"I suppose you are this Inoriko, our guide, then?" Kurama asked raising his eyebrows at the demoness who stood before them.

"You suppose correct," she answered in a passionless tone.

"So what kind of demon are you?" Kuwabara pried dumbly. She didn't resemble anything benevolent, he would have expected her to be more fierce and scary looking if anything.

"That is none of your certain nor is it any of your business, human." She countered quietly, "Unless you wish to die." She rested a loose grip on the sword at her side threateningly.

Kuwabara took the hint and backed off the question, even he wasn't that stupid, but he still looked reproachful of her.

"We were kinda expecting a…you know." Yusuke stammered uncertainly looking her up and down.

"A human?" she asked, amusement flickering across her stone face, "A pathetic measly human that would guide you around this place." She chuckled darkly before becoming serious again. "You'd die in under a day with a human guide Yusuke. Humans cannot stand up to the might of demons in this time very well."

An, "Oh," escaped Kuwabara's mouth in his simplicity.

A shallow and cruel smile played on her lips, "Humans are truly weak beings after all."

"Oh really?" Yusuke stated clenching his fist so tightly that his knuckles were turning white. He had only been in this place for a few minutes and already he was getting annoyed.

"Of course," she smirked at him sinisterly, "But there are a few exceptions, but none of them are present right now."

Kuwabara got irked off at this snide comment, "You think you're better then us, is that it punk?"

She laughed lightly, "Kuwabaka, please. It's no contest between humans and demons."

"You want to get pounded?" He asked grinding one of his fists into his other palm.

"Don't joke Kuwabaka," Inoriko grinned with a slight growl in her tone.

"I'll fight you here and now. See if that knocks you off your high horse." Kuwabara declared and displeased with the nickname Kuwabaka that she was already using for him.

She turned to her left and beckoned them, acting as though he hadn't said anything, "Follow me if you would be so kind."

"I don't trust her you guys," Kuwabara whispered as he watched her walk away, still fuming inside himself, "I got this bad vibe."

"I'm sure we all do," Kurama responded staring critically at Inoriko who was seeming casual although he was sure she could hear everything they were saying. "Koenma did say that he found her on extremely short notice and that we should be considerably careful."

Yusuke nodded at this, "Makes sense, but we have no way of being certain."

"We'll just have to wait," Hiei said folding his arms across his chest and started following her.

"Something up with him?" Yusuke wondered aloud.

"Hiei's right," Kurama sighed ignoring Yusuke, pausing for a moment then continuing, "We'll have to wait this one out, but still, we must focus on our mission."

The day was sunny with snow white clouds scattered across the sky with a gentle breeze. It was early morning though, for the grass was wet with dew and a certain coldness hung in the air around them as they walked in silence.

"You don't have to trust me," she said eyeing them all after the uneasy and awkward silence. "Just put your blind faith in me and hope for the best."

"You make it sound so simple," Kurama put it bluntly.

"So it's complicated then?" She arched an eyebrow at him.

"Very," he replied. "But to the point, Koenma didn't tell us the…circumstances of our mission, can you elaborate for us, if you may?"

She looked thoughtful for a few minutes then said, "From what I know there is this jewel that this reincarnated priestess from your time is trying to purify, but she only has a few of the shards because it got scattered all over. The other sacred jewels shards are in the hands of a demon named Naraku who will undoubtedly use it for evil and that's how you fit in. You must help her destroy him and his incarnations to stop him." A dull look was in her eyes as she preceded without much interest, "Simple, ne?" She waited a minute then said, "Or do I need to repeat myself because it was too complicated for some of you to understand?"

Kuwabara shook his fist at her, "I'm not an idiot you know!" He spat.

"Say it, don't spray it Kuwabaka," she retorted, bored by him.

"Calm down Kuwabara," Kurama ordered closing his eyes then reopening them, "She's just trying to stir you up. That's all."

"I was just wanted to know if he needed a more straightforward explanation," she prompted, trying to sound innocent, but her emotionless voice gave her away.

"Believe me when I say that we understand our mission," Kurama said.

She pouted, there went her fun with the human, "That's all I needed to know."

"So, how powerful is this Naraku?" Yusuke questioned, getting more into his detective mode.

"Quite powerful," Inoriko answered truthfully, "You haven't faced anyone like him. Powerful is the keyword here Yusuke, he's not someone to be underestimated at all." Powerful was the KEYWORD, he was not someone to toil with, but they would see that in time.

"That strong, huh?" He stared at the scenery as they strolled past, his hands in his jean pockets. (A/N: They are all wearing the clothes that they wore in the Sensui Arc, since I'm too lazy to change their outfits ^-^") Feudal Japan seemed more serene then he had thought at first, it was hard to believe that there were demons roaming around in this time as well destroying villages and killing people.

She nodded, but said nothing. They knew nothing of the destruction Naraku could bring and she did.

Kuwabara let out a long whistle, "I guess we'll have our work cut out for us then guys."

"Hn. (A/N: Hiei needs more dialogue >.<) Speak for yourself." Hiei muttered in response.

Kuwabara pressed his face into Hiei with a throbbing vein, "You want to fight shrimp?"

"Don't be a moron," Hiei sweatdropped at his idiocy, "Your dinky fighting skills are no match for me."

Kuwabara rolled up his sleeves, "You want to find out shorty?" His voice raising louder.

"You want to die?" Hiei retorted.

"Children," Yusuke humored, "Play nice."

"Alright," Kuwabara grumbled while slouching, "But he started it."

"It never ceases to amaze me," Inoriko said, "How impudent humans can be."

"Shut it!" Kuwabara snapped at her, "Not all humans are as pathetic as you think."

"Could have surprised me." She mused, but not taking her eyes off of him.

Something flashed across Kuwabara's eyes, fury. "Don't talk about what you don't understand!"

Her eyes widened a little, "What I don't understand? Listen human, I'm two millennia older then you. I think there is very little about what I don't understand." She was trying to hide the irritation in her voice, but failing as emotions clashed inside of her. She understood much more then he could ever comprehend in a ten thousand years.

"Humans aren't dirt beneath your feet that you can stomp on when you like." Kuwabara declared in his defense, "Besides, we feel more then you ever could!"

She froze and stared at him with a mix of pure hatred and confusion before hissing, "Hold your tongue Kuwabaka." Venom dripping from each word as it rolled off her tongue and was made audible to listening ears. "I've felt with so much compassion it'd make you go insane." Her hand grabbed the handle of her sword and she stood with her feet apart ready to bash him in if she desired to do so. "I've loved more then you could ever even dream!" And with that she wiped around and in a flash of movement, she was holding her sword to his throat as his face pales significantly.

"You really think killing me will make you a better person?" Kuwabara inquired, locking in on her amethyst colored orbs.

~*~*~End Of Flashback~*~*~

Yusuke and Kurama ran over to Kuwabara to see if he was alright while Inoriko stood completely still with her sword still held out. They helped him to his feet and Kurama gave her a dark look, "That was a bad move on your behalf."

"Does it look like I gave a damn?" She growled putting her sword down and diverting her eyes from his, allowing herself to calm down. "That was a warning Kuwabaka, next time I will kill you if you step out line again." And with that she marched on, the sleeves of her kimono fluttered as she did so.

"Bit of a mood swinger, isn't she?" Yusuke pointed out.

"There's no denying that we'll have to keep on our toes around her." Kurama agreed, "Are you alright Kuwabara?"

The orange headed teenager nodded gloomily, "Yeah, but I sensed saw inside of her. It was like at the Dark Tournament when I saw those memories of Dr. Ichigaki's team." Shadows cast over his face, hiding the upper part of his face from view. "So much pain…"

Kurama lowered his eyelids at this as he helped Kuwabara, "Whatever it is, it's none of our business. Just try to relax for now. We'll figure things out later."
