Halloween

By Beautiful Dreamer

*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*

It was autumn, and the leaves outside were turning the same rusty color as the brick wall around the school. The silent glances and the hard feelings were back in place for Kurama and Hiei. They sat in class, not paying much attention to the teacher talking in the front of the room. The bell rung overhead, signaling it was the end of the day. The teacher stopped the kids before they left the room and started to say, "I like to conclude for today, that it's Halloween. It's important that you stay out of trouble tonight. The police are picking up youngsters that are causing mischief. You may go now." Most of the students dashed out the classroom and into the hall, so they could find their friends to make plans for the evening.

"But I don't see the point in keeping Shuuichi away from Hiei." Maya spoke in a whisper. "You must have seen the way they treat each other or at the least heard the rumors, Miroshi."

"Rumors and the human eye, you can't really rely on either." Miroshi stated as he toyed with his hair.

"It does't seem like they get along. We have all seen it. Shuuichi isn't the type to be rude or cruel but he acts differently around her. And Hiei…" Unknown to Maya as she talked, other students were eavesdropping on the conversation and hushed voices spoke in the background.

"I can't believe someone could hate Shuuichi."

"Actually, Hiei doesn't like anyone."

"Yeah, but Shuuichi is every girls' dream man. He's smart, incredibly handsome, and a gentleman. He wouldn't harm a fly."

"Why couldn't Hiei fall for someone like him?"

"Oh, my gosh! Do you think Hiei is a lesbian!?"

"That or she's a real bitch."

Miroshi let out mellowed laugh at Maya's and the other's view on things. "Maya, Maya. It doesn't matter if you believe me or not. All you have to do is get Shuuichi's attention tonight and lead him to the park around nine."

"Alright."

"Hey, Hiei!" A familiar male voice yelled from behind Hiei. Hiei stopped in her tracks and waited for the young Shuichi to catch up. "I'm glad I found you. Do you want to come trick or treating?"

"Hn."

"Me and my friends are going tonight. And wanted you to come along. Halloween is the best holiday. We'll get free candy just by knocking on doors." Shuichi didn't give Hiei a chance to say a word as he pushed her towards the direction of his house.

It didn't take long for them to reach the house. "Hello, Hiei. I take it that Shuichi talked you into going with us. Do you have a costume?" Shiori greeted them at the door.

"Why?" Hiei sneered.

"If you don't have a costume, than they won't give you any candy." Shuichi explained.

"Shuichi, you finish your homework and then get ready to go. Come with me, Hiei. I'll find you something to wear." Shiori said as she led Hiei to her bedroom. "You may sit on the bed if you like Hiei." However, Hiei decided to remain standing as she arrived in the room.

Glancing around, she noticed the bedroom was decorated differently than the rest of the house. It was a darker shade of white and it had tranquil lighting. Shiori moved towards the closet and slid the door open.

"Here it is." Shiori emerged from the closet. "I've had this for a long time. I hoped one day that my eldest son, he's also named Shuuichi, would wear it. But he was never interested in such things. I think this should fit you." The older woman lowered the outfit into Hiei's hands.

A few minutes later, yelling could be heard. "I look ridiculous!" Hiei's temper started to spark up. Shiori was not seem fazed by the harsh tone, instead, she was feeling quite delighted. In front of her, Hiei stood with her arms crossed and pouting about the bright orange pumpkin shape outfit that covered her hips and tight black leggings that enclosed her legs.

"It only needs one more thing to make it perfect."

"Don't put that damn thing on my head!"

"Hold still." Shiori calmly requested, "You want to get a lot of candy, don't you?" Hiei ceased fidgeting. The woman alright had found out about Hiei's sweet tooth and used it to her advantage.

"This top will grantee to get you a whole bag full." Shiori brought an orange design of a pumpkin's top surface with a brown stem in the middle with black strings on the side, meant to be worn as a hat. After, tying strings around Hiei's chin, Shiori stepped back to take a good look.

"Aww, Hiei, you are so adorable." Shiori just had to wrap her arms around the little demon.

"Let's hurry up and get this over with." Hiei said as she stormed out of the room. Before leaving the room, Shiori grabbed a camera that sat on her dresser and followed after the little house guest.

"Come on, Shuichi. Time to go, we have to pick up your other friends." Shiori called out as she also listened to Hiei grumble about foolish human holiday at the front door. Meanwhile, Shuichi came running out of his room dressed in all black cloak with a hood in the back, in his hand was a plastic scythe and white power on his face to make him look pale.

"What are you suppose to be, Shuichi?" Shiori said, smiling down on him. Shuichi delayed in replying to his stepmother as he was entranced by Hiei but he quickly recovered.

"I'm supposed to be the Grim Reaper."

"If you were the Grim Reaper, you would be a perky girl, flying around on an oar, saying Bingo." Hiei commented, which made the other two, laugh.

"You have a unique imagination, Hiei." Shiori stuttered as she tried to control her laughter.

"Hn."
*~*

The car ride was a little bit irritating for Hiei as she had to listen to the mindless chatter of three other children. Two girls and one boy, ceaselessly asking questions about her. They kept trying to involve Hiei in their conversations. Finally, the car pulled up to the corner. Hiei felt she would have some space from these human until she saw the group waving at them as they pulled up. When Shuichi said he was going with some other friends, what he should have said was that his entire class and swarm of parents would be traveling in a pack through each neighborhood. The three kids they picked up were the ones whose parents couldn't take them. Hiei inwardly groaned as they got out of the car.

"Shiori, who's that pretty little girl you brought with you?" One of the mothers asked.

"Yeah, I think we would have remembered her being in the class with the other children." Another parent said.

"Hiei isn't in the sixth grade class. She's in high school and is a very good friend of the family."

"Wow, she looks so young to be in high school." A man broke into the conversation. Shiori listened while watching Hiei yell at a bunch of the kids for some unknown reason, and the kids began to laugh rather than get upset that someone was yelling at them.

They had begun at seven and now, it was eight o'clock . Hiei and Shuichi had five grocery bags each, not counting the six other bags Shiori was carrying filled with a large variety of candy. Throughout the night, people cooed as they saw Hiei and Shuichi, they looked so cute together as they went house to house. Their looks weren't the only weapon which they perused to get people to load them up with candy. It began when Hiei mistakenly said, "tricky feet." Which an elderly couple thought was extremely cute, and doubled the amount of candy they normally would have handed out. Who would have thought, messing up the words "trick or treat" would increase the amount candy handed out.

So messed up phrases like: Tricky feet, Eat some meat, toot or fruiters were said deliberately. After a while, the entire group decided to rest near a public square. The grown ups all grouped together to figure out the next location; leaving the kids unwatched.

"So Hiei, what house are we going to go to next." A girl in a cat costume questioned. Hiei surveyed the area, and pointed to a house, about five feet in the distance. It looked like one of those abandoned haunted houses in the movies.

"We can't go there. That house is haunted!" A boy exclaimed. The students started to form a tight circle. Stories were tossed around the circle telling about the old house. Hiei broke away from the kids and walked ahead in the direction of the house.

"Hiei, you can't go there alone." Shuichi called out.

"Don't follow me. I'll check things out by myself." Hiei replied as she walked into the darkness. If the rumors were right, a spirit must reside in the house and it would be better to check it out now rather than have Koenma order the team to deal with it later.

As Hiei approached the old house, with a huge broken wooden fence around it, he saw a group of teenagers running away snickering. A bunch of toilet paper was thrown across the grounds and egg yoke splattered on the windows. A clicking sound echoed through the air and a rifle barrel was pointed at the back of Hiei's neck.

"What are you doing on my property?" A ragged woman's voice spoke.

"So, you're just a mere human after all." Hiei muttered.

"And you must be one of the hooligans that ruined my home. Turn around, slowly, I don't like to shoot someone in the back." As Hiei turned, she came face to face with the person. It was a fifty year old woman wearing overalls and a checkered blue shirt. Her greenish gray hair was in a bun and a fierce look on her face. Suddenly, her face expressed shock and she lowered the gun.

"Is that you, Kasumi?" She whispered.

"I think you better get your eyes checked."

"Of course. My mistake..."

"Aren't you going to use that contraption on me?" The woman squeezed the trigger once the words left Hiei's mouth. Behind the fence, Shuichi and his friends were terrified when they heard the gun go off. They had followed Hiei to make sure she was alright. Now, they wished they had stopped her. All of them fled to go get an adult to help.

In the yard, Hiei stood there unharmed and didn't even flinch at the sound of the gun. The lady had intentionally fired the gun at the tree, believing she would get scared and run. However, the lady was wrong. "Go! Get off my property!" The old woman shouted as she retreated into the house.

Hiei stood in the yard a little longer, to clean up the mess the teens had made.

"Why am I cleaning this person's yard? I didn't do this." Hiei thought. As she was going to leave she heard a loud cry coming from inside the house. "Damn!" Hiei exclaimed as she ran into the house, following the screeching sound. When she opened the door, the smell of mildew became robust. There were five doors in the hallway and to the right were stairs leading up. The hallway had a spacious quality, compared to normal narrow halls. Flowers, plants, and pictures decorated the space beautifully. The floors cracked as Hiei ran to the cry.

She found the old woman clutching her index finger, which was dripping thick rivulets of blood. On the floor, there was a picture frame and glass scattered across the floor.

"Where are your bandages?" Hiei demanded.

"Behind the mirror, in the hallway bathroom." The woman told him willingly . Hiei returned shortly with the medical supplies and found the old woman sitting in a rocking chair.

"Give me your finger." Hiei told her as she dug in the medical beg for some tweezers. Hiei remember Kurama talking about what each item was used for one night, after patching up a wound. The woman reluctantly showed Hiei the cut; skillfully, Hiei removed the piece of glass without any complications. A waste paper basket was near the chair, and the fire demon threw the piece of glass away and continued to wrap up the woman's finger. After finishing with the woman's hand, Hiei cleaned up the broken glass.

"Kasumi."

"My name is Hiei." She said bitterly.

"I'm sorry. My name is Madoka." Hiei nodded her head in acknowledgement and turned to leave.

"Wait. Can you stay a little longer?" Modoka called out. Hiei only moved to the window sill bench and stared at the woman. "You remind me of my daughter." Modoka began her story and Hiei silently listened.

About thirty minutes later, the door bell ranged.

"'m sorry to bother you ma'am but has a girl dressed in a pumpkin outfit...." Shiori was quickly cut off by Modoka.

"Of course, Hiei is here. Come right, in you must be Shiori." Modoka invited her in cheerfully. In a few minutes, Shiori explained the situation about the mini cover up of Hiei's disappearance and how it took the scared kids a long time to explain the situation about Modoka. Modoka was quite amused to hear the rumors said about her and the woman gabbed on.

"Well, thank you for visiting me. I hope you, two come again."

"It was nice meeting you, Modoka." Shiori shook the woman's good hand and moved to the front door.

"Hiei." Modoka whispered as the pumpkin dressed girl went past her.

"Next Sunday." Hiei said and walked out the door.

"Good bye." The two women said again as they parted company.

At the public square, the class of kids came running up to Hiei, shouting, cheering, and asking a dozen questions when she arrived on the scene. Shiori interrupted the kids; saying it was getting late. There were moans of disappointment, and then a wave of ˜I want to ride home with Hiei." Hiei became infamous in the sixth grade class as the person who survived the haunted house and everyone wanted to know the details. The only way to settle the group of students down was to take a caravan to drop off Hiei.

It came as a surprise to Yukina and Genkai, to see the line up of cars come to the forest entrance of the temple. The major shock was when Hiei appeared still dressed in the pumpkin costume. With two dozen yelling kids screaming out the window of the cars and a huge temple; there was only one thing left to do, have a party; much to Hiei's annoyance.
