Chapter 2: Encounter, the “Accidental”Meeting
*****Sabrina's POV***** [A/N: All of it will be in her POV for this chapter ^^;;;]
*They all laughed at me again……I guess I should be used to that by now, what with all my late arrivals recently…..oh well….I really shouldn't let it get to me, since a lot of people like me this way…..*
All of a sudden, I was poked hard on the arm, causing me to jump up in my seat. “Ow!!!!! What the…..!!!” I screeched, gaining stares from everyone else in the room.
“Are you done zoning out now, Kakeru-chan?” Talim chuckled softly. [A/N: Ok.....my character's name is Sabrina. She just prefers to be called Kakeru. The reason for the name will be explained in greater detail later in the story. So her friends will always call her Kakeru, Kakeru-chan or K-chan.]
“You always become so oblivious to everything when you do that!” chirped Ashura.
“Yeah, yeah, whatever.” was all I could manage to get out in my embarrassment.
Talim poked me on the arm again. “So, why were you almost late again this morning? Hmmmm?”
I tilted my head playfully and grinned at her. “Oh, you know me! I was just staring into nothing, like always!”
“Aw....” Ashura whined. “That's supposed to be my job!!!!”. I smiled and lightly shook my head.
I looked around the room, taking in the normal homeroom scene: friends talking back and forth, the fangirls talking about their latest crush......very normal things in a life that was just as normal. I glanced over at my 2 best friends, Ashura-chan and Talim-chan, and smiled. They were having their usual poking competition. It was very amusing to watch, actually, since they were always so serious about it. Talim's golden eyes stared intently into Ashura's emerald green ones, both ready to strike at the other's slightest movement. It felt like one of the showdowns you see in those old western movies. Talim brushed a lock of long, ocean blue hair out of her face, as Ashura ran her right hand through her long violet hair. The competition was just about to get under way.....
“All right class!!!!!! Settle down, please, everyone!!! Back to your seats!!!!!” our homeroom teacher yelled. Everyone just grumbled at her. Ashura & Talim pouted at having their fun interrupted, while I just sat up straight and sighed quietly. The class whispered back and forth while she took attendance.
After what seemed like forever, the bell rang, signaling the end of homeroom and the start of our next class. Everyone hurried out the door, Ashura, Talim and I bringing up the rear. The three of us walked down the crowded hall in search of our next class. Then Ashura spoke up.
“Hey, Kakeru-chan......where are we going, anyway?” she asked curiously. A sly grin played across my face.
“Hmm......I think our first class is.....Biochemistry.....” Talim said thoughtfully.
“You bet!!!” I exclaimed “I'm surprised you guys figured it out without my help, for a change.”
“Hey!!!!” they screamed in unison. I giggled softly and quickened my pace towards our lab at the end of the hall, the two of them at my heels, still huffy over my comment.
Upon entering, Ashura, Talim & I took our seats in the far back of the room. The lab was set up in 3 rows of 4 desks each and each desk holds 2 people, in this case, you and your lab partner. I sat at the last table in the middle row with Ashura. Talim was in the desk to our left, partnered up with another one of our classmates. The room was filled with many glass beakers and potted plants, flowers and such. I thought of it as a very pleasant environment to be in, not to mention the fact that Biochemistry was one of my favorite classes. I took a look around and noticed that all the other girls in our class were giggling and swooning over a boy with bright red hair, which was greatly complemented by the magenta school uniform.
Talim leaned over towards me. “Looks like all the girls are drooling over Shuichi again.” she whispered as she gave a disgusted glance at the preppy, starry-eyed girls.
“I don't get it….I really don't understand why they like him so much!” Ashura complained as she looked at him.
“What do you guys expect? He is the most popular boy in school, after all, as well as one of the best looking and the smartest. Girls would give anything to even have so much as a one-on-one conversation with him!” I said in a manner-of-factly voice.
“Even you, K-chan?” Talim teased.
“Shut up, Talim!”
“So….I was right, was I?” She winked knowingly.
At that exact moment, the bell rang and the teacher walked in. All I could think was thank Kami he came in when he did. I didn't want to try and answer that, since I really had no good answer to give her.
*It should make no difference to me if I talk to him……but then I really want to...for some reason.....*
“Alright, konnichiwa everyone!” our science teacher shouted. “Let's start off this morning by assigning everyone new seats and lab partners!”
The whole class rolled their eyes and groaned their disapproval to this idea, but our biochemistry teacher liked to pull us out of our “comfort zone” every now and then.
*This is no big deal! I mean, come on, is a little change going to kill them or something? What's the worst that could happen?*
“Yes, I know you don't want to, but we're going to change seats anyway. In the front desk to my left will be…..Ms. Talim Tikal and Ms. Ashura Kattsu.”
“Yay!!!!!” Talim and Ashura both screamed, jumping up and down excitedly. They trotted over to their table and sat down.
“The desk right here in front of me will consist of Mr. Shuichi Minamino……”
Shuichi stood up, brushed his bright crimson bangs out of his eyes, walked coolly up to the table and took his seat. All of the girls were starry-eyed and giggling, hoping that they would end up being paired up with him. Ashura and Talim both rolled their eyes at the drooling girls, then went back to talking. Even I was on the edge of my seat, nervous and pensive about whom is partner would be.
*There's a knot in my stomach…..I have the strangest feeling that it's going to be m…*
“Ah, yes! And his partner will be Ms. Sabrina Hino!”
Everyone turned to look at me as I stood up, grabbed my books and slowly walked down to the front of the room. I looked over at Shuichi and took my seat next to him. All of Shuichi's fan girls growled angrily at me, sending me death glares.
“Hello Sabrina.”
“H-h-hi…..Shuichi…” was my stammered reply. I put my hand to my cheeks and realized they were warm.
*Why am I blushing!? There is no reason for me to! And why is my heart pounding so hard!?*
Shuichi broke the uncomfortable silence between us. “I'm sure it'll be a pleasure to work with a science savvy person such as you.”
He seemed so calm and confident, not a nervous wreck like me. When I realized how odd I was acting, I perked up and attempted to act like nothing was bothering me.
“No, I should be saying the same to you. You're much better in biochemistry than I am!”
“I'm not better by much, actually. You're average is only under mine by a few points…..”
I shook my head and continued with my compliments.
“But you're still better! It's truly an honor to be able to work with you, Shuichi. Maybe you could teach me a thing or two…..?” I inquired, giving him one of my sweetest smiles.
I could see him blushing slightly, but he covered it up with a quick nod of his head and a small smile. “Arigatou. I can tell that we'll make a great team.”
While we were talking, our teacher finished assigning everyone their new seats. “Ok class, now that that is done, let's start on today's lab lesson. Ms. Tikal, Ms. Kattsu, pay attention!!”
Talim and Ashura stopped talking and tried to look like they were paying attention. “Yes sir!”
“Good. Now then, let us begin the lab experiment. I've placed all the necessary ingredients on your desks. Follow the instructions and everything should go fine. And just for your own safety, always wear the goggles and be very careful with the chemicals.” our teacher instructed.
“Yes, sensei.” everyone said in unison.
I picked up the clear lab goggles, put them on and picked up the instruction sheet. I held it up so that both Shuichi and I could see it and read it aloud.
“You have been given six unknown chemicals labeled A, B, C, D, E and F. Carefully mix these different chemicals together two at a time and figure out what each of the chemicals are.”
Further down the paper there was a small note. “WARNING: Whatever you do, do not mix chemical B and chemical E together!” I gave a worried glance over toward Ashura and Talim, who were staring in wonder at the beakers of different colored chemicals.
*I sure hope they don't do anything stupid without me to help them.*
“Is something wrong Sabrina?” Shuichi asked.
“Oh, no, of course not. I guess I'm just a bit worried about my friends, that's all. To tell you the truth, they're really not that good with this subject.”
“Don't worry, I'm sure they'll be just fine. Now, let's begin. Perhaps we should attempt to mix A and B together first. What do you think?” Shuichi smiled.
“Sure, why not!” I stated enthusiastically. No matter how enthusiastic I sounded, I was still a bit worried about my friends.
*I'm getting one of those feelings again......like something bad is going to happen...*
“Um....Sabrina...?”
“Oh, sorry!” I blushed. “Let's get to it, then.”
We began mixing the different chemicals together, being very careful about how much of each we added. It didn't take us very long to discover what each chemical was and record it down into our notes with descriptions of the properties for each one. Talim and Ashura were still within my earshot, so I could hear them while we were doing our work.
“Hmm….hey Talim, oh almighty smart person!...What were we supposed to do again?”
“You know, I have no idea. I think we're supposed to try and mix them together or something like that.”
“Oooo…this one is sooooo pretty!!! Purple!!!!!!!”
“Hn. I like the green one….it's all green and.....yeah…Oh, look! Mine has the letter “E” on it!”
“Well….mine has the letter “B” on it, somehow making it better than yours because it's…um….better!”
“Hey, Ashura-chan! If we mix the two together, it will be even better!”
“Ok, let's do it then!!! Weeeee!!! I'll put my purple B in here.....”
“And now I'll add my green E!!!”
I smiled. “It sounds like they're doing alright on their own. I'm glad.”
“I told you that you had no reason to worry.”
“Yeah, I guess you were right. As long as they don't mix....”
Shuichi and I both looked at each other and suddenly realized what the two of them were about to do.
“Talim, Ashura, don't mix those two together!!!!!!!” we yelled in unison.
They hadn't heard us in time. There was a deafening noise and then the room filled with smoke. I was blown backwards by the slight explosion and braced myself to fall to the ground. However, I didn't fall like I had expected to. I couldn't see who it was with all the smoke in the room, but whoever it was caught me gently in their arms and quickly guided me out into the hallway. All I remember after that were those strong arms, still holding me, and then closing my eyes and slipping into unconsciousness.
