Chapter Three:
"But Urameshi! We don't even know where to start looking really!" Kuwabara ranted at Yuusuke as they walked down the street.
"Can it Kuwabara! We have to find something! We can't just go back to Kurama's house and tell him that we didn't find anything and that he has to stay like that forever!" Yuusuke looked a little more than peeved. 'We just HAVE to find that woman.....Kurama.....'
"You're right Urameshi! I, the great Kuwabara, will find this hag and torture her til' she gives us the cure!" With that, Kuwabara started laughing insanely. Yuusuke just siged.
They trudged along, occasionally having to dodge people running past them in a hurry. By the time they got to the mall, they were worn out and hot on account of the brightass sun. They both sighed contently when they walked into the airconditioned shopping market.
"Hmm, Kurama said something about the old woman being in the cosmetics aisle." The darkheaded spirit detective stated.
"Let's just hope she's still there." For once, Kuwabara didn't sound like his confident self. He started toward the left side of the store.
"Yo Kuwabara! The cosmetics are THIS way!" Yuusuke said, amused at the peeved look Kuwabara sent his way.
"I knew that! I was just checking the surrounding territory for enemies!" Although his face was straight, his eyes and excuse were typical giveaways.
Yuusuke rolled his eyes. "Riiiight Kuwabara......dumbass.." Yuusuke stifled a snicker as Kuwabara looked ready to take his head off his shoulders. Kuwabara's face took on a crimson blaze, and he charged at the not-surprised spirt dectective. Yuusuke just took off toward the area under the sign that read, "Cosmetics" with Kuwabara chasing him like a raving bull who just spotted Inuyasha. (Hee hee, couldn't think of a better way to describe something big and red.)
The two spirit detectives scanned the area, calmed after a threat of being kicked out of the building. Kuwabara decided that finding that hag for his redheaded friend was more important than settling his ageold score with Yuusuke. After not much luck, they spotted an employee, who might have seen her yesterday. Yuusuke approached the woman who looked about 30. She had shoulder length light brown hair, and enough makeup that would probably crack if she dared to smile.
She brought her gaze up from the book she was reading and smiled at the darkheaded young man and his orange haired companion.
"Can I help you?" She grinned at the two boys. Yuusuke was relieved to see her face was still intact after that smile. He was sure that her face would crack.
"Yes, I was wondering, were you working yesterday? Around noon?" He asked as politely as he could muster. Before the lady had a chance to answer, Kuwabara decided to intervine.
"Oi, did you see a strange old hag selling lotion around here?" He practically yelled at the startled worker. Her face seemed to burrow in concentration, then she frowned.
"I'm terribly sorry, but I was working here in cosmetics yesterday and I didn't see any old woman. Now please excuse me." With that, she turned away and buried her nose back in her book. Kuwabara was NOT going to take this lightly. It seemed Yuusuke wasn't either.
"Hey! Did you at least see a redheaded boy come through here yesterday? He was shopping for some things in THIS department. I'm sure you couldn't have missed him." Yuusuke was losing his patientce with this woman. The woman jerked her head up at the mention of the redhead's description.
"Why yes, I seen him, he was picking up some perfume and lipstick, I thought it was a woman, but apparently not, he had bright green eyes, correct?" Yuusuke and Kuwabara both smiled at that. They were finally getting somewhere.
"Yes, and he seemed to buy a bottle of lotion from an old woman about 70 or so, he said she was sitting at a table over around in there." Yuusuke said quickly, hope raising in his chest.
"Yeah, and we really need to find this woman, it's very important." Kuwabara stated, wanting to find out about this strange woman as soon as possible.
"Hmmm..." The employee seemed to think very deeply. She seemed to recall the redhead carrying a strange purple bottle with him when he came to the checkout.
"I seen the bottle that you must be talking about, but I'm sorry, I didn't see where he got it or anything. I'm terribly sorry to not be of anymore help." The woman looked genuinely upset.
"It's ok, thanks for your help." Yuusuke said through clenched teeth. He was so pissed off at the moment. He turned to leave but Kuwabara slammed his fist on the counter, causing both Yuusuke and the salesclerk to jump.
"That's it!!? That's all the information we get?!" Kuwabara was fuming, glaring at the frightened woman.
"Kuwabara! Leave her alone! She told us all she could!" Yuusuke was pretty pissed too, but taking it out on the saleswoman wasn't going to get them anywhere. He wrapped his arms around the still flailing Kuwabara and tried to drag him away from the palefaced worker. She looked like she was going to faint at any given moment.
*************************************************************** ********
"Urameshi! Why did you just let her go?!" Kuwabara screamed at the angry looking Yuusuke.
"Shut up! It wouldn't do us any good if we were to threaten the poor woman! She told us what she knew!" Yuusuke was really losing his patientce on the whole situation. They were walking back to Kurama's house, preparing to give the fox the dissapointing news of their failure.
"We looked everywhere, and talked to all the people, but nobody seemed to even recall the old woman." Yuusuke looked like he was deep in thought. 'This had to be some kind of conspiracy. I mean, why Kurama? Is there someone behind this? Or does the woman have some unknown grudge against Kurama? I can't think of anyone in the human world who would be pissed at Kurama, or Shuuichi, everybody loved Shuuichi Minaminno, no one would dare such a thing. But that lotion couldn't have been from the human world.......hmmmmm.....unless it was from the demon world....'
"That's it!" Yuusuke exclaimed. Kuwabara just gaped at the excited teen.
"What is Urameshi?" Kuwabara's curiousity was killing him.
"That concoction HAD to have come from the Makai! Millions of demons and such have a grudge against Youko Kurama, so they could have been the ones to try this stunt as a form of revenge. We all know how vain Youko was, so it seems practicle." Yuusuke's mood brightened. At least they wouldn't return to the devastated kitsune without some hope. Kuwabara picked up on Yuusuke's revelation and grinned. But his sunny dispositon was cut short as a thought occured to him.
"Of course, but how will we know where to start looking in the Makai? I mean, there's literally millions of demons who hate Kurama." As usual, Kuwabara always had to be stupid to be smart. Yuusuke visibly deflated.
"Ummm....well.......I KNOW! We could talk to Koenma about it. That little pacifier sucking runt has to know something! Ain't I a genious?!" With that, it was Yuusuke's turn for the insane laughter. Kuwabara looked like he had just missed out on some great joke.......and still didn't get it.
******************************************************************* ****
"Yessss....my plan has started out beautifully...but Hiei has stayed with his kitsune...regardless of his looks. Hmm, I had not anticipated this. But of course! He's only with him still because he has hope that there's a cure! How thoughtless of me! I'll take care of that soon enough......" Rats in the corridors scurried to their respective holes when creepy laughter filled the castle.
"It won't be long now....Hiei will be mine. He should've been mine from the start. He is MY heir is he not?" She dared anyone to disagree with her. Not that there were anybody in the room with her.
"That sex-crazed fox will get what's coming to him." She grinned with glee, mixed with an insane ambition.
************************************************************* **********
"I still can't find anything!" Kurama looked like he was ready to explode. He'd been burying his nose in every book he could find since Yuusuke and Kuwabara left, looking for some kind of answer to his predicament. But to no avail.
"Greeneyes, you've been searching for an hour and a half now, we should wait til' the two clowns get back from that market place." Hiei said calmly from his perch on the windowsill.
"But Hiei! I have to find out something! I'm going to go crazy if I don't!" He exclaimed to his calm lover with desperation in his eyes. When he recieved nothing but a 'hn, he tore his gaze from his lover and went back to reading frantically. As he was about to toss the book as far away from him as he could, the front door burst open, revealing two excited looking teens. Kurama jerked his head up at the intrusion. Hiei got up from his place at the window and sat beside Kurama on the couch.
"Did....did you find anything?" Yuusuke couldn't fail to notice the desperate hope in those pleading greeneyes.
"Well, we didn't find the old woman....nobody seemed to have recalled even seeing her!" Yuusuke stated. Kurama's shoulders drooped, his whole posture seemed slouched and defeated.
"But, we have some news on to where the lotion might have come from." Yuusuke said, hoping to make his friend feel better.
Kurama's head jerked up and Yuusuke noted a gleam in the kitsune's eye.
With that, Kuwabara and himself seated themselves in the closest chairs. They proceded to tell the two lovers all about their trip to the mall, of course leaving out the part with Kuwabara chasing Yuusuke around.....
"Hmm, you're right Yuusuke, lots of demons probably have a grudge, and Youko Kurama was as vain as they come, so of course they'd attack my looks." Kurama looked a little bright than when they found him this morning.
"Hn, and Koenma better know something." Hiei looked at Kurama with an intense gaze. Kurama met his eyes. He noted something in those ruby depths. He couldn't put his finger on it, but it seemed.....possesive and determined. He still couldn't believe Hiei actually stuck around with him. He thought Hiei would have snorted in disgust and left back the way he came. But no, he seemed determined to help Kurama get his legs back.
"Oi, then why the hell are we still hanging around here for? Let's head to Koenma's!" Kuwabara said, pumping his fist into the air. Yuusuke and Kurama cheered. Hiei just barely smirked. With a new found hope and destination, they prepared to head toward the Makai.
Author's Notes: I had a burst of writer's energy. I had to get it out. Hope you liked. I'm not to happy with the LACK of reviews. Come on people, I want to know what you think of it! I looked it up, out of all the people who read the story, only a few people reviewed. All I'm asking is for you to atleast say that you either loved it, or hated it. That's all. Peace out.
