Chapter 4
"Kurama!?!?!" I exclaimed surprised by his presence. "What are you doing here? Do you need something?" I didn't hide my feeling of suspicion. The kitsune was too smart to fall for my acts and masks. I don't particularly hate the youko that inhabited this human body or the human for the matter. I just don't like being taken off guard and I'm not someone that you can buy trust from so easily.
His face was cool and calculated as he spoke to me, "Nothing in particular. I'm just on a walk. And you?" Psht! Yeah right! They don't trust me either. I probably lost Yususke's trust and Kuwabara is just scared of me. They are keeping watch on me and it appears that it would be Kurama's turn.
"Just a walk too," was my response.
"Could I possibly join you then?"
"I suppose." I relaxed a bit, but my guard was still up and tight.
We walked aimlessly in unsure silence. I finally decided to break the silence, even though I prefer to be alone at peace and quiet, this moment in hushed guard unnerved me greatly. "Yususke must be very angry with me now." I had stated more than asked.
He seemed slightly surprised by my voice piercing the eerily noiseless night air. "I suppose he would be upset. From what I know, he had known you before and must feel a bit betrayed that you hadn't told him about your…circumstance." He was trying to avoid remarking about my fallen state. I'm quiet pleased that he remembered that it bothered me, but it doesn't discomfort me enough not to mention it slightly.
"It's alright. I'm fallen. You can say it. Yususke and I were "childhood friends". Don't get me wrong. I'm not a mere fifteen years of age like I let on. I'm very old, quite ancient in fact. Almost five hundred years. Four hundred ninety-nine years to be exact. Five hundred this year in July. Just about as old as you, Youko." His face was twisted in slight shock. "Oh yes, I know about you Youko. It's a gift. An…angelic gift. I can "see" what I want to see about almost anyone. I can see who they really are. When I look at you I see Youko's spirit linger over you."
"I…see," his face still showed confusion. "And your "childhood" with Yususke?"
Ah, sharp boy. Sharp, intelligent, handsome, and strong, a very dangerous mix. "When I became fallen, I had to start over. Pretend I was human, so my body took the form of my younger self. I found another fallen angel to assist in my pretense. She was very willing to help me. You see, we angels, fallen or not, are very much in tuned to our kind, we know when one of us walks among the humans and/or demons. We pretended that she was my sister and that we lost our parents in some unfortunate accident, but just until I "grown" old enough to live on my own, which was recently when I turned "fourteen". And mind you, for someone who ages like I do, two years seem like 2 hours. I had met Yususke during school; he was always the bored, lazy, and bad-boy type. Is he still like that right now?"
"Yes, Yususke doesn't seem like the type to care much, but he has a sense of justice and kindness," Kurama chuckled slightly.
"Yususke was fun to hang out with. I had to choose the type of person I wanted to pretend to be, so I chose the energetic tomboy. Who knew that it would make me instant friends with Yususke. I think I had also developed a kind of crush for him." I smiled here slightly. "But I couldn't bring myself to take it any further than friendship. Yususke was human after all. I didn't doubt that he would understand. I just couldn't. I had a lover before I met Yususke and I had hurt him so badly, I don't feel like I could love another person that way again. It's because I loved him and that he loved me back that I became fallen. I did something so bad to him that he probably hates me now, but I can't hate him. It's my fault after all and I still love him." I could feel my eyes glaze over with tears, but I wouldn't allow them to fall or my voice to shake. I kept myself firm. "Yususke is one of the few friends I have, but at the moment. I don't know if he will be my friend anymore." I didn't like the way this conversation was going. I made a quick excuse to leave. Looking at my watch I said, "I'm sorry Kurama, but I need to go feed my cat now. She must be hungry right now. I'll see you later." With that said I ran, just until I was out of Kurama's sight, took off my jacket, and spread my wings, flying out of the woods and straight to my house.
I won't let myself cry. Absolutely not! I will not cry! I chanted over and over in my head. My front door was merely a few yards away from me. At the last possible minute, before I hit the door I made a portal and retracted my wings into my back. On the other side of the portal as well as the door I fell to the floor. I made a few dry sobs, trying to recompose my self. After standing up and a few deep breaths I walked into the kitchen, making a few whistling noises and calling out the name Ami.
"Ami…where are you…Ami? It's breakfast…Ami?" I heard the door behind me creak and turned around just as a giant body covered in fur tackled me. "Ah! Ami! Ami! Get off me!" I laughed joyously. My eyes were closed as a giant nose and lips nuzzled my face. "Ah! Ami! You're tickling me! Get off!" I tried to shove her body off of me without success. "Ami! You're so big and heavy now! You're getting too big for this!" I complained.
"Oh, but what can I do? I'm punishing you. You're late! And I'm hungry!" Ami spoke to me telepathically. Her voice showed great agitation, but also amusement.
"Alright, alright, you black hole! All you do is eat, sleep, and tear up my furniture like a regular housecat."
"But I am a housecat. You can't do anything about it. Besides that's what tigers do. We hunt, eat, and sleep, but since I live here with you, I have no need to hunt. You just spoil me and make me fat. Now what are you so sad about?"
"Oh, nothing. I just need some cheering up. I'm under some stress." I opened the freezer door to show that it was full of meat, raw, cold, frosted meat. The only thing that stood out in this meaty artic was my giant tub of ice cream. I pulled out a package labeled pork/breakfast and put it in the microwave, then turned around to shut the freezer door and talk some more to Ami. "Koenma wants put me in another school and another uniform. Did my uniform come in yet?"
"I believe it did. It was a big brown package. I think it's in the living room. You know. You have such a big house, but there's only you and me."
"Yes, well this mansion is mostly for you. You need the space. I'd go crazy it we lived in an apartment. You'd shed everything into little tiny bits. It so happens that is why I allowed you to tear up anything you want in three different bedrooms!"
"Hey, hey! I need to keep my claws sharp."
"Right," I said doubtfully as I took the meat out of the microwave and then out of the bag only to put it in a big bowl for Ami. "I swear, Ami! You're eating more and more everyday!"
"I'm still growing."
"Still growing!?!?! Ami! You're huge already! At this rate, you'll be the biggest tiger ever!"
"Not biggest. I'm nothing compared to some of the other demon tigers. My pa and ma are much bigger."
"How big do you think you're going to get?"
"Hm…maybe up till half way to yourshoulder."
"Ami…"
"Yes…?"
"You're getting too big."
"Yeah, so I'm a big tiger."
"You're up to my waist! At first I was able to pass you as a big cat, then a very big odd looking dog! Now I can't even pass you as a pet! I think I need to take you back to the Makai."
"What!?!?" Ami instantly stopped eating and focused on what I was saying. "I don't want to leave Tori! You have enough space in this giant house to hide me! You have a pretty big piece of land too!"
"Oh, no! Don't get upset now. I was joking. I wouldn't really let you go!" I hugged her neck affectionately. "You've always been there! I'm not going to let you go anywhere! Never!"
"Don't joke around like that! It's not funny!"
"Of course. I'm sorry; I think it's the stress."
We paused in a comfortable silence. I stroked Ami's back as she ate. I started to think about my life with Yususke a few years back. I had a lot of fun then. My life was so carefree and…well…fun! No worries about demons coming after me. No worries about how to please my lord. No worries what so ever. Sure I'm about five hundred human years of age, but I was masked as a child a few years ago and I only had a few more worries than the average human child. My life was basically like any other child's life. I was more of a delinquent than most children, but, my "sister", Nialla, Nia for short, was never really worried about it. She didn't even scold me when I did something wrong. Of course I wasn't a very responsible child, so I would most likely get into a lot of trouble. Nia was very caring. I was so surprised at how nice and wonderfully loving she was to me, when I wasn't even biologically related to her.
"Oh! Ami! I was just thinking of Nia and that reminds me. Has Nia come by to visit while I was out? I've been missing a lot of her lately," I said to Ami.
"Nope. She hasn't come by once in the last 3 months."
"You don't think she forgot about us do you? I mean, being as how we don't age quickly like humans, do you think she has been losing track of time?"
"Nia is very responsible. She isn't like you."
"Hey! What does that mean?"
"Exactly what it sounds like. You can be an irresponsible twit and get so deep into trouble that you can't get out, while Nia can get out of anything. She doesn't cause problems like you."
"Eh!?!?! You really want to go back to the Makai don't you!?!?"
"No, no. I'll shut up now," Ami grumbled as she started to flex her claws.
"I thought so." Suddenly the bell rang. Saving me from a possible death as a scratching post. "I'll get it."
"Yes, you get it. I'll be right here finishing my breakfast."
I walked to the door and opened it to reveal…
*MUAHAHAHAHA!!! CLIFFHANGER!!! That's what you get for not reviewing. Bleh! :P Deal with it! So, who do you think is at the door? Maybe…Hiei? Muahahaha! You'll just have to wait till the next chapter to find out!
