First Encounter
"Oh no! I'm going to be late! And this is my first day too. I hope my Sensei will excuse me ". Jessica shouted to her alarm clock that decided not to work today. Today was Jessica's first day of Japanese school. She just moved to Japan from America about a week ago. Jessica really wanted to go to school in Japan, but her parents didn't want to move away, so they let her go here by herself. 'I guess I am old enough to live on my own. I now live in Mushori City, and go to Mushori High School. Since I live so close to school I have to walk there. Well right now, run there is more like it.'
"You're late Watsuki-san, that's not good for your first day." "I'm sorry Sensei, it won't happen again, I promise." "See that it doesn't. Please introduce yourself to the class Watsuki-san." "Yes Sensei. Hello my name is Jessica Watsuki; I just moved here from America. I'm still having some problems speaking Japanese so please excuse me if I accidentally speak English sometimes, but I'll try my hardest to learn all there is to know about the Japanese language. Thank you." "Very well Jessica-san please take a seat next to Minamino-san over there." "Yes Sensei."
'Wow I feel so stupid being late like that on my first day. Oh well at least I got through my introduction with no grammar or vocabulary trouble. I'm not very good at speaking in front of a group of people especially not in Japanese. Well my classmates seem nice enough; they didn't make fun of me or anything. Lets see, that guy over there looks like the class nerd with those big glasses and squinty eyes. And that guy looks like the class punk with his messed up hair and toned muscles. Oh that guy over there looks funny; his hair is sticking straight up, and he's really tall. Everyone else looks pretty normal, oh, except for the guy sitting next to me. Wow what beautiful red hair he has. I wonder if he is a foreigner like me. Oh and he has green eyes, he must be from a different country. He can't possibly be Japanese. I wonder why he keeps looking at me out of the corner of his eye. Maybe there's something on my face.' Jessica took out her mirror. 'Nope, nothing unusual. Maybe there's something on my shirt, nope nothing unusual there either. Humm…'
"Watsuki-san can you answer the question?" Sensei asked, interrupting her thoughts. "Ummm… Ummm…" "Pissst… its Mt. Fuji." Whispered the boy next to Jessica. "Oh, the answer is Mt Fuji". "Very good Watsuki-san, you seem to know a few things about Japan's geography." Sensei replied. Then he went back to teaching the lesson. "Thanks Minamino-sama." Jessica whispered. "Sama?" The red haired boy's eyes widened. "Oh wait that's the wrong one I mean Minamino-chan. No wait that's wrong too. Hold on a second, ummm is it Minamino-kun. Is that right?" "Yes, that's correct." "I'm so sorry, my Japanese is still really bad." "No, it's not bad at all. Aside from that little mix-up it sounds very fluent." "Thanks again Minamino-kun."
Jessica finally cleared her mind of her previous thoughts and got to listen to the rest of the Sensei's lesson. "Well that's all for today's lesson, we finished up a little early so feel free to talk to your classmates until the bell rings." 'Wow if my life is going to be like this everyday I'm not going to learn much. I have to stop daydreaming.' "Excuse me Watsuki-san". "Yes? Oh hello Minamino-kun, at first I thought you were the Sensei. Please call me just Jessica, I'm not used to all these special endings, and people my age calling me by my last name." "Oh certainly, well in that case you don't have to refer to me as Minamino-kun, you can just call me Shuichi." "Sure." "Well I wanted to ask you if you had any friends or family in Japan?" "No, I moved here by myself to experience Japanese culture and schooling." "I see. Well in that case please consider me a friend, you can always come to me if your having trouble getting adjusted to Japan, I can speak English, and I've lived in Japan all of this life." "You know English!" "Indeed, I learned English when I was a young boy, so please if you ever have a problem or you just need someone to talk to, you can come to me." "Thank you so much. This helps a lot since I don't have any other friends in Japan, and all my family is back in America."
"RING…RING…RING". " Oh well there's the bell do you walk home, or do you relay on public transportation to get home?" Shuichi asked. "I live really close by so I walk." "Same with me." "From the school gates which way do you go?" "I go left." "What a coincidence, me too. You want to walk together than?" "Sure." Shuichi replied "So how do you like Japan so far?" "I love it. Ever since I was little I wanted to go to Japan. But I do miss my family, and friends back in America." "Yes I too would be very sad if I moved away from my mother." "Yes it's a hard thing to do, I almost didn't go, but it was a really good opportunity for me, and I couldn't pass it up." "Yes, I agree, it is a great opportunity for foreigners to come and study in Japan." "Yeah...oh, here's my apartment complex." "Really! What a coincidence I live in this complex too." "Are you serious?" "Yes, me and my mother live in room #312 on the 3rd floor.” “OMG! I live in room #313 on the 3rd floor!” “Well I guess that means we're neighbors.” “Wow this is weird.” “Yes I have to admit, it is quite strange that after all this time…opps I mean that you just happen to move in next door to me. Well I guess this just makes things easier for us to become friends. Well than Jessica, I will see you tomorrow.” He said hurriedly, while his face started to turn crimson. “Ummm…bye Shuichi.” Then Shuichi ran off up the stairs to the 3rd floor.
Jessica slowly climbed the stairs up to the 3rd floor, unlocked her door, and dropped her stuff on the floor of her new apartment. `Wow that was weird. He didn't have to just take off like that; he could of walked with me to the 3rd floor at least. What did he mean by “after all this time”. I've never met him before today. Humm… maybe he is American and we met when we were little and I just don't remember. I think he is older than me so if we did meet as children he's more likely to remember it than I am. Still it was weird. But Shuichi seems really polite, and kind. And he's smart too. I'm not afraid of him; he's a nice guy. If it was some creepy looking guy, instead of Shuichi, who tried to walk me home and acted like he knew me, than I would be freaked out. I would probably think he was a stalker, but there's something about Shuichi, that's familiar. Maybe we did meet each other as kids and I just don't remember. Wait didn't he say that he had lived in Japan all of this life. So he couldn't be American. And what did he mean by “all of this life”. It doesn't make any sense. Well Japanese people do believe in past lives, so maybe he said “all of this life” so I wouldn't think he was talking about a past life or something. But that's kind of stupid, why would I think he was talking about a past life. Oh well, I think I'm worrying too much about this. Shuichi is a really nice guy I don't think I need to really worry about him. Well I guess I should write a letter to home now. My mom told me to write her a letter after my first day of school.'
Dear Mom, and Dad,
How are things going without me? I'm doing great in Japan. I already made a new friend. His name is Shuichi Minamino. He's in my class. School is good, and my Sensei is really nice. Today I was late for school, but he excused me. I thought all Japanese Sensei's were really strict, but I guess not. Say hi to my friends for me. I will call you guys once I learn how to use a Japanese phone, or whenever I unpack my cell phone.
Love ya all,
Jessica
`I wonder where the mailbox is. Oh well I've been meaning to take a walk around the apartments to get to know the place.' Jessica grabbed her letter and headed out of her apartment. As soon as she opened the door she saw Shuichi standing there. “Oh hi Shuichi” “Hello Jessica, I was wondering if I could borrow your Geography textbook. I must of left mine at school.” “Sure you can borrow it, I don't need to use it tonight.” “Thanks Jessica.” “Stay right here let me go get it.” “ Sure.” Jessica ran inside and looked through her backpack, and took out her Geography textbook. “Here it is Shuichi.” “Oh thanks Jessica. Well I guess I will see you tomorrow.” “Yeah… wait I forgot to ask you where are the mailboxes for this place?” “Oh there right down there by the street.” “Thanks Shuichi, see you tomorrow.” The whole way to the mailbox Jessica could feel Shuichi staring at her.
A/N: So many questions. Why was Shuichi Staring at Jessica? What's with Shuichi messing up all his sentences, he's supposed to be smart? What's going to happen with this quickly forming friendship? Most of these questions, and more will be answered in the next chapter, which I will put up within the next hour ^_^
