Chapter Nine -- Waiting
room was bathed in the soft flickering light of the television monitor. Nakago lounged before the screen, azure eyes fixated upon it as Soi tended to his wounded shoulder. The only sound was that of the light tinkling of water as Soi dipped her cloth in the basin, then wrung it to pat gently at the burn. When she had finished she gathered her items and left, bowing slightly to Naraku whom she passed on his way in.
eyes joined Nakago's in their study of the scene on the monitor. Naraku's gaze flicked momentarily to the now bandaged shoulder of his companion. "The boy is impressive."
smiled, "That he is but he can only access that amount of power instinctually. The boy has no control."
nodded, "Next time we will seperate them."
light tap sounded at the door. "Enter."
Kaiba swept open the door and into the room. "Well?"
with all the grace of a resting feline, Nakago moved towards Seto, "It will not be long, Seto Kaiba. I told you that it may take several days before the girl breaks. She is very strong willed."
opened his mouth to speak but movement and sound from the monitor stopped the words. He turned to the screen to see Akari pushing away from Yusuke, the thin sheet falling away to expose the deep lash marks on her back as she fell to her hands and knees with a cry. Seto's eyes narrowed, "When are you planning to persuade her again?"
one hour," Naraku responded, sharing a secretive glance with Nakago.
shall be there," Seto growled as he left the room, shutting the door with a loud bang.
shook his head, chuckling. "I do not think that he appreciates our methods of persuasion, Nakago," Narkau hissed.
care not what he appreciates. Let him try to stop us. We have a contract. I am merely living up to my end of it."
returned to watching the screen with hungry eyes.

returned to the conferance room, after hours of wandering through the estate with Sesshomaru at her side, supposedly garnering psychic impressions. All eyes turned to the porcelein faced miko as she stood at the head of the room. Chichiri rose, "Well Ms. Kikyou...what have you found?"
can not sense Akari's presence anywhere in Japan. Furthermore I can detect no hint of foul play."
fucking bullshit," Inu Yasha cried, leaping to his feet, slamming a clawed fist into the oak table.
gestured for the hanyou to be silent, as did Sesshomaru accompanied by a disapproving growl. The advisor turned his attentetion back to the miko. "Thank you for you cooperation Ms. Kikyou. Touya will you please show her the way out."
soon as the door swung shut behind the red head and the miko, the room erupted with sound. Chichiri leaned forward, putting his elbows on the table, rubbing his temples. "This is not helping," he muttered.
commanding voice rose above the din, "Silence!"
the household fell into silence but Inu Yasha continued to rant, "She's a fucking liar, anyone with a half decent god damn nose knows."
don't usually agree with dog face but," Kouga spoke up, "He's right."
gave the two youkai a puzzled look, then turned to Sesshomaru for explanation. "Even now the scent of Akari's fear lingers in the air. She did not leave her of her own will."
sighed again, as all those with demon blood nodded assent. "I have sensed that she is blocking our efforts, therefore, I have already placed a call to an old friend of mine."
is this friend?" Kenshin asked curiously.
is a monk, a budhist monk. I have complete faith in him. He will not fail us."

Yusuke lay his head back against the cold brick wall, sighing. The fever that had girpped Akari was gone and she slept seemingly peaceful curled with her head in his lap. Absently he stroked her hair as he tried to think of a way out of their cell. Even if he used his spirit gun to break down the door, he had no idea what lay on the other side of it. How many guards did they have out there? He had no idea even where they were. How big was the compound they were in? Without answers to those questions and Akari injured as she was there was no way he could make any attempt at an escape. Akari stirred at his side, with a small moan and he touched her cheek gently. "Akari?"
eyes flew open and she pushed away from him, crying out as the movement reopened one of the wounds on her back. She fell forward, trembling. Yusuke moved toward her, calling her name softly. Akari looked up at him through a veil of mouse brown hair. "Yusuke?" she whispered, voice hoarse from screaming.
here," he said, reaching out and taking her by her upper arms, helping her to rise to her knees.
fell against him, wrapping her arms around him, burying her face in his chest. He wanted to wrap his arms around her, to hold her tight enough to stop her quivering, but was afraid of causing her further injury. "Akari, I'm so sorry," he whispered against her hair.
head snapped up as he heard the lock click open, Akari yelped, holding him tighter. "No, not again."
door opened but neither Nakago nor Naraku came through the door. Instead Soi sauntered into the room, followed by the twins and the wolf man. "Yusuke, follow me."
leave me Yusuke, please," Akari's frantic voice reached his ears.
shook his head, "Don't worry, Akari. I'm not going anywhere."
folded her arms haughtily. "I was told you would say that. Amiboshi, if you please."
of the sandy hair twins raised a delicate flute to his lips and soon the air was filled with its crystal notes. Try though he might Yusuke was powerless against the musical magic and soon his eyes slid shut.

The sky outside the window was crowded with thick smoke grey clouds, pregnant with rain. Sapphire eyes, cold as the stone they resembled, stared out at the gloomy weather. Fat raindrops began to beat at the window. The eyes did not see the rain, all they saw were deep red lines on pale flesh. He had thought himself in complete control of the situation, how had events gone so awry? Then again, what care did he have for what his companions did, as long as events ended as he wished?

"Big brother?" A small voice registered on the edge of his hearing but he was lost in thought. The voice came again, a little more forceful, "Seto!"

Seto Kaiba turned from the window, seeing his brother standing in the doorway. A little warmth crept into his eyes. "What is it Mokuba?"

"There is a representative of the Merck Company here to see you."

Seto looked at the clock. Almost an hour had passed since he had spoken with Nakago and Naraku. "Tell him I don't have time to see him. He can schedule a meeting for tomorrow."

"Yes, Seto." Mokuba turned to leave but Seto called him back into the room.

"Find the security tapes for Warehouse B."

"Why?"

"I want to see what my associates have been up to."

After his younger brother left, Seto moved purposefully toward his private elevator.

Chichiri stood as the boy returned. "I'm sorry but Seto can't see you today. Would you like to schedule a meeting for tomorrow?"

The blonde nodded and Mokuba moved behind a desk, tapping a few keys. His suspicions of Kaiba's involvement in Akari's kidnapping were becoming fast confirmed. He had been trying for the last several days to contact Seto Kaiba and everytime he was told Seto was busy. Prior to arriving in Japan Kaiba Corp employees had always been helpful and Seto himself had spoken with Chichiri several times. There was not enough to give the local authorities but it was enough for the others to begin watching Kaiba Corp. Mokuba handed him a slip of paper with a time on it. Chichiri thanked the boy and turned on his heel.
Tasuki was waiting for him at the car. "Well?"

"I think Kaiba is involved. We'll set watches on the building."

"What about Kikyou?"

"Does that answer your question?" Chichiri said, pointing. Tasuki followed the gesture to see Kikyou entereing the front door of Kaiba Corp.

Even in sleep she could not escape the pain. Flashes of pain radiated from her back and shoulders, she could not really tell where exactly the pain was coming from, her whole body screamed with it. As Akari awoke she realized that she was laying on her back, causing her even more pain but when she tried to roll to her side she found that she couldn't. She couldn't even move her head. Her eyes flew open and she found herself staring at a white tiled ceiling. Through her pain she barely registered the leather straps that were holding her to the cold steel table. Her heart began to thud in her chest, her breathing becoming fast and shallow as panic welled within her. Akari was about to call out for Yusuke when she heard the sound of metal clattering on metal. Nakago's face appeared into her line of vision. His azure eyes gazing at her half naked form hungrily.

"Did you miss me Akari?" he asked softly, his fingers brushing her cheek making her skin crawl.

"Don't, please," she whimpered, her automatic attempt to draw away from his hand sent new slivers of pain through her.

Her pleading brought a cruel smile to his lips. "Don't what Akari? Don't do this?" he asked, trailing his fingers over her cheek bone again. "Or this?"

She had not seen the scapel in his other hand but she felt it as the cold metal bit into her flesh again. She screamed, new tears leaking from the corners of her eyes.

His first thought upon waking was that the first thing he would do when he got out of this damn prison would be wrap that damn flute around that damn kids neck. Then he realized that he could not move. His eyes flew open and he found himself bound to a chair with thick metal cuffs, there was even a band running around his head keeping his gaze fixed into the room beyond the glass in front of him. He felt as if the same cold iron bands were clenched around his heart as he saw Nakago standing over Akari. She was strapped to a steel table, beside it was another tray of surgical instruments. When the blonde's hand moved toward one of those instruments, he cursed. "Get the fuck away from her!"

A door opened somewhere behind him. "Now now, Yusuke, mind your manners. You'll ruin the show for Seto."
