Chapter 1: Escape
A thunderstorm sounding only a few miles away, the streets bare of people with the exception of one. The steady sound of boots hitting cement could be heard to those within earshot. A darkening street shadowed her figure as she walked alone, the evening growing into night. She was late home as always, but she didn't care. Her father was always drunk and if she got home before he passed out, she knew she'd acquire another beating. So she waited and killed time, knowing if she miscalculated she'd be home too early. It was important that that didn't happen, more so now then ever. Tonight was different because she was planning on leaving the house permanently. During the past week she had moved her stuff little by little to a spot she had found in a wooded area a few miles away. She only had a couple more things to move. After this she'd be free. She had already graduated from high school a year ago and was now eighteen. Legally she could do what she wanted.
She was headed “home” now. If it could be called that. She hoped he was already unconscious. She unlocked the door. Taking off her shoes, she tiptoed down the hall and peered around the doorway into the living room. With one arm and a leg over the back of the sofa and a half-empty whiskey bottle in his hand was dear-old-daddy out like a light. She smirked at her luck and quietly climbed the stairs into her room. Sitting on her bed was a baby fox, which she collected into her arms and placed it into a small animal carrier. She took her final bag and stuffed it with feeding syringes and formula,-for the fox of course-batteries for any electric devices, and all the pictures she could find of her mother. With that done she grabbed some extra food from the kitchen. She peered around the corner into the living room one last time. “Right where I left ya” she whispered. Then she saw his wallet sitting on the table only a few feet away from her father's drunken body. ~Looks like my luck isn't so good after all.~ She opened the door and set the carrier and bag outside it. Then she went back inside and cautiously snuck over to the table and snatched up the wallet. ~easy enough.~ she smirked and turned to leave but she hit her leg on the coffee table, knocking over an already empty whiskey bottle which smashed on the floor. “shit!” she hissed to herself and snapped her head around in horror to find that she had jarred her old man from his peaceful slumber. He groaned lightly and she backed up to about three feet away from the doorway to the living room.
Unfortunately that was the moment he decided to sit up. His eyes were glossed over as he turned them to his daughter. “Where hav' ya been ya lil' tramp?” he slurred the words out. She turned to run but she felt something hit her in the head from behind and the impact knocked her to the floor. She gathered her thoughts quickly -having experience in situations such as these- and rolled onto her back to see her father struggling to stand up from the couch. “dammit!” he said before he finally stood on his feet. “Now wher'd di'ya think ya wer' goin' ya stupi' bitch.” He cursed at her. “Jus' like yur damn mother!”
This enraged her and despite her better judgment yelled, “Fuck you, ya worthless drunken bastard!” After this she felt an immense pain in her side, but she still laid there, waiting for him to swing his leg once more. When he finally did, she grabbed his leg and yanked it. He lost his balance and fell to the floor with a thud, cursing as she stood. “Rot in hell bastard!” with that she kicked him in the groin and without looking back she ran out the door, grabbed her stuff and hightailed it to the woods, hearing her fathers string of
curses as she ran.
