[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

Sorry for the loooong wait and short chapter, I was hospitalized a few days before thanksgiving, and incapacitated the rest of the month after a two day hospital stay, I had acute pancreatitis, which could have killed me, or so wikipedia says.

DHFT Chapter 2: Mystery

A scream resounded in an alleyway, but it was quickly cut short. The knife had effectively silenced the woman, when it penetrated her back, collapsing her lung. Her scream wasn't the only one, however...

“AAAAAH!” screeched Botan, clutching Yuusuke.

“Would you PLEASE calm down? It's only a MOVIE, Botan!” yelled Yuusuke.

“Shut up, you two!” yelled Kuwabara. Yuusuke snorted and turned back to the TV, only to see it fizzle out.

“What the hell?” growled Kuwabara, ready to throw his popcorn.

Shizuru popped out from behind the set, looking remarkably like a saber toothed tiger. “You're supposed to be studying, you lazy bums, not dicking around! Yuusuke, if you're not going to help him, get out.”

“Whoops, I'm so sorry, I had no idea, Shizuru-san!” cried Botan, turning wrathful eyes upon the two delinquents. “Yuusuke, let's go!”

Yuusuke groaned. “Fine, I'm goin', I'm goin'... harpy... OW! Your nails HURT!” he yelped as Botan dragged him out into the street.

A faint scream sounded in the distance. They instantly stopped arguing. Yuusuke strained his ears, and Botan's eyes widened.

“Shit... I have a feeling this one's a demon,” growled Yuusuke. Botan conjured her oar in a fluid motion, and grabbed the protesting Yuusuke by the collar of his shirt. She flew at breakneck pace toward the direction of the potential menace.

“Do you know how UNNATURAL it looks when you do that, Botan!?” griped Yuusuke as she unceremoniously deposited him on the ground.

“Never mind that, Yuusuke! We need to investigate this matter!” cried the agitated ferry girl.

“Oh, that's right...” he muttered, looking around for the demon they were trailing.

Further investigation revealed that the demon had left; leaving only a bit of destruction as evidence it had been there. Unnatural claw marks in the concrete bore testimony to this, as did one hysterical woman, who described the intruder as a “small red devil with unholy glowing eyes.”

Botan soothed the woman, while Yuusuke searched the premises, and had to admit defeat when he could not find hide nor hair of the “small red devil.”

“...and so we've got nothing to go on, except that it was a `short red devil with glowing eyes,'” grumbled Yuusuke to Kuwabara the next day during lunch.

“Let's just hope it STAYS gone,” said Kuwabara.

“What is it that you guys keep yammering about?” butted in Kirishima, who was in Kuwabara's gang.

“You guys have been whispering like that ever since the other day,” said Okubo, another of Kuwabara's posse.

Botan glanced over to the two boys and sighed. “It's just that we've been hearing stories about a ghost that was in Kuwabara's neighborhood.”

“My uncle said he saw a shrimpy chick in red that was high-tailing it out of there the other night that didn't look quite human,” volunteered Sawamura, the final member of Kuwabara's gang.

“Really!?” cried Botan, leaning in toward him. “Tell me!”

“I really don't know anything else besides that her eyes glowed kinda purple-y, and she wasn't any more than five feet tall,” said Sawamura.

“Short red chick, with glowing purple-y eyes, gotcha,” said Botan, furiously scribbling it down on a notepad.

“Hey, why are you guys so interested in the ghost?” asked Kirishima.

“Yuusuke has to check it out as part of his part time job at the detective agency,” said Botan brightly.

“Is that so?” said a voice behind them, making the crowd jump.

It was the new girl in school, whom most students had never heard speak. Botan peered close at her, as she had never seen her before, and had an aura she couldn't quite decipher.

“Yeah,” said Yuusuke, “I have a part time job after school with a detective agency.”

“Hmm, I thought you needed special permission to hold a job at this school,” said Yari, her eyes locking with Yuusuke's in a way that made him feel like she was boring into his mind. He snapped out of it, and shot back, “Well, I've got it from `ol Take, and it's none of your fucking business, girl.”

Yari scoffed, rolling her eyes. “If this is what I get for trying to hold a normal conversation with you, I'm not going to bother. Why don't you learn some manners from that agency of yours while you're at it?” she stalked away.

Okubo shuddered. “Did you see her eyes? they were scary! She's really creepy... she almost never speaks, and she creeps around like some redheaded bloodsucking ghoul.”

“She reminds me of that guy,” said Kuwabara, thinking of a nasty little demon by the name of Hiei that he detested.

“Who, Hiei?” asked Yuusuke. “Her glare was almost as bad as his.”

“Oh come on, you were rude to her, Yuusuke. It was only natural that she should snap back at you,” defended Botan. “I'm sure she's a perfectly nice person.”

“She never smiles,” said Kirishima. “I'd say she is either mean or a loner.”

Yuusuke grunted.

“YUUUUUUSUUUUKEEEEEE!” called Keiko's voice.

“Well, that's my cue guys, I'd better go or she'll nag my ear off even worse. See you,” grumbled Yuusuke.

“Why should I care if the human world is infested with demons?” hissed Hiei, not bothering to look at the boy who cornered him. “It's already infested with humans.”

“Now, now, Hiei, don't forget we're on parole, and you're the ONLY one who can really track her. She's been slipping under the radar too much to be a small threat... a normal low-level demon couldn't pull such a stunt,” said Kurama. “If you get arrested for not helping, I'm not going to vouch for you this time,” said Kurama with uncharacteristic malice toward a comrade dripping from every word of this last statement.

“If nothing else will please you, I'll take a look. Nothing else,” snarled Hiei.

“Thank you.”

Hiei and Kurama made their way through the city, the former leaping from rooftop to roof top as a black blur. Hiei quickly located the demonic aura, and pointed it out to Kurama. They quickly closed in to apprehend the suspect, having deemed it a low-level demon barely worth their effort. Imagine the shock they got when the suspect was discovered to be what appeared to be a perfectly normal human.

A perfectly normal human junior high school student with red hair and violet eyes. A girl named Yari Fujitaka.

To be continued. Yari's a demon? Shock shock... but things aren't always quite as they appear.
