Chapter 1:
Rocky Road Reality
Life was always so normal… everyday was the same thing… A school bus numbered 573 slowly came to a stop letting an adolescent girl step out. The snow covered street ahead was lined with town houses… the neighborhood was actually really nice. As the bus drove off the girl continued walking down the sidewalk that was now hidden under the snow. Countless snowflakes fell from the gray colored sky to the cold earth. She gazed into the horizon watching the frozen ice crystals… It's been said that no two snowflakes are alike… but as the girl stood there letting the snow fall to her and seeing the thousands of white flakes kiss the frozen ground she had to doubt that… it seemed impossible that every snowflake was different… unique… it just seemed… impossible…
As she walked towards one of the houses she brushed her long copper hair to the side but something caught her eye. She gazed at the white snowflake resting on the thin copper threads with her cold gray eyes. It was beautiful… the first real snowflake she had ever seen but as she gazed at the tiny crystalline flake… she was reminded that even the most beautiful things must end… and it melted away into nothing… She looked back into the sky… “Maybe someday I'll have someone to walk in the snow with… someday…” With that she opened the door to the house and walked inside… Life was always so normal… filled with desperate prayers that would never be heard… and full of worthless disappointment.
A teenage looking boy with a dark aura as mysterious as his piercing red eyes and tall black hair that had been streaked with a white starburst stood in the middle of a long, palace like hallway. “Hiei…” Another boy… this one with crimson red hair and emerald eyes looked to the much shorter adolescent. “You've been more isolated then usual… and to be honest that's pretty hard for you to do…” The red eyed boy who was clearly Hiei glared at him, “Kurama… if I wanted anyone to bother me I'd come to you… but I don't…” With that he turned and walked down the long passage way but Kurama wasn't the type to let him be, “This is about Nanashi isn't it…” Hiei froze in place and then shot a look at Kurama, “It doesn't matter now does it…” His voice was full of vain and a hidden sense of sorrow. He continued walking… and entered a room, shutting the door behind him. Kurama stared at the shut door, for once he was at a loss… there was nothing he could do… and in his heart… there was nothing he wanted to do…
The girl sat on the couch staring up at the ceiling, for the past three days she had been so depressed and had no clue why… nothing had gone wrong… well nothing unusually wrong anyway… but everything seemed so much darker then normal… she felt torn… The door flew open, revealing a tall dark haired woman, “Kuro will you please get off your lazy ass and shovel the sidewalk.” Kuro stood up and walked towards the door grabbing the snow shovel on the way out. She wanted to give her mom a glare but kept it inside and shut the door behind her. She started from the door and worked her way toward the end.
By the time she finished it was dark. She got inside shaking from the cold. Her mom had always been so hard on her… when she wasn't yelling, she'd give her something to do… that was all she was good for… It was only 7:00 and the only thing she wanted to do was write… it was a way of venting all her frustration and depression without causing a scene. Her mom walked over to the computer. “Have you shoveled the sidewalk…” Kuro stopped typing to look up at her mother, “Yeah…” She looked back at the screen tapping the keys repeatedly as she wrote. Her mom gave her a look of annoyance and left. Kuro sighed in relief before hearing the front door open. She looked in the direction of the sound. Her mom flung the door open, “Kuro, this is not shoveling a side walk…”
Kuro stood up from the computer and walked over to the front door wearing her pajama's which were a baggy green T-shirt and black pants. She stared outside. She saw the snow falling onto the half-blanketed sidewalk, “If I shovel it again it'll just get covered u…” Her mother forcefully grabbed the shovel and through it out the door. “Honestly… You'll blame anything for you're laziness can't you ever think of anyone but yourself!” She shoved the girl outside and slammed the door. Kuro stared at the door for a while before collapsing into the snow. She covered her face holding her breath to prevent from crying… don't cry Kuro… it wont help… it'll only prove your weakness… She shook her head unable to hold in her tears any longer and she began to cry. “Nothings ever good enough for you! I can't help it if it snows! I can only do so much! It's not my fault… I'm not the selfish one! YOU ARE! IF YOU CAN JUST STAND THERE AND PUSH ME AROUND LIKE THAT AND CALL ME SELFISH, SHOULDN'T THAT BE PROOF ENOUGH THAT YOU'RE THE SELFISH ONE!!!”
Her tear-streaked face was now red from the cold and her furry. She breathed heavily staring at the white ground clenching the snow in her hands. “Look at me… she's right… I am selfish… I'm constantly depressed about my problems… I always put myself above anyone else…” Kuro stood up whipping the tears from her now piercing ice blue eyes. Whenever she held back tears her eyes would completely change from their gray color to a frozen cold shade of blue ice. She picked up the shovel and yet again and begun at the door and towards the end. 2 hours had gone by, before she finally got inside and changed before completely falling asleep exhausted from working so hard in the freezing cold. It was clear that her life was becoming more and more disastrous… little did she know what to expect in the morning…
Morning had come faster then she had expected. Her eyes fluttered open, but she quickly shifted her self to the side pulling the soft light pink and black covers over her. She carelessly absorbed the comfort of the bed until one word came to mind… school… She shot up, “OH GREAT!!! WHY DIDN'T MY ALARM GO OF!!! WHY DIDN'T IT…” She paused in mid-sentence… Her vision focused on the bed… it was huge! The bed must have been a queen size at least and the covers… as beautiful as they were… she'd never seen them in her life. As she looked up she realized the whole room was decorated in light pink and thousands of black ribbon. Her heart pounded in her chest franticly. “What the Hell…” She'd never seen this room in her life and somehow she just woke up in a bed she'd never fell asleep in. In a breathless voice she began to panic. “What the hell is going on… what the hell is…” Her voice was much different. Instead of the slightly raspy low voice she had was a slightly deeper… more womanly voice but in her shock she barely noticed. She caught sight of someone else in the room, and with a swift motion of fear and shock she quickly faced the newcomer.
It was a girl… but… yet again it seemed like there was something wrong… the girl she was looking at… was in a mirror… her reflection. She stared back at it. The girl in the mirror had long gold hair streaked with multiple white strands and her eyes were a shade of warm amber. The reflection wore a black nightgown that reached to the floor decorated with, light pink trim and ribbons. The straps that made there way over her shoulders and crossed at the back held the gown loosely around her. All Kuro could do was gaze into the reflection with her mouth wide open in shock. She let out a breathy stutter before giving a blood-curdling scream.
“WHAT THE FUCK IS GOING ON!!!??? WHAT'S HAPPENING TO ME!!!???” Two boys came rushing into the room. One of the boys wore a green jump suit and a slicked back dark hair. The other one wore a blue jump suit and had a rather disturbing face. He was extremely tall and had orange Elvis styled hair. Kuro turned around franticly and took a sharp breath in shock, “Who are you and what the hell is going on!?” The dark haired boy chuckled at her, “Don't worry Nanashi we brought you your pads…” The tall one started to laugh, “Yeah ma'am were here to fix your leaking problem…” They both exploded into laughter holding their sides. “GOOD ONE KUWABARA!!!” The orange haired boy named Kuwabara began to laugh even harder. “Thanks Urameshi!”
Kuro's eyebrow twitched, “HOW DARE YOU SPEAK TO A G…” Her sentence was cut off by A new voice, “Yusuke! Kuwabara! That's no way to speak to any girl, let alone Nanashi!” The owner to the voice came into view. It was Kurama. Kuro had never seen any of these people before… Kurama stood outside her door, May I come in Nanashi?” Kuro gave him a confused look, “Why does everyone keep calling me that?” Kurama paused, “Nanashi are you alright.” She gave in, “I'm fine… just… where am I?” Kurama, Yusuke, and Kuwabara stared at her with blank faces, the first to speak was Yusuke, “Your in Spirit World Palace… remember…” Kuro raised an eyebrow, “uh…” Alright Kuro… why didn't you figure this out earlier… this is just some bizarre dream… that's all… She sighed in figuring it out and decided to go along with it. “Spirit World palace… oh… all right…” Kuwabara laughed nervously, “Gezz Nanashi… you actually had me going there for a second.” Yusuke gave him a blank expression, “Kuwabara… every girl has you going for a second… till they kick your ass…”
Kuwabara glared at him, “SHUT UP URAMESHI!!!” Yusuke laughed, “So fox boy… where'd Hiei run off to?” Kurama shot up, “Yusuke!” Yusuke shrugged, “just asking…” Kurama glared at him, “Well don't… it's none of your concern…” Yusuke glared back, “Well I guess not… since it only took you guys 2 months to let me and Kuwabara figure it out on our own…” Kurama defended himself, “I've gotten enough of this from Hiei, I don't need this from you…” Yusuke rolled his eyes as he left, “Whatever Kurama…” Kuwabara chased after him, leaving Kuro alone with Kurama. Kurama sighed, “Nanashi… don't blame this on yourself… I promise things will work out one way or another.” Kurama entered the room and sat on the bed, “Nanashi I…”
Before he could continue a tall teenage boy with brown hair and brown eyes with a “Jr” printed on his forehead walked into the doorway. “Nanashi?” Kuro looked up to face him. He was actually very cute. She responded, “Uh… yes…” He came into the room, “I heard you screaming this morning… may… I speak to you… alone…” He eyed Kurama. Kurama took the hint and left. The brown hair boy paused for a moment ensuring that he and the others were gone. “Kuro?” She shot her full attention to him at the sound of her “real” name, “How do you…” The teen pressed his hands to his mouth, “Oh god…” She eyed him, “Can you please explain what's going on… I mean… this must all be a dream… but…then again dreams don't last this long…” The boy sighed, “Kuro… my name is Koenma… I'm the son of King Yama… the ruler of Spirit World. And… well you've broken one of our most important secrets… You see… The body you are in is not… well…” He paused again, “What I am about to tell you is absolutely confidential… no one must know about it… you have to swear not to tell anyone!”
Kuro looked up at him with curiosity, “I just want to know what's happening… if I have to swear to not tell anyone then fine… but will you please explain where I am… and who I am… and who are those guys?” Koenma laughed slightly, “I'd be happy to, but first let me explain what happened. You see… every being has not only one life… but actually two… when one shuts down… or as we say, falls asleep… our soul takes possession of our other life… another body… leaving all the memories of one life in their proper mind. So you see… as the human Kuro… you live on earth, sleeping at night… and in your sleep you live the life of Nanashi in the spirit world. So when you fall asleep in one body, you wake up in another remembering only the things that are seen and learned from the body in which you are in. Do you understand?” Kuro… or rather Nanashi nodded, “Sort of…” Koenma smiled, “It will all make sense soon enough, but let me continue. You see… right now Kuro is shut down… sleeping… and the spirit or soul is currently in possession of Nanashi but the memories of them were reversed… meaning that you remember everything from Kuro's body… but nothing from Nanashi's… you may not be able to access your true body for a long time. Until we find out how to fix this… instead Nanashi's mind will be in control of your body on Earth until we can reverse the process. I know this probably doesn't make any sense to you but hopefully you get most of what I'm saying. The basic principal is you have two lives… when you fall asleep you wake up in the other body. Right now you are in your other body but you only remember the things that Kuro knows. So your Kuro in a different body but you must promise not to reveal this to anyone. No one except for a few higher ranked spiritual beings and yourself know this… Not even my spirit detectives know this…”
Nanashi nodded, “All right… I won't tell… but if what you're saying is true… then what happens when one of the bodies shuts down permanently…” Koenma looked shocked at her question, “You mean dies… well… I'm sorry to tell you this, but I'm not allowed to give out that information… you shouldn't even know about this.” She sighed, “Fine… but if I'm not allowed to tell anyone I'm Kuro… then how am I gonna explain to them that I don't remember anything…” Koenma grinned, “I'll tell you everything you need to know about Nanashi… the rest you can say you don't remember because you got amnesia.” She laughed slightly at his joke. “All right… but once you switch back my memories won't I remember everything that happened while I was here?” Koenma gave her a solemn look, “No… once I find a way to switch the memories back I'll also erase everything you've seen here as well as erase everything Nanashi has seen while staying in your body.
Kuro nodded, “So I won't remember any of this…” Koenma shook his head, “I'm afraid not…” Kuro seemed amazed, “wow…” Koenma laughed a bit before continuing, “From now on your known as Nanashi here… Nanashi is… how do I say it… she's an Evangelize Angel. An Evangelize angel… or what many humans call them… Guardian Angel, well… at one point had a life. However in the living they lead a sinful life but before death they performed a great act of selflessness.” Nanashi blinked, “So in other words… they ended their life for the good of someone else… like for example saving someone's life for the price of their own?” Koenma nodded, “Precisely… but anyway, Nanashi's case was a little different… her past had been very cruel to her. Humans killed her parents as well as many of the members of her race. She was a demon… although what kind of demon is a mystery to us… the only one who knows is Nanashi herself… but you see… as revenge for the murder of her entire race, she committed several mass murders against humans but ended her life to save one. As of the reason why is also unknown. When she died she arrived at the Gate of Decision leaving me to decide her fate in the afterlife. I looked at her case and found it to be very interesting… so I realized eternal suffering was much too harsh and gave her a position as an Angelic Guardian. The thing was Nanashi was the sort of person who would rather spend her afterlife in hell instead of watch over someone for the persons lifetime and then spend it in paradise.”
Nanashi looked up at him, “Wow… this is… a little over whelming… but ok…” Koenma continued, “So she refused the offer, so I made a deal with her… I told her she had to at least pretend to be watching over the person…”
“Who is it…”
Koenma shook his head, “That's also something I'm not allowed to give out… your not the real Nanashi…” She sighed, “This is so confusing… but what the hell, I suppose getting away from my normal life will be worth the effort.” Koenma smiled, “Glad to here it… oh… I suppose you're wondering who the guys you met earlier are. Yusuke is my current spirit detective, Kuwabara is his friend who accompanies him through out his missions.” Kuro nodded, “Ok… now who's the red haired boy with the green eyes.” Koenma laughed a bit, “Oh Kurama… well… he first meet Yusuke on one of his missions… he was… lets just say not apart of the team then… but now he also is on Urameshi's team as well… and… uh… well… he's your boyfriend…”
Kuro shot up from where she was sitting, “NO WAY!” She shook it off, and laughed nervously, “That came out wrong… I mean he's cute and really sweet but… well… I don't really know him… I mean… how close are we… he's not gonna try and… uh…” Koenma laughed, “No nothing like that… you've just been dating for the past week or so… that and Kurama doesn't seem like the kind of person to… well.” She gave a sigh of relief. “Just as long as you don't expect me to… do that… then we're fine.” They both laughed. “So is there anyone else I should know about?” Koenma nodded, “Genki is an elderly woman who's agreed to watch over the crew here. She may look old but believe me she's a serious fighter… as well as Yusuke's master. Just respect her and you won't have any problems.” Kuro nodded, “Uh… Yusuke mentioned someone named Hiei…” An odd silence fell upon them before Koenma answered, “Hiei… is another member of the team… he was most defiantly a villain in the past, but his actions were in a sense… justified.” He turned to her, “His past was very painful, even more so then Nanashi's but if he wants you to know about it, then he'll tell you. He's not what you would call… social… and he has a bit of cold heart. I advise you to not bother him too much,” He laughed slightly, “And that's about it.” He stood up, “Now that you know all this you're free to do whatever you want except tell anyone our little secret.” He walked over to the door and then turned around to face her, “Oh… another thing, Nanashi's personality is just like yours so you don't need to worry about anything.” And with that he left.
