Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ Dragon Keeper ❯ The Investigarion Begins ( Chapter 4 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Saturday: Kiate's cafe
“Do you mind if I join you?” Yumi looked up from the book she was reading and saw Suuichi standing before her. The girl smiled at him.
“Of course not, please sit,”
Suuichi sat across from her. As he sat she took the time to study him. This was the first time she had seen him without his school uniform on. He wore beige slacks and a burgundy button down shirt, that he wore slightly open which revealed a black shirt underneath. He truly was beautiful; it was unfortunate that their paths lay in opposite directions.
A waitress had made her way to the table. “May I take your orders?”
Yumi was snapped out of her reverie, “oh yes, um… I'll have some tea with an order of green tea cakes please; would you like anything Suuichi? My treat!” She said cheerfully.
“If you insist, I will also have the green tea.” The waitress took down the orders and walked away.
Yumi discretely watched him again while he was ordering, wondering what he thought he knew about her. While they had talked at school, she sensed that he knew that she was different, as if he knew what she really was. She knew that he had been following her that night; in fact, she had reveled in the fact that he had been so bold and so perceptive. He was an intriguing one, and somehow, she sensed that he most definitely was not what he seemed. He became aware of her staring at him; she simply smirked at him, admiring his perceptive nature once again.
“So Yumi, tell me where you are from,” Kurama asked.
`So you're trying to figure me out already hmmm,' she thought. “Oh I thought you knew I was from Kyoto. I guess someone was not paying attention in class that day” she said, looking pointedly at him.
Kurama chuckled sheepishly, “well professor Omura's voice does tend to put me to sleep.”
“Yes his drawl can become quite tiresome at times,”
“So tell me, what is Kyoto like, are the shrines there as beautiful as they say. I have always wanted to visit the city but I've never had the opportunity,”
“Well, it is funny that you should mention the shrines because it just so happens that my family was well acquainted with the shrine of Shin Ryuushi and the principle shrine maiden Hitomi,”
As she finished, she noticed a slight change in Suuichi's eyes; they became sharper more keen. As if he were contemplating and storing every bit of information that she gave him to use against her. It was quite unsettling.
“A shrine dedicated to a dragon? Interesting.” `So she comes from a background of dragon worshipers, this is too coincidental,' he thought. `She must be involved.'
“I take it you're against such beliefs,” she said with cynical smirk.
“On the contrary, I believe in such things. Supernatural occurrences happen everyday, all around us. No doubt these events are caused by supernatural beings: dragons, demons, devils; which ever you prefer to call them,” he looked pointedly at her.
Her smile widened as she stared at him head on, “Perhaps… you are correct.” she said secretively, her eyes gazing directly into his pools of emerald; Suuichi gave a tiny knowing smirk in her direction, the type of smirk that let the other know that he knew every single detail and secret that was hidden behind their many layers of masks.
Yumi felt as if he had almost penetrated her mind and thoughts and she backed off from him, mentally, erecting multiple barriers around her mind and thoughts. There was definitely more to him than he was letting on. She placed her elbow on the table and rested her head in her hand. “You know, if I didn't know any better,” she said in a guarded tone, “I would think that you were accusing me of something.”
“What on earth could I possibly be accusing you of?” Kurama asked nonchalantly. As subtle as it may have been, Kurama noted the minute change in her disposition. She was more hesitant, cautious of the words she chose; which meant, she must have realized he was pumping her for information.
She really was smart, and seemingly experienced in games of the mind. It was quite obvious that she must have realized he was a possible threat. `Interesting,' he thought, `I wonder what you truly know.'
“I have no earthly clue,” she said with a seemingly lazy look in her eyes. However, he knew better, he could see the mental block she held up against him. Kurama stared into her eyes and was suddenly struck by a sense of familiarity. `That color,' he thought, it was so familiar to him somehow. The delicate way in which she joked, the color of her eyes and the hint of amusement and wealth of knowledge and secrets hidden within their depths; yes, she was definitely someone he was familiar with.
`Who are you?' he wondered to himself. He mentally shook himself, `It would do me no good to ponder these things within her presence.' It was likely that she would catch on.
He quickly decided that a changed the subject was needed, “Tell me about that torque you're wearing,” he said.
Unconsciously Yumi's hand found its way up to the stone on the torque, caressing it softly. `My torque,' she thought. Her eyes flicked up into his unruffled viridian eyes, with no emotions visible on her face. He truly must know something. Unconsciously a small smirk slid across her face. “This is just an heirloom that Hitomi-san gave me when I left Kyoto,” she fingered the heavy garnet stone in the torque, “it is said to protect its possessor from evil by sucking the life out of any being that poses a threat to them. Beautiful, don't you think Suuichi?” She said pointedly, looking him dead in the eyes.
His eyes flew down to her torque and back to her eyes, “Yes, beautiful and dangerous. I have noticed throughout my years of living that the two, beauty and danger, often go hand in hand with one another; wouldn't you agree?” he asked, meeting her challenging gaze.
Her smirk widened slightly at his answer, “absolutely,” was all she said.
Kurama's thoughts headed back to the other night when he saw Yumi meet the strange women in the ally. Hiei had warned him about getting entangled with her
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Hiei stood on the ledge of the building, his back facing Kurama, “If she is the enemy it will be difficult for you to pump the information out of her.” The short fire demon removed his lingering gaze from off of the retreating form of Yumi and up to Kurama's face. “I doubt that your… conquest over this girl will be as easy the victory over your irksome ningen fan club.”
Kurama raised an eyebrow suggestively at his friend, “Well Hiei, you say that as if you wish to be the one to ensnare her… well, I never thought that I would see the day that Hiei Jaganshi would take an interest in a woman.”
“Ch, stupid fox. Do not entertain such idiotic thoughts as those; doing so will likely get you killed.”
Kurama smirked at his friend's remark, “Forgive me Hiei, I had no idea that you were so sensitive about the subject,”
“If I were you, I would stop worrying about other peoples' personal lives and start worrying about my own. This girl is most likely smarter than you think. She may actually wind up ensnaring you kitsune,”
A devilish sneer slid across Hiei's face as he witnessed slight tinges of gold stain the kitsune's eyes; a sure sign that the fox was irked. He so loved to piss him off. He was rarely given the opportunity to do so; however, the long wait only made the situation all the sweeter.
Kurama's eyes narrowed slightly at Hiei's sneer, “I don't get ensnared,” the fox in him had risen to the challenge.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Perhaps Hiei had a point, he was intrigued by her, but, he would not fall for her traps. If anyone would be ensnared it would be her.
The waitress had returned with their food. Yumi's eyes had lit up when she saw the cakes. She thanked the waitress and took a bite of the tea cake and her eyes rolled back in ecstasy, “this cake is incredible! I love this café!” She said enthusiastically. All traces of the defensive challenger were gone and all that was left was her guise of the quiet school girl. Kurama followed her lead and took a bite of the cake.
“Indeed, this is delicious; no wonder it is a popular restaurant.” He said, still keeping an eye on Yumi.
The two sat in silence, enjoying their snacks. Yumi would occasionally look out of the café window, staring at the scenery. Kurama watched her from beneath lowered lids. As he watched her, he felt a slight sense of comfort overcome him. He couldn't place it, but, her presence felt so familiar to him some how. He stopped looking at her, trying to will the feelings of comfort from his mind, and began to focus on other methods to continue observing her activities. Suddenly an idea presented itself. “Yumi,” he said, breaking the silence between them. She looked up from the teacup she was drinking from, “I was wondering if you would like to attend a carnival with me,”
Yumi looked to the side hesitantly, “you mean like a date,” she said surprised that he would ask her so suddenly.
Kurama chuckled to himself, `so it starts,' he thought to himself. Another addition to the army of his many female admirers. “No, not like a date, I just have some friends that would really like to meet you, and I think you'll find them interesting as well.” He said.
“Well, I've never been to a carnival before, I would love to go, and I would love to meet your friends as well,”
“Excellent,” `this way, the others will be able to check her out, and if she tries to manifest herself, we'll all be there to stop her,' he thought.
The waitress had come back with their check; she made a dramatic yawn as Yumi paid the woman. “That's strange, there is hardly anyone here, this place was packed when we first got here.”
Kurama looked around the café and noticed that they were like the only ones left in the café. The only other group of people left in the café was barely awake, three people were asleep in their food and two others were well on their way. The waitress and chef behind the counter were nearly dead on their feet as well. “Yes, it was,” `interesting,' he thought.
“Are you ready to go Suuichi?” Yumi was already out of her chair and ready to go.
“Yes, let's go,”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~
Hiei jumped through the trees of the dark forest, tracking down the energy signal he had sensed from the demon Kai. He had, since the night before, decided that he'd be damned if he sat around waiting for someone to hunt him down. The signal grew stronger and stronger the deeper he ran into the forest. Suddenly he came to a clearing with a hot spring in the center of it. `She's here,' the steam from the spring made it difficult to see clearly, but, he could barely make out a silhouette in the middle of the spring. As if by command, the steam began to clear, revealing a very naked Kai standing with her back turned to him, in the center of the hot spring. Her back was covered with tattoos of two dueling black dragons. The larger and dominant one was obviously the dark dragon he summoned.
Kai turned to face Hiei, giving him a full view of all of her assets. Hiei's right eyebrow rose as he stared Kai up and down, taking in the view of her voluptuous body “Nice tattoo,” he said in a low suggestive tone chocked full of innuendo.
Kai smiled seductively at him, twirling her midnight tresses around her finger, “yours isn't bad either.” She said nodding her head towards his bandaged right arm, the arm which held the mark of the dark dragon.
“Hn, I saw a ningen movie like this once. It had the same scenery as this: a hot spring and a naked whore with snake tattoos all over her body standing in the spring, much like you are now. Don't tell me those dragons are going to start moving on your body and coming out of other hidden cavities?”
Kai cocked up her eyebrows, “I assure you Hiei that that will not happen here.”
“Oh darn,” he said sarcastically, “that bitch was actually entertaining. Well since you have nothing to offer me, I guess I'll kill you now.”
With that Hiei began to raise his youki to launch an attack. When he was powered up, he drew his sword and charged towards Kai. When he got close enough to attack, he noticed that black dragon wings had appeared from behind her back. The wings were coming from the tattoo on her back. Hiei performed a lateral cut along Kai, but, before his blade could enter her flesh, it made contact with the black wings and broke. Stunned, Hiei jumped back to witness the transformation her body was going through. The wings began to wrap around her body forming a type of clothing.
“DRAGON ARMOR!!!” she cried before black flames began to consume her. When the flames died down, Kai had on a tight, long, black coat that only buttoned at her waist and flared towards her feet and tight black pants with tall high heeled boots. The entire outfit looked like it was made out of black dragon scales.
“What the hell,” Hiei said in awe as he watched Kai.
She began to laugh at the shocked expression on his face, “you have no idea what you have gotten yourself into Hiei.” She said as a dark blackish purple aura began to surround her body.
To be continued.
The movie Hiei was referring to was Ninja Scroll. The part where Benisato was fighting Jubei at the hot spring right before he was poisoned. That's a kick ass scene.
End of chapter 5, next chapter, Hiei vs. Kai. Finally the action is here!!! And maybe a little s and m.
