Ha ha, left a cliff hanger. I love those- they drive people crazy. Heh heh heh…
Kurama drew his rose whip, lashing out against the window, and sparkling shards rained down on the two demons. He lashed again- who knows, he might get lucky and hit this supposedly powerful demon.
Surprising, he felt the whip catch on something. By the feel of the whip, it was smaller and more humanoid then he thought it would have been. With a quick tug, he pulled the attacking demon to the floor-
-who promptly tugged back and caused Kurama to fall on him-
-who wrestled briefly with the quick demon-
-who was oddly familiar.
“What did I ever do to you?” Jin demanded from his back on the floor.
“Oh, sorry, Jin,” Kurama replied briskly, stiffly unentangling himself from the wind demon. “Thought you where someone else.”
“Yeah, well, Koenma wanted me to tell y…” He glanced at the once again unconscious Hiei, then did a double take. “What the heck happened to him?”
“He picked a fight with someone he shouldn't have. An old rival in the thief and criminal trade. At least that's what I gathered from his wounds.” Kurama replied distantly. “But never mind what Koenma said. I need you to take Hiei and I to the temple- no, Kuwabara's house will do better. The demon won't think of that.”
“Two things: one, since when is being a criminal a trade? And two-“ Jin gestured pointedly to the sleeping fire demon-“ Do you really think that little mister likes-to-blow-stuff-up is really going to take to us taking him to Kuwabara's house?”
“He won't- that's why we're going to drug him to make sure he won't wake up anytime soon,” Kurama explained.
A look of understanding found its way on to Jin's face. “Ah. So, are we going to call Yuske and get his help?” he asked, completely forgetting the extremely important message of Koenma's. Which was a huge mistake. It would later cost them quite a bit.
Kurama sighed at the memory of the recent phone call. “No, let's call him once we get to Kuwabara's. The phone can't work with the electricity out anyway.”
“Oh yeah. Sorry about that. I kind of crashed into the fuse box. It's really windy out there. It's weird how these ningen depend on this stuff anyway. Little itty bitty wires that they get all panicky about as soon as they need the missercave.” Jin announced.
“That's microwave.”
Jin ignored him and examined Hiei. “So, do we move him to Kuwabara's house before he gets X's for eyes or what?”
Hiei listened to their conversation silently, even managing to stifle a growl at the mention of moving him to Kuwabara's. But that soon past- and left in its place was a kind of empty resignation to his fate. An empty sadness- regret, maybe? For what? For the people he… They deserved, idiots that they where.
Then a soft noise. A child. At the door, listening to their every word. Didn't Kurama have step-siblings or something? Yeah, his mother was sick- that's why he betrayed me and that ogre and how I lost to Yuske- and she met that business guy and married, and that guy had kids. Right? So his step-sister or step-brother is listening to them blabbing on, and that kid is either going to tell his daddy or new mommy this whole conversation. Then they all either figure out about the Spirit World, or they think Kurama is getting mixed up with criminals and Kurama gets kicked out of his family.
Suddenly he realized something- if Kurama got kicked out of his human family, then he wouldn't have to keep pretending to be human. He'd be a full time demon. He'd be able to help full-time. No complications. Just like him… No family. Not except Yukina, who didn't even know he was her brother.
But Kurama'd have no one.
Hiei shuddered. He felt something uncoil inside of him- something strange and alien. What had that dumb woman that always clung to Yuske called it? Compassion. Like it or not, he couldn't resign his best friend, who was much less strong emotionally, to the same fate to the same fate he himself suffered. A fate worse than his.
Hiei opened his eyes. Kurama yelped, then jumped back. He'd been holding a spoonful of something that doubtlessly would have kept Hiei sleeping for a long time to his mouth, ready to plunge it in. “H-Hiei! You're awake! I, uh, was…”
“I know. Trying to drug me.” Hiei threw the covers off himself, while Kurama stared dumfounded at his unusually forgiving friend. “A kid is listening to us at your door. What do you think will happen if they tell your mom or step-dad about this? An injured criminal lying on your bed, a possible criminal talking to you, and discussing murder. Not only that, but someone, by the looks of things, broke into your room.”
Kurama's face paled. He yanked the door open, and in tumbled a tiny girl. “Sunia, what have I told you about eavesdropping?” he demanded shakily.
