Yu Yu Hakusho Fan Fiction ❯ Hiei's Mirror ❯ Phone Call ( Chapter 3 )

Kurama watched Hiei silently, wondering vaguely how the volatile fire demon managed to look defenseless and innocent while sleeping.
Not much trouble with his conscience, hmm? He thought distantly. But how to handle this? It'd be a pity to let him die, but it'd be a relief to the poor souls he killed before he… sort of reformed, not to mention future victims and himself. He really doesn't think he has a good side, does he?
Hiei groaned softly as he rolled over, and Kurama smiled. I may as well contact the other member of Renkia Tentia, though. They have to know a member is injured, and he may have to stay at someone else's house. And who better to contact first than the `team leader'?
Kurama glanced around his room and sighed. He should have gotten a phone in his room years ago. Trotting down stairs, he wondered distantly if Hiei woke up and got hungry, and what did fire demons eat? How many times had he seem Hiei eat, anyway? Maybe he ate charcoal. Hmm.
He typed in Yuske's home phone number, startled to remember that Yuske lived with his mom when a young lady picked up the phone.
“H'llo?” mumbled a feminine voice into the receiver.
“Ah… this is…,” Kurama trailed off. Did he introduce himself to Ms. Urameshi with his human name or his demon one? It made more sense to have used his demon one, since talking to her son using one name and talking to her with a different one was confusing. He guessed, not really having hours before he had to continue. “This is Kurama. Is Yuske there?”
“You're that red haired girl? Yeah, Yuske's here, but not all the way here.” The woman giggled at her little joke as Kurama stiffened in rage at the `girl' comment.
Deciding not to correct the seemingly drunk woman, he asked cheerfully, “He's asleep? Could you wake him up? It's really important I talk to him now.”
“Really?” The woman replied suspiciously. “You know, he's already has Keiko, he doesn't need another skirt trying t-“
“Yes, I know, but this is really important. Please get him. Now.”
“ 'kay,” she mumbled sleepily. He heard several crashes that sounded a lot like valuable things falling. He sighed-he could see where Yuske got some of his less desirable qualities. Then a pause of silence, and a short noise (it sounded like someone was being roused by several crashes, and not being happy about it).
“Kurama?” It was Yuske's voice this time, and somehow it reassured him. “Do you have any idea what time it is?”
“Not really, no,” Kurama replied distantly. “Yuske, Hiei staggered into my house half-dead and still bleeding, practically dead. I'm surprised he didn't die as soon as he was hit by… whatever hit him. He seemed kind of… well, scared.”
“Hiei? Scared? Kurama, are you sure you're not still asleep? Because if you're not joking or asleep or hallucinating or high, I'm dreaming. That just doesn't happen.”
“Yuske that's not the point.” Kurama snapped.
“There are certain unchanging and dependable things in the world. That hunter guy does not outwit Bugs Bunny. The PowerPuff Girls do not try to take over the world. Kuwabara does not get the top score on a math exam. Most of all, Hiei does not get scared.”
“Yuske, that-“
“Excited at killing some guy that's seemingly ten times stronger, annoyed when something's annoying, maybe irritated if we have no “sweet snow”, but Hiei-“
“Yuske!” Kurama said, exasperated.
“-does not get-“
“Yuske!”
“-scared!”
“YUSKE!!!”
“Yeah?” Yuske replied, surprised at the vehemence in Kurama's voice. A short yelp was heard over the receiver, and Yuske repeated himself more urgently (not that he had been urgent the first time). Only Kurama was no longer listening.

“YUSKE!!!” Kurama howled agian into the phone. That idiot! For once he wished the stupid human would shut up and listen to him. Usually Yuske was level headed and easily convinced of urgency but now? Now that Hiei's life was on the line, he decided to be the easily amused joker. Now of all times! That-
Hiei groaned softly, bringing Kurama back from his thoughts. Not now, he scolded himself. I can't get distracted now. Not with it being Hiei. We need him. Yuske is the one who keeps us all together, I heal and think, Kuwabara… well, Kuwabara kept them reminded of reality. But we still need him, the stubborn, arrogant…
Hiei groaned again, and a grimance crossed his normally irritated expression. His eyes flicked open, and Kurama held the strangely hypnotic crimson orbs.
“The phone?” Hiei rasped, seeing the instrument hanging from Kurama's hand.
“Oh, I tried to call Yuske,” Kurama explained. Seeing his friend's puzzled expression, he explained, “He kind of was a little exasperating. I was thinking of hanging up and trying Kuwabara-“ Hiei shuddered at the thought-“but the power went out, as you can see.” Then he gestured vaguely around the room, wondering if the whole neighborhood was out, or if Hiei's attacker had found them (whoever it was).
Hiei's eye flickered closed, them opened again as he glanced over to the standing fox. “Kurama-“
Then the rattling windows cut him off, and both demons stiffened, a spike of fear stabbing their hearts. So soon!
