Chapter Eight: Demon-Made Lunch
It was still cold outside, but luckily we didn't stay outside for very long. Kurama teleported the both of us to his place.
"Mother's out at the moment," Kurama told me. "But she knew that I might be bringing you over."
"Okay." I wasn't quite sure what Kurama was trying to say, but it was nice information to know.
"Now I want you to come sit down over here," Kurama said, guiding me into a dining room. "I'll be back in a few minutes." With that said, his disappeared into another room.
I shrugged my shoulders and took a look around me. The dining room was very simple, but pretty as well. The table was mahogany with a neat, clean, white tablecloth. The walls were a cream color, and the carpet was a rich green. Beautiful landscape paintings hung on the walls, and a china cabinet rested in the corner.
After waiting for a few minutes in the lovely room, Kurama came back with two plates, silverware, and two glasses of water. He set one of each thing in front of me and put the rest in the spot right next to me. He left again and returned with a covered dish. Whatever was in that dish smelled wonderful. Kurama left for a third time and came back with a salad and candles.
"Kurama, what is all this?" I asked him, gazing at everything with wonder. He had done all this for me?
"Shush," he replied, putting a finger to his lips. Getting out a lighter, he lit the two candles and then turned out all the lights.
"Kurama?" I repeated, watching him as he sat down. "What's going on?"
"This is your surprise," Kurama told me. "I made the meal from scratch, and I want you to enjoy it."
I looked at him with amazement. He had gone and cooked something just for the two of us? How sweet! "Kurama, this is amazing. You are one of the sweetest guys I have ever met. This is so phenomenal that it's almost unbelievable." I paused to sweep my eyes over the table again. "Thank you so much!" I gave him a quick kiss.
"You're happy. Good," Kurama said. "Now, I want you to just sit there and eat. I'll take care of everything else."
"Okay," I replied, rewarding him with another smile.
Kurama smiled back and put salad on both of the plates. He gestured for me to begin eating, so I obeyed.
The salad was made of fresh lettuce, shredded cheese, and slices of cucumber. Ranch dressing lightly covered the top along with bacon bits.
"Kurama, where... why... how...?" I was having trouble forming a complete sentence. I was just in too much shock.
"I wanted to," he explained, chuckling at me. He was enjoying himself. "Although I didn't think that you'd act so amazed."
"I wasn't expecting all this," I told him, finishing off my salad. "But I must admit, I like the surprise. Thank you."
Kurama smiled at me. He looked pleased with himself. "I believe you've already said that."
"Oh," I said shyly, blushing slightly. I seemed to have done more blushing around Kurama in the past few weeks than I had in my entire life.
"Would you like to go onto the main dish?" he asked me, gesturing towards the dish. He had finished off his salad as well.
I nodded my head. "Yes, please." I was curious to taste what smelled so good. My mouth was watering already.
Kurama uncovered the dish and scooped some of the food onto my plate. Then, he put some of the main course on his own plate.
The main course resembled lasagna, but it was also different. The sauce was much darker, and there were mushrooms and differently shaped noodles in it.
I picked up a small piece with my fork and put it in my mouth. I chewed, then swallowed.
"Well?" Kurama asked, sounding curious and a little worried.
I slowly turned to him. I waited a moment, then let a smile break out on my face. "It tastes absolutely heavenly, Kurama!" Whatever the stuff was, it was my new favorite food. "Congrats on making an excellent dish."
"I made up the recipe myself, so I wasn't exactly sure how it would turn out," Kurama admitted.
"You have a knockout here," I told him, taking another bite. "I haven't ever had anything this good. It ranks right up there with chocolate."
"Then you must like it very much," he said, looking very proud of himself. He had a right to be proud. The meal was awesome. He had to have worked very hard on it.
"I'll have to cook for you sometime in return," I stated, setting down my fork to take a sip of water. "Although it could never compare to this meal."
"I'm not sure about that," Kurama responded, covering my hand with his. "If you can cook half as well as my mother, then you'll have me beat easily."
"I guess that I'll just have to try and see what happens," I replied.
We continued to talk until the meal was done. Kurama almost didn't let me help clean up, but I insisted until he allowed me to. There wasn't that many dishes, and I enjoyed helping him.
Finally, I brought up the subject of Hiei's strange behavior.
"Kurama, do you know what's up with Hiei?" I asked him as I dried a dish. "He's been acting really strangely. Are you two fighting or something? The both of you seemed to be... unhappy with each other."
"Hiei's having a few problems sorting out a few of his feelings," Kurama answered simply. He put away the plate I had just dried. "I'm just making sure that he doesn't sort them out the wrong way."
"I'm not sure if that's it," I continued, feeling extremely sure that he wasn't telling me something.
Kurama tweaked my nose. "Don't worry about it. Give it a few weeks and everything will be back to normal."
"Okay," I said. He was usually right about things like that. I would just wait a few weeks and then see if Hiei was still acting unusual. "Now, Kurama-"
The redhead silenced me with a kiss. When he backed away, I could see a mischievous twinkle in his eyes.
"Oh, you!" I exclaimed jokingly, laughing a little at him.
"We're going to have to do this again," Kurama stated, smiling brightly. He put away the last dish.
"Yes, we shall," I agreed whole-heartedly.
And much to my delight, he did make lunch for me again, just as I made meals for him many times. We continued to surprise each other with new recipes... some good, some bad. Overall, it was a fun, irreplaceable experience. I wouldn't trade my time with Kurama for anything in the world.
