Chapter 8 : A Double Surprise

Hiei flitted into the warehouse, reaching there just in time to see Kurama tumble to the floor. A strange, misty warrior that was raising its katana, floated in front of him. Hiei watched as Kurama's eyes widened with fear.

“KURAMA!!!”

From the information that he received from Botan and Kurama, he knew that his powers were of no use against Shiryou's ghosts. He looked around frantically, searching for one of those mechanic guns that he had seen the Ghostbusters use on occasions. Finally, his eyes came to rest on Kurama's fallen proton pack. Snatching it up, he struggled to put it on.

“Come on. Come on. Work, you blasted Ningen contraption,” he yelled, shaking it and flipping the switches at random. Finally, there was a buzz as the gun shivered. Hiei pointed it at the ghost and BLAMM!!!

Flying backwards, he landed in a pile of crates while the uncontrolled ray swung across the warehouse. Sticks of dynamites tumbled out from the crates, covering him from head to toe. Kuwabara yelped as the ray swung above his head, singeing his hair. Everybody scattered away, dodging the ray.

The ghost, who held Kurama captive, turned its head at the commotion just as the ray swung towards it. The Bourei screamed as it was blasted, slowly fading away until nothing remained but a puff of smoke.

Hiei, still holding the gun, scrambled from the pile and rushed towards his lover. Kurama had fainted from power exhaustion and was sprawled on the floor. Hiei was relieved that there was no serious damage. Taking off his headband, he wrapped it cautiously around Kurama's injured palm. He took off his cloak and covered him with it. Then he proceeded to deal with the rest of the Bourei.

Meanwhile….

The Ghostbusters squirmed in the M.M.B's ( short for Marshmallow Boy ) grip, trying their best to wiggle out. Or should I say that only Peter, Ray and Winston were squirming around. Egon was busy staring at the M.M.B's face.

“Hey, Egon,” Ray grunted. “How about a little help, huh?”

“Yeah,” Peter agreed. “You can't depend on me only, you know.”

“For your information, I'm thinking of a way for us to get out of this predicament,” he replied, still staring at the ghost. “And I think I may have found the solution. Winston,” he called out.

“Yeah?”

“Do you still have your proton gun?”

“Yeah, it's here in my hands.”

“Good, good. Now see if you can get your hands free.”

It took a while but after a few shoves and some wriggling, Winston finally freed his hands. “Ok,” Egon took charge. “Since you're the closest to him, you have a better view of his face. I want you to shoot at his eye.”

“What?! You're crazy, man?”

“Trust me.”

“Sure hope this works,” he mumbled, firing his gun.

The shot was true and howling with pain, the M.M.B released the Ghostbusters. Landing uninjured, they quickly scrambled to their feet. At Egon's order, they simultaneously shot towards the other eye. The pain was excruciating and the M.M.B soon vanished in agony. The Ghostbusters have defeated the M.M.B again; this time without exploding marshmallow throughout New York City.

“Egon, how did you figure that out?” Winston asked as they caught their breaths.

“Elementary. Each ghost has its own weakness and since the Marshmallow Boy's body is impervious to our proton blasts, it is only logical that his weakness lies elsewhere.”

“In other words, you were only guessing,” Winston remarked, raising his eyebrow.

Egon cleared his throat self-consciously. “I would prefer to call it a deduction.”

Koenma was badly injured. He had scars on his face and arms, and his clothes were slashed almost to pieces. It was clear that he wasn't a fighter, which made him very vulnerable against the warrior ghost.

Yusuke was luckier with fewer scars but both were quickly tiring out as they fought back to back.

Unfortunately, the ghosts had guessed Koenma's weakness and had decided to get rid of him first. Again, they charged towards them, attacking from both sides. The detectives tensed, ready for anything. Yusuke waited till the last second to fire his gun but he was fooled. The Bourei disappeared and reappeared at Koenma's side, swinging its katana with a war cry.

PUFF!!

A proton ray had suddenly struck the charging ghost, disintegrating it. The other ghost froze in mid-air at the sight of its comrade's fate, enabling Hiei to blast it as well. Smirking triumphantly at the two, he left to take care of the last Bourei. With the speed of lightning, he soon achieved victory, much to Kuwabara's annoyance.

The enemies defeated, the Ghostbusters and Reikai-tantei grouped together to confront Shiryou. He calmly clapped his hands, mocking them.

“Impressive,” he complimented. “I've never thought you could get this far. It's a pity to see all that effort go to waste.”

“What do you mean?” Yuusuke asked. “Face it, Shiryou. Your ghosts have been defeated. You're going down.”

“Do you really think you have defeated me? I've waited too long for my revenge and I'll destroy anything and anyone that gets in my way. In five minutes time, it will be exactly midnight. Try and stop me if you can but Koenma will DIE!!”

“Ah, shut your crap,” a voice said from behind him. “And eat dirt.”

During the `small talk', Shiryou failed to notice that Hiei had flitted behind him. He turned around just as Hiei's finger pressed the trigger button.

“HIEI!!! NOOO!!!” Koenma screamed, running forward.

But it was too late. The beam shot out from the gun, heading straight towards the stunned ghost-master. The ray found its target and a burst of bright light blasted out, sending everyone flying backwards and blinding them at the same time. Sprawled on the ground, Koenma screamed out again, his hand shielding his face from the flying debris.

“SHIRYOU!!!”

A few seconds later, the bright light faded away and the dust settled. Everyone was too stunned to move except Koenma. He cracked his eyes opened slowly and gasped, diverting everyone's attention to the shocking sight that greeted them.

There, standing well and alive, were two Shiryous.
