Burning Souls
Guess what, I don't own Yu Yu Hakusho.
Guess what else, I'm sorry about my spelling errors. I'll fix 'em this chapter.
I jumped to the side again, just in time to avoid the dancer's mad flailing. I knew how to beat him, it was a matter of could I. The black core was his only weakness, but that was surrounded by flames that would melt anything.
"Urameshi! She can't beat a living flame!" the baka yelled.
"Watch me." I replied quietly.
"What if you can't?!"
"Then...." I thought for a moment. "We all die in the flames of hell. Sound good?"
"Ah! I don't wanna die like this!"
"Kuwabara! Will you shut up!" Yusuke yelled.
The flare dancer laughed again, spinning wildly. With every turn, he sent out flaming darts. With every cut I lost more energy. I was fighting on thin ice. Not only that, the dancer was speeding up. I let out a small yell, blade piercing my shoulder.
"How does it feel? What do they call it? Your lifeblood! That's the word!" Akira laughed along with the dancing flames. "Maybe I'll join!" Akira appeared from no where and sent a blast of energ into my side. I was sent back will another half yell, hitting the wall and falling to the ground.
"C'mon! Get up!" Yusuke yelled.
"I'm not dead, you fool." I scowled, getting to my feet.
"Ha! Will you stand alone before my power?! Will you fight with all your heart and find that it's not enough! Can you stand strong alone!" Akira yelled. "Death is your only choice!"
"Stand strong! Don't let the bitch get to you! You're never alone!"
I gasped at the voice. Then, I smirked. "No, I'm never alone." My ki flared, creating a strong aura around me. My voice changed for an instant. "And you're about to find out why."
"It's not possible! You can't posess a soul!"
"I'd like to prove you wrong."
~~~~~~~~
Serenity stood with her arms at her sides. Her voice again changed.
"Why don't to foget the distraction and fight me for real. It will only be a waste of my time."
Akira scowled. The flare dancer would be of no more use.
'There,' she thought. 'now we're evenly matched. Arigato, mother.'
Akira was afraid, not of Serenity. Serenity had never been a threat, but this....this was a threat to her life. Her mother, Mina, had been Akira's rival.
"Come at me with all you've got. Maybe we can see some of those skills you brag about." Serenity was clearly back in control.
"Shimatta...."
The katana jammed in the wall rose and flew to Akira's hand.
"Are you ready? Because I'll take off more than just your arm this time. By the way, no one touches my sword."
Akira laughed. "Let's go." And the two seemingly disappeared.
"What? Where'd they go?!" Kuwabara yelled.
"Be quiet and focus!" Yusuke ordered.
The two reappeared. Serenity was holding the blade of her sword between her hands as Akira struggled to pass her defenses. Akira swept one foot forward, knocking Serenity onto her back. Akira went down for the final blow when the ill tempered one thrust her feet into Akira's stomach. Serenity rolled backwards, throwing the witch into the wall in the process.
"K'so!"
Serenity jumped to her feet, holding the gash in her torso.
~
"Hey, when'd she get that?" Kuwabara asked, dumbfounded.
"In the skirmish that you aparently didn't follow." Hiei scowled, not back on his feet but on his knees at least.
"And why does she look like shorty?"
"Hn. If you can't answer that one then you're more than a fool."
~
"I've played in your world, now play in mine."
Akira was puzzled. "What do you speak of?"
"I summon the Power of Dark Souls. It's quite simply, really." She extended her hand. "Instead of mortal fighting, we fight spiritually, and we fight for true keeps. Lose the fight and you lose your soul. This technique also brings any soul in range into the battle. I'm not mentioning any names, but you should be surprised."
"Damn you! Damn you to hell and back!"
~~~~~~~~
The tantei as well as Akira and Serenity found themselves in an abyss of darkness. There was also one other figure.
"I'm lost." Kuwabara said, still confused.
"Yeah, can someone clear this up?" Yusuke questioned.
"We're in my playing field--the soul playing field." Serenity explained. "Your souls have been separated from their bodies. You see, this gives me an advantage. I don't have to use any extra yoki to support a body anymore, you know, with me being dead and all."
"Nani?! She's DEAD?!"
"This shouldn't be happening!" Akira shouted. "I already killed you! Almost fifty years ago! You should be gone! But you wanted to see that damn father of yours again! Why couldn't you just stay dead!"
"Now, now, now. You should know better than to think that the loss of a mortal body is really the end, because we souls tend to come back and kick you in the ass. By the way, I brough a guest."
"Iie! K'so! Te-!" But Akira was silenced by the sword piercing from her back to her stomach. And everything disappeared.
A few weeks later....
"I still don't get it." Kuwabara said. "First Shorty acts weird during that fight. Then he takes off and doesn't say anything!"
"He probably had a good reason." Yusuke said.
Kurama nodded. Hiei did have a good reason.
~~~~~~~~
Hiei glance over the two tombstones again. He had forgotten them and tried to move on, but it never worked. The one to the left was slightly larger than the one to the left. The right read,
'Mina Jaganshi'
And that same poem was inscribed.......
'Long has paled that sunny sky:
Echoes fade and memoreies die.
Autumn frosts have slain July.
Still she haunts me, phantomwise,
Alice moving under skies
Never seen by waking eyes...
...In a Wonderland they lie,
Dreaming as the days go by,
Dreaming as the summers die:
Ever drifting down the stream-
Lingering in the golden gleam-
Life, what is it but a dream?'
Hiei wished it had been a dream, but the dreams of a forbidden one never came true. He moved to the smaller stone on the left. This time, he read it aloud,
"Serenity Jaganshi"
"Where do we go when we just don't know,
And how do we relight the flame when it's gold?
Why do dream when our thoughts mean nothing,
And when will we learn to control?"
"All I wanted was love."
He unfolded a closed hand and rolled the teargem in his hand. This was all that was left. So many memories were held by somehing so small. He let the gem drop as he held it only by the chain and let the charm dangle in the wind. Hiei placed it on the grave and stood. Something should have been said, but nothing was. He turned and began to walk away. At the sound of laughter, he turned back. Serenity sat beside another with long black hair and jade eyes, her mother. They smiled and waved just before fading away. Hiei lowered his head and smiled slightly.
"Rest in peace." was all that he said.
DW: And it's done!!!! *Dances around*
Hiei: And?
DW: *Stops and starts to cry* Damn! This really SUCKED!!! I swear that this was my worst fic yet!
Kurama: Don't get too upset.
DW: *Stops crying* You're right! I have more fics to write!
