Chapter Two
The Spirit Detective
The alarm blared and sirens flashed as a frightened voice screamed over the loud speaker.
“Code Red Emergency! Code Red!” The bodies of several guards littered the ground at the giant's feet and Gouki held another helpless demons face in the palm of his over sized hand. Hiei, Kurama, and Kayura all stood in the doorway, waiting for the ignorant brute.
“Alright Gouki, that's enough.” Hiei's voice sounded over the alarms.
“Yes, our time runs short.” Kurama sounded a bit annoyed. Kayura could understand why; the big oaf had ruined their plan for a clean getaway. The demon crushed the face of the guard in his hand and threw him to the ground with the other bodies. Gouki stared at the bodies before turning and following the three of them out of the castle. They barely made it out the doors as they closed tightly behind them. Not wanting to take any chances they kept running not stopping until they were safe back in the clearing they had convened in. Gouki let out a harsh laugh.
“Oh yes, this is perfect!” Hiei exclaimed, testing out the shadow sword on one of the nearby trees. The tree exploded in an array of bark and leaves and in it's place sat a very low level demon. It took flight briefly before landing on the ground and turning back into bark.
“If the sword can make demons from trees just think what it could make from humans. I say we go to the next big city and carve out a thousand of them. Imagine raising an entire demon army!” Hiei stated enthusiastically, pointing the sword at Gouki. Gouki chuckled maliciously.
“I like the way you think Hiei. If we teach them to eat souls I even know how we'll feed them all.” He reached into his pocket and pulled out a glowing green ball.
“The Orb of Baast!” He laughed maniacally.
“And once the moon becomes full, we can use Kurama's weapon and supposedly get complete control, isn't that right?” Hiei said, glancing over at Kurama who was leaning against a tree. He pushed himself away from it and walked into the light.
“Sorry, I must withdraw from this alliance.” Kayura had seen this coming from the beginning and she laughed inwardly at the looks on their faces. Kurama never had worked well with others, only when the purposes suited him. He held on firmly to the view that his men were expendable. All except herself and Kuronue.
“What is that supposed to mean? Surely you're not dropping out of the game when we've come this far!?” Hiei exclaimed, clearly furious.
“Yes.” Kurama stated simply. Hiei clenched his fists.
“You coward! Your years of hiding yourself in this human world have made you just like them! Spineless and ready to be walked on!” Hiei gritted out in fury. Gouki placed the orb back in his pocket and turned to Kurama.
“I don't give a flip if he leaves but he's got no right to the loot. Give us the pretty little mirror.” Gouki said, holding out his hand to Kurama.
“I can't, I have great need for it myself first.” Gouki chuckled and a smile came to his lips.
“Alright then, I'll just have to beat it outta ya!” He raised his fist and poised to swing. Kayura steadied herself on the branch in case he needed any assistance. Gouki's fist stopped an inch from Kurama's face and all four sets of eyes turned to the human boy that just walked into the clearing holding a branch over his head. Kayura recognized him as one of the ones who had interrupted her fight with those street thugs only this time he was wearing a green school uniform.
“Couldn't help but notice there's no rain falling here, maybe the next time you guy's go stealing some magic toy's, you should hide where it's not so obviously sunny. Just a tip.” Kayura smirked; the boy had quite an attitude on him. The others were not quite as amused.
“Who are you, and how do you know about the artifacts?” Hiei asked.
“Give us your name.” Gouki demanded. The boy smirked.
“Oh thank you, hoped you'd ask.” He threw down the branch he was holding and raised up a thumb, pointing at himself.
“Hello boys! The name's Yusuke, I'm a spirit detective.” He sounded rather smug. Gouki's eyes widened.
“Spirit detective?” Hiei just sneered at the newcomer.
“Don't worry, he's just one of Koenma's fools. He must have been the only human they could round up, his spirit energy is pathetic.” Kurama turned and walked off in Kayura's direction, she jumped down from her perch on the branch and tossed a glance at the detective.
“Hey, were are you going?” Yusuke yelled after Kurama's retreating form.
“Sorry, I don't have time to be arrested.” Kayura smirked and disappeared into the trees behind him. She could vaguely hear Hiei shouting in the distance before shooting off after them, leaving Yusuke alone with Gouki. Kayura turned to Kurama.
“I'll leave this fight to you, it was your decision, you should handle it.” Kurama nodded and reached out to grab her hand, pulling her into a tight embrace; one arm around her slim waist and the other holding her chin, her nose mere millimeters away from his.
“Goodnight Kayura.” He whispered before leaning in and capturing her lips in a searing kiss. It was just how she remembered, wildly passionate yet comforting at the same time. They always left her breathless. He pulled away and let go of her waist.
“You should go, I will see you in the morning.” Kayura nodded.
“In the morning.” Kayura smiled before disappearing into the forest, flitting through the trees and over the rooftops before climbing in her bedroom window. Her room was on the top floor and her balcony window faced toward the backyard so as not to alert the neighbors of her comings and goings. The walls of her room were a deep gray with black siding. The long and heavy velvet curtains hanging over her floor length balcony doors were a deep black, the under curtains an almost translucent pearl. One of the doors was cracked and the supple wind was making the soft white curtains billow into her dark room.
She slept on a queen size bed, enjoying the extra room. Sakura had inherited a lot of her mother's American tastes and her room clearly displayed it. Her large bed was covered in a heavy black velour duvet covering white silk sheets. Several silver white and black pillows were scattered about the top of her bed, she was definitely a slave to comfort. Kayura sighed and walked into her room, closing her balcony door behind her. She drew the curtains tightly closed, enveloping the large room in darkness.
Kayura flipped a switch next to the wall and hundreds of minute lights blazed on all over the room. They looked like tiny balls of light, each only illuminating a spherical two-inch radius. Sakura had a thing for lamps. They didn't provide much light in their dimmed state but it sure was a beautiful sight. Besides, Kayura preferred the dark.
“Alright Dove, time for some much needed beauty sleep.” Kayura yawned before regressing to the back of Sakura's mind. Sakura sighed and walked into the bathroom adjourning her room. She stripped off her dirty clothes and stepped into the shower, turning the water to just the right temperature. She needed to wash the demon stink off of her. She sure hoped that spirit detective hadn't bitten off more than he could chew. Gouki was a bastard, he deserved to die. It took washing her hair and body three times before the smell had completely dissipated. She certainly was not going to infest her bed with that awful demons scent. It would never come out and she would have to get new bed covers, which was not an option. Those were imports and she liked them just the way they were; Ugly demon smell free.
Sakura stepped out of the shower and wrapped a towel around herself. She concentrated her energy about her entire body and flexed it slightly, effectively drying her body and her hair. It worked much better than a blow dryer and it was a lot less time consuming than towel drying. She stepped into her room and walked over to her boudoir, opening the top drawer and pulling out her pajamas. She pulled them on and stepped over to her bed, tossing the towel down the laundry chute in her wall. She folded the duvet cover in half and climbed into bed, pulling the white sheet up around her body and falling into a deep dreamless sleep.
~*~*~
The day had gone by uneventfully as always. She was happy to see that Kurama had shown up to school devoid of any injuries. Hiei obviously decided that fighting him was not worth the risk. They had agreed to meet with the spirit detective after school. It seemed that the boy had survived, but so had Gouki. If he decided to go after Gouki again, they were sure Gouki would lose.
As it turned out they were right. One massive display of spirit energy from Yusuke and Gouki's disappearing was enough to convince them that Yusuke had won. They found him walking against a stick with several cuts and bruises all over his body. He seemed to be in a bit of an argument with his assistant. They split up, Kayura taking the high ground. She smirked at the look on the detectives face as his compass locked on to Kurama's energy signal. He spotted Kurama in the crowd, holding his ground as the spirit fox walked up to them.
“Don't worry, I have no intention of fighting you. Nor do I intend to flee, in fact, I have come to ask you a favor. “ The spirit detective looked after the fox in shock.
“Are you crazy?” He asked in mild astonishment. Kurama stopped walking.
“Give me three days, after that I will gladly return to you the forlorn hope.” He stated, resuming his walk and leaving the two to stare after him in bewilderment. Kayura stood her ground and a moment later Kurama appeared at her side.
“Can we trust him?” Kayura asked, looking after the limping boy.
“I don't believe he will try and attack me, especially not in his weakened state.” Kayura nodded.
“And three days from now?” Kurama shrugged.
“It won't really matter. I've asked him to meet me at the hospital and he has agreed. We will see then.” Kayura sighed; she had no other choice but to go along with his plan, however much she didn't like it.
She and Kurama met Yusuke outside the hospital after school three days later. He walked up with his hands in his pockets and a very confused expression on his face.
“Here we are, the hospital.” Kurama leaned off of the building as Yusuke approached however Kayura stayed where she was.
“Good, you came.” Kurama said, his hands in his pockets as he smiled at Yusuke appreciatively. Yusuke looked over at Kayura.
“Whose this, your girlfriend? She looks kinda familiar, haven't I met you somewhere before?” Yusuke asked and Kayura smirked.
“Twice, once when you `saved' me from that group of thugs, and the night we raided the sacred vault.” A look of realization crossed Yusuke's face.
“Oh yeah that's right! Koenma told me about you. Said you stole something too but not to worry about it.” Yusuke said as he flashed back to that conversation.
“Yusuke, don't go after Kayura. She's a very old demon and she is very powerful. She's way out of your league so don't even try it. The starlight swords are expendable I suppose, seeing as it was Kayura who stole them. It's of no consequence, just leave her be.”
“Yeah, said you were a very old demon, you don't look so tough.” Yusuke said, eyeing her up and down.
“Don't always believe what your eyes tell you.” Kayura said cryptically before sauntering into the hospital, Kurama watching after her.
“Don't mind Kayura, I'm afraid she's always like that. Come, I have something to show you.” Kurama said, leading the spirit detective inside the building and up to the fifth floor where Kayura was waiting outside the elevator. He directed them to a room labeled 501 and opened the door to walk in, Kayura and Yusuke following behind him. The woman in the bed sat up as they walked in the door.
“Hi there, it's been such a long time since you brought a friend with you.” Kurama rushed to the woman's side.
“It's alright mother, you don't have to sit up!” The woman just smiled at him.
“It's not so bad, I'm feeling well today.” Yusuke looked very confused at seeing that Kurama had a human mother. It was the first time Kayura had seen her herself.
“Should I peel an apple for you?” Kurama asked.
“No, I'm not hungry.” Kurama sighed.
“Please eat mother, you'll never get well without nutrition.” He explained. The woman smiled and turned her gaze to her lap.
“Yes of course, it's just hard to remember all these things Suuichi.” Yusuke face faulted at the mention of his human name and Kayura had to suppress a giggle.
“Well try hard, I need you to get well quickly.” Yusuke's confusion was increasing by the second and it almost looked as if he was about to fall over. They waited in Kurama's mother's room until she fell asleep and decided to adjourn their meeting to the roof.
“Suuichi is the name I've taken in my human form. That woman is my mother, sort of. My father past away years ago. For fifteen years she has brought me up and I have deceived her.” Kurama began.
“Sorry I'm not following.”
“My truest name is Yoko, I was a fox, a spirit fox, gaining the powers of a demon over the hundreds of years that I lived. In time I became bored and past my time learning the art of breaking codes and seals. Ancient treasures were my favorite sport. That is how I came to meet Kayura.” He looked over at her fondly.
“Her brother and I were close friends and he was a very trusted accomplice in the art of breaking and entering. It seemed the apple didn't fall far from the tree and he introduced me to his sister, Kayura. We were an unstoppable trio for a very long while. Kayura and I fell in love and married and we were happy for a while.” Kayura smiled fondly as she recalled her demon days.
“However it was short live as Kuronue gave his life to save mine when a robbery had gone south. Kayura and I kept up with the plans however, not wanting Kuronue's sacrifice to be in vain. It went well for a while, but fifteen years ago I made a careless mistake and was badly injured by a strong pursuer. With the last energy I had I escaped to the living world and became the child of a proud human family. Knowing that if I could withstand humanity for ten years, my spirit energy would have time to safely recover. Then I would escape without a trace.” Yusuke crossed his arms.
“I take it something went wrong.” Kurama nodded.
“My mother fell ill, I know it might sound foolish but, I couldn't leave her. Considering what she had done for me. That's when they appeared. Hiei had somehow tracked me down, needing my expertise and I remembered the powers of the forlorn hope.” Kurama confided, looking down at the small mirror in his hands. He turned to Yusuke.
“Did you know that in some species a child eats it's mother?” Yusuke looked disgusted.
“Let me use the forlorn hope to save the woman's life, and I will gladly accept my punishment.” That statement caught Kayura off balance. There was something off about this.
“But, why would a monster do that for a human?” Yusuke was clearly confused; he didn't understand Kurama's motives at all. Kurama walked over to look over the town at the setting sun.
“I don't know, maybe because I'm guilty. Maybe I feel like I am one of those mother-devouring creatures. I've caused her great pains, it's hard raising a child who thinks your inferior. I feel I broke her spirit, like maybe, in some way, I caused her disease.” Yusuke turned around to face the spirit fox.
“Why are you telling me all this?” He asked. Kayura sighed, he still didn't understand.
“Maybe I just needed someone to know. Besides, I could tell that you would trust me.” Kurama stated, looking over his shoulder at the spirit detective. The door to the roof opened and a nurse rushed in.
“Suuichi, it's your mother!” He turned and rushed over to the stairs, Kayura and Yusuke close behind. They met the doctor outside his mother's room.
“She's fallen into what we call the critical stage. To be perfectly honest, your mother is about to die.” Kurama's eyes narrowed.
“How long?” The doctor hung his head.
“Probably tonight. We'll do what we can. Suuichi…I'm sorry.” He nodded and turned to walk away, glancing briefly at his mother's door before heading back up to the roof.
“I have no choice.” Now the boy was catching on.
“You'll use it tonight, is that what you mean? I heard you had to dish out something to the forlorn hope to make it work so do you know what that something is?” Yusuke asked, Kayura was a bit curious herself.
“Yes, life.” Kurama stated simply. Kayura's eyes widened and she moved to smack him but found herself unable to budge. Her wrists and ankles were being held in the vice like grip of Kurama's plants. She tried to open her mouth to speak but a vine wrapped around her mouth.
“I am sorry Kayura, but I must do this. I love her.” Kurama placed the small mirror on the ground at his feet.
“Forlorn hope, I ask you to wake from your sleep and hear my plea. Reflect my greatest desire so that you can make it true.” And immense energy shot out of the mirror and a deep voice emitted from it.
“The happiness of this woman is that what you desire?” The mirror asked.
“It is.” He answered without hesitation.
“Hey! Can't you hold on a second so we can work things out? I mean there's gotta be some other way to do this!” Kurama shook his head solemnly.
“No there is not.” The booming voice emitted from the mirror once again.
“To grant this wish you must give your life, is that what you desire?” Kayura struggled against the plants, transforming into her demon form in hopes of blasting her way out. The vines only tightened their hold.
“If that will save my mother's life then yes, I do.” Silent tears began to fall from Kayura's eyes. She had lost her love once already; she wasn't ready to watch him leave her again, not after she just got him back.
“Then your desire shall be fulfilled.” The mirror granted a jolt of electricity shooting out and wrapping around Kurama's body. Yusuke looked between the mirror and Kurama before leaning down and placing his hand in front of the mirror as well.
“What are you doing?” Kurama asked in shocked confusion.
“Hey mirror guy can you hear me! I want you to take my life instead, that way Kurama can live and he can still get his wish right?” Kurama glared at the spirit detective.
“That doesn't make sense, it was my wish!” Yusuke glared right back.
“Yeah well it doesn't make sense rescuing your mom just so she can spend the rest of her life mourning the death of her son. I've seen that once before and I don't want to see it again.” A bright light shot up from the mirror and enveloped them both.
“Your desire shall be fulfilled!” The mirror spoke. In a moment the light was gone and the plants surrounding Kayura disappeared. She fell to her knees, vaguely making out Kurama and Yusuke's forms lying out on the ground. Kurama opened his eyes, pulling himself up from the ground.
“I'm still alive.” Kurama glanced over at Kayura who was struggling to her feet and he rushed over to her side, reaching out a hand to help her up. Her hand shot up and slapped it away. She shakily rose to her feet, rubbing her wrists.
“Don't you touch me.” Kayura spat out with barely restrained rage. The wings on her back spread and she took to the air.
“Kayura…I'm sorry…” Kurama's eyes widened and he raced down the steps.
“My mother!” He rushed down the stairs, meeting the doctors at the bottom.
“Suuichi it's a miracle!” The nurse exclaimed.
“Not only is she out of the critical stage it seems as if she will make a full recovery. Her will to survive is an amazing thing, that's for sure.” Kurama stepped around them and over to his mothers side, reaching out to hold her hand.
“You're going to be alright mother.” She smiled up at her son before closing her eyes and falling asleep. Now that he knew his mother was all right…Kurama raced out the door and took to the roofs, following Kayura's scent. He tracked her to a cliff side over looking the ocean. He knew she knew he was there and he waited patiently for her to say something.
“I can't believe you did that to me.” Kurama sighed.
“You would have stopped me if I hadn't.” Kayura turned to him sharply.
“Do you know that for sure?” Her tone was biting.
“I do.” Kurama stated confidently. Kayura's form collapsed into that of her human self and she sighed, falling to her knees.
“You were so ready to leave me again.” He wanted so much to run to her and wrap his arms around her, tell her everything was going to be all right. But he knew this was something that needed to happen so he stood his ground.
“That was not my intention and you know that.” Kayura's shoulders began to shake with scornful laughter.
“No, that's right, just a regrettable consequence. Another expendable asset.” Kurama's eyes narrowed at her.
“Don't say things like that Kayura! I wouldn't be here right now if it wasn't for you. I love you more than life itself.” She rose to her feet quickly, a violent fury burning in her indigo eyes.
“The life that you were so willing to give up not ten minuets ago. You obviously don't hold your life in high regard so what does that say for your love for me.” Kurama was at a loss for words, it made sense what she was saying but it was far from the truth, he just didn't know how to tell her that. Kayura's shoulders slumped and she shook her head dejectedly.
“You just don't understand…” she said, turning and freefalling off the edge of the cliff. She landed agile on the sand and she stood, kicking off her shoes and socks and walking out to where the ocean could lap at her feet. A few moments later Kurama joined her.
“Then tell me, tell me what I have to do to fix this.” There was a hint of despondency in his tone. Kayura smiled and turned away from him, her voice barely above a whisper.
“If you only knew how easy it would be to show me how you feel. `I love you' is not what I need to hear. It's what I need to feel. And right now, I just don't. I feel betrayed, which I know is wrong. She's your mother and I hate to think that I have to compete with her for your affections, and I won't. I'm not going to make you choose, that is extremely unfair to you. I'm not going to try and force you to make the decision of who is more important to you, your wife, or your mother. But I am going to walk away. If you know without a shadow of a doubt that you want to be with me you will come after me. But if you don't, let it burn.” Kayura finished, pausing a moment before placing one foot in front of the other. She didn't even make it one step before Kurama's voice stopped her.
“No.” Kayura turned to the fox, his eyes hidden by his hair.
“What?” Kurama raised his eyes to hers, a quiet fire burning in their depths.
“You're not going to walk away from this. I know your hurt Kayura, and it kills me to think that I am the one who has caused you this pain. But you've been running away from your problems all your life. You ran from your guilt, your pain...your love. And I am not going to let you treat me like one of your insignificant problems. If you have something to say to me then say it.” Kayura turned her head to the side, the tears that had been brimming in her eyes flying wildly about her.
“You killed me…” Her voice was a pained whisper.
“Kayura-” She folded her arms around herself and a small smile came to her lips.
“That first kiss, so long ago, woke me up from a lifetime of restless slumber. I lived my most glorious days by your side, the only time I felt truly alive was when I was with you. And then you left me, I kept waiting, hoping that you would come back…you never did. A part of me died that night. I was broken. For the longest time the only thing I had known was you and then all of the sudden it seemed, you weren't there. I felt so alone…and exactly like you said, I ran from it.” Kurama nodded in understanding.
“To Sakura.” Kayura smiled brighter, turning to look out at the ocean.
“She healed me, taught me how to love again. And then tonight, when I saw you and what you were about to do, I wanted so badly just to hate you, wanted to resent you for all the pain you put me through. But I realized when I found you, that pain had only made me stronger.” She turned to Kurama, a quiet resolve in her eyes.
“I was fully prepared to walk away from you tonight, never to look back. But I find my feet frozen in the sand. I realize now that I cannot control fate, everyone is meant to die. It is inevitable. I would rather spend what time we have…together.” Kurama reached out and before Kayura could even let out a gasp of surprise he had pulled her to him, crushing his lips against hers in a searing kiss. It took a moment for her to regain her senses when he released her lips from the burning embrace and she looked up at him with cloudy half lidded eyes.
“Took you long enough…” The clouds in her brain dissipated and she smiled brightly before reaching her hand behind his head and bringing his lips down upon hers once again. Sakura couldn't help but sigh in the back of her mind. This was how it was meant to be.
They stayed the night on the sand, falling asleep watching the stars. The sound of clucking birds woke them and it took them a moment to register that they were still on the beach. Kayura had regressed into Sakura's mind and was still fast asleep, leaving Sakura to deal with the sleeping fox. She jumped up, pulling on her school jacket as the harsh ocean wind ripped over her exposed arms. Thankfully there was no sand on her uniform. School started in a little over half an hour and they were all the way across town! She nudged the sleeping boy by her side. He just turned over. Sakura giggled as one of Kayura's memories drifted into her mind. She leaned her head down and lightly blew on the back of his left ear. The affect was almost instantaneous. Kurama immediately shot up from his sleep and tackled Sakura to the ground, rolling her so that she was lying under him with his hands holding her wrists above her head. Startled prussian eyes stared back into equally startled emerald.
“How did you know about that?” Sakura stared up at him incredulously.
“Kayura and I are not completely different you know. Like you said, it was not a possession, it was a merger. We just learned to separate one personality from the other over time, as well as the body.” Kurama still did not move and Sakura's body was beginning to react to his closeness.
“How does that work exactly?” Sakura swallowed hard, her voice coming out just above a whisper.
“It's difficult to say. The power in my body is far to great for it to handle by itself so when I become emotionally stressed her form compensates for the extra power so my human form does not get ripped apart. Simple molecular biology. When my cells get overly excited, hers form to counterbalance the stored energy.” Kurama smiled slightly.
“Simple.” The smug grin on his face was not helping her situation and she only hoped that he would not be able to smell her arousal. She would just have to distract him then.
“It's not the same for everyone though. Your body may be more than capable of handling the energy you have now. There were extenuating circumstances that forced my energy to reach it's peak at a very early point in my life so I've had ample time to work through the complications of my transformations and the complexity of separating myself from Kayura.” He still hadn't moved if not for inching even closer. It was beginning to tax Sakura's resolve. She could tell that her heartbeat had begun to slowly quicken and her breaths were coming out short and heavy. She didn't know how much more of this she could take.
“That's interesting. I will have to study more into that.” She knew from the tone in his voice and the amused look in his eyes that he had noticed her situation as well. Sakura swallowed and steeled her resolve.
“Well your welcome to do that but right now we have to go to school. And I'm finding that a bit difficult with you lying on top of me. So if you would just…” He smirked, that was not good.
“Are you sure that's what you want.” He asked, lowering his face to nuzzle in the crook of her neck. She could most definitely feel his own arousal brushing against her exposed thigh.
“Yes.” Her voice was barely a squeak, not convincing in the least even to her own ears. Kurama chuckled, sending odd vibrations over her neck and cascading down her spine.
“You don't sound so sure. Your mouth says yes, but your body says no.” He breathed out, dragging his teeth down the side of her neck causing Sakura to let out a startled gasp. In an instant his presence was gone and she sat up to find him standing in front of her, brushing the sand off of his school jacket.
“What are you?” Sakura managed, her head swimming with confusion. Kurama merely glanced down at her.
“We have to go to school Sakura, it's starts in twenty minuets and we're all the way across town. We'll have to hurry if we want to make it in time.” Sakura's mouth hung open like a fish out of water. She growled low in her throat and narrowed her eyes at the spirit fox.
`Tease.' She thought. Well, two could play at that game. She chuckled evilly to herself and rose to her feet following Kurama over the rooftops to their school. Sakura avoided Kurama the entire day, not wanting to have to look him in the eye. The end of the day brought some interesting turn of events. It seemed that Hiei had kidnapped the spirit detective's girlfriend in an attempt to draw him out. Kayura knew Kurama would go after him, he felt indebted to Yusuke for helping save his mothers life. Well this should get interesting. Kayura waited in the shadows for him to take off after them and followed him close behind. He stopped at an old warehouse district in front of the building marked No. 1. He clenched his fists.
“That scent is unmistakable. Hiei must be desperate to take that form.” He stated before taking off into the building. Kayura followed hesitantly, masking her energy signal and hiding in the shadows. What she saw almost made her scream. After all that talking she had done last night about not wanting to lose him again he goes and throws himself of Hiei's sword! Well she wasn't going to care this time. She turned to leave but stopped herself as she noticed Kurama slice his hand on the blade, tossing the blood from the cut into Hiei's Jagan eye.
“Hey I've come untied!” Yusuke exclaimed. Kurama clutched at the wound in his stomach.
“The eyes on Hiei's body are merely for amplification. Without the Jagan exposed on his forehead, his powers become useless.” Kurama grunted and doubled over, sweat beading on his forehead from the effort of staying on his feet.
“I'm fine, only a minor hole in my stomach.” Yusuke stood, a confounded expression on his face.
“You didn't have to do that…” Kurama smirked and tossed a glance at Yusuke over his shoulder as he limped away.
“I'm alive only because of you. Please allow me to pay my debt. You must handle Hiei, I will use my powers to keep the girl from transforming.” Kayura looked down at the blue haired girl who was trying desperately to keep the eye on the girl's forehead from opening. It was taxing her energy. She turned back to the conversation between Kurama and Yusuke.
“Kurama…” Yusuke said, not really knowing what to say to that. Kurama merely nodded and walked over to the two girls. Kayura turned her attentions to the recovering demon.
“Kurama… how could you! You traitor!” Yusuke stepped over in front of the demon.
“Take your problems up with me!” Yusuke's energy flared around him. Hiei must have noticed this as she saw the momentary surprise in his eyes. He shot up from his sitting position and threw a fast punch at Yusuke's face, landing a solid hit. Yusuke turned right around and threw a punch back at Hiei who easily dodged. It went on like that, Hiei hitting and dogging and Yusuke not getting a solid hit in for the life of him. Hiei took it in stride.
“See, it doesn't matter how strong you are if you can't hit me!” Hiei exclaimed landing a punch to Yusuke's jaw. The boy flew back into the wall, sliding down to the ground with a thud. Kayura smirked as she noticed Yusuke's eyes wander over to the fallen forlorn hope. If he weren't stupid he would take the opportunity. She saw him get up and seemingly begin to run away, which is exactly what Hiei thought.
“How sad! After all this, you actually think you can run away from me.” Hiei barged in for an attack, unknowingly positioning himself right where Yusuke wanted him. The boy skidded to a halt and turned firing his spirit gun blast at the Mirror, narrowly missing the oncoming demon. Hiei chuckled at his apparent victory.
“My, what a well kept secret. Too bad all of your energy was wasted on poor aim.” Kayura smirked as noticed the blast land on the mirror, shattering it and sending it right back at Hiei. He noticed it too late however and it hit him dead in the back and knocking him off of his feet.
“Wha-What happened!?” Yusuke smirked.
“Simple, I won.” Hiei landed on his hands and knees. Looking back at the forlorn hope.
“But you missed…the forlorn hope? You reflected the shot. Must have guessed exactly the way that I would dodge.” Kayura smiled and stifled a giggle. Didn't see that one coming did you Jaganshi?
“I think that's what they call watching your opponent.” Hiei sighed in defeat.
“Your, pretty clever.” He managed out before collapsing to the ground. Yusuke made his way over to the sword, taking the hilt from the blade and picking the human girl up from the ground. He dropped a few drops of the antidote into her open mouth and waited as the eye closed on her forehead, letting out a sigh of relief.
“Goodbye Keiko monster.” The assistant smiled warmly.
“She's going to recover.” Yusuke nodded and smiled as well.
“I hope so.” He paused and looked over at Kurama who was leaning against a crate.
“Thanks for all the help Kurama. How do you feel?” Kurama shrugged.
“Good, I guess. I avoided the organs at least.” The blue haired girl clapped her hands together.
“I still can't believe what you did Yusuke.” Yusuke turned back to her.
“What?” The girl looked pleasantly surprised.
“Why didn't you tell me the spirit gun could bounce off mirrors, when did you learn that?” She asked. Yusuke smiled.
“Hmm, about ten minuets ago.” The girl's happiness quickly turned to anger.
“What?!” She exclaimed.
“Hiei was way to fast, I knew he'd be able to dodge the spirit gun unless I could shoot him from behind. That's when I spotted the forlorn hope in the corner and I thought hey I'll give it a try.” Kurama looked shocked as well.
“You weren't certain?” He asked. Kayura giggled softly and jumped down from her perch, still staying out of sight.
“Well one time in science class they bounced light off a mirror and I though it might be the same.” The girl started and glared at Yusuke.
“Might! You risked our lives on a might? What if the spirit gun hadn't bounced off the mirror?” Yusuke merely shrugged.
“Get chopped into pieces I guess.” Kurama chuckled softly.
“All the while we've been thinking you were a brilliant strategist, really, you're just a lucky fool.” Kayura smiled and walked out from behind the box she was hiding behind, unnoticed to the spirit detective and his assistant.
“Hey watch it fox boy! What's that word mean anyway!?” Kayura smiled at the boy's antics.
“A strategist is someone who uses his brain.” Yusuke raised his fist to the red head.
“Hey!” The girl placed a hand on Yusuke's arm.
“Now, now boys.” Kayura giggled, catching the attention of the three conscious occupants.
“Regardless of whether he knew it would work or not, it was still a good move. You, assistant, shouldn't you be doing something with Hiei?” The girl's eyes widened.
“That's right! I'll need to take him back to spirit world, hopefully before he wakes up.” The girls cringed and called her ore, floating over and placing Hiei on the back before saluting and flying off to spirit world.
“See, I like her. You picked a good one Kurama.” Yusuke nodded approvingly in Kayura's direction. Kurama smiled.
“I like to think so.” Kayura just shook her head and walked over to where Kurama was sitting; putting one arm over her shoulder, she hoisted him up.
“Come on lover boy, lets go get you bandaged up. You're bleeding all over the place. Till we meet again, detective.” Kayura nodded before taking off.
