Falling Rain

Reality was cruel, he knew, but that knowledge had never been as painful as it was now.

His sad green eyes turned towards the darkened sky, he stood there, in the middle of the deserted park, getting soaked by the rain as it fell over his tired form.

How many days had he been like this? How much time had passed since they told him? He didn't know, and he didn't have the strength to care anymore.

His friends were worried, but he paid no mind, his reason for living, the person he wished to protect the most was slipping away from him like water between his fingers.

He walked deeper inside the solitary park, his thoughts on his mother.

She had fallen terribly ill, again, but this time there was nothing he could do to save her.

Koenma had told him a demon had cursed her soul in a way that it was slowly separating from her body and as that happened, her body was dying. And the only way to save her was to find a soul healer, but Koenma knew none of those.

He had killed the demon as soon as he knew, but it had been to late to save his human mother, and because of that, she was dying.

And the worst part was that he could do nothing but watch.

He sighed in despair once more as he walked deeper inside, he looked towards a big oak tree and stopped dead in his tracks.

Sitting on one of the oak's branches was a teenage girl, around his age more less, she wore a simple long sleeved white shirt and light yellow pants with white boots, her hair was long and light brown in color, it was untied and fell all the way to her hips in soft waves.

But what shocked him the most were the pair of ivory wings in the girl's back.

he approached cautiously, but he stepped over a twig, the girl heard the sound and turned her head towards him, her amethyst eyes locked with his green ones, and there was something both eyes had.

Sadness.

Even if by different reasons, Kurama noticed the sad glint in the clear eyes of the girl.

"If may I ask, what are you doing here?" Kurama asked softly, and the girl's eyes widened.

"You can see me?" She asked, astonished.

"Yes, of course I can." Kurama answered.

"You are no normal human, then." She said as Kurama walked to the tree where she was sitting. "You are soaking wet."

"I'll be fine." Kurama said, looking at the sky.

"My mother used to tell me that if something is bothering you, you should tell someone." The girl said, smiling softly.

"Your mother...I am about to lose my own." Kurama said sadly.

"Sickness?" The girl asked.

"Something like that, it has no cure, as my 'boss' told me."

The girl frowned slightly, but her eyes remained gentle upon his form. "A demon curse."

"How did-" Kurama asked, shocked, but was cut short by the girl's gentle smile and voice.

"I know about those things."

Kurama turned to look at her. "You are not human, are you?"

"Yes and no." The girl responded softly, then, her eyes took a faraway look. "Your mother is not dead, you know, and if at the end she dies, you souldn't throw your life away, I am sure she wouldn't like it, and also, you should be happy just to be alive, not everyone is so lucky."

"What do you know?" Kurama snapped softly.

"I should know." The girl turned sad eyes towards his own, and a melancholic smile appeared in her soft lips. "I died."

"I see you pretty much alive."

The girl's eyes returned to stare right ahead of her. "Don't let appearances fool you, I died and Enma-sama turned me into one of his messengers, I am a human turned angel."

"King Enma?" Kurama softly.

"Yeah, when I died 50 years ago, he turned me into an angel so I could report everything that happened in Ningenkai to him." She said as she continued to stare at nothing.

"I work for his son, Koenma." Kurma said softly.

"I know." She smiled slightly. "Botan is always talking with Ayame about you and your friends, specially the jaganshi."

"Really?" Kurama said amused. "I wonder what Hiei would say if he knew."

"Probably threaten her." The girl grinned.

"Then you know my name." Kurama smiled up to her.

"Minamino Shuuichi, but everyone calls you Kurama." The girl answered with a grin.

"But I do not know yours." Kurama said, smiling softly.

"Kiseki Sakurai." The girl answered.

"Kiseki? You are the first girl I know with that name, you know." Kurama said gently.

"I suppose you know." Kiseki said smiling.

There were a few minutes of silence, in which Kurama wondered about something.

"Ano ne, Sakurai-san." Kurama began, but Kiseki cut him short.

"Kiseki." She said with a smile. "Call me Kiseki."

"Then please call me Kurama." The kitsune said with a smile. "Kiseki, can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"How did...How did you die?"

Kiseki's eyes widened slightly and her head jerked towards him, a complete look of shook in her soft features, but then they soften into her trademark smile and gentle eyes before she turned back to stare at nothing. "I was killed in a robbery, I was shot 6 times, but I died of blood loss in my brother's arms before the ambulance could take me to the hospital."

"I am sorry to hear that." Kurama admitted softly.

"It's okay." Kiseki said with an absent smile. "You must enjoy life while you are living it, Kurama, because you don't know what a fool you where until you die."

"I will keep that in mind."

Kiseki nodded, smiling softly. "It's getting late, you should get back home, I am sure that everything will be better tomorrow."

"I hope so, Kiseki, I hope so." Kurama said, and with a little wave he began walking back home.

"Kurama..."

Kiseki's soft voice stopped him, but he didn't turn to face her.

"...Anata wa hitori ja nai..."

Kurama turned around, shocked, only to find that the spot Kiseki had been previously in was empty, and she was nowhere to be found, either.

Kurama smiled softly, after the meeting with the human turned angel, he felt refreshed.

But as he settled down to sleep, he began dreading tomorrow.

Because tomorrow was the last day of the curse, tomorrow morning, his mother would die.

===========================================

The phone rang around 8 am the next morning, he had been awake since 6 am, not able to sleep.

He heard his step-father pick of the phone and after a few minutes, he let out a strangled cry, fearing the worst, he buried his head in his pillows, but soon after that, his step-father rushed inside the room, a big smile in his face.

"Shuuichi!! A miracle has happened!! Shiori has healed!!" He shouted.

Without wasting time, Kurama jumped out of his already made out bed, having taken a bath since he woke up, and rushed outside and ran to the hospital, he was led to his mother's room, and upon entering, he saw her sitting up in bed, smiling softly at him.

Kurama smiled and walked to her, kneeling next to his mother, he took her hands in his. "I am so glad you are alright, mother."

"I'm glad too, when I thought was finally going to die, an angel appeared inside the room, she had gentle eyes and gentle smile, she said something but I don't remember what, she then touched my cheek, that's all I remember, it must have been a dream."

Kurama moved away when his step-brother and step-father walked inside, he moved to the window, where a table was located, in it rested his mother's favorite book, but what surprised him the most, was the beautiful and silky ivory colored feather, he then looked at the book's title and his heart stopped.

"Angel's Miracle, by Daija Sakurai." He whispered, then he took the book and opened it in the first page.

To my mother and father, who loved me enough to follow me in the path I had chosen.

To my beloved sister, who protected me with her life and said she loved me even with her last breath, is truly for her why I write this book, because anywhere you might be now, I know you are watching over me.

December 13th 1949.

"the author wrote that book 7 years after his sister's death, she had been around your age when she died." Shiori said, looking at Kurama, before turning to speak with his step-father.

Kurama turned back to the feather, which was in his hands, a smile spread in his lips. -Arigatou, Kiseki.-

Meanwhile, in Reikai, the brown haired angel whispered back with a smile. "Douitashimashite."
