Beating the Heat

Tired brown eyes gazed out across the crowded beach to the even more overly crowded ocean. She had come down to escape from the sweltering heat wave that had suddenly hit Tokyo. Apparently she wasn't the only who was feeling the effects of the scorching globe hanging in the bleary sky above them.

Sighing she adjusted her nap-sack and began the trek across the hot sands and through the swarm of bodies to find a spot to sit down and set up, hopefully before she got heat stroke. Noticing a small opening next to an elderly couple and a group of kids she moved towards it only to have it snatched away by a family.

She frowned before moving on spotting a space a little ways down only to have it snatched up by a group of girls around her age. She growled before averting her eyes back towards the crowded beach that lay before her. It was going to be a while before she found a spot, she just knew somehow and a glance down at her watch, it would be a very long wait considering it was only nine.

"This is not going so well." She muttered as she began her search anew

It was around ten when she found a spot a little ways away from the commotion but close enough to the ocean for her liking, though it could have been because it was near the rocks.

There wasn't a large enough space for her to lay on that wasn't covered or scattered with stones and boulders. Not wanting to have wasted her search efforts she dropped her bag down and began to disrobe. Unzipping her sleeveless vest and pulling off the loose cargo pants, she folded them carefully before slipping out of her flip-flops, the hot sand causing her to jump and take refuge on her blanket.

Bending down she began to rummage through her bag, pulling out a bottle of sunscreen a few moments later. When she had covered every inch of her skin she made the long walk to the water, even though it was less then five minutes the blazing sun and burning sands made it seem like hours.

The cool spray of the ocean as it touched her heated skin caused her to give a satisfied smile. Moving to the edge she dipped her foot in before wading out into the water stopping only to when it reached a little past her waist.

"Now this is nice." She breathed as she went to dip lower into the cool waters.

A shrill scream followed by shouts snapped her out of her blissful daze. Startled brown eyes jumped around the crowd to see where it was coming from.

"Shark! Shark!"

Came the scream causing a massive stampede as everyone in the water ran to get back onto the beach and out of the water. Out of instinct she made her way back towards shore, her eyes staring longingly at the cool waters as they lapped against the sand.

After a couple moments and seeing how they wouldn't be able to get back into the water she gathered up her stuff and slipped her clothes back on and began the trek back to the streets. What good was going to the beach if you couldn't swim in the ocean? Besides that was whole reason she went, she needed to cool her overly heated body down.

Dodging the half naked sweaty bodies of the other beach goers she made her way back onto the streets where clothed sweaty bodies were swarming and these people were probably a little testier because they were clothed.

She let her gaze wander around her while she made her way back home, hoping her dad had fixed the air conditioning by now. She stopped at the crosswalk intending to move along with everyone else when the sound of small bells chiming caught her attention.

With a small smile on her face she followed the sound into the park her eyes lighting up when she spotted the white booth with the bright colors indicating that it was an ice cream vendor. She also noted with a slight frown the line but seeing how it wasn't so long she ran up and joined the others in the wait, at least this would prove to alleviate her body heat somewhat, for the moment at least.

`Hm…what flavor should I get? Strawberry or maybe chocolate? I could always stay with vanilla.'

She let her thoughts drift her eyes absently noting the line getting shorter. When she blinked a few times noticing there was only four people standing between her and the cool treat she grinned unable to contain her glee.

"Sorry folks but I'm all out!"

A collection of groans was heard along with a few other choice words.

"I'll open back up in an hour!"

Keiko groaned the feeling of a headache coming on. Slumping her shoulders she turned around and continued her trek back home desperately hoping that the air was fixed, she wasn't sure how much longer she would be able to last. Noon was fast approaching and with it the temperature was sure to rise.

Blinking a few times to clear her slightly hazy vision she swiped the bangs away from her forehead before snaking it around to the back of her neck to lift the hair to let the air touch her heated flesh. It only helped for a second.

"I need to cool down, fast." She muttered as her eyes scanned the area around her

She could walk into a restaurant or store but with her luck they were probably all packed with people trying to escape the heat just as she was. Her eyes lit up after a few moments of looking around. Quickly making her way across the street she stopped out side the large glass double doors a grin gracing her features as she read the sign.

[Public Pool-OPEN]

"Yes!" she cried as she pushed open the doors and walked into the cool entranceway only to have her smile drop along with her good mood.

The front area was littered with people trying to get into the pool, apparently she wasn't so lucky, not even waiting around to see if she could get in she turned and walked right back out the doors.

An while later Keiko found herself in the park a few blocks from her house under a large shade tree, her nap-sack tucked under her head as she stared off into the sky. She had made it home only to find that the air hadn't been fixed so she took off towards Yusuke's hoping he was home.

She was a little surprised when his mom answered the door. She had told her that Yusuke was at summer classes to make up for all the time he missed. That wasn't surprising, what was surprising was that she was told Botan and Kurama had escorted him there to actually make sure he got there and stayed.

She knew Kuwabara and his sister were off visiting relatives and she really didn't want to go to Genkai's, it was just to far away for her. The only other option was to try and find a secluded shady spot and just take a nap.

That's what she was trying to do anyway, the laughter and cries of the near by children was making it hard for her to drift off not to mention that the sun was directly over head and there were no shadows for her to take refuge in.

"I really dislike the summer."

When a particularly loud squeal caused the girl to cringe and cover her ears she stood up grabbing her bag and stormed off deeper into the trees.

"I really, really dislike the summer." She muttered as she marched through the forest

Just as she stepped into a clearing she felt a large gust of wind before she was pushed back stumbling to regain her balance only to fall on her butt with a small `umph' escaping her lips. Lifting her head she saw nothing, only the occasional sound of grunts and growls could be heard. Curious she shifted to her knees to stand up only to gasp in surprise upon seeing Hiei and Touya suddenly appear right before her eyes.

Fire clashed with ice; there gazes never wavering as they circled each other weapons drawn and ready. They had been sparring since the better part of the morning and Hiei had to admit he was enjoying it. The ice demon had improved immensely and he was glad that he had come to him to test out his new skills.

Leaning low and keeping his eyes on the demon before him he waited for the other to make their move. It took all of three seconds before a barrage of ice daggers came sailing towards his head. A flick of his wrist sent his sword up to clash with the frozen water shattering it and sending it flying.

He moved just in time to block the attack coming from behind, his sword clashing with Touya's frozen one. The metal blade scraping against the ice sending small chips everywhere. Smirking he gave a rough shove forcing the other back before kicking out with his foot.

Touya only jumped back dodging the blow and landing gracefully a few feet away from the fire koorime. He let his gaze settle on the other demon before grinning, the small gesture causing the other to narrow his eyes in response.

Dissolving his ice sword, Touya widened his stance and crouched down, his hands coming together to stop when only a few inches apart. Closing his eyes he began to concentrate his energy, centering it into the small space between his hands. He could feel the energy collect, smell the chill as is swept through the air around them.

Hiei watched as the demon lowered his stance before closing his eyes. Still wary he moved into a defensive stance wondering what the ice demon was up to. Hoping it wouldn't cause him too much pain, he had some pretty harsh attacks and for him to say that that was something in itself.

Keiko watched the two her gaze riveted on a pair of ice blue eyes. She watched, brows furrowed as he crouched down and closed his eyes. Curious she tilted her head to the side wondering what he was going to do. She couldn't remember seeing this move during the tournament or during their other encounters.

Sitting up on her knees she inched closer to get a better view of what was going on. Stopping just short of the tree line she sat back on her legs and watched as energy began to collect in his hands, crackling around them and causing the air around them to suddenly dropping a few degrees.

The ball of energy began to grow larger, pretty soon engulfing his figure entirely before spreading out. She watched as it soon took up more than half of the clearing, her eyes darting back towards Hiei to see him frown before sheathing his sword and righting himself.

`Wonder what he's going to do?'

Hiei lifted up his right arm eyes still locked onto the other's face noting he still had yet to open his eyes. Taking a deep breath he began to collect his energy in his hand, watching as the dark black green flames danced along his skin before swirling around in the palm of his hand.

This would be a very interesting battle and he was immensely happy to know he wasn't sure what the out come was going to be. That made it all the more thrilling.

Keiko watched as the energy moved forward to swallow up Hiei as well only to have the small demon yell as a blast of black-green flames collided with the energy shield. She was surprised that the shield didn't fall, a grin breaking onto her face as she watched the flames grow stronger and lick around the outside of the dome trying to push it back.

She watched as the shield dropped and the flames found the figure inside and swallowed him up in the fiery embrace. Her eyes widened in shock and fear before it turned to surprise upon seeing Touya appear behind Hiei holding a fairly large ball of energy in his hands.

He launched it quickly at the other demon knocking Hiei off balance. Just as he was about to finish the battle a small gasp caught his attention and he turned partially to see dark brown eyes staring back at him.

The ball disappeared, evaporating into the air as the young demon stepped away from the other. Hiei noticed this and followed the line of his sparring partners vision only to find Keiko sitting on the ground watching them in fascination. Pushing up to his feet he turned towards the young girl and arched an eyebrow at her in silent question.

Keiko blinked a few times trying to stamp down the odd sensation raging through her body as she had watched the fight. She had never felt like that when she had watched Yusuke fight or even Kurama so why now? Taking a deep calming breath she noticed Hiei looking at her expectantly, a small flush crept across her face.

`Ack! Did he ask a question? I can't remember!'

"What?" she asked as she stared over at him

"What are you doing here onna?" came his monotone reply

Keiko stared at him for a moment before darting her eyes towards Touya, their eyes locking for a moment before she broke it to glance back at Hiei.

"I was trying to find a place to rest. The heats getting to me and there's no where to cool down."

Hiei watched the ningen as her eyes kept straying towards the ice demon on his right. He mentally smirked before turning his head to speak to the young demon.

"Your attack took too long. Curiosity was the only thing that spared you."

That said he flitted out of sight leaving the two alone in the forest clearing.

Ice met fire.

For that was what she was in his opinion anyway. She had such fire burning inside her that he was amazed it hadn't consumed her yet. Her eyes glittered with the burning inferno from with in her soul, spreading out of her body and touching anyone that came near her. That's what it had been like the first time he had met her.

A warmth washing over his cold body and touching his frozen soul. It had felt wonderful and the emotions that radiated off of her and shone from her eyes was captivating. This is what probably got him addicted to her; it was the warmth she gave so freely. It was also why he hung around their group a lot, why he hung around in the ningen world. Forestalling his solitude to be around this small human that housed such a fire that the intensity of its flames had touched his frozen soul.

He let his eyes trail over her body taking in the sight of her knowing that he wouldn't get that many chances. Her soft voice broke him from his musings and he locked gazes with a pair of deep brown eyes.

"Gomen nasai, I didn't mean to interrupt your sparring with Hiei."

"It is fine."

He watched as she licked her lips and lowered her eyes from his before glancing back up. She opened her mouth ready to speak again and he found he didn't want to hear her say good-bye so instead he spoke.

"Why did you come here?"

He watched, as she looked somewhat surprised before a grin broke out on to her face.

"Well I was at the beach earlier but it was too crowded and there was a shark spotting so I left to go somewhere else to try and cool down."

He took a step closer, his gaze never leaving hers.

"And from there?"

He watched her look at him curiously before shrugging slightly and continuing.

"The ice cream vendor only he didn't have any. Then I went to the public pool, it was too crowded so I came here to try and find shade but there isn't any."

"Are you hot?"

Keiko stared at him wondering what kind of question was that? Of course she was hot, it was probably a hundred and two out and he was acting as though it was only seventy.

"Extremely so, if the rest of the week is like this I'm not sure what I'm going to do about staying cool."

Touya watched the girl before him as she stood up and began to brush the grass and dirt off her pants. His eyes lingering a little longer than necessary on certain parts before sliding back up to her face, stopping on her lips.

He had discovered a long time ago that he wanted this creature. She seemed to posses something he was lacking and the longer he studied her to figure it out the more his obsession grew until he decided that in order to figure it out he would have to posses her. That if his curiosity was ever satiated, which probably wasn't possible, that he would still desire her because of the warmth that she gave. He noticed she was looking at him expectantly and he guessed he just missed a question.

"I could help you."

Keiko blinked at him for a moment trying to figure out what he was talking about. She had asked him what he was going to do and he answered with that.

`What does he mean `help me'? Like help me cool off? But I don't see how?'

When she only stood there he closed the little bit of distance between them and cupped her cheek. It was instantaneous; the heat seared his icy hand causing the most wonderful sensations to ripple through him.

While Keiko could only gasp at the sudden action and the feeling of his cool hands on her heated flesh. She moaned she couldn't help it, it just felt so good on her hot skin that she had to.

Touya's eyes snapped open when he heard the small moan escape her. When had he closed his eyes? Snapping out of his thoughts he turned his gaze back to the young woman, she was leaning into his palm her body unconsciously trying to get closer to his own.

"Keiko."

"Hmm…" she said as her lids drooped down father while her hands snaked around his arm to pull him closer.

She could feel the cool air hitting her body so she tried to pull him closer, desperately seeking the relief from the heat surrounding her. She was so centered on trying get the cool air closer to her heated flesh she didn't think about what effect it was causing on the ice demon.

Touya watched mesmerized as her hands glided up his arm pulling him closer to her. Her arms resting for a moment on his shoulders before taking a step closer to him closing what little gap there had been.

She didn't seem to realize just what she was doing to him as she slipped her arms around his neck pulling there bodies together her head tipping forward to rest on his shoulder as a tiny sigh of pleasure escaped her full pink lips.

Not wanting to say anything to ruin this moment but not wishing to break his honor he shifted to move back only to have her hug him tighter and pull him closer. Her soft body molding to his own as his arm lifted up from his side and snaked around her waist holding her fast as if she would turn and run.

He let his hands roam over her backside taking in the gentle slope and curve of her hip as his hands moved around to the front before resting back on her hip, his thumb tracing circles on her warm skin. He watched her sigh before moving closer to him a small smile gracing her features.

He continued to trace her skin while he slowly bent his head down, his lips hovering just centimeters above her own. Their breath intermingling causing a small mist to form between them, glancing once more at her for any sign of protest and finding none he closed the small gap between their lips.

It was like the first spark of a fire. The heat rushed through his cold veins as his lips moved lightly over her warm ones. Tracing her bottom lip with the tip of his tongue before pulling it into his mouth to suckle on he let his right hand wander from her side. Sliding under her shirt leaving a cool path up her skin as it trailed up and around to her back pulling her flush against his body.

Keiko moaned opening her mouth to let his curious tongue inside. It swept over her teeth and the sides of her warm cavern before sliding over her own tongue engaging it in an erotic dance of flesh, foreshadowing what was soon to come.

Moving her hands along the expanse of his shoulders she slipped one down his arm while the other moved down his back to side around to the front and move up his chest, the muscles jerking under her light touch. Growling in frustration he tugged at it with his teeth before dipping his tongue inside licking his way back up.

Keiko moaned the sensations assaulting her body were killing her. The desire to be near the cool air that at the same time was causing such a fire to swell inside her. She was so caught up in the sensations and feelings that it took a few moments to realize that he had stopped. Her eyes opened slowly, their depths full of desire and confusion. Glancing up she felt her arousal heighten even more when she saw lust and desire lurking in his ice cold depths. Not sure why he stopped she moved towards him only to be stopped.

"Touya?" came the soft question

"Keiko…do you-I have to know before I continue because once I begin I will not wish to stop." Came the husky reply

"Who asked you to stop?"

That was all it took to send his mouth crashing back onto hers. It wasn't the soft exploratory kiss from before. This one was filled with all his lust and desire that had been kept in check.

Long slender fingers tugged gently at the band holding his hair in place. With one final tug the band fell away to let loose the small ponytail and free his hair. "Touya…I'm still hot." Came the half moan half whimper from the girl below him

Keiko brushed the bangs away from her faces as she survey the shop before her. She was looking for a new bathing suit, having lost the other one. She was about to go in when a cheery voice from behind caught her attention.

"Botan!" came the happy exclamation

"Keiko what a surprise! What are you doing out in this heat?" Botan asked as she came up beside the young girl

"Oh the heat doesn't bother me as much anymore."

"Really? Well it does for me, how can you stand it?" Asked the blue haired deity

"Just found a way to cool off." She said a grin spreading across her face.

Botan watched as the younger girl walked away, her large violet eyes trying to figure out what was different about the young ningen girl but unable to find anything. Shrugging she turned and walked back towards Genkai's to meet up with the others.

Had she of looked more closely she would have noticed the slight chill and faint blue aura surrounding her. She would have also spotted the unusual tattoo on her lower back, one would claim it to be a small snowflake.
