Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ Forgotten Tears ❯ Chapter 2
~*~I own Nanashi and Osamu, no one else here.
An eerie silence fell upon the group, surprise and bewilderment taking away the humans' words. Kuwabara had his usual perplexed look scrunched up in his face as Keiko stared with innocent stupidity at Botan. Hiei and Kurama looked away, bored, as if they already knew what was to come. Only Yusuke struggled to find his tongue and asked,
"What the hell does the robbery have to do with the Spirit World? It's just a really talented thief who stole some big rock; why does it concern Koenma?"
Kurama answered, "The diamond that was stolen has spiritual powers; it could unleash unimaginable things upon all worlds. You have no idea how dangerous it is."
When Kurama found only blank faces in response, he smiled eerily and continued.
"The diamond stolen is part of the Shinsongyui Yulshi; specifically, it's the mi poong..."
Keiko timidly raised her hand, as if she was asking a teacher a question at school, and said. "Kurama-san, this is all very interesting and all, but I have no idea what you're saying with shit song ewe and whatever."
Kurama laughed a little and answered, "Gome ne, Keiko-chan. I'm just used to calling it by the old Silphunia name. See, Shinsongyui Yulshi means the 'Divine Keys" and mi poong means the 'Air'. The Silphunia are the ancient race that created the seven keys to lock the hell that threatened to annihilate the world. So far, all we know is that six of the keys were molded into various stones. Mi poong, air, is the diamond. Mi, earth, is an emerald. Yuu suu, water, is a sapphire. Cho Yul, fire, is a ruby. Young Guan, light, is a moonstone. Hook Shim, darkness is an onyx stone."
"Wait." Kuwabara interrupted. "That's only six keys. I thought you said there were seven of them?"
"Yes, they are seven. Unfortunately, the Spirit World researchers have been unable to decipher the ancient scrolls that tell the story of the keys and thus haven't learned what the seventh element is. Anyways, that's why it was so important for them to protect the six known keys."
Yusuke cocked an eyebrow and this and retorted, "If it's so valuable and dangerous, then why guard it here in the human world. Isn't it smarter to keep it in the Spirit World, where they could keep an eye on them?"
Kurama laughed and replied, "True, it was safer to keep them in the Spirit World, but then, the Enma decided to hide it in the Human World where it would be harder for some demons to steal it. Isn't that right, Hiei?"
Hiei punched Kurama's arm, though not hard enough to break it, and growled, "It was a long time ago, Kurama, when I was a foolish young demon. You really didn't need to bring..."
His fierce gaze flickered from Kurama to Yusuke and said, "That's why we're here. Koenma asked us to help you protect the keys and hunt down the thief. Tonight, we'll be breaking into the Dijkstra Mansion, where the Mi key is. Be there by midnight. Hopefully, this could end my stupid community service and we'll never have to meet again."
Kuwabara ruffled Hiei's hair and said, "Come on now, shorty. Don't you like hanging out with us? After all, you're hanging out with the coolest person there is-me."
Hiei simply slipped his hands into his deep pockets and withdrew a menacing dagger. With the blade glistening in the sun, Hiei snarled, "Touch me again, and I swear, you'll never see the next day."
With that threat hanging over their heads, Hiei walked away, his angry aura lashing out around him. As soon as he was out of sight, Yusuke asked, "Wait, what does he mean by 'breaking in'?."
Keiko murmured, "I'm more curious why he seems to angry about the subject."
Kurama, once again, supplied the answer. " Koenma decided that with the new robbery, it might be safer to bring the stones under the Spirit World's protection again." Turning to Keiko, he answered, "The Shinsongyui Yulshi is a touchy subject for him. Like I said, he tried to steal the keys before, but he failed miserably."
Kuwabara snorted obnoxiously, "What a proud guy, getting all bratty because he screwed up once."
Kurama gave a small, sad smile. "It wasn't because he got caught stealing it. He went to steal it with a partner. While they were running away from the guards, she fell behind and he had to watch her die while he hid in the shadows. He won't tell me anything more than that, but I think he really loved her. Like a sister, you know?"
At the last phrase, a sad air fell upon the group. Like a sister; everyone (except the clueless Kuwabara) knew how much it had hurt Hiei to be separated from his sister, being able to only watch over her from the dark shadows. Rarely letting anyone close to him, how painful was it to watch her die? How much pain has he carried since then?

The bitter winter wind seemed to slice through Yusuke's many layers of clothes right to the bone. Dressed darkly in black, Yusuke gasped at the view of the city from the rooftop; thousands of tiny lights glowed against the dark sky. The yellowish orange glow dominated the ground, but it couldn't compare with the clear bright lights of the stars above. The stars shone brilliantly, dimming the beauty of the city below. How odd that the stars should shine superior to the streetlights below.
Tearing his eyes away from the beautiful scene, Yusuke stared down through the glass ceiling and watched the guards down below, attending to their shifts. Only eleven thirty, the others had not yet arrived.
Yusuke sighed, since when did my life get so complicated? So twisted to the point where I have to steal five precious stones to keep others from stealing them?
Bored, he sat down on the roof and took out a cigarette. By the time his cigarette burned halfway through, the other three joined him on the roof. Kurama and Hiei gracefully leapt onto the roof and the three watched Kuwabara struggle to make it to the top. While Kuwabara tried to catch his breath, Kurama, in a tight black shirt and sleek pants began to grow a vine for a rope. Hiei, changed back into his usual wardrobe, simply watched the night sky deep in thought and Yusuke watched the guards below apprehensively. Nervous, he asked,
"Kurama, did you get any information about the mansion?"
With a smile, Kurama replied, "The emerald is located on the fourth floor, east wing, in a nine-inch vault and surrounded by tons of security."
Yusuke sighed, "Exactly what am I getting into?"
"Don't worry too much about the guards. The Dijkstra family doesn't trust their help enough to let them guard the emerald. It's basically invisible trigger lines, heat sensitive floors, and weight sensitive vault. Kuwabara will stay here on the roof to secure our escape route; I'll go down as far as the floors, but you and Hiei are by your selves at the vault. Can you handle that?"
"No beating up people? Aish, how boring."
Hiei joined them by the glass entrance, "If you guys were paying any attention, then you'd see that the guards' shifts are over. Let's just finish this and go." Silently, Hiei cut open a large hole in the glass with his sharp blade and tossed the glass circle behind him where it shattered with a tiny twinkle. Leaving Kuwabara to his own means, the three slid down the vine and rushed down to the third floor. When they arrived, Kurama lifted his arm to stop the other two from entering the east wing. From his pocket, Kurama pulled out a heavy, fluffy flower and gently blew it. A thick cloud of pollen floated down the long, dark hallway and settle to reveal a complicated web of lasers. As Yusuke simply gaped at the difficulty of the problem at hand, Hiei simply dashed across hall, too fast for the normal eye to see. Kurama, on the other hand, knelt by the corner and began to grow thick vines, covering the wall. Went it finished, Kurama motioned to Yusuke urgently.
"Hayaku, Yusuke! Climb across the vines."
Carefully, the two made their way down the hall. When they finally made it through, they began to dash down towards a vault when Hiei stopped them. Yusuke asked, "What is it this time? Is it the heat sensitive floors already?"
Kurama tensed and squinted his eyes towards the darkness. Hiei noticed the redhead's movements and said, "So, you finally noticed it?" Kurama nodded his head slightly and narrowed his eyes suspiciously. Confused, Yusuke tried to look into the darkness for whatever was disturbing the two demons. Just when he was about give up, a soft noise caught his ears. Soft pattering sounds, in a tight pattern, growing louder.
"What the hell? I though you said that there weren't anyone down here at this time, Kurama."
"I said none of Dijkstra's workers were down here at this time…"
Quickly, each hid himself into the dark corners and silently awaited for whoever was coming there way. The footsteps grew louder and louder, but also slower. Eventually, when it was just a few feet away from them, it slowed down to a walking pace. Soon, it halted. Yusuke heard a soft rustle of cloth, followed by a soft laugh.
"I know you're there. You might as well come out now."
A silvery voice floated out to them, smooth and confident laced with a tint of arrogance Yusuke recognized from his own voice. Curious, Yusuke revealed himself from his hiding spot and faced his challenger. A hooded figure stood before him, holding a soft, velvet bag that bulged with something. The shadows dominated the face, revealing nothing, but from his height, Yusuke guess the mysterious stranger's age not too far from his own. Yusuke smiled,
"Watcha doing so late, junior? Shouldn't you be in bed by now?"
"Heh, I could ask you the same thing, old man. So if you got no other weak jokes, I'll be going now." He tried to walk past Yusuke, but Yusuke caught his arm and held him back in place. "It looks like you have something of mine."
"Funny, I didn't see you jump through the hoops like I did." He jerked his arm away from Yusuke's grip and started to back away when he stopped suddenly. Kurama's voice echoed through the darkness, "If you don't mind, I'd appreciate it if you give up the stone right about now."
The cloaked figure jumped away, startled and began to run down the hall towards the main building. When he got to the lasers, he hesitated a few moments before executing a series of flips between each line, passing through with careful precision. Hurried, Kurama made the vine grow onto the ceiling, providing vines to swing across with.
And the chase was on, the stranger running with Yusuke and Kurama hot in pursuit. Soon, he made it to the scene of Yusuke's entrance and stared hopelessly at the ceiling, the moonlight revealing some of his face. Now that Yusuke had the time to look around himself, he noticed that the spacious room was large enough to fight without causing too much of a ruckus. The black and white marble floor shined with the moonlight as the delicate glass walls allowed the light to light up the room. Along the walls, stood tall shelves, a few feet shy of the ceiling, holding various works of art. Yusuke's sneakers screeched upon the floor as he tried to stop himself, drawing the mysterious thief's attention to him.
Obviously panicking, he barely noticed Hiei, sneaking in behind him. In a quick blur, Hiei drew his sword and held it at his prisoner's neck, threatening, "Move and the floor will be painted in your blood." In the dead silence, only the frightened panting of the thief made any noise, echoing through the enormous mansion. Puzzled, confused look passed through Hiei's face, and within a split second, the cloak fell limp in Hiei's hand, the thief slipped away. Angrily, Hiei threw the cloak away and stood, poised ready for any attack.
"You're fast, but I'm faster."
The light voice echoed tauntingly from above and up on one of the shelves on the wall sat a young girl, her face bright with mischief. As she stood up, she revealed her whole self. A slim body, though shorter than Hiei, stood decked in a tight black, sleeveless body suit. She wore a short, white skirt with length of netting wrapped loosely around it. Her pale face shone white under the moonlight; two long bangs shading her sapphire blue eyes. A tight, cloth mask hide the bottom half of her face and her long hair was tied in a braid, coiling a little on the floor. She smiled under the mask and lifted her velvet bag. "Like you said, Yusuke. I should really be in bed, so I'll be going now!"
With that said, she flipped off the shelf and grabbed onto the vine Kurama had grown, and shimmied out of sight. Hiei was the first to recover and climbed up the vine as quickly as possible. Kurama and Yusuke followed him up to the roof where they found Kuwabara staring out beyond out over the surrounding buildings, stunned.
Hiei grabbed the teenager's shirt and demanded, "Where did the girl go!?!" Kuwabara managed to stutter out, "I-I-I s-sa-saw the girl run away past me in that direction." He pointed to the south, "I would have stopped her, but she surprised me so quickly…"
Hiei wasn't even listening anymore. He walked over to the direction where she had fled and scanned the view to see if he could still catch her. The wind picked up again, whipping his black cloak around him. The dark clouds began to drift across the night sky, hiding whatever light stood in their way. As the clouds began to skim over the moon, the group watched Hiei, punch the brick wall in anger, frustration, confusion. When his blood began to bleed over his hands, dripping down onto the floor, he stopped and yelled. The whole city seemed to echo "Mizuko, Mizuko, Mizuko."
I was running through the night. I felt the shadows' cold touch try to pull me into their own dark world. I wanted to give into them, but something was holding me back. Though I cursed my pathetic existence, though I cursed the path I was forced to walk down, knowing it will inevitably lead to death, though I had lost all hope, something was anchoring me to life, the life I was so willing to discard. It felt like someone was calling after me, asking to stay, just for him. I don't know who it is, so why should I care? So why do I find myself reaching out for that person? Does he know who I am? Does he care about me? Can he save me?
