Part Four

Hiei opened his eyes and looked up at the other man. 'What do you mean? I wanted the sword and knew you'd be able to get it. Simple as that.'

Kurama shook his head. 'You could have broken into that vault yourself. You didn't need me or that imbecile you had with you. If the sword was all you were after, why have us along? You were never exactly a team player.'

Hiei looked away, frustrated that he couldn't turn his head from Kurama's steady gaze. Deep down, he knew it was only a matter of time before his actions were
questioned. It had been, after all, the first time he had ever asked for help. But he didn't regret it. Ultimately, he had gotten what he had wanted.

'It was the mirror, wasn't it?' Kurama thought with sudden understanding. 'You were never after the sword!'

'I did want that sword,' Hiei thought defensively. Then added, 'But I also wanted you to have the mirror. I just didn't expect you to waste a perfectly good wish on a miserable human!'

'That human was my mother,' Kurama said cooly.

'The fox demon has no mother!' Hiei snapped.

The tension hung thick between the two. Around them, the forest teemed with night sounds. But inside the camoflaged house of vines, not even a thought was heard by the other.

"Hiei," Kurama whispered finally. "What wish did you expect me to make?"

"Does it matter?" he growled back.

"Not now," he admitted, "but I'm still curious."

"Fine!" Hiei snapped and turned his head toward Kurama. The fact that movement was finally being restored to his muscles was lost in his haze of resentment. "You were supposed to wish that your demon form be returned to you so you could come back to the spirit world once more! You could have ruled legions of demons, but you threw it all away! Now look at you! A demon in a human body, ruled by human emotions! Maybe I should have just left you to rot in the living world after all!"

Kurama stared, wide eyed, at Hiei's admission. He had suspected Hiei's wish for him to return to full demon form, but hadn't realized the extent of his desire. Had he expected to become a powerful leader in the demon fox's army? Or was there another reason behind Hiei's passionate speech?

"I see," Kurama said shortly. He lay back and tucked his hands behind his head, watching the stars twinkle overhead. Slowly, the night sounds returned after being silenced by Hiei's outburst.

Hiei turned his head back and forth, stretching the sore muscles of his neck. He attempted to move his other body parts, but they still lay, lifeless and numb, on the ground where Kurama had set them. With a sigh, he closed his eyes and tried to clear his mind for sleep. Since there was nothing he could do, he would let Kurama stay awake to defend their tiny fortress of flowers.

'Hiei?'

Kurama's thought invaded his brain like a knife. Hiei tried to ignore it and block it out, but it was insistant and broke through all his attempts. Finally, he had to relent. 'What!' he sent back, the thought so loud in Kurama's head that it made him wince.

'Does this human body really disgust you that much?'
