Yukimura Keiko was a girl with certain expectations in life. When Yusuke called her to talk, she expected for him to meet her alone. When she arrived, however, she saw him standing outside the restaurant flanked by Hiei and Kurama. She paused, trying to understand why he was not alone. The three walked up to her where she stood, Yusuke asking, “Do you mind if we go for a walk in the park?”
She looked at him carefully. He actually appeared nervous, something she had never seen before from him. Frowning, she replied, “Yeah, I guess. What's bothering you, Yusuke?” She refrained from asking about the presence of the two demons for now.
“It's kinda hard to explain, and I don't want you to get upset,” the dark haired boy murmured as they walked, rubbing his hands together in an agitated motion. Keiko noticed the worried look that Kurama gave the boy, and this further confused her.
“Why would I get upset?” she asked, trying to keep her voice neutral.
Instead of answering, he walked on, eyes locked on the ground just ahead of his feet. She could see that he had begun to chew on his lower lip. `What's got him so worked up?' she wondered. He turned off the path and entered a small cluster of trees. She followed him, “Yusuke?”
He looked at her, his expression pained, his hands clasped before him. “Keiko, I have something I want to tell you, but it's kinda difficult to figure out how to say it. I don't want you to hate me or anything like that.”
“Why would I hate you, Yusuke? We've been friends forever, you should know me better than that.”
Yusuke began to pace the small area between the trees. Hiei and Kurama stood near where they had entered the trees and Keiko stood near the center, backing up slightly to allow Yusuke room to pace. He looked to be deep in thought as he walked. With a glance at the two demons, he began, “What would you say if I told you Hiei and Kurama were in a relationship?”
The startled girl looked over at the two demons, who nodded in confirmation. Her sharp mind turned quickly. “Why are you telling me this, Yusuke?”
“Please, Keiko, could you answer the question.” Anxiety was clearly evident on the boy's face.
“I suppose if they're happy, then that's what matters. Why are you telling me this?”
“What …what would you say if….if I told you…..that…well…they asked me to be in a relationship with them?”
Keiko felt as if the bottom had been torn from her world. “Urameshi Yusuke, that is not funny.” She had expectations from life, and one of those was that she and Yusuke would one day become more than friends.
“I'm not trying to be funny,” he answered.
Without actual thought as to what she was doing, the girl walked over to the tantei and slapped him hard enough to cause him to hit the ground. Before she was aware of anything else, she was pinned to a tree by an enraged koorime who had a katana to her throat and Kurama had moved to kneel next to Yusuke. The kitsune looked at the fire demon, “Hiei…” A glance from the red eyed demon stopped him from going further.
“Onna, I suggest you never do that again, do you understand?” Hiei snarled.
Keiko's eyes were wide, full of fear as she stared into the red eyes before her. Silently she nodded. Hiei continued, “I don't understand why, but he wanted to tell you and the baka about us. It has been an extremely difficult day for him and us. I do not want him to have to choose between us and you. Do not make this any harder than it need be, girl.”
She nodded, “I….is it…can I ask a couple of questions, Hiei?” The petite demon withdrew his katana, but continued to hold the girl to the tree. “Why is it the three of you?”
“Kurama and I wanted to be with him and he agreed.”
“Weren't you happy, just the two of you?”
“Yes, but we wanted to be with the detective, too.”
“I don't understand,” she complained.
“Hn, who said you had to?” Hiei returned sharply.
The girl licked her lips nervously, “Do…do you…do you love him?”
“We haven't had a chance to find out, but it is quite possible,” Kurama answered.
Yusuke sat up, brown eyes wide as he sought out the green eyes of the kitsune. “Really?” he asked, voice full of awe.
Kurama lightly ran a hand over the detective's uninjured cheek, smiling, “Quite possibly really.”
Yusuke leaned into the touch and smiled. Keiko saw the expression of happiness and contentment on her friend's face, and her emotions became more confused. She was happy that he was happy, hurt that it wasn't with her, and still in shock at the sudden revelation. Looking at the koorime, who still held her to the tree, “And you?”
Hiei looked a little embarrassed, “The fox speaks for both of us. He does it better than I do, but yes, quite possibly.”
Keiko closed her eyes, trying to process everything. She had not missed the surprised and gratified expression that crossed Yusuke's face, nor the smile on Kurama's face. Licking her lips again, she opened her eyes and took a deep breath. “I wish you every happiness, then.” Hiei released the girl and she continued, “You still owe me dinner, however, Yusuke.”
Yusuke grinned broadly in relief as Kurama pulled him to his feet and continued to hold his hand. “Yeah, sure. You still wanna go to the diner?”
“That sounds good,” she answered, eyes focused on the two intertwined hands. “Could you and Hiei go ahead, Kurama. I'd like to talk to Yusuke a moment alone.” Catching Hiei's glare, she hurried on, “I won't hurt him, I swear, I just need to ask a couple of questions.”
The boy squeezed the hand in his, “It's okay. We'll catch up.” He didn't really want the two demons to leave after what Keiko had forced them to confess, but he also needed to be sure everything was alright with Keiko. Kurama squeezed Yusuke's hand back before releasing it and walked out of the sheltering trees. Hiei stopped to stand next to the detective a moment, capturing his hand briefly, before he, too, left the trees.
Quietly, Keiko asked the first question in her mind, “When did this happen?”
“Last night, Kurama invited me over. Hiei was there and we played a game. During the game, I found out that they were together and they liked me. I found that I liked them too, and I couldn't decide which one I liked better. They told me I didn't have to decide, that they both wanted have a relationship with me. I wanted this, too. It was my decision to talk with you and Kuwabara.” He grinned at her a bit sheepishly, “You know me, I can't hide things.”
Keiko nodded, trying to rephrase her next question, but it slipped out before she could, “Did you sleep with them?”
Yusuke blushed, “Yeah….in both senses of the word.”
Had the bottom not already been torn out of her world, that confession would have done it. As it was, her knees gave out on her and she fell to the ground, her jaw hanging loosely. Yusuke knelt next to her, “I'm sorry, Keiko, but I want to be honest with you.”
Dumbly, Keiko nodded. Her mind continued to seek something to give her direction, to give her an anchor. “Why?” she asked.
“Why what? Why did I do it? Why did I tell you?”
“Yeah, that,” she answered, her voice dazed.
“I told you because you asked and I don't want lies between us. You're my best friend, Keiko. I don't want to loose that. I…well…I guess I did it because….well,” he blushed more deeply, “well, I've fantasized about them, and well….I wanted to.”
“You…you…you fantasized about them?” Keiko's eyes now met his. He nodded silently in response. “Did…did you ever….ever fantasize about….about us?” It was her turn to blush.
“Y'know, Kurama asked me that, too.” A sigh, “Yes, I did, but, well, every time I did, it'd end up that you'd beat me up.” He looked at the ground, chewing his lip again.
Were it possible for Keiko to feel anything else at that moment, she would have been shocked. As it was, she was simply overwhelmed at the amount of information. “I can't deal with anymore right now,” she said. “It's going to take me time to cope with all this, Yusuke. It may be a little while before we can hang out again, but I do want you to be happy, and I still want to be your friend.” She pushed herself to her feet. “Let's go eat, but then, I need to go home. I hope you understand.”
Yusuke stood, “I can understand. When you're ready, you know where to find me.”
Keiko smiled, “Anywhere but class.”
Yusuke grinned, “Yeah, that's about it.”
Before they left the trees, Yusuke caught the girl's shoulder, causing her to turn to face him. She turned to face him. “Thanks, Keiko,” he said simply. She merely nodded in response.
Dinner was a silent meal. No one felt inclined to break the silence beyond what was needed to order food. The meal lacked the tension that would normally accompany lack of speech, so everyone enjoyed their food. After the meal, they stood a moment outside the diner. “Well,” Keiko finally said, “I'll see you all later, then. Good luck, and I am happy for you, Yusuke, I just….”
“I know,” he murmured when her voice trailed off. “See ya later, Keiko.”
With a wave, he turned to leave, Kurama and Hiei flanking him as they returned to Kurama's house. With a sigh and a slight laugh, Yusuke said, “That went better than I thought it would.”
Kurama smiled at him and Hiei just grunted.
