Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ A Prayer For The Dying ❯ Chapter 5

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

DarkWater: Kurama's hair's red. Kuwabara's shirt is blue. I don't own Yu Yu Hakusho, so don't sue!

Hiei: Clever.

DarkWater: I guess I am pretty clever. *Smiles confidently*

Kurama: *Asleep in hammock*

DarkWater: Kurama's so cute when he's asleep.

Hiei: Don't start.

DarkWater: The story? *Continues quickly* Cool! Then I've got time to sit here and watch my favorite bishonen be cute and asleep!

Hiei: What about me? The story is about me, you know.

DarkWater: I though you didn't like my stories, Hiei. *Sly smile* So, you DO like getting the girl.....

Hiei: *Blushes maddly* I do not!

Kairi: *Pops in from no where* Of course you like me, Hiei. You just have to admit it! Like you will in this chapter!

Hiei: WHAT?!

DarkWater: Ummm....I gotta go before the Bishonen's Land of Peace turns into my graveyard! *Runs off, laptop in hand*

"Hiei," Kurama began. "You have to admit. It's been nine months since the battle. I doubt she's alive."
"But Koenma never recieved her soul! That means she's still alive!" Hiei snapped back.
"Hiei, some attacks can take souls as well as lives. Besides that, she was a demon."
"But she wasn't completely demon. That means her soul goes to Reikai, and it hasn't!"
"Hiei...."
"Don't 'Hiei' me! I want to know what the hell happened!" When everyone was silent, Hiei stomped out in a fit of rage.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"When will she wake up?"
"She can't." The two girls in white paced back and forth beside the body lying on the bed. "Hell, I'm not sure if she ever will."
"How can you be so sure?"
"Well, the body has a certain ammount of will to live. Seems the poor girl doesn't have any family or anyone who cares. Surely they would have heard about her condition by now and came to visit."
"What can we do to help? Anything?"
"A farmiliar voice might snap her out of it, but it seems she didn't know anyone."
"Maybe they never thought to look here. I mean, it's hundreds of miles away from where she was injured. Her wounds healed, but she never woke up." The nurse reached for a piece of paper on the bedside table. "This is all they found."
The note read, "A Prayer For The Dying
Hiei"
"That's it?" The second nurse stopped. "Hiei? Could that be a family member or friend?"
"You just gave me an idea!" The nurses rushed out of the room to make a phone call.
Soon, it was an article in the paper as a last chance for the young girl. Though it was only a local paper, they had faith. But no one ever came.
"What now?" the first nurse asked, slightly depressed. "No one came."
"I'm sorry, ladies." the doctor said upon entry of the room. "I'm afriad we'll have to disconnect the system." (A/N: Yikes! They can do that in South Carolina! [Which is where I stuck her] Hey! Wait a sec! You can't kill Hiei's love!)
"Can we wait a little longer, doctor?" the second nurse pleaded.
"There has been no response from any family she might have."
"Sir," An aid came into the doorway. "She has a visitor." The nurse seemed silently happy and relieved.
"Send them in. We'll clear out for a while." The doctor and his two assistants left before anyone could arrive. Michelle slowly walked in moments later and sat in a chair next to her bed.
"Baka," he began. "what the hell did you do? You can't die, baka! You're not supposed to go like THIS!"
"Quit yelling, for god's sake." Kairi sat up, holding her hands over her ears. "What happened?"
"How the hell should I know?! But you frikin' alive!"
"Oh," Kairi looked at her hands, legs, and the rest of her body. "Guess I am!"
"Ahh, looks like you're feeling better." the doctor called upon entering the room.
"Yes, I'm fine." Kairi assured.
After a quick physical, they released Kairi from the hospital. They were walking to the airport when Michelle spoke up.
"So, what are ya gonna do now?" she asked.
"Not sure. I can't remember too much." Kairi said, rubbing her temples.
"Well, what's the last thing you remember?"
"Ummm.....I was on top of a building and....."
"You were WHERE?!"
"On top of a building."
"It makes sense now! You tried to commit suicide! I mean, after your mom died, you were depressed, right?"
"I wasn't that bad. I'm not mental, you know. I was in a fight."
"A fight?"
"Yeah, a fight."
"And you got the shit beat out of you?"
"I guess so, but I can't remember."
"Anyone else there?"
"No, I.....YES! There was someone else. Damn it! Who was there?"
"This could take a while. So, it's all bits and pieces." She paused and fished something out of her pocket. "Here, you had this in your hand."
Kairi took it and read to herself. "Hiei! That's who was there!"
"Hiei? Who's that?"
"Michelle, I've got to go! Bye!" Kairi ran down the streets. There was a portal to the Makai nearby. If she traveled through there, she would cut her time by 2/3. 'Hiei, and Uncle Dante, and Suiichi. They've all got to be worried sick! Well, Uncle Dante and maybe Suiichi."
"Wait a sec! I'll come with you!" Michelle followed her until she reached the park. Hey! You can't go to the Makai in your condition!" Kairi's eyes widened. "Yeah, I know all about the Makai, and I'm going with you!"
"You're demon?"
"Yeah, just goes to show you we've all got secrets."
"What are we waiting for?"
"You, dumbass."
"Watch it."
"Kairi! It's you!" her uncle yelled as she walked into the bar. He threw his arms around her in a bear hug.
"Yes, Uncle Dante, I'm alive and well. Now, will you let go, or are you getting a kick out of suffocating me?" Kairi smiled.
"Oh, sorry, kid. I was worried when you didn't come back from vacation!" He let go and spotted Michelle. "Ah, looks like you brought the blonde."
"Hey!" Michelle retorted.
"Well then, let's put on somethin' loud!" Kairi yelled.
"Loud? Sure." Dante called to the DJ something that no one could hear. The DJ nodded and Jennifer Lopez's 'Let's Get Loud' came on. (A/N: I don't like her, but I thought this song would fit.)
"Okay!" Michelle yelled. "And you're coming with me!" She grabbed Kairi's hand and pulled her to the stage.
"Wait a sec! I haven't danced in almost a year!" Kairi tried to pull away, but Michelle's grip only became tighter.
"You will!" She pulled Kairi onto the stage and began to dance.
'Can't beat her, join her.' She looked out at the crowd. "Ladies and gentlemen! Have some fun!" She backed up and began to dance a few feet from Michelle, their move completely in unison.
"So, you haven't forgotten how to dance." Michelle smirked.
"Hell no!" They both did a backhanspring then a back tuck and kept going.
"By the way. You got a place to stay?" Michelle asked, keeping up with the song.
"Of course. I bought an apartment before I left."
"Oh, prepared, prepared!"
'Not hardly.'
"Let's get loud! Let's get loud!" Michelle repeated as they walked to Kairi's apartment. "Turn the music up to hear that sound!"
"I'm going to beat you over the head if you don't shut up." Kairi groaned.
"What? Headache?"
"Like you wouldn't believe."
"You okay?"
"Fine." She yawned. 'Thought I felt Hiei's youki, but my senses might be a bit off. He probably hates me. I think I crushed his pride by saving him. But he didn't hate me before. He even followed me to the U.S.' She mentally shook her head. 'He's so confusing. Wonder if he's alright.' She kept rubbing her temples.
"You sure you're okay?"
Kairi smiled. "Yeah, just thinking."
"So, what about the redhead you told me about?"
"Suiichi?" She looked at her watch. "Probably asleep like normal people. It's two A.M."
"Yeah, let's go so you can take a pain pill or something."
"Oh, guess I missed Christmas." Kairi sighed.
"And your birthday."
"Yeah, I turned seventeen without knowing."
"And Valentines, Easter, the Fourth of July.....anything else?"
"Not off the top of my head. It's just hearts, eggs, and fireworks."
"But I missed the fireworks."
"You and your pyromaniac self."
"And I lost nine months of my life."
"That means only three months until your next Christmas!"
"Yeah, there's always a bright side with you."
"Where ya going?" Michelle called from the tiny bedroom.
"For a walk in the park." Kairi answered.
"Okay. I'm heading home today."
"Alright. Come back to visit." They gave each other a quick hug and went separate ways. 'A month and I haven't gotten out much.' She walked down the stairs with her jacket on for the autumn weather. She stepped outside the building and instantly felt better. Jamming her hands into her blue jean pockets, she headed for the park. The tree leaves changed to bright red, yellows, and oranges. This gave the park a color other than green. "This feels better. Well, I could use a bit of excersise." She looked around for anyone who could be watching before jumping into the trees. She ran, one step for every tree. "I've forgotten how much I love it here in the fall. Well, I should get going. It looks like a storm." She glances at the black clouds and ran home.
Another week had passed quickly. Wet.....so very wet. That was Hiei--a small, black figure of wetness. He sensed Kairi's ki nearby. It was a few blocks away from Kurama's house, but it was closer. He approached and sat in the tree outside one of the windows. He climbed to the window and opened it, going in with intentions of his own.
Kairi walked into the room, ready for bed. Her eyes widened at the fire demon sitting on her bed. His cloak hanging on the back of her desk chair and his boots by the window.
"H-Hiei? What are you doing here?" Kairi studdered.
No response. Hiei just jumped off the bed and began to walk toward her.
"Hiei, you're scaring me. What's wrong?"
Still no answer. She was backed against the wall.
Kairi didn't say anything either. Hiei just kept coming closer. She inwardly sighed. 'And here I though he hated me. Damn, I do have a bad judge of character.' She waited until he got closer and tapped his nose saying, "You want it, you've got to work for it. You're it."
Hiei smirked. This was going to be fun.
Kairi jumped out the window before Hiei could react. She didn't mind that she was in flanel pants and an old t-shirt. 'Catch as catch can.' She ran into the park, not knowing what happened to Hiei. Suddenly, the trees around her came out of the ground and formed a ring out her. Before she knew it, Hiei was in her face and tapped her nose just as she had done to him.
"I caught you."
"But you cheated."
"Oh, really?"
"Yes, really."
"All's fair in love and war."
"And where did you pick up a ningen saying like that?"
"Kurama said it."
"Kurama?"
"Suiichi, whatever you call him." He paused briefly. "And you, you've got a problem with running off."
"And your point is....?"
"I don't want anyone else to take you."
"Now aren't you so caring all of a sudden?"
"I just don't want any bastard demons taking you."
"Like I said, you care." She paused. "Now, are we going back or not?"
Kairi's POV
I woke up late that morning. The sun was already up and Hiei still had his arms around my waist. I didn't mind except for the wound on my neck. That was one hell of a love bite.
"And you said I was a late sleeper." Hiei said.
"I guess so." I yawned. I guess he didn't want to wake me up. He still didn't smile very often. Well, only once so far. I yawned again as the doorbell rang. I left Hiei on the bed and walked to the door. I opened it, revealing the all too farmiliar redhead. "Kurama? What are you doing here?" I caught sight of the two behind him. They looked like punks to me.
"So, you are alive. These two are Yusuke and Kuwabara. Yusuke, Kuwabara, this is Kairi." Kurama smiled at me.
"It's a pleasure." I half-lied.
"Wow, that's one nasty misquito bite." The orange-haired one had caught sight of my neck.
"Yeah, misquito bite." I replied, lying, of course. Kurama knew what it meant and gave me a sly smile. "Hentai." I whispered so only he could hear. "Ummm, how did you know I was here?"
"We were looking for the shrimp." the orange-haired one said.
"What does Koenma want now?" Hiei appeared behind me. Thank God he thought of getting his cloak and boots back on.
"What does he always want?" Kurama said.
"For us to do something stupid." Hiei was Reikai Tantei? That was s shock. He looked at me without the others noticing. I looked back, telling him with my expression that he could go. He was checking with me? That was new, too.
"Well?" Yusuke asked impatiently.
"I'm coming already." And Hiei stepped out with that.
After he left, I got dressed and ready. Now, what was I going to do with myself for the rest of the day?
First, a bit a shopping. Then, called Michelle. After that, ate. Now, playing guitar.
I sat playing my guitar. (A/N: How I love my guitar!) I wish Hiei hadn't had to go on that mission. I finished a song just as my window flew open. A girl in a pink kimono and riding on an oar flew into my room.
"Whoa. Where'd you come from?" I asked.
"I need you to come with me right now!" She was looking a bit cut up and slightly bloody.
"Wait! Why?"
"No time to explain! You have to come with me now! Or they're all going to be killed!"
"You lost me, fairygirl."
"You're Kairi, right?"
I nodded.
"Then grab on!"
I obeyed and grabbed the end of her oar. She flew outside the window with me still attached and started off to who knew where.
"Having fun?! How does it feel to be at the other end?!" Kairi's sister yelled. "It's not so easy to kill me!"
"Not easy to shut you up, either." Yusuke mockingly held his hands over his ears.
"Any suggestions?" Kuwabara asked.
"How should I know?! I already shot her with the Spirit Gun twice!"
"That's right! I'll never die!" Kairi's sister yelled again. She suddenly screamed and doubled over.
"Time to cut your lifeline.....bitch." Kairi told her through telepathy.
"You! But you're dead!"
"Not hardly, but you will be."
"No! You stay away from there!"
"Has she gone crazy or what?" Yusuke questioned.
"No," Kurama began. "It makes sense now."
"What makes sense?"
"Kairi's sister must have the power of darkness somewhere in her. That would give her a shadow self. To kill the demon, the shadow must be dead. Very few know how to do this."
"And Kairi does."
"You little! I won't let you get away with this!" Kairi's sister ran off into the forest. "I'll get you!"
"Damn, she's fast!" And the four followed.
"Hurry! She's coming closer!" Botan yelled.
"Yeah, I know!" Kairi yelled back.
"But if she has a shadow self, doesn't that mean you have one? That would make you just as strong as her!"
"No, I don't have one."
"Wait, you don't?"
"No! I merged with my years ago."
"Kairi! Die!" her sister yelled, running onto the scene.
"Botan, get behind me!"
"But I....."
"Just do it!" Botan jumped behind Kairi who swung around to face her sister.
"You've played with my plans long enough!"
"Natsu, you were always so ill-tempered. You need to loosen up and have a bit of fun once and a while." Kairi said calmly.
"You've got a lot of courage for someone who's going into a fight they can't win!"
"Botan, finish it. I'll hold her off."
"Right!" Botan jumped right back to work in finishing the puzzle in the ground.
"And then, all you have to do it smash it."
"Alright!"
"You're talking about it like you're going to finish the puzzle. It's sad, really it is."
Kairi smirked.
"You don't say much for someone who's going to be dead soon."
"I'd like to see you try."
Natsu held out her arms and focused her ki. "Tie Curse!" Kairi found herself wrapped in bands of ki but made no attempt to get free. "Now, I'll kill you. Shi ne, little sister."
I didn't move. I let Natsu hit me over and over again. I could break her Tie Curse with a bit of strength, but I knew she wouldn't try to kill me if I wasn't a threat. If I showed my strength by escaping, she'd go all out and kill me and Botan.
"You always were fun to hit." Natsu mocked, hitting me again. This was a lot harder than I had expected, and I was sent a few yards back. Alright, time to break this curse. I concentrated, instantly breaking her weak curse. She jumped forward, forcing us into close combat. She tried to hit me, but I was always the speed. She was the strength. I landed a few decent hits, and a stream of blood trickled from the corner of her mouth. This was mainly because I was calm in this fight. I wasn't angry; I just wanted her dead.
"Bingo!" I heard Botan yell in victory.
"Good! Now, smash it!" I ordered, still fighting my sister. Botan held it above her head and slammed it down as hard as she could against a rock. I snapped in half.
"Bitch!" Natsu yelled. Her anger gave her a boost of power to her punch and sent me flying into a tree trunk. I easily jumped to my feet with blood streaming from my forehead. I couldn't help but laugh to myself. "You're not supposed to laugh!"
"And you're not supposed to be an ass." I mocked. Oh was she ever pissed. She charged again, but stopped. I saw the katana pierce through her back and come straight through to her stomach. I smiled, and Hiei smiled secretivly back to me.
Hiei: Are you finished?
DarkWater: Hell no! I just didn't want to leave me fans hanging with another cliffie. I promise that I will have more chapters! But I am so pissed!
Hiei: What is it now?
DarkWater: I've only gotten five reviews! Come on people! Work with me here! It's hard writing with minimal support! Anyway, it'll take at least ten reviews total to get my next chapter anywhere near the net! They can't be the same people over and over again either! Sorry, but I've got school, cross country, gymnastics, homework and more.....well, shit to put it simply.
Hiei: But you'll keep writing?
DarkWater: Hell yes! Anyway, I've got an idea for another fic staring.....
Hiei: Hell no!
DarkWater: HIEI!
Hiei: Why not Kurama?! He's your favorite!
DarkWater: Because, my naive friend, you have problems. You're so much easier to work with! Look for my next story sometime. It's not up or even started, but I think I can get a first chapter up to catch your interest. Ja ne!
