Chapter 5: City Of Angels

“Saaaatu?” A voice called into Satu's ears. She slowly stirred from her peaceful sleep and saw a pink haired girl sitting on the end of her bed. Out of the corner of her eyes she could see Hiei sitting against her head board asleep; her hands gripping onto his cloak. She blushed again and released her death grip.

“Emi!” Satu squealed quietly. She crawled out of bed and hugged her friend tightly. The pink haired girl looked at her best friend and hugged her once more, relieved to see her in one piece and not hurt.

“Who is that boy? Why is he in your bed?! What kind of place is this world?!” Emi whispered angrily. Satu smiled and laughed as softly as she could, dragging Emi out of the room so they wouldn't wake Hiei up. When the two girls reached the room, they shouted and squealed and jumped and hugged.

“Emi! I missed you! How did you get down here!? Did Hitomi sneak you out?! Do the Elders know?! What's going on back home?! Are you okay?! Do you like your human body?! You look so… cute!! Oh I missed you!!” Satu chirped.

“I missed you too! Hitomi told the Elders I would be able to find you! So I get to spend a few days down here! Hitomi's in trouble! Home is a wreck! Everyone turned over EVERYTHING to find you! I missed you! Being human feels weird! I can't fly, and I don't know what anything is! You look so pretty! The Elders actually came to the castle! It's getting strange! I missed you!” Emi smiled and giggled. Both girls sat down and talked about Hitomi and how the search was going. Satu stared at Emi's pink pigtails and her chocolate brown eyes.

{How did I ever deal without those? How long has it been since I've seen her? A week, maybe more? I can't believe I've been on Earth for that long! And I'll be here longer!! But… I wonder…if Hitomi is alright. I can't let her take the blame for me. I don't want her to get hurt… I just… want her to okay.}

Satu sighed deeply, feeling depressed at Hitomi's troubles with the Elders. She was breaking all the rules just to protect Satu. The door to the living room slide open and Kurama walked in with Hiei behind him. Both looked at the pink haired girl and then at Satu.

“This is Emi! She's a worker in the castle, and of course my best friend! Hitomi had the Elders send her to find me, so she'll be here for a while. Do you think Master Genkai will mind?” Satu asked the boys. They both shook their heads, still tired from the long night. “Well, Emi, this is Kurama and that is Hiei. Both are part of the Tante. Which is like… a…Detective Agency for the Prince. Hitomi dislikes both of them, but she wouldn't tell me why.” Satu looked at Emi and smiled. Kurama and Hiei both sighed long and hard. They knew exactly why she didn't like them. It IS kind of HARD to trust two murderous thieves who claim to be GOOD. But neither of the youkai cared about what the Guardian felt.

“Do they do anything special!?” Emi asked, excited. Satu nodded.

“Kurama and Hiei are youkai! They can do all kinds of things Emi!!” Satu smiled. Emi clapped her hands, all excited to be around real youkai and real humans and all new real things.

“Can they make babies?!?!?” Emi asked innocently. Kurama and Hiei stared at the girl, then at each other. What the…

“No. They aren't like that. They are both boys. And… I don't think they can do it to themselves. But I'm sure they know what kind of youkai can!” Satu continued to smile, afraid that if she looked at the two youkai she might break into a giggle fit and embaress herself and them. Emi was… not so brilliant and not human-aquainted. Not that Satu was, but she certainly knew more. “Emi, why don't you go through this door and back into the room and sleep for a while. The bed is comfy. I'll wake you… Promise!” Satu got up and walked Emi to the door. They hugged and Satu watched the girl as she made her way to the bedroom to sleep. Finally Satu sat back down.

“She's….uh…what's the word I'm looking for…” Kurama tried to think of an appropriate word, but nothing would come out. Satu laughed and held her hands to her stomach. It hurt so much to laugh that hard.

“She's a servant in the castle; they don't receive much schooling, only enough to read signs and such. I'm sorry, but she is really sweet and she does anything for someone she loves. Please forgive her?” Satu begged the boys. Kurama nodded and Hiei didn't bother to look at Satu. He still hadn't forgotten the night's events. They were fresh in his mind, playing with him and his emotions. It was painful.

“So she lives in the castle with you? Well, I'm sure it will be a nice change for her. I'll personally ask Genkai if she can stay here. I will be right back Satu.” Kurama stood up and walked out of the room on the hunt for Genkai. Hiei finally turned his head and looked at the girl. She sat there patiently, waiting for the fox to return. Hiei sat down where the fox was so the girl would have to look at him, have to see him. She started to blush a bit more and Hiei smirked. He knew that she remembered what had happened, not that he was angry or anything.

“Uhhmmm… Hiei, I'm…” Satu fumbled around for the words that would clear the air, but she found that she didn't have them. It was impossible for her to look at him at the moment. She felt the hot feeling wash over her cheeks and she could tell she was blushing again. He made her nervous. Scared to say the wrong things.

{If only he would talk FIRST!} Satu thought to herself.

“Onna, I'm not mad.” Hiei said, if almost like he heard her thoughts. Satu sighed, relieved that Hiei wasn't mad at her odd actions. She really didn't mean to, but it was nice to have someone there. And she really was thankful that he didn't beat her over the head or something. Hitomi might have if she had work to do. But that was Hitomi.

“Thank you, Thank you, THANK You!” Satu jumped at Hiei and hugged him tightly. Hiei went to pull out his katana but stopped himself, instead, he put his hands on her waist and peeled her off of him. She saw the look of fear in his eyes and she pulled herself a few inches back. Hiei's eyes for once held a steady emotion; confusion. Satu knew that she could help him, knew she could fix it; but would he let her? She raised her hands in front of his face and Hiei pulled back. “Can I…?” Satu asked the boy. He considered the risks, how she would find out what a horrible person he was. She would take a part of his past, and a part of his future. But what would she take? Would he see it? Would he feel it? “Done.” Satu said, pulling her hands away from Hiei's face, the white light fading. He had been so worried about everything he hadn't felt the light in his face. His body felt lighter, less weighed down by things unspoken and fights unfinished with himself.

“Satu.” Hiei spoke the girl's name. He watched her as she rubbed tears out of her eyes. She struggled with his past. It was hard to watch him watch his sister, the girl Yukina, and not be able to tell her how much he felt. He couldn't, forbidden. Forbidden; he was the Forbidden child.

“It's… just… so… unbearable. Hurts… so deeply… in my chest.” Satu looked up at Hiei, clutching her chest where her heart was. Hiei grabbed her fiercely and held her. He didn't care what anyone would say if they walked in. He didn't care that Kurama would never speak to him again. Something about the girl just made him whole. Satu felt herself regain composure, her eyes dried back up and she stopped feeling so much pain. It faded, like every thing she took in from every person; it faded. Hiei let go of the Angel and looked at her. She took something from him but he couldn't place it; as if he didn't remember it hurting in the first place.

“What did you take from me?” Hiei asked. He had to know, had to remember it so that he wouldn't forget. Satu looked at him and smiled.

“I took away the loneliness.” Hiei thought for a second and tried to feel it, tried to surface it. But it didn't come. It wasn't there. He half smiled, half smirked; not sure what he should say. It didn't feel bad, but it didn't feel great. Maybe he hadn't felt it all along. Someone had finally taken away his loneliness.

“Satu…” Kurama called out Satu's name as he was coming down the hall. Genkai had said yes and he was excited to tell her good news. He walked into the room to find the two exactly where he left them. Satu smiled when she saw Kurama walk into the room, a big grin on his face as well. Hiei watched the two, his mind boiling with jealousy.

“Yes?” Satu replied.

“Genkai said that Emi is more than welcome to stay.” Kurama said. Hiei noticed the fox's happier spirit envelope the entire room. It always made Hiei jealous that the fox could be so light hearted and free on the outside.

“Great! I'm going to go tell her! Thank you!” Satu jumped up and ran to tell Emi that she was more than welcome to stay with her. Kurama sighed happily as Satu left the room, his heart melting every time he saw her. He looked at Hiei for some sort of acceptance but found that instead, Hiei was acting rather cold to him. Hiei got up and walked in the opposite direction of where Satu had headed. The fox was on his nerves and he needed to go figure himself out before he said anything stupid.

“Stupid… Stupid…” Hiei mumbled. Kurama strained his ears to hear the boy but couldn't. Something was going on and Kurama thought he had a good idea of what it was.

Satu watched her friend sleep for a while before she finally decided to take a walk outside. The flowers in Genkai's garden were blooming and folding their petals back so the sun could shine on them in the early morning. Satu ran her hands over the soft flowers, healing the dead ones, letting them all grow.

“Hnn.” A voice said from a near by tree. Satu looked up and saw Hiei, sitting against the trunk of a tree, feet lying parallel to the branch he was on. She looked at him, taking in all his features, remembering the pain. Then she went back to the flowers, pruning, healing, and watching. Hiei felt frustrated that he didn't know how to make her come closer, how to get her attention.

“Try talking to her Hiei-san.” A small voice came from the bottom of the tree. Hiei looked down and saw Yukina, passing by with fresh herbs from a patch in the forest. Hiei nodded, surprised that she could easily tell what was going on. He watched Yukina pass by Satu and into the house. Slowly he approached Satu, keeping his distance, walking, almost stalking prey.

{Prey? She isn't prey. She's more than that.}

Satu tilted her head up. What was going on? She was hearing voices now. Prey? It sounded like…

“Hello.” Hiei said clearly as he stood by Satu, her white sun dress being blown by the night breeze. She looked at him with shock.

“Hi. This is a change.” Satu smiled. It wasn't bad, it was, just different from what normal Hiei was. But… she couldn't help but feel something was off. What were the voices in her head?

{What is happening to me?}

Hiei looked at Satu oddly. Was she asking him? Did she know what was going on? Hiei looked at her.

{Are you telepathic onna?}

“Hiei! Is that you!?” Satu backed up a bit, feeling around her ears for a secret microphone, expecting Hiei to be a ventriloquist. Hiei nodded. Satu breathed in.

{Like this?}

{Yes.}

“You didn't know you were telepathic?” Hiei asked. Satu shook her head, she had no idea. At least now she felt relieved, knowing that maybe she should be careful to keep her thoughts to herself. Hiei nodded and Satu sighed. She had to try harder. “Uhmm…do you, want to… walk?” Hiei shyly asked Satu. She smiled and nodded, trying to control her thoughts. The two started to walk through the forest, and down to wear a small waterfall was. They stopped and Satu sunk her feet into the water, feeling the sand squish beneath her toes.

{Tell me about your mom, Hiei}

{Hnn. I never knew her.}

{I know, but… did you ever want to?}

{Yes.}

Hiei watched as Satu cupped the water in her hands and let it fall through. He felt like maybe he was the water running through her hands, there for one moment, and then falling helplessly the second until he fell back into his original state. He longed for her to stop the falling back.

{Do you remember yours?}

{A bit. No one really talks about her in the castle. Sometimes I remember bits and pieces… her smile, her laughter, her scent.}

{Like my cloak?}

{No. Hitomi and you… both smell the same. Like protection.}

{Hnn.}

Satu looked out into the dark water crashing down the cascading rocks. She wished she could be the water, churning and flowing. Or at least adapting well to change. She didn't want to be forever stuck in the world she was in. She walked forward, pulling up her dress so that she could feel the water against her legs too. Maybe she could ask Hiei to join her, maybe he would appreciate it.

{Do you miss the Makai?}

{Not right now.}

{What's it like? Are there lots of people? Is everyone nice like you and Kurama?}

{No. It's nothing special, onna. You shouldn't concern yourself with it. I'm sure Heaven is much better… Not that I'll ever know…}

{You aren't missing much. It's too white, too clean, too loving. Everything is fake and no one really looks at who you might be.}

{Hnn.}

Hiei walked towards where Satu stood, her dress in the water, which was up to her waist at this point. He felt insecure watching her walk away, deeper and deeper into the unknown waters. It scared him, that maybe she would fade away, or maybe that she could drown. She smiled at him as he stepped into the water. He wanted to be closer, talk longer. He wanted her.

{Why did you run away?}

{I didn't really. Hitomi told me I had to go, that I was in trouble. So I believed her, because when you love someone, you believe them if they tell you that you are in trouble or that you are making a mistake.}

{What if she's wrong?}

{Then I forgive her.}

{Does that work?}

{Work how, Hiei?}

{Will you forgive someone if you love them? No matter what they do to you? Even if they end up hurting you?}

{Yes, unless the pain becomes unbearable. There is such a fine line. But why do you ask?}

{Hnn.}

Satu watched as the Jaganshi waded through the water until he was level with her. He was only a few inches shorter than her, but she couldn't tell because his hair was spiked straight up. She looked into his eyes; blood red and filled with nothing. She hadn't met anyone since Hitomi that let their eyes get that lifeless. It was a shame… he really was beautiful to her.

{Do you ever get close to anyone?}

{Hnn. Why should I? There's no need to.}

{Sometimes the loneliness we have is caused by ourselves. I just thought that maybe you didn't realize…}

{Realize what?}

{Nothing.}

{Tell me, onna!}

{You can get closer… if you want… you can get closer to me.}

Hiei's eyes went wide, his chest tightened. He felt nervous, like he was making a life and death decision. How would that work? How would he forgive and forget what he's been through, seen, felt? Why would she even ask him that?!

{I don't need you to survive.}

Satu backed away. Her eyes were wide with shock, her heart felt swollen. She felt her footing slip away and her head fall under the water. Hiei pushed through the water to grab her, but she fell backwards and her head fell under the water, her eyes still upset at him.

“SATU!”

Those eyes burnt him.

“SATU!”

Scorned him.

“PLEASE!”

Blue and shining,

“I'M SORRY!”

he poisoned them with his words.

“Satu!” Hiei shouted into the water, his body shaking as he saw a lock of her hair floating on the surface of the water. He swam over to her, flipped her head over so he could see her face. She was cold, her chest not moving up and down like when she slept. Hiei pulled her out of the water, trying to get his cloak off so he could warm himself up. “I'm sorry, please.” Hiei begged the girl. He picked up her cold body and held it close to his. Swiftly he picked her up and ran with her towards the Temple. His senses were all off. He tried to feel for a pulse, rushing through the door. His vision was blurry, he saw Yusuke, he saw the idiot sitting with his sister, and then he saw Kurama and the look on Kurama's face. It was scared, it was angry. It was full of emotions that Hiei couldn't show, could let himself be a part of. His arms weren't heavy anymore, Satu wasn't with him, still wasn't breathing. Yukina wrapped her arms around the girl, Botan screamed when she saw the girl. The girl's friend, Emi, she cried. She sobbed. He sobbed too, but no tears came. Then it was black, and he was falling again, falling and listening to the calling. Calling out his name. It was black and she wasn't there. He slept.
