Chapter 5

Ignorance & Surprise

He was close, just a few more minutes and he would have everything to fulfill his dream. He had waited days for this, and the opportunity had finally presented itself. He had worked tirelessly to make sure that everything went as planed. If all his information was correct, he would be in and out before anyone could notice. The world would kneel to Herald Torrance, as was his destiny.

Herald ran a hand through his shaggy brown hair and straightened his black coke bottle glasses. Using his hand he brushed the sides of his leather jacket and felt the bulge in his pocket that was the sphere.

Making sure nobody was around he jumped over the gate and cut across the museum grounds. He reached into one of his pockets and then stopped. He looked through the other one and then bent down to go through his bag.

`Where is it? .....I just had the stupid thing? .....Where the hell is the map?'

One by one, all the items he had brought were tossed over his shoulder until there was nothing left. He held the bag upside down and shook it, but only a few bits of dirt and paper fell out. He sat there on the ground silently, his tools and a few personal belonging all around him.

Herald stood up and put his hands on either side of his face. Took several deep breaths and began to jump around, arms flapping and cursed under his breath. This went on for several minutes until his foot landed on the shape end of the crowbar he had idly tossed.

He did however, have enough sense to clamp one hand over his mouth so no one would hear him yell. The other hand was holding his injured foot and for several second he hoped on one leg, still cursing. This finally ended when his good foot landed on a bit of muddy grass, causing him to slip, and he was soon flat on his back.

The splitting headache he now had seemed to finally calm him down so, he carefully packed his bag, smoothed his brown hair, and straightened his glasses. He looked around again and seeing no one there, used his advance sense of direction.

"Eeny...meany...miny...moe."

30 minutes later

He picked the wrong building twice, fell into a fish pound, and knocked over a trash can. This had alerted several security guards and he spent a good ten minutes avoiding them. After backtracking a few times and hiding from a dog in a wastebin, he finally made it to the right building.

He stopped by a door that read `employees only', rifled through his bag and began to pick the lock. His hands shook nervously and started to sweat making the task longer then it should have. After a few agenizing seconds the lock unbolted with a satisfying click.

He was about to go in but heard something near a row of bushes. His hand automatically went to his jacket pocket and his fingers caressed the sphere. A large black cat came running out of the bushes, stopped to look at him and then ran off into the darkness.

67 minutes later

It took him thirty minutes to find the basement, deactivate the security system, cut the phone lines and get back to the ground floor. Another ten to incapacitate three of the guards who discovered him. Twenty, for the pepper spray (that he managed to spray on himself) to wear off so he could see. Finally seven minutes to use the sphere so he could set fire to the dog that nearly bit his right leg off.

While bleeding, limping, half blinded and wet he made his way through the building and finally lade eyes on his prize. He longed to touch what he had worked so hard and suffered so many injuries for.

However, there was a slight problem of four boys standing in his way. Two of them busted out laughing and pointed their fingers at him. One seemed very interested with something on the floor, while the other was having a coughing fit.

"As long as I live I will never forget this night....they look on your....the dog running after....oh man that was classic." One of the boys said between laughs.

"Oh man I never saw anyone so unlucky in my life." Said another.

Kida stood on the rooftop of the museum and stared down through the glass of the large ornate skylight. A cold breeze rushed across her skin and she stared up at the sky. The bright lights of the city reflected off the dense cloud cover turning the sky an almost rose color. She had been up here for over an hour, just as her prey had entered the building. Even though possession of the sphere made him a very dangerous man, she could not help but be mortified. He was a complete and utter fool.

Despite all this, he was lest of her worries. She looked down at her current problem standing not, but twenty feet bellow her. It was the three boys she met in the park, who were not all they appeared to be.

Hossam was positive that at least one of them was a demon, the others he could not be sure. He never got close enough to the small one in black to tell, and the other two were a complete mystery.

None of this mattered to Kida, whatever they were, she could not let them take hold of the sphere. Having the sphere in the hands of a human was disastrous, but in the hands of a demon it would be catastrophic.

She watched as her first problem (the human) came face to face with the other four. She wasn't quite sure but she thought two of them were laughing. Kida was a bit confused sense she didn't see this as a laughing matter at all.

Her heart pounded in her chest as she readied herself. She had no more time to think, whatever she was going to do, she would have to do it soon. She calmed her nerves and took slow and even breaths. The wind started to pick up, but she paid no heed to it.

Her limbs became numb and time seemed to slow as she gathered all of her energy. She focused all her attention to the happenings below her, waiting for just the right moment to strike.

Her brief moment of concentration was interrupted however, by a pair of firm hands on either side of her neck. She let out the breath she was holding and then tilted her head back. Kida was met with a pair of deep blue eyes, half covered by a shaggy mane of red hair.

"Uh.......Hi."

Heralds' soul seemed to shatter at the sight of these four boys. The last hour had wounded his confidence, not to mention his pride. Though still determined to finish his task, it was not very satisfying to finally reaching the last leg of his journey, only to be met by belittling comments.

Why were the heavens against him? Why would they show him the path only to litter the ground with mishaps and radicle? Well, it wouldn't work. He had come too far to stop now. He was tired. Tired of sitting on the floor waiting for scraps from those who gorged themselves on the feast. Tired of working for something only to have it snatched away form him at the end.

He could feel the heat from the sphere pulsating in his hand. It fueled his furry like gasoline to a fire, until it consumed every part of him. He lifted the sphere from his pocket and held it at arms length. Its silver hieroglyphs glowing as he whispered the words of his vengeance.

Yusuke and Kuwabara stopped laughing as a strange humming sound filled the room. The air was growing thick and hot and a strange wind blew from nowhere.

"Perhaps laughing at him was not the best ideal." Kurama said.

Yusuke and the others agreed. Their strange thief didn't look so ridiculous anymore. He looked mad and quite menacing. Hiei cursed, and they watched as the man began to chant something under his breath. A few seconds later millions of tiny red embers came shooting out of the sphere.

They gathered in the air like a swarm of fireflies and then split in two. They hung suspended in the air, swirling like two small storms, then suddenly plunged to the ground and bursted into flames.

The two fires raged, billowing out siring thick smoke. The flames spun and warped themselves into two massive lions with glowing red eyes. Every part of them radiated intense heat, making the room feel like a desert. Then they opened their mouths letting lose a deafening roar that shook the entire room.

"Well, guys no time like the present." Yusuke said as the fiery lions stalked toward them.

"You deal with our real target, and we'll take care of the rest. " Said Hiei.

Kuwabara unleashed his spirit sword and charged at one of the lions. It took one quick swiped at him that not only tore his jacket but immediately set it ablaze. Kuwabara let out a scream and danced away while trying to remove the flaming article from off his back.

Hiei chose that moment to jump in with his sword, and in less then a second, sliced countless times through the beast. It gave a faint snarl before its body shattered into a million tiny embers. They spread across the floor like red-hot beads, setting fire to everything they touched.

"All right shorty, way to work together!" Shouted Kuwabara, as he finished stamping out the smoldering remains of his jacket.

"Shut up fool and try to make yourself useful." Hiei said pointing to where the lion had just stood.

The burning fragments were converging once more and within seconds the big cat was once again glaring at them. It gave another roar, its hatred seeming to magnify its flaming body. With lightning speed it sprang, and the two scattered.

The other lion was busy chasing down Kurama who was quite effortlessly avoiding its attacks. Kurama lead the beast all round the large room, finely cornering it between a display case and the wall. He didn't waste a single moment, severing it into multiple pieces with his rose whip. As with the other it shattered, only to reform seconds later, glowering at him hatefully.

Herald watched happily as his minions dealt with this new obstacle. He could feel his heart racing with the excitement of it all. Again and again, his fire creatures were cut down only to reform anew. This defiantly put a bandage on his waning confidence.
