CHAPTER 14: Heavenly Lies Bide Time
Satu looked at the Guardian, confused as to what had been transpiring when she went to bed. Hitomi sighed and patted the seat next to her, calling Satu to it. Slowly the white haired angel sat, wondering what excuses would be made to keep her further in the dark.
“Your mother is dead, Satu. You know that you are half angel and half demon. Your father was a demon. Your mother was a Celestial Angel. You are not the next Celestial Angel. You never were supposed to exist.” Hitomi said bluntly. Kurama wanted to slap the Guardian for being too blunt as Satu started to cry.
“Does this mean you don't love me anymore?” Satu begged Hitomi. Hitomi smiled and grabbed hold of Satu tightly.
“I love you more because of it.”
“Tell me anything else. EVERYTHING else!” Satu cried. Hitomi nodded.
“Let's take a walk then. There are some things I'd prefer to say to you in private, Satu.” Hitomi stood, and Satu clung on to her waist like a little child. Hitomi wanted to savor the moments before Satu would finally know the truth.
“What about me?” Emi asked curiously, tilting her head to the side.
“I'll takey wakey care of YOOOOU!!!” A familiar voice entered the scene with a large and gaseous puff of pink smoke, scented like strawberries. Everyone's head turned to see Yume-sama enter, except for Hitomi, who had obviously been expecting the Elder.
“NOOOOO!!!!” Emi tried to dart towards Satu, but Yume-sama caught a hold of her and pulled her into a big hug.
“Aren't you glad to seeeeeee me?! AWWW!! You're soooo happy you're crying!!!” Yume-sama stroked the top of Emi's hair while Emi tried to run away. The gang's faces were filled with twitching eyes and scared looks. Hitomi pulled Satu out the back and held on to her tightly.

“So I'm not real?” Satu asked the older girl, who now held all the answers.
“No, you are real. But you aren't a real Celestial Angel, or an angel in general. But you aren't a real demon. In reality, you have no place to be put.” Hitomi said casually, not trying to sound mean or angry. Both angels sat and Satu snuggled up to Hitomi, confused and cold.
“So…. My mom?” Satu questioned.
“Your mother was amazing. She fought to save your life, and I've been carrying on that battle. Her name was Ren-sama. She was beautiful, and you look a lot like her to me.” Hitomi smiled, tears pouring out of her eyes. She was annoyed that she was crying again… for the 8th time in such a short period.
“How did she…?” Satu held tightly to Hitomi. It seemed as if she was holding Hitomi to comfort her.
“She sacrificed herself to save you, but not before she killed the Elders who were going to kill you. It isn't really understood if she killed everyone in the castle that day, but all I remember is that I came back, and there was blood every where, there were dead Armed Angels, dead Guardians, 3 dead Elders, and then there was you. In your little crib, sleeping. You were only about 4. I grabbed a hold of you and took off to find your mother. It was so scary. I didn't know what to do with you.” Hitomi looked at the little girl, who was growing up to be so much more than Hitomi ever would have guessed her to be.
“Why was she trying to protect me? Why were they trying to kill me?” Satu added.
“Because Ren-sama was filled with power, she pushed her way to go wherever she pleased. And it ended when she was caught in the Makai and the Elders had to send the Guardians to rescue her from her own “wrong doings.” What that means is that she was pregnant- with you.” Hitomi clarified. “Ren-sama was vicious when the Elders told her that they would never recognize you as an Angel. It didn't really matter because Ren-sama would have you.”
“Why was my mom so upset? She could have kids with other angels too?” Satu rubbed her hands together to keep them warm. Hitomi shook her head.
“No. Celestial Angels are forbidden from every having lovers or ever having children. It's the burden that they bear. And it isn't as if we can find them before their powers come to the surface.” Hitomi explained.
“I understand that. So… I'm not a real angel. Then how come I live in Heaven?” Satu asked.
“You have the Celestial Angel's powers. Both you and I have to live in Heaven. Because neither of us is of right birth to be anywhere else. When you were born, you didn't have powers at all. As you grew older however, you ended up having more demonic powers than anyone could have asked for. Ren-sama sealed your demonic abilities and made you a human living in Heaven.” Hitomi looked at Satu, who was trying to take it all in. The air was crisp and it was cooling down quickly. Satu sniffled and then rubbed her nose slightly.
“But that doesn't explain why I have my mother's powers…”
“Right, I'm getting to that. Ren-sama sacrificed herself to kill all of those who tried to keep everyone afraid and away from humans. The Elders knew that you were human without your demonic abilities. They sent the Guardians to kill you.” Hitomi felt Satu take a quick breath in every time she uttered the phrase “kill you.”
“Why did they hate me so much? I wasn't even doing anything wrong!” Satu cried. Hitomi held the angel tightly and rubbed her back.
“Ren-sama was supposed to lead the angels into a long and prosperous life. She just didn't want to by the time her second set of Elders came around. It was unending to her; life that is. Satu, your mother was eternal. She wouldn't have died if she hadn't taken her life. I'm sorry; your mother loved you very much and didn't want her entire paradise to hate you and your kind. It was already bad enough for the demons and the angels. It was forbidden, kind of like the Jaganshi you are in love with…” Hitomi added softly, catching Satu's attention. Satu looked at the older angel and nodded, understanding what Forbidden meant to her.
“My mother tried to protect me because I wasn't an angel. And then I wasn't a demon, so she tried to protect me again. Did I do something wrong?!” Satu cried harder. Hitomi shook her head.
“No. When your mother died, she divided her powers between me and you. She gave the paradise a reason to keep you. She gave me the ability to care for you, to be by you always. You had nothing to do with this. Ren-sama wanted to love you the best she could, and sadly the only way she could do that was to sacrifice herself for you. Don't be angry with her. Satu, your mother loved you so much!” Hitomi cried, pulling the already crying Satu closer. Both girls held each other and cried for what seemed like forever.
“So I have unwanted powers twice now. I feel like a blight on everyone's life.” Satu whispered.
“Don't talk like that. We all love you.” Hitomi added. Satu nodded, feeling the weight of her life sink into her. In a matter of minutes she felt like she had grown to twice her age.
“Can I get rid of them?” Satu asked honestly.
“If you really want to, yes.” Hitomi answered, honestly. “I don't think you really understand what that means though. If you give up your Angel powers, you will no longer have a seal on your demonic powers. That could kill you.” Hitomi looked at the angel, the little girl that she had been taking care of forever. It was hard to be stoic now, pretending like nothing hurt. Satu sighed and nodded.
“I don't want to be either anymore than.” Satu said.
“The only person who can fix that is King Enma.” Yume-sama answered from behind the two angels. Hitomi and Satu turned around to see Yume-sama with a sleeping Emi on her back. Hitomi nodded and Satu looked down at her hands. Her human hands.
{I could have this. I could be human all the time. I wouldn't deal with fancy sleeping garments and I wouldn't have the glares of angry angels who blame me for other people's deaths…. I could have it.}
{Be aware of the cost.}
Satu stood up and looked down at Hitomi and then at Yume-sama.
“I'm going to sleep on it. Good night, and thank you Hitomi.” Satu's cold voice reached Hitomi's ears and she felt like she had placed such a hard burden on the girl's shoulders.
“What will you do if she decides she doesn't want to be an Angel anymore? What if she only keeps her demonic powers? You can't expect her to be a child forever…” Yume-sama added, aware of the hypocracy she was creating.
“Yume-sama, although you have no room to talk…. She you've been in this state since your brother…. I do understand. It isn't about what she is GOING to do. It is about what she feels she MUST do.” Hitomi answered, angry that Yume-sama was trying to tell her how to raise Satu, when she was doing a perfectly fine job.
“I don't want to see Satu stuck like I am. That's all. Now, if ya don't minddddssss, I'm a going to take Emi backy wakey to play with my kitty kat and watch some AWESOME Barbie videos! YAY!” Yume-same smiled like the child she was stuck as. A cloud of pink smoke emerged and then Yume-sama and Emi were gone. Hitomi sighed and ran her hands over her face.
“Why is she like that Hitomi-sama?” Yukina asked the Guardian as she came out to check on her.
“When Yume-sama was still young, her older brother died tragically. She's never really made any progress with it, and she's transfixed on staying a child. I suppose that is just who she is. When she is serious, she is brilliant, and I think… should she ever try, she would make a good adult.” Hitomi finished and stood up, heading towards Yukina and the open door. “She's a pain to baby-sit… that's for sure.”
“Yes Hitomi-sama.” Yukina waited and closed the door behind the exhausted Guardian.
