Pizza and Surprise Happenings

Last time: Logan smirked and then took off, Kina following close at his heels.

Kina followed close behind Logan until his house come into view. With a lunge forward, Kina tackled Logan and sat victoriously on his back. When Laramie walked up he looked down at the two, smiling as the one on the bottom yelled for the one on top to get off and the one on top laughed at him. Laramie solved the problem by picking Kina up by her collar and slinging her over his shoulder so her feet dangled down near his leg. "Put me down!" she demanded.

"Come on Logan," Laramie said, completely ignoring her. Scrambling to his feet, Logan laughed at Kina who shot him a dirty look. Turning towards the house, Laramie went inside, still holding a glowering Kina. Plopping Kina down onto a chair, Laramie turned and dug through his fridge and began cooking dinner. "Logan, show Kina to the bathroom then get some of your clothes for her to wear."

"But dad…" Logan whined.

"No but young man," Laramie said without even looking over at him. Grumbling, Logan grabbed Kina's arm and drug her down the hallway. He pushed her into the bathroom then grabbed some clothes from his room. After taking them from Logan, Kina shut the door and took off her old clothes, tossing them onto the floor and climbing into the shower. A half an hour later she stepped of the bathroom and headed into the kitchen, her sensitive nose telling her that the food was ready. Jumping up onto a chair, she looked at the food set out on the table.

"What is it?" she asked.

"You've never had pizza before?!" Logan asked, surprised. Kina shook her head and reached out, grabbing a slice and putting it on a plate and studying it. Laughing, Logan shook his head. "It's not going to bite you; you're going to bite it." Kina glanced over at Logan then picked up the slice of pizza and took a timid bite. Her eyes lit up and she quickly devoured the rest of the slice and reached for another one. Laramie watched her wolf down the pizza for a bit then reached out and stopped her from taking a fifth piece.

"Don't eat anymore, you're going to get sick," Laramie scolded. "Why are you out here alone?" he asked.

"Cause my parents were in the house," Kina answered, lowering her eyes.

"And what happened to the house?" Laramie questioned.

Kina hesitated and played with her shirt. "It burnt down." She finally whispered.

Laramie's eyes softened. "I'm sorry."

"Yeah, me too," Kina jumped up from her seat and ran outside, sitting down and dangling her feet in a nearby stream. Joining me silently, Logan sat beside me as the sun slowly went down. They sat there for about a half an hour before Laramie called them inside.

"It's time for you two to go to bed," he said.

"But Dad!" Logan whined.

"No buts young man, off to bed with you. And show Kina the guest room," Laramie instructed.

"Yes sir," Logan muttered turning and walking down the hall and brought Kina into one of the rooms. "This is the guest room," he said, flopping on the bed. "You wanna know a secret?" He asked suddenly.

"Sure," Kina responded, sitting Indian-style on the floor.

Glancing around to see if anyone was listening, Logan sat up and leaned forward. "Daddy used to kidnap people," he said in a whisper.

Kina's eyes grew wide. "Really?" she whispered back.

"Yeah, but the last two he kidnapped got away. Their cages are still in the shed. One has a patch on it like it broke, and the other has a funny shaped hole in it!" he said excitedly.

"Logan!! Go to bed!" Laramie hollered from the living room.

"Climb out the window and I'll meet you outside," Logan whispered before scampering out the door. Kina giggled softly then opened the window and climbed out of it, waiting for Logan to arrive. When he did, he took her hand and led her to a small shed in the backyard.

"Here's the one with the hole," Logan said, pulling the blanket off one of the cages.

"Wow!" Kina whispered. "It's a heart!" She fingered the hole and smiled.

"Yeah, and look at this one," Logan said. Glancing over, Kina gasped.

"It looks like it got hit with a sledgehammer!"

"LOGAN, GET YOUR BUTT IN HERE RIGHT NOW!!!!!!!!" Logan and Kina winced at Laramie's tone and darted back inside, using the door. Under his angrily watchful gaze, they slunk back to bed.

The delicious smell of breakfast roused Kina in the morning and she drug herself out of bed; meandering into the kitchen and flopping down in a chair, trying to get her brain into gear. Bounding into the room, Logan jumped into the counter. "Morning!" he said cheerfully.

"Morning, now get off the counter," Laramie said, grabbing the back of Logan's shirt and lowering him to the floor without even looking. Joining Kina at the table, Logan began chattering away while Kina just stared at him, not comprehending a word he said. When Laramie set breakfast out, Kina stared at it for a moment before slowly beginning to eat. "Here," Laramie handed her a soda. "You look like you could use a jump-start," he said in response to her blank look. After Kina finished the soda and breakfast, the caffeine and sugar finally kicked in and she started running around the room along with Logan. "Okay, both of you, outside, now!" Laramie ordered with a smile, pointing out the door. They both raced out the door and played for about two hours before Laramie came out, the poor man. Kina latched onto his legs and Logan jumped onto his back, covering his eyes, making him stumble. All three of them started laughing as Laramie tried to walk around without being able to see where he was going. Finally able to pry Logan's hands off, Laramie spotted two people standing at the corner of his house. "What are you doing here?" he asked in surprise before tripping over Logan, who had dropped off of him and scampered in front of him. Seeing Kishi and Ki, Kina detangled herself from Laramie and hid behind Logan as they approached. Getting to his feet, Laramie straightened his shirt and brushed the dirt off his clothes, trying to regain his dignity. Kishi approached, but Ki hung back a little.

Leaning over, Logan whispered in my ear, "Those are the two that dad caught."

Kishi stood in front of Laramie and motioned for him to kneel down. Laramie obliged hesitantly.

"I want to thank you for your eye opening advice," Kishi began. "It was most helpful." Kishi motioned for Ki to join him and took her hand. "She was quite thrilled, probably nearly fainted when I asked her." At this Kina looked at Laramie in confusion and saw understanding on his face.

"That's wonderful news, I'm glad you finally asked her," Laramie said with a smile.

"Me too," Ki said with a giggle, kissing Kishi on the cheek. Hugging Kishi's arm, Ki turned and faced Laramie.

"That comment I made earlier about you not knowing what love was, I apologize for it. Seeing you have a son proves me wrong," she said.

While Ki was talking, Logan was tensing up beside me and finally burst out, "No need to apologize for being right," he bit out. "I would have met you earlier but I was off visiting my mom. They don't live together because they fight constantly. I wish they would fight less and be my parents more." Kina looked at him in surprise.

"It looked like they got along fine to me," she thought in confusion. Understanding dawned of Ki's face as Laramie's shoulders slumped, but he quickly pulled himself together and invited them in for lunch.

"Not another word on that subject," he told Logan, his voice hoarse. Lunch was very tense and immediately after Logan grabbed Kina's arm.

"Let's get out of here," he whispered, pulling her out of the door. He pulled her into the woods a ways before Kina started pulling back.

"Stop it Logan! You're hurting me!" Dropping her arm, he muttered an apology. "What's wrong Logan? I thought you liked your dad."

Logan sighed. "I do…well…I…I don't know. Him and mom are always fighting over one thing or another and I get fed up with it. Always getting shuffled between two houses. It's like constantly beings at a friends house where you don't know anybody. I wish we could be a family."

"Well, at least you have parents," Kina half-snapped, showing her hands into her pockets and walking faster.

"Kina wait." He grabbed her arm, stopping her. "I'm sorry, I forgot." Kina pulled free and started walking again, swallowing the lump in her throat.

"It doesn't matter," she muttered.

"Yes it does," he insisted, following.

"No it doesn't Logan, the past is the past and the past doesn't matter. Now drop it, you're more annoying then a mosquito." Kina stalked off, leaving a surprised Logan behind. "Boys, they never know when to--" her complaints were cut off as a hands slipped around her waist and mouth, pulling her into the bushes. Kina bit the hand over her mouth and heard her captor curse quietly, but they didn't let go as she hoped. Instead, they punched her in the side, knocking all the air out of her.

"Kina? Kina, I said I was sorry!" Logan called, moving into view on the path in front of her. She tried to yell a warning, but it was muffled and too late anyways.

~~~~~~
Another man grabbed Logan and joined Kina's captor, binding and gagging them. Tossing them over their shoulders, the captors walked through the woods a ways, Logan and Kina trying to escape every second of the way. Finally, they reached a clearing and the two kids were tossed to the ground.
"We gonna kill `em boss?" Kina's captor asked, wrapping his still bleeding hand with a cloth.
"No Natsuke, we'll just beat `em and demand a ransom," a deep voice answered, sending chills down Kina's spine.
"Why, exactly are we doing this again?" a lighter, confused voice belonging to Logan's captor inquired. The apparent leader sighed.
"Listen Ian, you're new so I'll explain this again. Laramie, theses guys dad, killed two of our members three years ago. This is payback. Understand?"
"Yeah," Ian said, looking down at Logan and Kina and frowning, apparently troubled.
"Okay, let's get these guys back to the house," `Boss' instructed. Grabbing me, Ian slung me over my shoulder, Natsuke doing the same for Logan.
Soon they arrived at a house, Ian and Natsuke tossing Logan and Kina on some cots in an upstairs room. After Natsuke left, Ian untied them and removed the gags. "You'd better stay quiet. Natsuke doesn't like kids." Once he had gone, Kina want over to Logan.
"What are we going to do?" she whispered fiercely into his ear.
"I don't know; let me have a look around." Logan got up and quietly walked around the room, looking out the windows and checking the door. "The door's locked and we're on the third floor so we can't jump," he whispered, sitting next to me on his bunk.
"We could try using the blankets and ropes to make a long rope that we can climb down," Kina suggested. Logan nodded in agreement.
"After dinner, if they give us any."
After a very unappetizing meal of something that looked vaguely like grey oatmeal, we began. By the time we were finished, it was dark inside and outside the house. Sliding the window open noiselessly, Kina tossed one end of the `rope' out, tying the other end to one of the cots. Climbing out the window, the duo carefully made their way to the bottom, dropping the five or so feet which the rope didn't cover. Quietly scurrying across the lawn, they disappeared into the forest beyond.
"Almost," Kina muttered as Natsuke tossed her back into the room. Logan simply glared at her the flopped down on his cot, turning his back to her. "I said I was sorry, Logan. How was I supposed to know he was there?!"
"I told you not to stand up!" Logan said, turning over to face me. "Why didn't you listen to me?" Kina remained silent, not finding an answer to his question; except of course pure stubbornness. Laying down on her cot, she faced that wall, remaining awake long after Logan dropped off to sleep. When she finally nodded off, it was a restless sleep, her dreams filled with burning houses, jibes, taunts, and Logan's rebukes.
Waking in the morning to the sound of voices, Kina saw that Logan was still sleeping and crept over to the door to listen in. Ian's voice was the first to be heard. "I put the note under the door. He should be getting it soon."
"Good, now get me one of the kids Natsuke," `Boss' instructed. Kina scrambled back and dived into bed. Just as she stopped moving, the doorknob turned and the door creaked open. Heavy footsteps slowly treaded across the room towards Kina's rigidly still form. A heavy hand roughly grabbed her shirt, lifting her off the bed and into the air, earning a yelp from her. Logan shot up on his bed and dived at Natsuke, hitting him in the side.
"Let her go!" he demanded; only to be roughly knocked onto the floor by a backhanded smack. Ian's warning echoed in Kina's head and she shot a glance at him, pleading his to back off. Logan slowly got to his feet and wiped a small trickle of blood off his lower lip. Natsuke stood there for a second before heading back downstairs, shutting and locking the door behind him. After dumping Kina roughly at `Bosses' feet, Natsuke leaned against the wall, watching.
"Now don't worry there girly, we won't hurt you, permanently," `Boss' said, kicking her in the side. When she tried to move away, Natsuke came forward and grabbed her around the waist, holding her tightly as she struggled.
