Part Six

Kurama sat up and looked down at Hiei's dark shape. The faint light from the moon shone off the whites of Hiei's eyes, making the pupils bottomless pits. Kurama could sense only the truth from the other demon, and an enormous weight lifted from his heart. Since his memory of Hiei had returned, clear and sharp, he had worried that Hiei bore a grudge against him for that time so long ago. Now he understood that his human emotions were to blame for his fear of rejection, not anything Hiei had said or done.

"That means a lot to me to hear you say that, Hiei," Kurama said softly.

Hiei sighed. "There's that weak human side again."

"Yes," Kurama agreed. "I am not the strong demon I once was. It seems as if the tables have turned and put you in the position of power. Especially since you obtained the Jagan eye."

Hiei shook his head. "I never wanted to be more powerful than you, Kurama. I only wished to prove that I deserved to be worthy of you." He gave a small grin before adding, "Although I must admit I did imagine being the dominant one for a change."

Kurama gave a light chuckle and smiled down at him playfully. "So, 'dominant one', what would you command of me?"

"Well ..." Hiei seemed to consider for a few seconds, "I am getting cold lying here on the ground."

Without comment, Kurama removed his belt and jacket. He lay close next to Hiei and draped the warm jacket over both of them, just as Hiei used to do for Yoko Kurama. With his cheek resting on Hiei's shoulder, Kurama lay his hand over Hiei's heart. The steady beat was both calming and exciting. With Hiei's current condition, Kurama was content to just close his eyes and feel the gentle thumping against his fingertips. There would be other opportunities for other things. Before he realized it, he had slipped into the most peaceful sleep he had experienced in quite some time.

An hour after Kurama fell asleep, feeling began to return to Hiei's arms. Unlike his neck, the pain was excruciating. He knew that by keeping the muscles moving he would able to tolerate it better, but one arm was trapped under Kurama and he would willingly cut it off before disturbing him.

Instead, he ignored that arm as best he could and flexed the other by running his hand lightly up and down Kurama's arm. He gritted his teeth against the sharp stabs of pain like thousands of needles being dug into his muscles as the nerves awakened. By the time the first rays of dawn light filtered through their leafy hiding spot, the pain had abated. He worried, though, that there was still no feeling below his chest.
