Kurama woke in the middle of the night, freezing. He had no idea that the temperature would drop this low. He looked over at the clock and saw that there was no big bright red numbers, meaning the power was still off. He looked out the window and saw that the storm was still raging on. A sound from the bed caught his attention and he turned his head to Hiei.
Hiei had an annoyed look on his face and grumbled something in his sleep before he went back to snoring softly, or was it purring…who knew. Kurama grinned. He had never seen Hiei so vulnerable, but even in his sleep, Hiei seemed on guard. He noticed that at some point during the night, Hiei rid himself of the T-shirt, probably in aggravation for possibly getting tangled up in it. Kurama shivered as he wrapped his blanket more tightly around him. Surely, Hiei wouldn't mind if he crawled in the bed with him would he? Having decided that Hiei wouldn't be bothered, Kurama stood up and threw his blanket over the bed before turning back the covers and climbing in.
"What the hell?" Hiei muttered sleepily as he felt the mattress give with added weight. "Shit, Kurama your damn hands are like ice!" Hiei grumbles gruffly as Kurama places a hand on his shoulder with the intention of getting his attention, which worked a little too well.
"Sorry Hiei, I was going to ask you if I could sleep in the bed with you. It's really cold and the power is still out." Kurama retracted his hand and started to get back out of the bed when all he received from Hiei was silence.
"Stupid fox, if you are going to sleep in bed with me, at least warm your damn hands." Hiei grabs Kurama's hands and raises his you-ki enough to warm the digits.
"Thank you." Kurama says softly, touched by the kindness in Hiei's gesture.
"Go to sleep." Hiei turned his back to Kurama and muttered something about foxes talking too much. Kurama just smiled at Hiei's back before snuggling against him. Hiei stiffened for a moment but didn't protest as Kurama laid his head against his back.
"You're so warm Hiei." Kurama sighed, halfway asleep. Hiei gulped. What was that baka kitsune doing now? A small whimper escaped Hiei at the thought of someone invading his personal space. It took awhile, but Hiei finally fell back asleep.
*******
The sound of someone pounding on the door brought Kurama out of his peaceful slumber. He squinted his eyes against the bright light in the room and moaned. He started to stand up and answer the door, but found that there was a weight on his chest. He looked down to see Hiei curled up against him with his head on his chest. Kurama tried to move without waking the fire demon, but the slight movement caused Hiei to whimper and grab a fist full of Kurama's pajama top. The pounding resumed again and Kurama scowled at the door. This was a precious moment…Hiei cuddling was something that he wanted to engrave in his memory, but alas it could not be. Whenever he found out who was on the other side of that door, he would make sure that they would pay for ruining this moment.
"Hiei?" Kurama whispered lightly, not wanting to startle the angry little demon. "Hiei, we have to get up now." Kurama said a little louder while shaking him. Hiei opened his eyes with a start and rolled over on top of Kurama with his fist pulled back. "AH!! HIEI!!" Kurama shouted as he noticed where that fist was aimed.
The door suddenly busted open to admit Yusuke and Kuwabara. First, they just looked at each other in shock. That position wasn't exactly innocent. Then, they realized that Hiei had his fist pulled back, so Yusuke jumped and tackled Hiei. The still partially sleeping fire demon began kicking and yelling.
"No, stop. No more, please no more." Yusuke jerked back when he heard the youkai's desperate pleas. As soon as the weight left him, Hiei curled up into a little ball, bringing his knees to his chest and whimpering softly.
"Hey man, it's me…Yusuke." Yusuke rubbed his back softly, enough to let him know that he wasn't a threat, and hopefully wake him up. Instead of Hiei waking, he curled up into a tighter ball and started trembling. "I swear I didn't do anything to him." Yusuke says in a panic as Kurama approaches them.
"Go downstairs and make yourselves at home. I'll take care of this." Kurama says in a soft voice. Yusuke nods and drags Kuwabara downstairs. Kurama kneels next to Hiei and strokes his hair. "Shh…its okay Hiei…I'm here now." Kurama picked up the trembling Hiei and went back to the bed. Kurama just rocked him for a few moments, before he feels Hiei start to move. The fire demon jerked awake suddenly, almost knocking Kurama in the face with his head.
"Kurama? What the…?" Hiei tried to get his bearings and found that he was on Kurama's lap in the bed. He tried to push away from the kitsune, but Kurama held tight. He knew that he would have to hurt him to break his hold, so Hiei gave up and sat still.
"Want to talk about it?" Kurama said in a soothing voice, reaching up to stroke Hiei's hair damp with sweat.
"No, I want you to let me go." Hiei's voice was thick with tears he was trying to hold back. Kurama sighed and held Hiei closer.
"It's okay to cry. Everyone does it and there is nothing weak about it." Kurama had a feeling that Hiei needed to cry. No one knew what the little half-koorime had been through in his life, but, if this was any indication, it had been rough for him.
"I'm not going to cry fox, so please let me go." Kurama conceded and Hiei climbed off his lap. The fire demon walked over to the foot of the bed, and put on the discarded T-shirt. He sat down on the bed and dropped his head. Kurama scooted himself down to be behind Hiei and placed a hand on his shoulder.
"There is nothing to be ashamed about Hiei. Crying sometimes makes it feel better." Kurama lightly rubbed Hiei's shoulder, feeling the tense muscles underneath. There was something very disturbing about seeing Hiei like this. Someone so strong, looking so broken just shouldn't be allowed.
"I'm not ashamed Kurama." Hiei stated simply, not elaborating.
"Then just let it go." Kurama said softly.
"Can't, I'm afraid." Hiei said almost inaudibly.
"Afraid of what, that I might tell someone?" Kurama said in a joking tone, while nudging Hiei.
"No," was the only reply received.
"What then? Hiei, please talk to me." Kurama pleaded. He had the feeling that he was the only one that had ever showed Hiei any hint of concern.
"I'm afraid that once I start, I won't be able to stop." Having said that, Hiei quit the room and left a stunned Kurama sitting on the bed. Kurama felt his heart breaking for the tiny youkai and wondered subconsciously just when it was that he started to care for the little punk.
Kurama went downstairs to find Yusuke and Kuwabara sitting quietly at the table, eating. He did not see Hiei anywhere and became worried. He looked at Yusuke with questioning green eyes. Yusuke nodded his head toward the laundry room and Kurama quietly walked over and opened the door.
"Damn it, fox, don't you knock?" Hiei growled as he pulled up his pants. Kurama entered the room and shut the door behind him.
"Did you find out why Yusuke is here?" Kurama did his best to sound conversational.
"Koenma wants to talk to us obviously." Hiei rolled his eyes as he finished buttoning his cloak. Kurama could only shake his head at Hiei's attitude.
"What's going on Yusuke?" Kurama asked as he and Hiei return to the room.
"We are having a problem in the Makai. Some demon is trying to take of the Ningenkai (as usual). He needs a sacrifice, so we have to protect his prospective 'sacrificial lamb,' if you will." Having finished his speech, Yusuke shovels more food into his mouth.
"We have to meet up with Koenma to get details." Kuwabara finished for Yusuke.
"Just let me get ready. I'll try not to take too long." Kurama left the room about the same time, Botan appears.
"You guys ready? This is going to be a tough one." Botan sighed as she sat at the table.
"Kurama isn't ready yet, and you know how he gets." Yusuke said well naturedly. A few moments later, Kurama rushed into the room buttoning his pink uniform jacket.
"I'm ready." He stopped suddenly to smooth his hair and straighten his jacket. The three at the table looked at each other, then at the impeccable Kurama, and finally at Hiei who just shrugged. "What?" Kurama asked the group of confused faces.
"Gee, Kurama, even when you're in a hurry, you're still so…composed." Yusuke chuckled, Hiei rolled his eyes, and Kurama blushed.
"Well as impressive as Kurama's composure may seem, we have a job to do." Hiei growled.
"Hey, the shrimp is actually wanting to help this time around," Kuwabara practically shouted.
"Hn. Shows how much you know, stupid ningen. I just want to hurry up and get this over with so I can get away from you fools as soon as I can." Hiei started walking toward the group. "Well, since princess is ready, let's go."
Kurama flinched at Hiei's statement, not sure why it hurt so much. Usually Hiei's jabs just went in one ear and out the other, but this time it really hurt. It was almost like a knife to the heart. But why? Kurama knew that Hiei was rough around the edges (to say the least), and that he should expect Hiei's cynicism and sarcasm. So, why did it bother him that Hiei put him down once in awhile? He couldn't understand this feeling of inferiority when Hiei said that comment. He just wanted Hiei to see him as more than a comrade in arms. He sighed as he followed the gang out the door, knowing that it would never happen.
