Chapter 9: A Chance Encounter

She couldn't see her attacker but she knew he was still following. The vampire's primal desire for human blood was force that drove these monsters down to their very core. They would relentlessly give chase until their prize was won. When they could finally pounce upon their prey and savor the sweet nectar of the chosen victim. This particular vampire was no exception. How could she ever hope to survive?
No escape.
He would pursue her relentlessly until he accomplished his objective. She had always known, in the back of her mind, of the possibility this would happen. But, until now, a part of her had always believed that some how she would be able to put off the inevitable. She had always hoped with a little luck she would be able to cheat the grim reaper. Even as she felt the muscles in her legs begin to give out those two words played over in her mind.
No escape.
If only things had been different. If only she had gotten there sooner maybe she could have saved her friend. It was ironically funny how things turned out. They say that hind sight is twenty twenty. Well this was hardly an exception to the rule.
Her heart raced in a wild rhythm in her chest, feet pounding the soft earth below her. Ragged gasps of breath were forced into her lungs as she tried to keep her already tired muscles from giving out. She saw the small root sticking out of the ground but it was to late. Her foot caught the protruding piece of wood and she was sent flying towards the ground. A feral shriek echoed through the air and she forced herself up before the fear in her mind could keep her rooted on the spot.
No escape.
A strong hand grabbed her by the back of the shirt and pulled back hard. Her head was pulled to the side, sharp teeth tore through soft flesh in her neck. 'It can't end this way. I have to warn her.' Quiet sobs of desperation racked her body as she tried to ward off her attacker. 'Somebody. Anybody. Please save me.' Her whole body still ached from the man's brutal attacks, but somehow she had to break free.
A sudden wave a dizziness passed over her as she felt the life draining out of her body. The world around her began to fade and blur, a weightless feeling swept over her. Just as she was finally giving herself into the dark abyss of her waiting death, the force of gravity took over, sending her body forcefully towards the ground.
Even with her vision blurred she could still make out the outline of a man in black holding a sword. He was saying something but she couldn't understand a word that came out of his mouth.
===========================================
In the early hours of the morning, just before the sun was to rise, Hiei made his way towards his sister's room. She was resting peacefully as he made his way through the door. Kuwabara was still sitting by her side and Yusuke was trying to reassure him they would find Fayth soon and Yukina would be back to her normally cheerful self. No matter how much Hiei loathed the fact Kuwabara was in love with his sister he knew Yukina was truly happy around him. That's what was important. Of course he would be damned if he would ever give the boy any slack. It was a matter of his principles. Yukina was a pure soul and, in his opinion, nobody would ever be good enough for her.
He looked over her hoping to find some kind of movement. But no such luck. Even though he knew it was pointless the underlying need to see her as full of life as always was still present.
As a small feeling of depression tried to worm into his mind, Hiei decided now was a good time as any to get some fresh air. A short trek through the forest behind the temple was exactly what he needed. With one last look he made his way out the door.
He chose a tree not that far away, just in case there was any change, to try to clear his mind. Suddenly an appearance of a woman running caught his attention. She was being chased by someone. The man was obviously faster than her, but no match for his speed. Normally he wouldn't have gotten himself involved but this was the exact distraction he needed right now.
The man grabbed the girl forcefully and bit down into the artery in her neck. Pulling out his katana, Hiei walked up to the man stopping just a few feet behind him. "Such a pathetic creature."
Dropping the girl to the ground, he looked towards Hiei, laughing as he did so. "Tsk, tsk that wasn't very smart. You had the element of surprise but not any more. A mistake that will forfeit your life."
Hiei took a step forward. "Ch." Disappearing in a flash of black, one precisely made cut was made as he faded back into focus facing away from the man. Half a second later his head fell to the ground with a muffled thud, soon followed by his body.
Hiei finally took the time to look over at the woman. Apparently she had sustained numerous injuries long before she got this far. A long bruise covered the left side of her face and there was blood on her clothing that had long since dried. He knew he if she didn't get medical help she would not survive. First he need to make sure she stayed awake.
"I'm going to get you some help but I need you to stay awake." She didn't respond. He assumed that she was already going into shock. Fortunately he was still relatively close to the temple. Not that he cared to carry her back there, but going to the hospital was out of the question. Not only would it cause too many questions to arise but he wasn't in any kind of mood to deal with that many humans. If Kurama had been there then there was a slim possibility he might have gone along. Truth be told he began to wonder why he had even decided to help her in the first place. Perhaps he's been spending to much time around Kurama, the detective and that annoying idiot Yusuke calls a friend.
In a swift motion he picked he limp body off the ground and headed for the temple. It didn't take long before he was through the doors calling Botan over to heal her.
"Hiei what happened? You didn't attack the poor girl did you? You know if Koenma was to find out that you've been causing trouble it's all he would need to revoke your probation."
He just glared daggers at her face as she spoke. He didn't need this aggravation now. "Woman as if I have nothing better to do with my time then to attack pathetically weak humans."
She snorted at his remark. "You don't have to be so rude about it you know. A simple yes or no would have been fine."
Hiei wasn't about to get himself into a pointless fight with the woman. So he decided using his most common response to any given situation would be more affective. "Hn."
Botan just turned her attention back towards the girl. When the majority of her injuries were healed she finally turned back towards Hiei. "So who was it? It wasn't another demon was it?"
He stood in his usual spot near the door with his arms crossed and his characteristic scowl etched on his face. "No."
"Do you know who it was then?"
"No."
"Well your just a ray of sunshine aren't you?"
He was going to respond when the girl's mumbling killed the words even before they could leave his mouth. Only three things came out clear. Fayth, danger and jewel, then she fell unconscious.
Hiei knew this was something the fox would be interested in. Using the jagan he located Kurama at home and sent a telepathic message to his friend.

Kurama had left the archives with more question then when he went in. Now on top of the mystery that was Fayth and the slayer he also had to wonder why Koenma would give all documentation of the slayer over to Sesshoumaru.
He was relaxing in bed when he got a sudden message from Hiei. 'We have a situation here that might interest you.'
'Is Yukina alright?'
'She's resting.'
'So what's this about?'
'I found a girl that was being attacked. I brought he back to the temple so Botan could heal her.'
'Oh. Developed a sudden need to help humans have we?'
'Not funny fox.'
'I apologize. What seems to be the problem?'
'The girl was mumbling something before she passed out. But I only could make out three word.'
'What was that? Psycho, black and sword.'
'Kurama.'
'Sorry. You know you make it far too easy for me sometimes.'
'This isn't the time. She said Fayth, danger and jewel. Do you have any idea what they could mean?'
'Fayth?'
'I knew that would catch your attention. So what does it mean?'
'I don't know but I'll be there as soon as I can.'
============================================
Yusuke left Yukina's room stretching his tired muscles. With a loud yawn he made his way towards the main entrance. It had been one hell of a week and if he didn't get some damn rest soon somebody was going to hear about it. Not that he would ever complain when it came to the safety of his friends, but Koenma definitely owed his some serious vacation time.
As he entered the room the first thing he noticed was Hiei staring off into space. At least to the casual observer that's how it would seem. Yusuke knew better though. Hiei never was one to let his guard down for long, even among friends. No, he probably was having a mental conversation with Kurama.
Looking towards Botan he noticed she was looking over to Hiei with a frown on her face. Apparently they must of had words again about something one of them said. It wasn't as common of an occurrence as it was with Kuwabara and Hiei. Though that's not to say it never happened.
Finally the other half of his brain kicked in and realized there was a girl asleep on the floor next to Botan. 'Huh? What the?' "Hey Botan who is that?"
"Oh, Yusuke. I didn't even hear you come in."
"Yeah well... So who is that?"
"I don't know really. Hiei brought her here a couple of minutes ago. She had been attacked and was in pretty bad shape."
"Hiei? Helping a human girl of his own free will? No orders form Koenma or anything?"
"No. He brought her here and asked me to heal her."
"I was right."
"Right about what exactly?"
"The word is going to hell and no one bothered to let me know."
"Yusuke that's no very funny."
"If you say so. I don't suppose you thought to check if the girl had any kind of I.D. with her?"
"Well I wasn't exactly thinking about going through her pockets when Hiei brought her in."
"Bite my head off why don't you." Sitting down next to the girl he went into one of her pocket and pulled out a wallet and a cellular phone.
"Yusuke! What do you think you're doing? You can't just go pick through somebody's pockets."
"Hey trust me. I don't think she's going to complain. Besides we need to know who she is right?"
"..."
Opening the wallet he notice there wasn't any kind of identification but there was a picture of the girl standing next to someone else. 'Hey that's the girl from the park.' Flipping it over he saw something written on the back. It said: Best friends forever. Kilmara and Fayth aka the terror twins Trixie and Foxy. "No freaken way. It's the same damn girl. We saw her and didn't even know she was the one."
"Who was the one?"
Yusuke handed the picture to Botan. She studied it for a moment before giving him a funny look. "I don't get what the big deal is."
"Turn it over and read the back. Fayth is the other girl in the picture. Remember that night in the park I told you about? Kurama and I met her. We didn't know it was her at the time but I'm positive it's the same person."
"Please tell me you're joking. This can't be right. You actually met her before you even knew Yukina was going to need her help."
"Yeah well I've always had a feeling there was some divine being out there looking down on my life laughing his ass off. This only proves me right... So how long do you think it will take Kurama to hightail it over here?"
"I don't know a half an hour to forty five minutes maybe. Why do ask?"
"I'll bet you a hundred yen he makes it here in twenty."
"You're both wrong. I give him fifteen minutes tops."
Yusuke just smiled at Hiei not bothering to say anything. Hell for all he knew the demon was probably right.
'Of course I am. When will you people learn that?'
'Will you stay the hell out of my head. That's why they're called personal thoughts Hiei.'
'I wasn't in your mind. You were the one broadcasting your thoughts so don't blame me for over hearing.'
'Smart ass.'
============================================
Kurama changed and left the house making his way to the temple. Taking a short cut he made it there in record time. As he walked through the door three sets of eyes were all focused on him. It was leaving him with an uneasy feeling until Yusuke finally spoke.
"Ha ha. I guess Hiei was right."
"Right, Kurama said, about what?"
Botan waved a dismissive hand "Oh it's nothing you need to worry about." She really didn't want to explain to Kurama why they were betting on how long it took him to get there. "Any way Hiei found this girl and it would seem she has a connection to Fayth."
"Yes Hiei told me the girl said her name before passing out."
"No, that's no exactly what I was talking about." She walked over to him handing the picture over. "This was in her personal belongings. The back of the photo say best friends forever. Kilmara and Fayth aka the terror twins Trixie and Foxy. She also had a cell phone on her but I don't think that will be of any use."
Kurama walked over and picked it up. Perhaps if their luck held out it could be of more use to them then Botan realized. "I'm not sure if it will work but perhaps we may have a means of contacting Fayth now." Turning the phone on he pushed the redial button and held it up to his ear mentally crossing his fingers as he waited for a response. It didn't take long before there was a voice on the other end. "Damn it Kilmara this better be important because if you think--"
Kurama let a breath out he didn't even know he had been holding. "Sorry but this isn't Kilmara."
There was a pregnant silence that stretched before she spoke again. "Who the hell are you and what have you done to her?"
"My name is Kurama. I assure you your friend is safe and my friends and I mean her no harm."
"You again. I find it hard to believe that's a coincidence this time. How did you get her phone. I have caller ID so don't bother trying to lie to me. Where is she I want to talk to her."
"She was attacked earlier this morning and a friend of mine brought her here. That's when her phone was discovered. I used the redial button in hopes of finding someone to come get her. She is resting as we speak."
"I don't believe you. Where are you now? I'll come get her."
"I don't suppose you are familiar with the temples in the area?"
"No. I'm not. How about I meet you at the park where we first met?"
"Yes that will be fine. Is an hour from now acceptable?"
"That's fine. Don't be late."
The phone suddenly went dead and Yusuke gave him a look as if to say - do you really know what the hell you're doing - ?

End chapter 9. Hope you liked it.
The pairings still remain the same as of now. Get your reviews in while you can. As I've said before even though it may look like she is going to be with Kurama but she hasn't met Hiei yet. It can go any way so if you have any suggestions on pairing now is the time.
