Kittenn: Konnichiwa!

Elmo: Here is our new fic! Detective: Hatanaka, Shuiichi!

Kittenn: Here it is. We don't own Yu Yu Hakusho.

Detective: Hatanaka, Shuiichi

Yusuke has been fired by Koenma. Now the demigod doesn't have a detective. To figure out who to recruit, Koenma writes the names of all the humans with spirit energy on slips of paper and draws out of a hat. The winner: Shuiichi Hatanaka.

Koenma pulled a top hat out of his desk and Botan shook her head in amusement.

Whenever he needed a detective it would turn out like this. He'd draw a name from a hat.

Even Yuusuke was chosen like this. They had to make it look like a coincidence that it was him, and they used the excuse of `unexpected death'. They could only use that every hundred years or so, because the new detectives would often get training from the old ones.

The names in the hat weren't chosen at random though. For a month, George would look up all humans with high spiritual awareness, and the lucky top fifty were the ones that got in the draw. These humans are the ones that could someday defiantly become powerful.

Koenma pulled out the name and smiled.

“Ahh Ha! Hatanaka, Shuiichi!”

For ever new detective, they had to think up an excuse. Yuusuke died, Sensui ran into demons loose in the human world.

Botan was always the one that had to think up the excuse. After Koenma approved of the plan, she would always get right on it.

She was proud to say that her all of her ingenious plans so-far have worked, and never once has one been turned down by Koenma.

She pulled out her book and flipped through the laws of the spirit real. It took her the usual fifteen minutes to find something, a loophole in the laws, reasons to take a human to the spirit realm. She considered getting the kid to wander into the makai, but she opted against it.

Shuiichi Hatanaka was the traditional fourteen years of age that was required to become Koenma's detective, and he wouldn't be able to handle makai at the moment.

She nodded to herself before looking back up to Koenma.

“We could have him see me floating on my oar and then take him in because he can see me. According to the laws, if a human sees a guide while she's not in a human body then they'd have to have their memories of that girl removed or their awareness put to good use…”

Koenma nodded and then looked to the world map that was against the back wall. He spoke to it, “pinpoint Hatanaka, Shuiichi.”

In every place in the world there was a Shuiichi Minamino, a dot appeared. He passed Botan a picture and she took a miniature copy of the map. She quickly ran out of the office and flew into the human realm.

“Shuiichi-kun,” a girl waved to a teenage boy with black hair and hazel eyes, “I'll see you tomorrow!”

He waved back and then sighed. He spotted his older brother waiting for him in their usual meeting spot, outside their favourite coffee shop.

“Mino-kun, I can't understand how you survived Meiou Academy. I barely can!”

His brother chuckled at his misfortune and then they walked into the building.

“Hata-kun, you just have to be polite. Turn them down politely, run from them as we go home, (I have this great route through the mall that looses them all), and if they ever ambush you or anything… figure something out.”

Shuiichi laughed at his brother as they drank their tea, “Is the genius Shuuichi Minamino lowering himself to suggest I fight girls?” Kurama rolled his eyes.

“That would've worked pretty well too, but I would never break our dearest Kuwabara's honour code,” the two began to laugh together as they pictured Kuwabara and his code.

Shuiichi only knew of it because he was walking home with his brother and Kuwabara one day and they were ambushed by angry fan girls. Kurama's only solution out would be to fight them off, but the way Kuwabara yelled at that suggestion was too funny not to remember.

Kurama sobered faster than Shuiichi, and then Shuiichi felt shivers down his spine and sobered too. He wondered what it was this time.

You see, ever since he was younger he had an incredible sixth sense. After a couple years he could feel the spirits emotions, morals, and even could tell the difference between low-class animal and human spirits. There was one kind of spirit he couldn't really tell anything of, other than that they were near. He assumed it was some kind of grim-reaper of something along those lines.

Shuiichi took at sip of his tea and they went into a normal conversation about school and work, (in Kurama's case).

After they finished their tea they began the short walk home, and Shuiichi couldn't shake that feeling that something was there.

His brother sometimes gave him another kind of strange shivers in his spine. It was different from the strange one he assumed was “Grim Reaper”, but not that much dissimilar.

He thought his brother was haunted or possessed by an evil spirit.

What sometimes confused him though, was that most of the time when he felt the dubbed “Reaper Tingles”, they were more like the happy, soft-hearted spirits than what he would have thought.

He looked out his window and saw a very strange sight.

There, floating outside the house on oar was a girl with a pink kimono and blue hair.

She looked over to him, and saw him staring right at her. She still had a dreamy look in her eye and he shook his head.

“Hey you,” he called over to her. She looked over to him and seemed to realize that he could see her.

“Eep!”

She flew into his room and covered his mouth. She led him towards his window and then climbed into the tree, the oar she was flying on seemingly gone.

“If I remove my hand, promise not to talk?”

He nodded nervously and then she removed her hand, she shuffled over on the branch and looked back at him, “Common,” she whispered. He followed.

The two climbed deep into the tree and then they went to the bottom branches. She jumped out and grabbed his hand. She led him to a deserted warehouse.

In that warehouse was her body. At first he thought maybe it was her twin or something, and then he realized the familiar feeling that she was a spirit, and realized it was her body. She walked into her body and then sat up.

“Shuiichi-san, how could you see me?”

Botan really was a great actress.

She knew that there was a glitch in ferry girls that made it so they could `accidentally' make themselves seen by a certain person, as long as that person had spiritual energy.

The so-called glitch was activated by feelings towards somebody living. Botan had complete control over it, but she could still do it on accident if she wasn't careful.

That was why ferry girls never attached themselves to a human. They learned of their problem when one of their species had watched a human in all her free time. The girl fell in love with a human male, and one day when she was watching him she was so absorbed in him that she became visible to him.

Soon enough she became like his imaginary friend. He thought he was going crazy at first, but all she could do was assure him that he was the first living human she had ever communicated with, and that she was confused as he.

He ended up in a mental facility, and she was with him every step of the way. That was the problem. She couldn't just make herself invisible to him.

She was punished by Koenma severely, and she still stayed with him. He became a good friend of hers, but one day he died. She guided him to the afterlife and because they communicated the hurt was so much worse for her than if they hadn't.

She quit being a ferry girl on the spot, and nobody saw her again.

Soon enough it was learned that feelings of friendship would activate it too. Any feelings of caring towards someone living would.

Botan could make herself feel something for him for the moment, and it had worked.

She made herself visible. Now she was in her own body that Koenma created her for detective work and Shuiichi was shocked.

“I'm not sure…”

Botan cringed, “I have to take you to Koenma-sama.”

“Koenma-sama?”

“Ruler of the spirit world. I'm one of his ferry girls, only some call us Grim Reapers…”

Shuiichi fainted.

Kittenn: What do you think?

Elmo: Ja!
