About four years ago, Kurama's mother Shiori adopted a baby girl named Kaori.

When the social worker, an old school friend of Shiori's, drove up to their house on a Sunday afternoon to deliver the young child to her new home and took her out of the car, Kurama instantly fell in love with her. She was just so cute!

She had rich chocolate brown eyes that sparkled with life and laughter, soft curly brown hair reaching down to her shoulders, a round chubby baby face and creamy white skin.

Nina, the girls' social worker, placed her on her feet on the sidewalk leading up to the Minamino's front door. The toddler stumbled a bit then stood upright on small wobbly legs. As Kurama and his mother came out to greet the two, Kaori took one look at the two strangers walking towards her with big smiles on their faces and with a small `eep' hid behind Nina.

"Hello Nina." Greeted Shiori, beaming with joy at the prospect of seeing her old friend and new daughter. "Oh, it's so good to see you again!" She said as the two friends embraced.

"It's good to see you too, Shiori." Nina said. "Hello Shuichi, how have you been? I haven't seen you since you were seven I think."

"Yes, I believe that's about right. I've been doing just fine, thank you Nina."

"Shiori, how did you wind up with such a proper kid? My son isnt like that. No fair." She pouted.

Shiori laughed at her friend. "I don't know. I guess I just got lucky."

"Hmm. Well don't expect the same luck with this one. She's a handful. Sweet but exhausting." Nina was looking down at the child clinging to her navy blue skirt with an affectionate smirk on her lips. "Sure, she looks sweet and innocent now but just wait. She's very smart for her age and clever to boot. She'll keep you on your toes all right."

Kaori, who had been peeking up at Kurama and Shiori from behind Nina's legs suddenly hid her face into them when they turned to look at her.

"She's always a little shy when meeting new people," Nina said, "But trust me, she gets over it fast."

Shiori smiled and knelt down in front of the frightened child so that she was at eye-level with her. "HI, Kaori," she said in a soft, gentle voice, "I'm going to be your new mommy. She gestured to Kurama and said " And this is Shuichi, he's going to be your new brother."

"Yeah Kaori," said Nina, " Your gonna have a big brother to look after you now."

Kaori was staring up at the red haired boy with wide eyes and her mouth opened in the shape of a small 'O'. Then she moved her eyes to focus on Shiori again, who now was holding her hand out to Kaori.

" Why don't you come inside and I'll fix you up a little snack." She said. Kaori hesitated and looked up at Nina as though asking her if it was all right to go with this strange new woman. Nina smiled and nodded down at her. Kaori looked again at Kurama, then back to Shiori. Then, finally, she took Shiori's hand.

Shiori smiled, obviously pleased that she had accepted her offer. Then before she could take a step, the small child rushed forward and wrapped her short littele arms around her waits. She looked up at her and started jumping up and down, reaching up indicating that she wanted to be picked up.

Shiori, Kurama and Nina all laughed as Shiori swept her new daughter up into her arms and hugged her " I told you," Nina said, still laughing. " She gets over it fast."
