"Do you think they'll survive?" Kuwabara's voice echoed in the dark.
"I don't know. I don't think Kurama will," Yusuke's voice answered. A match was struck. A candle was lit. They were in an ice cave. Hiei lay a few feet to the pair's right and Kurama lay in front of them. Both demons were covered a heavy blankets. The two humans were shivering. The smaller form stirred.
"How do you think he'll take it?" Kuwabara asked. Yusuke gave him a questioning look. "Hiei."
"I don't know. I mean, Kurama is his best friend," Yusuke ventured. He shrugged his shoulders. "Who knows?"
A moan escaped Hiei's mouth. Both turned their attention to the small Jaganshi. Hiei's left hand went to his head. He slowly sat up. His eyes opened, instantly landing on Yusuke and Kuwabara.
"So you two bumbling fools are awake," he said. He rubbed his head. "Where's Kurama?"
The humans looked at each other. Hiei frowned slightly. Yusuke pointed at the still frame of their friend. Hiei stared for a moment, not quiet comprehending. He shook his head and closed his eyes. It had to be a figment of his imagination. He opened his eyes, waiting to see the kitsune's smiling face. Waiting to hear him say that he had been worried, that he was happy to see that Hiei had come back to the living. No such thing met his gaze, only the near frozen body of Kurama. Hiei felt his heart wrench in his chest. It twisted and turned. He felt in as it started to break into pieces. He kept them cracks, telling himself that Kurama would get better.
"Hiei?"
"Kurama!" Hiei shouted in reflex. He had thought that Yusuke's voice was Kurama's. He looked at the tall youth standing next to him. He felt Yusuke's eyes on him.
"Hiei, I don't think he's going to make it," Yusuke said. Hiei's hearted was hit by a hammer, but refused to break.
"He will," he said stubbornly. Yusuke shook his head. Kurama hadn't moved in a day. He wasn't going to make it. He made his way to the demon. He felt his forehead, it was frozen.
"Hiei!" Yusuke shouted. Hiei responded as he had done before. Yusuke's heart went out to him. No one had ever really cared for Hiei before Kurama. Now he was going to lose the one person who loved him more than life itself.
"Hiei, he's freezing. Warm him up… please…" Yusuke said. His voice was starting to give. The grief was starting to hit home. He shook his head. He would be strong… for Kurama. Hiei was under the blankets wrapped around Kurama's prone body in an instant. Yusuke slowly backed away. There was no changing the future, and no way to know what could have been. Kuwabara sank to his knees. Hiei shut his eyes, muttering something incoherently in Kurama's ear. Yusuke retreated to a corner. He couldn't watch someone he love die.

"Where am I?" Kurama looked about him. It looked like his apartment, but it was different. It was decorated differently. He looked at all the different objects. He looked at the bunk bed that had taken the place of his futon. A girl was sleeping peacefully under the sheets. Kurama was bewildered. When did he get here? The last thing he remembered was taking that energy ball instead of letting it hit Hiei…
"Hello there," a woman spoke quietly. Kurama whirled to face her. She was wearing a green skirt and black tank top. Her form was shapely, but muscular. Her face was like a wolf's. Her eyes were lavender. Her hair was the color of her eyes. She walked up to Kurama's side.
"It's very easy to explain what is going on," she began. Her voice sounded like a gong. It was quiet unsettling considering she looked so helpless and sweet. "You have a choice. This `vision' will help you choose. You have two options: live, or die. Seems simple enough doesn't it. This is life without you. That girl in that bed is who takes your place."
"So I'm still in the ice and cold of the Makai?" Kurama asked, staring at the girl in the bed as she yawned, stretched, and sat up, opening her eyes.
"Your body is yes," the woman replied. "Actually, your friends are quiet unhappy at the moment."
"Why wouldn't they be?!" Kurama asked, stunned. The woman shrugged.
"I don't know, I do not feel emotions as you do. I believe one should let those dying go and not mourn as they pass or have passed," she replied. The girl got out of the bed. She was a cute little slip of a thing. She had light brown hair. Her eyes were green. She was most definitely female, and showed it. She wore a white mini tank top with light blue mini shorts that had giraffes on them. She meandered out of the room.
"So she takes my place…" Kurama mumbled. He followed her into the kitchen. She pulled out two eggs and the milk. She yawned again as she got a bowl and plate out. She stared the stove and placed a pan over it.
"Yes she does," the woman replied. "She gained everything you had, and would have had, had you lived. She got your apartment, your friends, your Reikai job, your lover…"
"My what?!" Kurama interrupted. The woman looked at him funny. She shrugged.
"Must be a future thing. He really is quiet cute though," she continued to herself more than Kurama. A loud banging was heard and Yusuke and Kuwabara tumbled into the apartment. They were bickering and punching each other.
"How long have they been doing that?" the girl asked in her whimsical voice. Kurama looked about for the person receiving this question. His eyes fell on Hiei, standing near the girl. Hiei shrugged.
"Maybe ten minutes," he replied. Kurama ran over to his friend.
"Hiei!" he shouted and attempted to take him into a bear hug. He ran right through him. Kurama turned, bewildered. The woman came up to him and patted him on the shoulder.
"You can't do that," she told him. "You're like a ghost, you can't touch anything in the vision."
The girl began making French toast while engaging Hiei in a meaningless conversation. Yusuke and Kuwabara kept pelting each other, each punch getting more violent.
"When do you think they'll knock each other out?" Hiei asked the girl. She smiled sweetly at him and winked. Hiei smiled back.
"I can never get him to do that!!!" Kurama shouted at the woman. She plugged her ears.
"Right… now," the girl replied as Kuwabara and Yusuke K.O.ed each other. Hiei laughed.
"Or That!!!!" Kurama shouted at the woman again. She flinched and took three steps back before replying.
"Vision. Not real," she said. "It's only what could happen if you die now."
"Still!!" Kurama shouted. She shrugged. The girl flipped her French toast onto her plate. She grabbed some powder sugar and sat at the table. Hiei sat on her right. He stared off into space. The girl noticed a few seconds later. She sighed and waved her hand in front of Hiei's face. Hiei snapped to and smiled shakily at her.
"It still reminds me of him… this apartment," Hiei said distantly. Kurama felt his eyes tear up. "He and I had a lot of fun here… before he died…"
"Don't dwell on the past," the girl comforted him. She sat on his chair, facing him. "What's done is done."
"He could have survived!" Hiei shouted back. The girl flinched. "He wasn't that weak! He could've come too… but he didn't. He just… died…" Hiei trailed off. The girl pulled him to her. She stroked his back. Hiei sat up. "Damn him."
The girl flinched. She had to get a different apartment.
"I… did… that to… him… ?" Kurama asked the woman. She turned to him. She gave him a sympathetic look and shook her head `yes'.
An hour later, the humans had left and the girl and Hiei were alone. They were quiet happy in each other's company. They made their way to her bedroom. Kurama turned away.
"I get the point," he told the woman as he heard them moan. He walked out through the apartment wall and floated outside the room, escaping the noise. The woman looked at him sympathetically.
"You know," she said. "I never have felt this way for anyone I've done this for. Normally they decide that their friends and loved ones would be better off without you, but for some reason you don't. You want to be with them and the truth of the matter is, is that you'd be better off alive than dead. I feel for you."
Kurama gave her a sad smile.
"How do I get out of here and to my body?" he asked her. She flinched.
"Your spirit has to be strong enough to get out of the illusion and back into the living world," she replied. "Yours is too weak."
Kurama stared at her open mouthed. He fell to the ground, defeated. The woman came up behind him. Her eyes glistened with tears.
"I don't think he'll last the night."
"Yusuke!" Kurama shouted.
"He can't hear you. That's what your body's ears are hearing," she said.
"He'll make it!"
Hiei…
"God Damnit Hiei let him go! He's dying! Let him go quickly!"
"I will not let him go!"
"Let go Hiei!"
"Never! If he's going I'm going with him!!!"
"Hiei stop!"
"Hiei!" Kurama cried out. He stood and darted off in a random direction, the woman close behind. "Hiei don't!"
"Damnit! Stop struggling! The bonds are for your own good Hiei!"
"Like hell they are! If he dies let me go with him!"
Kurama's heart broke.
"I'll help you," the woman whispered. Kurama looked back at her. She had tears of gold running down her face. "You two are clearly the chosen ones. The ones to free me from this existence, and the ones who will be the greatest and most well known lovers of all time."
She came over to Kurama and placed a single golden tear in his palm. He blinked at it. He felt himself floating farther away. He looked back, and she was gone.

Kurama's fluttered open slowly. He felt hot. He looked down at himself. A small fire demon had attached himself to his waist and wasn't planning on letting go any time soon. A single word slipped through the Jaganshi's mouth: `Kurama'.
"Kurama…" Yusuke's voice echoed. Kurama looked up, there were his friends, and the woman. She smiled sweetly at him. He smiled back.
"You're really back!!!!!!!!" Kuwabara shouted as loud as he could, since that was all he could do. Hiei stirred. Kurama smiled joyously at his friends. Hiei's eyes lethargically opened. Bright green eyes met his blood red ones. Hiei's heart soared. Kurama was alive! Before he could control himself, he let out a happy shout and kissed his friend roughly on the lips. Kurama gladly returned the kiss. Yusuke and the woman let out sarcastic `oh's as Kuwabara turned away, not being able to bear it. The two demons parted, both gasping for air, and staring at each other.
"If you don't mind," the woman began to say to Yusuke as the demons jumped each other. The woman, Yusuke and Kuwabara headed out of the cave. "I'd like to stay with your group."
"It's cool," Yusuke returned. "By the way, what's your name?"
"Rose. I am their daughter."
