My face contorted with a sense of boredom, the emotion swelling deep within me and slowly rising to the surface of what we call a mental breakdown. The teacher droned on with her lesson, she had lost half the class in the middle of her speech about the evolution of man. Of course, some how it turned into an ever so personal story about her and her lovely husband and how they can never agree on what color to pain the bathroom. Just as the realm of my dreams was sweeping over me, setting me free from this unexplainable nightmare, the bell rang. Gathering my things into my book bag I set out, crossing my arms over my chest, I left the building, not bothering to wait for my older brother in the process.
`I just need some time to think; perhaps I'll take the long route home'
In my time staying at master Genkai's temple, many events in my life had caused me to change, everyday I was struck with a different wave of emotions. This caused me to search for the best way home, so I developed the short cut, and the long route, both of which I rarely used except for on some occasions. Surprisingly this very day I had no need to get back home quickly, I just wanted some time to myself in order to get in the day dreaming I had missed out on during class. The deserted sidewalk I had taken refuge on led me to an open field; I admired how it stretched on for miles, completely perfect. As if not a single soul had set foot on its terrain. But then something caught my eye, one mere chain link fence dividing the field straight down the middle, I squinted my eyes and peered in to get a better look.
`Damn I can't see'
I glanced over the untouched grass, and hated to press down on it with my dirtied up shoes, but curiosity got the better of me, and I set off through the field. I suppose in this case instead of the cat, curiosity killed the fox. As I made my way over to the fence I placed my hand on it, intertwining my fingers through the chain pattern, I looked through. Nothing but deserted land on the other side. Which made me wonder, why would they set up a fence to prevent someone from reaching something that isn't even there? I walked alongside it, brushing my fingers on it as I did so, then spotted a hole in the fence, right where the ground was, it was as if someone tore through it in order to escape to the other side. I arched my brow and bent down; examining the tear in the seemingly perfect fence they had built. I looked around, making sure there was no one around to see me breaking whatever rule they had set up that involved this fence.
`What the hell?'
I thought to myself and kneeled down on one knee, then pressed myself onto my stomach as I crawled under and to the other side of the fence. I squeezed my eyes shut as a rush of burning cold, licked at my face; I grunted and struggled under the fence, before reaching the other side. Cold air whipped around my body, I clutched myself and shivered, I opened my eyes, only to be greeted by a city, not the one I was currently living in obviously. The ground was covered by a blanket of snow, in which I was sitting in; I shakily stood, trembling as I was not properly dressed for this kind of weather. I gritted my teeth together as shards of ice cut lightly against my face, I looked behind me to see I was in an alley way, and what looked like the same chain link fence behind me. Only it was a small section of it, the section with the hole.
“What the hell happened?” I asked myself as I looked at my surrounding; I was definitely not here just a few mere seconds ago. I slowly took big steps out of the alley, and was greeted by an open street, no one was outside, I suppose I knew why. The clouds were dark and grey, the sky was pouring with ice and snowflakes, the weather was not very friendly. As I breathed a puff of smoke followed, creating a perfect ring in the air, I looked back and forth and stepped out. Seeing nothing except for tall buildings and empty streets and sidewalks, then something grabbed my attention. The silhouette of a person before me, possibly a small child sitting against the building in front of me, I stepped closer to them, in order to figure out who it was.
“Uhhh….hello?”
I was alarmed by a pair of blue/green eyes that much resembled my own; they burned into me with an emotionless gaze. My heart pounded, a small droplet of sweat trickling down the side of my face as I stared upon the figure before me.
“Can…can you help me?”
I asked, they said nothing, only look down the street then back at me.
“Run away…” They whispered and stood, the person was only about up to just above my waist, it indeed was a child. The glimmer of the moonlight peeked out from between the moving clouds, illuminating the street so I could now find out the identity of this person. My eyes widened, she had my color eyes, short, crimson hair that reached almost down to her shoulders, and she had the same exact facial features as I did. The girl wore nothing but an oversized t-shirt with short, black shorts. I placed a hand on my cheek, admiring the young girl who looked precisely like me, then reached my hand out to touch her face. Just as my fingers were about to caress her face, I heard loud yelling coming from down the street.
“WHERE IS THE GIRL?!?!?!”
I gasped as the girl turned to me once more.
“Run away!!!” She yelled in a more frantic tone and bolted off down the street; I watched her and then turned back to the direction of the noise. A group of demons came bounding down the street; I raced after the small girl, with my long red hair flowing behind me. She was not far ahead and darted down another street, I followed close behind her.
“WAIT!!!”
I called, she froze and looked at me like I was crazy, I met up with her and we once again engaged in a staring contest.
“What's your name?” I asked her, she blinked and cocked an eyebrow at me.
“Sarah Urameshi.” She replied, my breath hitched.
“Really? That's my name too.”
She opened her mouth to say something when a dagger pierced her in the side, embedding itself deep into her tender flesh. Sarah collapsed to the ground, coughing up crimson liquid as the blood streamed down from her wound. Creating a large puddle around her small frame, I gasped and stumbled back, trying as hard as possible to keep my balance so I wouldn't fall over. My heart pounded in my ears as I saw her laying there, the demons approached quickly over to us.
“THERE SHE IS!!!!!”
I looked back and forth from them to her; I rushed to her side, kneeling down on one knee, I curled my fingers around the handle of the sharp dagger.
“This is going to hurt a bit ok?”
Sarah merely turned her head to face me and nodded, clenching her tiny hands into fists.
“Grah!!!” And at that I ripped the blade out of her side, she yelled out in agony and the flow of blood poured out onto my fingers, drenching them. I scooped her up into my arms and sped down the street, daggers and swords came flying at me from behind as the demons advanced closer and closer to us. I shrieked in pain as a sword sliced me in my Achilles tendon, blood gushed out; I was not able to walk on that foot, causing me to have to drag my leg along. A trail of crimson liquid followed from my heel, lugging the child along with me as the demons came closer, closer then I realized. With a swing to the back I skidded to the ground, Sarah falling out of my arms in the process.
“GAH!!!” The demons approached us, walking passed me without a second glance; they grabbed Sarah and threw her against the wall.
“NO!!!” I yelled, feeling pressure against my back as soon as she hit the wall hard, she coughed up more blood, and I felt a trail of warmth drip down my chin from my mouth. I spit it out, only to see that it was blood, I trembled as I watched the demons have their way with Sarah. I couldn't get up to just walk over, my heel was now disabled.
“Now for your punishment girl” One of them growled and they punched her multiple times, she yelled out in pain, I felt massive pressure in all parts of my body. These being all the parts that they were hitting on her frail body. I gritted my teeth in pain and could only observe from the sidelines, the man who seemed to be that of a wolf demon, grabbed her arm in a tight hold, and with the flick of his wrist there was a loud cracking sound that filled the air. Her arm curved into a not so normal fashion, my eyes widened as she screeched as loud as she could. And then I was met with an agonizing rush of pain that shot through my arm and they were met with a scream of my own.
“AAAAHHHHH FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
I held my arm and growled out in pain, the mob turned to me, cackling as they admired how I screamed. I was obviously not their main target, but knowing them I was going to be next. Sarah was unconscious on the ground, I stared at her sprawled out body, pools of blood forming around her once more. As I saw this waves of memories washed over me, my eyes widened and I felt a chill go up and down my spine. I remembered all of this, this was my past, and I remembered this very day and every single thing that occurred in it. My heart raced, I panted, I struggled to pick myself up off the floor but did it anyway, hopping as fast as I could away from them on one foot. They smirked and walked towards me, I knew I wasn't going to get far from them using this tactic, my eyes turned white as I levitated the ground from under me into the air. Carrying me along with it, I searched frantically for the alley way from which I had emerged from. Spotting it I soared down and landed with a loud thump onto the snow coated ground, I crawled to the fence and through the hole, coming out the other side. I shut my eyes and felt a warm rush hit my cheeks, causing them to redden more from what they had become in the cold. I coughed and panted as I opened my eyes and looked around, only to see the vast field that was their originally before I decided to get curious.
“What the fuck?!?!?”
I snapped, questions swirled around in my brain, thoughts raced as I trembled in my spot. The grass was now stained with my ever pouring blood, I squeaked in pain as I stood on one foot. With no support from anything or anyone I struggled into the forest, deep enough to where I reached the temple.
“Damn stairs…” I growled and crawled up, dragging my foot along. I clenched my hand into a fist and banged on the door for someone to open it, the door slid open only to reveal Yusuke, my brother, standing there.
“Sis?!?!” He yelled out in shock, I coughed up some more blood so it spattered onto his shoe, he cringed.
“Help me….get inside.” I told him, he nodded and pulled me up, snaking my arm around his neck so he could help me hop inside. Yusuke sat me on the couch and called for the other's, including for Yukina do to the healing. She screeched a little in surprise as she saw the blood dripping from my ankle, dirtying the carpet, she propped it up on the table in from of me and I yelped in pain.
“Sorry, it shouldn't hurt very much in a little bit alright?”
I did nothing but nod my head.
“What happened to you? Where were you after school? You didn't wait for me.” Yusuke asked, I shook my head rapidly.
“I just got bored and tired of waiting, I went for the long route because I had the DESIRE to think for a while, when I spotted this mother fucking fence, it was in the middle of a god damn FIELD which makes no sense because NOTHING WAS IN IT!!!!!!!”
Yusuke arched his brow as I rambled on about the stupid fence and how it was completely random, he decided to sit down because my stories tended to get a little wild at times.
“Fence?”
“Yes FENCE, I saw it in the middle of this field, it was completely deserted and there was this chain link fence going straight through the middle of it, I decided to check it out, BIG MISTAKE, I saw this hole in it and crawled under it to see what was on the other side and…”
I paused there, looking to the floor as I contemplated all of the events that had taken place just on the other side of that fence. In the time that I had been going on in my story the others had arrived, including Melissa, whom was Yusuke's girlfriend, Kurama, Kuwabara, and Hiei, my mate. They listened in to what I was yelling about; it didn't make any sense to them as far as it went.
“Sis, what was on the other side of the fence?” Yusuke persisted, wanting to know where I got all of these wounds from. I stared at Yukina, she was still fixing up my heel and it was feeling better by the second.
“Onna.” Hiei stated, I look to him and he nodded for me to keep going, I opened my mouth to speak but nothing came out. I took a while to gather my scattered thoughts before saying another word.
“Well, it wasn't a field on the other side like you would have guessed, when I crawled under it I was some how transported to the….past.”
“The past?” Yusuke asked me, I nodded.
“Yeah, it was snowing and I saw myself as a little girl, I was running away from these demons but I was trying to help myself get away, I watched my younger self get beat the hell out of, feeling all of the pain that came with it…and then I remembered, that was an event from my past…I was somehow sent back to a time from my past.”
I explained, the room swept over with silence as they glanced at one another, obviously not comprehending what I just said.
“The fence is some sort of entrance to the past!” I added in so they would understand better.
“HAHAHAHA THAT IS SO STUPID!!!!!” Kuwabara started cracking up, I paled, feeling like a complete idiot. Yusuke arched a brow and shrugged while looking to Melissa, she did back and it was obvious they were having a telepathic conversation.
“How is that even possible Sarah, a fence is a portal to the past?” Melissa asked me; it wasn't that she didn't believe me, to her it just sounded a little off. Hiei turned to Kurama, they were also engaged in their own little telepathic conversation, I could tell by their expressions.
`Does that sound familiar to you Hiei?'
`Hn. Yeah it does, but I didn't know that was here.
`Nor did I, perhaps we should go ask Koenma about it.'
`What about Sarah?'
Hiei asked him, glancing over at me with a glimmer of worry in his eyes. I was the only person he ever bothered to worry or care about; we had been together for a long time and were very in love with each other since we had been through a lot with one another.
`All we can do for her now is ask her about it and calm her down, worrying will only make the matter worse and you know it.'
`Hn. Right.'
Hiei replied and went to sit next to me on the couch, placing his arm around my shoulders as he did so.
“Hn. Onna calm down, we'll figure this out.”
I looked to Kurama who nodded as well and walked to the other side of the room, with enough space to create a portal.
“I am going to go to Koenma and ask him if he knows anything about this.”
“Alright.” I said and watched him as he vanished through the swirling portal, I didn't know what else to do, and Kuwabara made me feel like a fucking moron for believe that this mere fence could be the entrance to come sort alternate dimension. He was still laughing about it, Melissa smacked him upside the head, sending him crashing to the floor.
“OWWWWIIIIEEE!” He yelled out in pain, she glared at him and went to go sit with Yusuke; he was staring at me with worry written all over his face.
“You alright sis?”
“NO!!! I don't know if it was even real I mean what if the idiot has a point, what if it is stupid or what if I hit my head on something and only imagined everything!”
Hiei tightened his grip on me, he had a hunch about what I could have been through but wasn't quite sure, he was going to wait for the news from Koenma before he got me hyped up about anything of the sort.
“I guess we just have to wait then won't we?” Melissa added, we said nothing but we all knew the answer as we sat in the dead silence, waiting for Kurama's return. But all I could think of was what I had experienced once more after crossing over to the other side of that god forsaken fence.
