Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ A Sick Day ❯ A sick day ( Chapter 1 )
[ P - Pre-Teen ]
A loud sneeze echoed through the room followed by a sniff.
“You can't go to school like that.” Stated Yusuke, who was sitting on heavily blanketed bed. He was looking at the girl before him; her black hair was matted in an untidy bun flattened against the back of her head. Her usually lively, icy blue eyes were now a dull, tired looking gray and her nose looked like a red Christmas ball compared to her flushed face.
“But Yusuke!” She whined in a high-pitched voice, despite the fact that the higher it's tone increased, the more is started to crack. A thermometer being stuck into her mouth silenced the ill girl and her whining voice
“No buts, Heather. You are staying home and we are all going to get you better.” Yusuke flashed her a small, goofy grin. “I don't think that I could last you being this whiney for more then an hour, let alone a day.” Heather glared at him and then playfully punched him before he stood up and walked for the door. With this chance, she attempted to take the stick out of her mouth.
“Don't you dare…” Instantly she stopped her movements and then looked up innoccently to see Yusuke sternly looking at her.
“Fwine!” Her voice was a bit muffled from the stuffy-ness of her nose and then thermometer coming from her mouth. Yusuke left the room and closed the door behind him. The room was so silent now, with only one person in the room, so Heather flopped back on the pillow and stared up at the ceiling while rubbing her stuffed up nose.
`Great, I get a cold and now their going to take care of me…Heather, get ready for a day of Hell…and for a day of being poisoned…maybe…' She laid like that for a while.
Five minuets after Yusuke had exited the room, he returned and took the thermometer away only to tell Heather the news she already knew.
“You have a fever.” He stated simply. If Heather were standing she would have fallen over from Yusuke's stupidity.
“Thank you Mr. Stated the Obvious!” She said but had strained her voice too much and began to cough.
“Nice one Heather…I'll get you some water…” And with that in mind, he got up and left with the thermometer in hand.
It took a few minuets, and after sitting up, her coughing fit stopped and she snatched a tissue from the nightstand then began to blow her nose.
“Well Yusuke, I guess you were right…She does looks rather…”
“A mess?” Heather looked over at the door and saw Kurama and, the oh so familiar, Yusuke walking into the room.
“That not nice…” Heather sniffled after she spoke and tossed the tissue into the near by trashcan.
“But it's true and you know it!” Yusuke ruffled the top of her head and she batted at his hand until he stopped.
“So you think she'll be sick for long?”
“Yusuke, I can't tell how long she will be sick…it may only be for a day from the looks of things though.” Both Heather and Yusuke smiled at the thought of only her being sick for a day as Heather scanned them both over with her eyes.
“What?” Yusuke asked looking at her with a small glare.
“Where's the water you were getting?” She asked in a childish voice. Yusuke's eyes widened but then he started to inch for the door.
“Oh that…I guess I got sidetracked after Kurama got here…” He muttered and then left the room.
“He likes to forget things…I swear he has only one brain cell or something…” she sighed and threw the blankets off of her but instantly regretted it as she was welcomed by the cold air that surrounded her.
“You really should stay in bed…”
“Naw! I don't trust Yusuke trying to get me water…he might put rat poisoning or something like a drain cleaner in it…” She walked for the door and was followed by Kurama.
“I would suspect you to say something like that about Hiei.” Kurama commented with a slight chuckle as they entered the Kitchen. New guests where in the house, Kuwabara being the one raiding the refrigerator and Hiei, who was leaning against the wall while Yusuke was filling up a glass of water at the sink.
“So we get to miss school to watch over her? Sweet!” Kuwabara said as he closed the fridge and had a can of soda clutched in his hands.
“Yeah! And Keiko can't freak at me for not being there!” Yusuke said, obviously they had no idea that she and Kurama where standing in the doorway. Heather glared at the two of them.
`So, they think that me being sick is good? All because it gives them an excuse to get out of school wow, now I feel so used…' Before either boy could even notice the two of them in the doorway to the kitchen, they both received a smack on the head.
“Hey! What was that for?” They both shouted at the same time while Heather snatched the glass of water from Yusuke's hand and sat herself down on the floor next to Hiei.
“I believe you were talking about her only a few moments ago.” Kurama mentioned and Kuwabara started to drink his soda while Yusuke smiled nervously.
“Oh that,” He laughed nervously, “we were only joking Heath!”
“Right…whatever…” Heather said in an emotionless voice and started to chug down the water so that it could help with her aching throat.
“Hn.” Hiei looked down at her and then looked up at Yusuke with a small glare that made him take a few steps back.
“Hey watch this!” Kuwabara shouted as he finished with his can of soda, held it tightly in his hand, braised himself, and then crushed the can right against his skull. Instantly the can shrunk and he gave a muscle man pose.
“I know you all liked that, come on tell me how cool that was.” Yusuke sweat dropped, as did Kurama. Heather covered her mouth and sneezed a few times.
“Hn, at least your head was useful for something.” Hiei commented in a calm voice. Only a few seconds after that Kuwabara was in Hiei face until Heather, the only one not trying to laugh, stepped in between them.
“Alright shut up!” She shouted but this proved to be a bad thing to do because right away she started to cough and no matter how hard she tried to stop she just couldn't.
“Woah…” Kuwabara said while he took her glass from the floor and walked over to the sink starting to fill it up with water. Hiei looked at her and hesitantly, as though not sure if it was the right thing to do, he patted her back a few times. This proved to help as Yusuke grabbed the cup away from Kuwabara and handed it to her. At first she started to take small sips while Hiei rubbed her back with a small blush staining his cheeks and, in time, she calmed down.
“Danke…” She mumbled as Kurama took the glass from her.
“Your welcome…how about we go and watch from TV or a movie…you know something…”
“Where you won't have a coughing fit.” Kuwabarafinished and they all agreed.
After getting into the living room and sitting around Yusuke sorted through the movies leaving the choice up to Heather. Her eyes seemed to sparkle as she pointed to a certain DVD.
“Is there a reason you look…extremely happy?” Kuwabara asked and she, despite her throbbing head, nodded it vigorously. Her smile was huge and looked as though she was excited for whatever movie she had chosen.
“Should we be scared?” Kuwabara asked from his seat on the floor in front of the couch. He looked at the DVD cover in Yusuke's hands to see that is read `The Crow'in a spcieal font that was colored red.
“Maybe…” Heather said right before she sniffled but then went to the innocent look.
“That's never good…” Yusuke said as he popped the DVD in the player and pressed the play button. He walked over and sat on the couch and spread out so he was lying down. Kurama shifted in his spot on the chair that he was seated in while Heather leaned back against the wall under the window seat where Hiei was.
As the movie played on, the main character came up on the screen and Heather let out a loud, high pitched squeak causing every one to look at her.
“What was that?”
“That sounded like a squeak…” Kurama commented
“That was me, now shhh! Hot, sexy Brandon Lee on the TV…” Her eyes were so focused on the TV that no one even dared to talk and ask questions so they all just decided to watch the entertainment.
The movie played out and every time any one made any sort of noise, no matter what it was, Heather was sure to show them her wrath with a glare, growl, or even, at times, a slap over the head. Soon the motion picture was over, and for the ill one in the room, it was over all too soon.
“Aww…it's over…” She sniffled in a sad way, though the sniffle was not fake or in vein seeing as she really and truly needed a tissue but was too lazy to get up herself and get one.
“Next time we watch a movie that you obsessed with the actor, warn us.” Yusuke said rubbing the top of his head, which had a small bump on it.
“Um…otay!” She said and her voice cracked at the end from her barely being able to talk now from so much squeaking at the hotness of the main character and speaking the lines of the movie as they were said on the screen.
“Hn, you should have learned from the third time that you had uttered a word that she was always going to hit you.” Hiei said with a small smirk and looked at Yusuke who was glaring at him.
Heather looked up at Hiei and nodded her head in agreement. “Even I would have figured that I me no know nothing!” She smiled in a childish way while every one nearly feel from their seats.
“That's always nice to say about your self, Heather.” Kurama said in a sarcastic voice.
“Heather knows that!” She said in a happy voice.
Yusuke leaned over towards Kuwabara, “She's lost it…” he whispered and Heather looked at him.
“Heather says that that was not nice to say…”
“It's true though.” Kuwabara agreed and they all looked at her.
“Nope not uh…nope…” Heather shook her head slowly while looking at the boys who where nodding their heads.
After the little argument that had consisted of what was nice to say and what wasn't, they all decided that letting Heather rest would be a good idea, so they escorted her to her room and tucked her in.
“Um guys?” She asked as they all started to leave the room while she snuggled under the nice, warm safety of her blankets. Kurama turned around first followed by every one else.
“Yes, what is it Heather?” He asked and they all noticed the mischievous grin that was on her face.
“ I don't trust that face…” Yusuke said with a skeptical look.
“I agree with Urameshi for once…”
“Can I have a bed time story?” She asked in a polite, adorable, child-like voice. All of them crashed to the floor in a group anime fall from the question.
“Why?” Yusuke shouted as he stood up from the floor.
“I just want a little story to help me go to sleep…” She muttered, “But if you guys,” she sniffled, “don't want to…” Her eyes became huge, puppy dog eyes and they all looked at her, facial expressions softening, well, all but Hiei's whose face remained to have its normal facial expression on it.
“Well I guess we could…” Kurama caved in and Heather squeaked mentally.
“Kurama how can you say that?!” Both Yusuke and Kuwabara shouted in unison.
“You want her to sleep correct?” He asked and they both thought about it a moment before sighing in defeat.
“Yippie!”
“You three can waste your time doing that…I will sit and watch.” Hiei stated and walked over sitting on the edge of the bed beside Heather.
Kurama sighed, “I suppose that will be alright…” and with that they started to pick a story to retell, though they ended up telling the story Nightmare Before Christmas because of the large demand that came from Heather.
“Alright Once upon a time, A long time ago…” And so it began. They had trouble at times remembering parts of the story in their order but so it was told. It was rather amusing to watch as Kurama, Yusuke, and Kuwabara started to get into the story and began to act it out with voices, cruddy props, and body actions. They switched off character parts and Heather enjoyed to watching them sing, try not to laugh at each other because of how big of fools they were being, and dance around the room. Yusuke's facial expressions seemed to be the more humorous and Kuwabara tripping over his feet was the funniest of all actions.
It had been almost an hour of their theatre and a wide smirk was playing on Hiei's face as Kurama finished up the story while him and Yusuke sang the final song.
“The end!” Kuwabara shouted in a triumphant way as him, Kurama, and Yusuke took a final bow.
“Well Heather what did you think?” Yusuke asked and all eyes turned to her. Though they all silenced themselves when they noticed her eyes were closed, her breathing was rather slow, and she had a small, content and calm smile on her face.
“Come on…” Kurama whispered as Hiei, a bit reluctantly stood up and tucked her back in and grabbed a small Cat stuffed animal from the pillow beside her. Instantly she hugged the black, stitched together cat and cuddled it close as they all left the room. As soon as they shut the door though, Hiei sneezed making all eyes go on him.
“Hiei, did we catch a cold?” Yusuke asked in a teasing but slightly serious voice. That, folks, was the beginning of a long argument between them all that ended in a death threat from Hiei. Of course he hadn't caught Heather's weak Human cold…or did he?
(A.N. Well that's it. It's a one-shot…maybe just maybe I will make another one but I am doubting it… ^^ so bai bai every one! )
